La finalità della tesi è quella di poter progettare il cerchione del veicolo solare "Emilia 5" in materiale composito. Questa auto è l’evoluzione della "Emilia 4", sviluppata dalla squadra Onda Solare in collaborazione con l’Università di Bologna, con cui sono state vinte molte gare. Tramite software (Ansys) è stato realizzato il modello virtuale del cerchione in fibra di carbonio e, con l'ausilio dell'analisi agli elementi finiti, ne è stata verificata la stabilità, sottoponendolo a cinque condizioni di carico diverse. Lo studio approfondisce le tematiche riguardanti i materiali compositi, il concetto di sequenza di laminazione e come varia la distribuzione delle tensioni al variare di esse. In particolare, viene analizzato con attenzione lo studio tramite software della sequenza di laminazione che permette di ottenere i risultati migliori per il tipo di applicazione. Infine, vengono confrontati i dati ottenuti dalle simulazioni effettuate, per l'analisi e lo studio dei dati significativi.

Nel seguente elaborato viene ripercorso il lavoro svolto per la progettazione di un box batterie in materiale composito e in particolare il relativo sistema di fissaggio al telaio che verrà utilizzato per l’auto solare Emilia 5. Questo prototipo di veicolo, che viene sviluppato dai membri del team Onda Solare presso l’azienda Metal TIG a Castel San Pietro Terme (BO), è un’auto completamente elettrica che sfrutta l’energia solare attraverso pannelli fotovoltaici e la cui propulsione è garantita dalla sola energia accumulata nelle batterie. Emilia 5 gareggerà all’evento World Solar Challenge 2023 in Australia, competizione riservata alle auto solari che vede impegnati teams da tutto il mondo. L’elaborato mostra inizialmente la modellazione geometrica tridimensionale delle parti sviluppata attraverso il software Solidworks, analizzandone i dettagli funzionali. In seguito, tramite il software Ansys Workbench, vengono eseguite simulazioni agli elementi finiti verificando che i componenti, considerati in alluminio, rispondano correttamente ai carichi imposti. Per ultimo, vengono menzionati i materiali compositi in fibra di carbonio e si analizza la sequenza di laminazione relativa alla scatola delle batterie. I risultati ottenuti saranno utilizzati dal team Onda Solare come punto di riferimento per la realizzazione dei componenti di Emilia 5.

A saúde bucal na maioria dos municípios brasileiros constitui ainda um grande desafio aos princípios doutrinários do SUS. Este estudo objetivou analisar a prevalência de cárie dentária (CPOD) e as diferenças quanto ao gênero e localização geográfica, Significant Caries Index (SiC) e a porcentagem de livres de cárie no município de Itaí, São Paulo, em 2006. Utilizou-se a metodologia da OMS (1997), em uma população constituída por 390; destes, 178 adolescentes aos 12 anos de idade e que correspondem a 46% dos adolescentes matriculados nas escolas do município. O exame foi realizado por um único examinador. O teste kappa foi calculado com valor de concordância de 0,95. O índice CPOD foi de 2, 45, o SiC de 5, 08, e 30% dos indivíduos se apresentaram livres de cárie. Observou-se que 34% dos adolescentes concentraram 70% da doença demonstrando a ocorrência da polarização da cárie dentária. Foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significantes na comparação do CPOD entre a localização geográfica e o mesmo não aconteceu com o gênero. Concluiu-se que está ocorrendo a polarização da cárie dentária em adolescentes, aos 12 anos, mas esta ocorrência não se apresenta de forma homogênea. Os problemas se intensificam em uma pequena parcela da população.

Multicomponent white cast iron is a new alloy that belongs to system Fe-C-Cr-W-Mo-V, and because of its excellent wear resistance it is used in the manufacture of hot rolling mills rolls. To date, this alloy has been processed by casting, powder metallurgy, and spray forming. The high-velocity oxyfuel process is now also considered for the manufacture of components with this alloy. The effects of substrate, preheating temperature, and coating thickness on bond strength of coatings have been determined. Substrates of AISI 1020 steel and of cast iron with preheating of 150 A degrees C and at room temperature were used to apply coatings with 200 and 400 mu m nominal thickness. The bond strength of coatings was measured with the pull-off test method and the failure mode by scanning electron microscopic analysis. Coatings with thickness of 200 mu m and applied on substrates of AISI 1020 steel with preheating presented bond strength of 87 +/- A 4 MPa.

