Exhaust emissions from diesel engines are a substantial source of air pollution in this country. In recognition of this fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has issued strict new regulations due to take effect -in 1991 and 1994 that will drastically reduce the amount of some pollutants these engines will be allowed to emit. The technology is not currently available to produce diesel engines that can meet these regulations without large penalties in engine performance and efficiency. One technique that offers promise of being able to reduce emissions from both existing engines and new engines is alcohol fumigation.

This article aims to analyse the introduction of environmental issues in the context of the production function, which has been referred to as the organisational area to lead corporate environmental management. With that purpose, the theoretical references for corporate environmental management and the necessary alterations in production function have been organised to include environmental aspects, especially in terms of product and process development, quality management, and logistics. Considering that this research field still lacks empirical evidence for Brazilian companies, four case studies were conducted using companies located in the country. The environmental management maturity level of those companies tends to follow the rate with which the environmental issue is introduced in production sub-areas, especially in the product development process. However, in most cases we found that the companies had difficulties in structuring the insertion of the environmental dimension in logistics. The final notes point out the distance observed between what is recommended by international literature and the reality of Brazilian companies in the challenge of making the production function environmentally friendly.

Atmospheric aerosols of four aerodynamic size ranges were collected using high volume cascade impactors in an extremely busy roadway tunnel in Lisbon (Portugal). Dust deposited on the tunnel walls and guardrails was also collected. Average particle mass concentrations in the tunnel atmosphere were more than 30 times higher than in the outside urban background air, revealing its origins almost exclusively from fresh vehicle emissions. Most of the aerosol mass was concentrated in submicrometer fractions (65%), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were even more concentrated in the finer particles with an average of 84% of total PAH present in sizes smaller than 0.49 mu m. The most abundant PAH were methylated phenanthrenes, fluoranthene and pyrene. About 46% of the total PAH mass was attributed to lower molecular weight compounds (two and three rings), suggesting a strong influence of diesel vehicle emissions on the production of local particulate PAH. The application of diagnostic ratios confirmed the relevance of this source of PAH in the tunnel ambient air. Deposited dust presented PAH profiles similar to the coarser aerosol size range, in agreement with the predominant origin of coarser aerosol particles from soil dust resuspension and vehicle wear products. Atmospheric pollution by motor vehicles is considered a relevant source of damage to architectural heritage. Thus the aim of this work was to assess the atmospheric depositions and patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in façades of historical monuments. Eighteen PAHs (16 PAHs considered by US EPA as priority pollutants, dibenzo[a,l]pyrene and benzo[j]fluoranthene) were determined in thin black layers collected from façades of two historical monuments: Hospital Santo António and Lapa Church (Oporto, Portugal). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for morphological and elemental characterisation of thin black layers; PAHs were quantified by microwave-assisted extraction combined with liquid chromatography (MAE-LC). The thickness of thin black layers were 80–110 μm and they contained significant levels of iron, sulfur, calcium and phosphorus. Total concentrations of 18 PAHs ranged from 7.74 to 147.92 ng/g (mean of 45.52 ng/g) in thin black layers of Hospital Santo António, giving a range three times lower than at Lapa Church (5.44– 429.26 ng/g; mean of 110.25 ng/g); four to six rings compounds accounted at both monuments approximately for 80–85% of ΣPAHs. The diagnostic ratios showed that traffic emissions were significant source of PAHs in thin black layers. Composition profiles of PAHs in thin black layers of both monuments were similar to those of ambient air, thus showing that air pollution has a significant impact on the conditions and stone decay of historical building façades. The obtained results confirm that historical monuments in urban areas act as passive repositories for air pollutants present in the surrounding atmosphere.

As caldeiras são equipamentos de extrema importância na maioria das indústrias portuguesas. É prática frequente os projectos de caldeiras possuírem apenas cálculos de materiais ou estruturais, nunca abordando as questões térmicas das mesmas. Neste contexto surge o presente trabalho que teve como principal objectivo estudar e modelar o comportamento térmico de uma caldeira alimentada a biomassa florestal. A caldeira em estudo é uma caldeira tubos de fumo com ante-fornalha, alimentada a biomassa e com pressão de funcionamento de 10 bar. A primeira parte do trabalho consistiu no levantamento de toda a informação relativa aos aspectos construtivos da caldeira e as condições de operação da mesma, através da consulta do seu projecto. O estudo do comportamento térmico da caldeira foi dividido em 2 partes: a modelação do comportamento térmico na ante-fornalha seguido da modelação do comportamento térmico do feixe tubular. Na ante fornalha admitiu-se que o calor seria transferido do gás para as paredes da mesma por convecção e por radiação, tendo-se utilizado o Método de Hottel para modelar a transferência de calor por radiação. No feixe tubular a transferência de calor por radiação foi desprezada, tendo-se considerado apenas transferência de calor por condução e convecção entre os gases quentes e a água. Os resultados obtidos mostram que, na ante-fornalha, o peso da potência transferida por radiação (96%) é muito superior à potência transferida por convecção (4%), tendo-se obtido os valores de 384,8 kW e de 16,0 kW para a potência térmica transferida por radiação e por convecção, respectivamente. O valor obtido para a temperatura dos gases na ante-fornalha foi de 1085 K. No feixe tubular a potência térmica transferida por convecção foi de 2559 kW tendo-se obtido o valor de 240ºC para a temperatura de exaustão dos gases pela chaminé. As perdas para o exterior foram estimadas em 1,5 %. O balanço global de energia à caldeira indicou um peso para a potência transferida por convecção de 86,3% e para a potência transferida por radiação de 13,6%. O rendimento da caldeira foi calculado pelo método das perdas tendo-se obtido o valor de 39%.

