The article discusses the progress and issues related to transparent oxide semiconductor (TOS) TFTs for advanced display and imaging applications. Amorphous oxide semiconductors continue to spark new technological developments in transparent electronics on a multitude of non-conventional substrates. Applications range from high-frame-rate interactive displays with embedded imaging to flexible electronics, where speed and transparency are essential requirements. TOS TFTs exhibit high transparency as well as high electron mobility even when fabricated at room temperature. Compared to conventional a-Si TFT technology, TOS TFTs have higher mobility and sufficiently good uniformity over large areas, similar in many ways to LTPS TFTs. Moreover, because the amorphous oxide semiconductor has higher mobility compared to that of conventional a-Si TFT technology, this allows higher-frame-rate display operation. This would greatly benefit OLED displays in particular because of the need for lower-cost higher-mobility analog circuits at every subpixel.

Non-dispersive-infra-red (NDIR) sensors are believed to be one of the most selective and robust solutions for CO2 detection, though cost prohibits their broader integration. In this paper we propose a commercially viable silicon-on-insulator (SOI) complementary metal-oxide (CMOS) micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) technology for an IR thermal emitter. For the first time, vertically aligned multi walled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) are suggested as a possible coating for the enhancement of the emission intensity of the optical source of a NDIR system. VA-MWCNTs have been grown in situ by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) exclusively on the heater area. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy have been used to verify the quality of the VA-MWCNTs growth. The CNT-coated emitter demonstrated an increased response to CO2 of approx. 60%. Furthermore, we show that the VA-MWCNTs are stable up to temperatures of 500°C for up to 100 hours. © 2013 IEEE.

Triisopropylsilylethynyl-pentacene (TIPS-PEN) has proven to be one of the most promising small molecules in the field of molecular electronics, due to its unique features in terms of stability, performance and ease of processing. Among a wide variety of well-established techniques for the deposition of TIPS-PEN, blade-metered methods have recently gained great interest towards the formation of uniform crystalline films over a large area. Following this rationale, we herein designed a versatile approach based on blade-coating, which overcomes the problem of anisotropic crystal formation by manipulating the solvent evaporation behaviour, in a way that brings about a preferential degree of crystal orientation. The applicability of this method was evaluated by fabricating field-effect transistors on glass as well as on silicon dioxide/silicon (SiO2/Si) substrates. Interestingly, in an attempt to improve the rheological and wetting behaviour of the liquid films on the SiO2/Si substrates, we introduced a polymeric interlayer of polystyrene (PS) or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) which concurrently acts as passivation and crystallization assisting layer. In this case, the synergistic effects of the highly-ordered crystalline structure and the oxide surface modification were thoroughly investigated. The overall performance of the fabricated devices revealed excellent electrical characteristics, with high saturation mobilities up to 0.72 cm2 V-1 s-1 (on glass with polymeric dielectric), on/off current ratio >104 and low threshold voltage values (<-5 V). Doping difficulty in semiconductor nanocrystals has been observed and its origin is currently under debate. It is not clear whether this phenomenon is energetic or depends on the growth kinetics. Using first-principles method, we show that the transition energies and defect formation energies of the donor and acceptor defects always increase as the quantum dot sizes decrease. However, for isovalent impurities, the changes of the defect formation energies are rather small. The origin of the calculated trends is explained using simple band-energy-level models.

This paper compares the properties of silicon oxide and nitride as host matrices for Er ions. Erbium-doped silicon nitride films were deposited by a plasma-enhanced chemical-vapour deposition system. After deposition, the films were implanted with Er3+ at different doses. Er-doped thermal grown silicon oxide films were prepared at the same time as references. Photoluminescence features of Er3+ were inspected systematically. It is found that silicon nitride films are suitable for high concentration doping and the thermal quenching effect is not severe. However, a very high annealing temperature up to 1200 degrees C is needed to optically activate Er3+ which may be the main obstacle to impede the application of Er-doped silicon nitride.