The combined-cycle gas and steam turbine power plant presents three main pieces of equipment: gas turbines, steam turbines and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). In case of HRSG failure the steam cycle is shut down, reducing the power plant output. Considering that the technology for design, construction and operation of high capacity HRSGs is quite recent its availability should be carefully evaluated in order to foresee the performance of the power plant. This study presents a method for reliability and availability evaluation of HRSGs installed in combined-cycle power plant. The method`s first step consists in the elaboration of the steam generator functional tree and development of failure mode and effects analysis. The next step involves a reliability and availability analysis based on the time to failure and time to repair data recorded during the steam generator operation. The third step, aiming at availability improvement, recommends the fault-tree analysis development to identify components the failure (or combination of failures) of which can cause the HRSG shutdown. Those components maintenance policy can be improved through the use of reliability centered maintenance (RCM) concepts. This article describes a new test method for the assessment of the severity of environmental stress cracking of biomedical polyurethanes in a manner that minimizes the degree of subjectivity involved. The effect of applied strain and acetone pre-treatment on degradation of Pellethane 2363 80A and Pellethane 2363 55D polyurethanes under in vitro and in vivo conditions is studied. The results are presented using a magnification-weighted image rating system that allows the semi-quantitative rating of degradation based on distribution and severity of surface damage. Devices for applying controlled strain to both flat sheet and tubing samples are described. The new rating system consistently discriminated between. the effects of acetone pre-treatments, strain and exposure times in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. As expected, P80A underwent considerable stress cracking compared with P55D. P80A produced similar stress crack ratings in both in vivo and in vitro experiments, however P55D performed worse under in vitro conditions compared with in vivo. This result indicated that care must be taken when interpreting in vitro results in the absence of in vivo data. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A system has been developed for studying the biodegradation of natural and synthetic polymeric material. The system is based on standard methods developed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN TC 261) (ISO/DIS 14855) and the American Society of Testing Materials, 'ASTM. Standard Test Method for Determining Aerobic. Biodegradation of Plastic Materials under Controlled Composting Conditions' (ASTM D 5338-92). A new low-cost compost facility has been used which satisfies the requirements of these standards. The system has been automated for data collection and has been run under the conditions specified by the standards. In the system, cellulose, newspaper and two starch-based polymers were treated with compost in a series of 3dm(3) vessels at 52 degreesC and under conditions of optimum moisture and pH. The degradation was followed over time by measuring the amount of carbon released as carbon dioxide. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

The numerical implementation of the complex image approach for the Green's function of a mixed-potential integralequation formulation is examined and is found to be limited to low values of k(0) rho (in this context k(0) rho = 2 pirho/ lambda(0), where rho is the distance between the source and the field points of the Green's function and lambda(0) is the free space wavelength). This is a clear limitation for problems of large dimension or high frequency where this limit is easily exceeded. This paper examines the various strategies and proposes a hybrid method whereby most of the above problems can be avoided. An efficient integral method that is valid for large k(0) rho is combined with the complex image method in order to take advantage of the relative merits of both schemes. It is found that a wide overlapping region exists between the two techniques allowing a very efficient and consistent approach for accurately calculating the Green's functions. In this paper, the method developed for the computation of the Green's function is used for planar structures containing both lossless and lossy media.

Interest in polyethylene and polypropylene bonding has increased in the last years. However, adhesive joints with adherends which are of low surface energy and which are chemically inert present several difficulties. Generally, their high degree of chemical resistance to solvents and dissimilar solubility parameters limit the usefulness of solvent bonding as a viable assembly technique. One successful approach to adhesive bonding of these materials involves proper selection of surface pre-treatment prior to bonding. With the correct pre-treatment it is possible to glue these materials with one or more of several adhesives required by the applications involved. A second approach is the use of adhesives without surface pre-treatment, such as hot melts, high tack pressure-sensitive adhesives, solvent-based specialty adhesives and, more recently, structural acrylic adhesives as such 3M DP-8005® and Loctite 3030®. In this paper, the shear strengths of two acrylic adhesives were evaluated using the lap shear test method ASTM D3163 and the block shear test method ASTM D4501. Two different industrial polyolefins (polyethylene and polypropylene) were used for adherends. However, the focus of this study was to measure the shear strength of polyethylene joints with acrylic adhesives. The effect of abrasion was also studied. Some test specimens were manually abraded using 180 and 320 grade abrasive paper. An additional goal of this work was to examine the effect of temperature and moisture on mechanical strength of adhesive joints.