All organisations make some contribution to the degradation of the environment through their use of resources and production of waste. Environmental management systems (EMS) standards can provide a tool for companies to systematically reduce their environmental impacts. ISO 14001 was published in 1996. This fitted in with plans of the case study company to take proactive action in this area, even though there was no legislative requirement for them to do so. As EMS implementation was a new area at the time, appropriate methodologies were developed to address different aspects of the implementation, and ISO 14001 was successfully implemented in the company. The results of the primary research included: ♦ Drawing up a methodology for identifying and interpreting the environmental legislation that may have an impact on the organisation and compiling a register of such regulations. ♦ Developing a robust methodology for assessing significant environmental aspects and impacts and applying this to the software company. ♦ Establishing objectives and targets for those aspects identified as significant and implementing environmental management programmes to meet these. ♦ Developing an internal environmental audit procedure based on auditing against the significant aspects. ♦ Integrating areas of the EMS with the existing quality management system in order to avoid duplication of effort. ♦ Undergoing an external assessment process in order to achieve certification of the system. The thesis concludes that the systematic approach defined in ISO 14001 provided a mechanism that the organisation was able to adopt to bring about improvement in its environmental performance. The system was based on a thorough evaluation of the organisation's significant environmental aspects in order to bring about a reduction in its negative impacts. The ISO 14001 requirement for continual improvement is the key driver of the system, and this is what differentiates it from ISO 9000.

Potential risks of a secondary formation of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) were assessed for two cordierite-based, wall-through diesel particulate filters (DPFs) for which soot combustion was either catalyzed with an iron- or a copper-based fuel additive. A heavy duty diesel engine was used as test platform, applying the eight-stage ISO 8178/4 C1 cycle. DPF applications neither affected the engine performance, nor did they increase NO, NO2, CO, and CO2 emissions. The latter is a metric for fuel consumption. THC emissions decreased by about 40% when deploying DPFs. PCDD/F emissions, with a focus on tetra- to octachlorinated congeners, were compared under standard and worst case conditions (enhanced chlorine uptake). The iron-catalyzed DPF neither increased PCDD/F emissions, nor did it change the congener pattern, even when traces of chlorine became available. In case of copper, PCDD/F emissions increased by up to 3 orders of magnitude from 22 to 200 to 12 700 pg I-TEQ/L with fuels of < 2, 14, and 110 microg/g chlorine, respectively. Mainly lower chlorinated DD/Fs were formed. Based on these substantial effects on PCDD/F emissions, the copper-catalyzed DPF system was not approved for workplace applications, whereas the iron system fulfilled all the specifications of the Swiss procedures for DPF approval (VERT).

El present projecte té com objecte realitzar una casa que sigui eficient energèticament a partir d’una casa ja construïda, modificant així tot el que sigui necessari per poder aconseguir una millora del comportament bioclimàtic de la casa i una major independència dels subministraments de la xarxa pública (electricitat i gas). El projecte es divideix en tres fases clarament diferenciades: una primera consistent en realitzar una recerca dels sistemes constructius que fan que una casa funcioni millor i sigui més eficient a nivell energètic (façana ventilada, forjat sanitari, coberta enjardinada ,etc) i també consistent en realitzar un estudi dels sistemes o mètodes de producció d’energia més ecològics (energia solar, geotèrmia, energia eòlica, etc), que facin la casa més autònoma en quan a les energies i subministraments de la xarxa pública de distribució (electricitat i gas); una segona fase consistient en triar els sistemes constructius i de producció d’energia tenint en compte la informació obtinguda de la recerca inicial i aplicar aquests sobre una casa unifamiliar amb sistemes constructius i de producció d’energia tradicional (façana amb obra vista, calefacció amb caldera a gas i radiadors,etc) elegida a l’atzar; i una tercera i última fase consistent en fer un comparatiu econòmic entre el cost de construcció de la casa amb sistemes tradicionals i de la casa eficient. Després és farà una estimació de l’estalvi energètic d’una i de l’altra casa, i amb tot això es valorarà si són amortitzables les despeses que s’han realitzat per aconseguir aquests estalvis energètics

BACKGROUND There is a growing worldwide trend of obesity in children. Identifying the causes and modifiable factors associated with child obesity is important in order to design effective public health strategies.Our objective was to provide empirical evidence of the association that some individual and environmental factors may have with child excess weight. METHOD A cross-sectional study was performed using multi-stage probability sampling of 978 Spanish children aged between 8 and 17 years, with objectively measured height and weight, along with other individual, family and neighborhood variables. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated. RESULTS In 2012, 4 in 10 children were either overweight or obese with a higher prevalence amongst males and in the 8-12 year age group. Child obesity was associated negatively with the socio-economic status of the adult responsible for the child's diet, OR 0.78 (CI95% 0.59-1.00), girls OR 0.75 (CI95% 0.57-0.99), older age of the child (0.41; CI95% 0.31-0.55), daily breakfast (OR 0.59; p = 0.028) and half an hour or more of physical activity every day. No association was found for neighborhood variables relating to perceived neighborhood quality and safety. CONCLUSION This study identifies potential modifiable factors such as physical activity, daily breakfast and caregiver education as areas for public health policies. To be successful, an intervention should take into account both individual and family factors when designing prevention strategies to combat the worldwide epidemic of child excess weight.