Manganese-gallium oxide nanowires were synthesized via in situ Mn doping during nanowire growth using a vapor phase evaporation method. The microstructure and composition of the products were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The field and temperature dependence of the magnetization reveal the obvious hysteresis loop and large magnitude of Curie-Weiss temperature. The photoluminescence of the manganese-gallium oxide nanowires were studied in a temperature range between 10 and 300 K. A broad green emission band was observed which is attributed to the T-4(1)-(6)A(1) transition in Mn2+ (3d(5)) ions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thin films of TiO2 doped by Mn non-uniformly were prepared by sol-gel method under process control. In our preceding study, we investigated in detail, the effect of doping mode on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 films showing that Mn non-uniform doping can greatly enhance the activity. In this study we looked at the effect of doping concentration on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films. In this paper, the thin films were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer and electrochemical workstation. The activity of the photocatalyst was also evaluated by photocatalytic degradation rate of aqueous methyl orange under UV radiation. The results illustrate that the TiO2 thin film doped by Mn non-uniformly at the optimal dopant concentration (0.7 at %) is of the highest activity, and on the contrary, the activity of those doped uniformly is decreased. As a comparison, in 80 min, the degradation rate of methyl orange is 62 %, 12 % and 34 % for Mn non-uniform doping film (0.7 at %), the uniform doping film (0.7 at %) and pure titanium dioxide film, respectively. We have seen that, for the doping and the pure TiO2 films, the stronger signals of open circuit potential and transient photocurrent, the better photocatalytic activity. We also discusse the effect of dopant concentration on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films in terms of effective separation of the photon-generated carriers in the semiconductor. Semi-insulating (SI) InP materials have been prepared under different stoichiometric conditions, including Fe-doping in indium-rich melt and high temperature annealing undoped wafer in phosphorus and iron phosphide ambients. Deep level defects related with non-stoichiometry have been detected in the SI-InP samples. A close relationship between the material quality of electrical property and native deep defects has been revealed by a comprehensive study of defects in as-grown Fe-doped and annealed undoped SI-InP materials. Fe-doped SI-InP material with low carrier mobility and poor thermal stability contains a high concentration of deep defects with energy levels in the range of 0.1-0.4eV. The suppression of the defects by high temperature annealing undoped InP leads to the manufacture of high quality SI-InP with high mobility and good electrical uniformity. A technology for the growth of high quality SI-InP through stoichiometry control has been proposed based on the results.

Highly uniform and well-dispersed CeO2 and CeO2:Eu3+ (Sm3+, Tb3+) nanocrystals were prepared by a nonhydrolytic solution route and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV/vis absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, respectively. The result of XRD indicates that the CeO2 nanocrystals are well crystallized with a cubic structure. The TEM images illustrate that the average size of CeO2 nanocrystals is about 3.5 nm in diameter. The absorption spectrum of CeO2:Eu3+ nanocrystals exhibits red-shifting with respect to that of the undoped CeO2 nanocrystals. Under the excitation of 440 nm (or 426 nm) light, the colloidal solution of the undoped CeO2 nanocrystals shows a very weak emission band with a maximum at 501 nm, which is remarkably enhanced by doping additional lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+) in the CeO2 nanocrystals. The emission band is not due to the characteristic emission of the lanthanide ions but might arise from the oxygen vacancy which is introduced in the fluorite lattice of the CeO2 nanocrystals to compensate the effective negative charge associated with the trivalent ions.

Green-emitting iridium dendrimers with rigid hole-transporting carbazole dendrons are designed, synthesized, and investigated. With second-generation dendrons, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the dendrimers is up to 87% in solution and 45% in a film. High-quality films of the dendrimers are fabricated by spin-coating, producing highly efficient. non-doped electrophosphorescent organic light-ernitting diodes (OLEDs). With a device structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiopheiie):poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/neat dendrimer/1,3,5-tris(2-N-phenylbenzimidazolyl)benzene/LiF/Al, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.3% and a maximum luminous efficiency of 34.7 cd A(-1) are realized. By doping the dendrimers into a carbazole-based host, the maximum EQE can be further increased to 16.6%. The integration of rigid hole-transporting dendrons and phosphorescent complexes provides a new route to design highly efficient solution-processable dendrimers for OLED applications.

We studied the memory effect in the devices consisting of dye-doped N, N'-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N, N'-diphenyl-benzidine sandwiched between indium-tin oxide and Ag electrodes. It was found that the on/off current ratio was greatly improved by the doped fluorescent dyes compared with nondoping devices. A mechanism of charge trapping was demonstrated to explain the improvement of the memory effect. For the off state, the conduction process is dominated by the trapping current, which is a characteristic of the space-charge limited current, whereas the on state is dominated by the detrapping current, and interpreted by Poole-Frenkel emission.

The phase stability of lanthanum cerium oxide (La2Ce2O7), which is stable up to 1400 degrees C, and the thermal expansion coefficient of La2Ce2O7 doped with Ta2O5 or WO3 were studied. The thermal expansion coefficient of La2Ce2O7 below 400 degrees C was increased by adding more CeO2 or doping with either Ta2O5 or WO3.

A series of solid electrolytes, (Ce(0.8)Ln(0.2))(1 - x)MxO2 - delta(Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, M:Alkali-earth), were prepared by amorphous citrate gel method. XRD patterns indicate that a pure fluorite phase is formed at 800 degreesC. The electrical conductivity and the AC impedance spectra were measured. XPS spectra show that the oxygen vacancies increase owing to the MO doping, which results in the increase of the oxygen ionic transport number and conductivity. The performance of ceria-based solid electrolyte is improved. The effects of rare-earth and alkali-earth ions on the electricity were discussed. The open-circuit voltages and maximum power density of planar solid oxide fuel cell using (Ce0.8Sm0.2)(1 - 0.05)Ca0.05O2 - delta as electrolyte are 0.86 V and 33 mW . cm(-2), respectively.