O ensaio de dureza, e mais concretamente o ensaio de micro dureza Vickers, é no universo dos ensaios mecânicos um dos mais utilizados quer seja na indústria, no ensino ou na investigação e desenvolvimento de produto no âmbito das ciências dos materiais. Na grande maioria dos casos, a utilização deste ensaio tem como principal aplicação a caracterização ou controlo da qualidade de fabrico de materiais metálicos. Sendo um ensaio de relativa simplicidade de execução, rapidez e com resultados comparáveis e relacionáveis a outras grandezas físicas das propriedades dos materiais. Contudo, e tratando-se de um método de ensaio cuja intervenção humana é importante, na medição da indentação gerada por penetração mecânica através de um sistema ótico, não deixa de exibir algumas debilidades que daí advêm, como sendo o treino dos técnicos e respetivas acuidades visuais, fenómenos de fadiga visual que afetam os resultados ao longo de um turno de trabalho; ora estes fenómenos afetam a repetibilidade e reprodutibilidade dos resultados obtidos no ensaio. O CINFU possui um micro durómetro Vickers, cuja realização dos ensaios depende de um técnico treinado para a execução do mesmo, apresentando todas as debilidades já mencionadas e que o tornou elegível para o estudo e aplicação de uma solução alternativa. Assim, esta dissertação apresenta o desenvolvimento de uma solução alternativa ao método ótico convencional na medição de micro dureza Vickers. Utilizando programação em LabVIEW da National Instruments, juntamente com as ferramentas de visão computacional (NI Vision), o programa começa por solicitar ao técnico a seleção da câmara para aquisição da imagem digital acoplada ao micro durómetro, seleção do método de ensaio (Força de ensaio); posteriormente o programa efetua o tratamento da imagem (aplicação de filtros para eliminação do ruído de fundo da imagem original), segue-se, por indicação do operador, a zona de interesse (ROI) e por sua vez são identificadas automaticamente os vértices da calote e respetivas distâncias das diagonais geradas concluindo, após aceitação das mesmas, com o respetivo cálculo de micro dureza resultante. Para validação dos resultados foram utilizados blocos-padrão de dureza certificada (CRM), cujos resultados foram satisfatórios, tendo-se obtido um elevado nível de exatidão nas medições efetuadas. Por fim, desenvolveu-se uma folha de cálculo em Excel com a determinação da incerteza associada às medições de micro dureza Vickers. Foram então comparados os resultados nas duas metodologias possíveis, pelo método ótico convencional e pela utilização das ferramentas de visão computacional, tendo-se obtido bons resultados com a solução proposta.

Pavements require maintenance in order to provide good service levels during their life period. Because of the significant costs of this operation and the importance of a proper planning, a pavement evaluation methodology, named Pavement Condition Index (PCI), was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This methodology allows for the evaluation of the pavement condition along the life period, generally yearly, with minimum costs and, in this way, it is possible to plan the maintenance action and to adopt adequate measures, minimising the rehabilitation costs. The PCI methodology provides an evaluation based on visual inspection, namely on the distresses observed on the pavement. This condition index of the pavement is classified from 0 to 100, where 0 it is the worst possible condition and 100 the best possible condition. This methodology of pavement assessment represents a significant tool for management methods such as airport pavement management system (APMS) and life-cycle costs analysis (LCCA). Nevertheless, it has some limitations which can jeopardize the correct evaluation of the pavement behavior. Therefore the objective of this dissertation is to help reducing its limitations and make it easier and faster to use. Thus, an automated process of PCI calculation was developed, avoiding the abaci consultation, and consequently, minimizing the human error. To facilitate also the visual inspection a Tablet application was developed to replace the common inspection data sheet and thus making the survey easier to be undertaken. Following, an airport pavement condition was study accordingly with the methodology described at Standard Test Method for Airport Pavement Condition Index Surveys D5340, 2011 where its original condition level is compared with the condition level after iterate possible erroneous considered distresses as well as possible rehabilitations. Afterwards, the results obtained were analyzed and the main conclusions presented together with some future developments.

Identification of the tensile constitutive behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) represents an important aspect of the design of structural elements using this material. Although an important step has been made with the introduction of guidance for the design with regular FRC in the recently published fib Model Code 2010, a better understanding of the behaviour of this material is still necessary, mainly for that with self-compacting properties. This work presents an experimental investigation employing Steel Fibre Self-Compacting Concrete (SFRSCC) to cast thin structural elements. A new test method is proposed for assessing the post-cracking behaviour and the results obtained with the proposed test method are compared with the ones resulted from the standard three-point bending tests (3PBT). Specimens extracted from a sandwich panel consisting of SFRSCC layers are also tested. The mechanical properties of SFRSCC are correlated to the fibre distribution by analysing the results obtained with the different tests. Finally, the stress-crack width constitutive law proposed by the fib Model Code 2010 is analysed in light of the experimental results.

ACuteTox is a project within the 6th European Framework Programme which had as one of its goals to develop, optimise and prevalidate a non-animal testing strategy for predicting human acute oral toxicity. In its last 6 months, a challenging exercise was conducted to assess the predictive capacity of the developed testing strategies and final identification of the most promising ones. Thirty-two chemicals were tested blind in the battery of in vitro and in silico methods selected during the first phase of the project. This paper describes the classification approaches studied: single step procedures and two step tiered testing strategies. In summary, four in vitro testing strategies were proposed as best performing in terms of predictive capacity with respect to the European acute oral toxicity classification. In addition, a heuristic testing strategy is suggested that combines the prediction results gained from the neutral red uptake assay performed in 3T3 cells, with information on neurotoxicity alerts identified by the primary rat brain aggregates test method. Octanol-water partition coefficients and in silico prediction of intestinal absorption and blood-brain barrier passage are also considered. This approach allows to reduce the number of chemicals wrongly predicted as not classified (LD50>2000 mg/kg b.w.).
