Conventional oven drying (COD) and supercritical drying (SCD) methods were applied to the preparation of Mn-substituted hexaaluminate (BaMnA(11)O(19-alpha)) catalysts. The effect of drying methods on phase composition, specific surface area, pore structure and combustion activity of the samples was investigated. The samples obtained by SCD have higher surface area, narrower pore size distribution, and higher combustion activity than those obtained by COD.

LaMnxAl12-xO19 catalysts were prepared from NH4OH and metal nitrates solutions. Supercritical drying (SCD) and conventional oven drying (CD) methods were used to extract the water in the hydrogel. The effects of drying methods on properties of the catalysts were investigated by means of TEM, N-2-adsorption, thermogravimetry (TG)-differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction. SCD method is beneficial to maintain high surface area and improving catalytic activity for methane combustion of the catalyst. The specific surface area and pore volume of LaMn1Al11O19 catalyst prepared by SCD method are 28 m(2)/g and 0.23 cm(3)/g, respectively, and the ignition of methane could be carried out at 450degreesC. However, those of the CD catalyst prepared from the same precursor are 15 m(2)/g, 0.11 cm(3)/g and 530 degreesC, respectively. Suitable Mn content (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2) could promote the formation of LaMnAl11O19 hexaaluminate, while further addition of Mn (2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 6) cause the formation of LaMnO3. A wear mechanism map of uncoated high-speed steel (HSS) tools was constructed under the conditions of dry-drilling die-cast magnesium alloys. Three wear mechanisms appear in the map based on the microanalysis of drilled HSS tools by SEM, including adhesive wear, abrasive wear and diffusion wear. In the map, there exists a minor wear region which is called "safety zone". This wear mechanism map will be a good reference for choosing suitable drilling parameters when drilling die-cast magnesium alloys.

The effect of Nd addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a die-cast AZ91 alloy was investigated in the present work. The results show that the die-cast AZ91 alloy is composed of alpha-Mg matrix and gamma-Mg17Al12 phase. Nd addition into the AZ91 alloy leads to the formation of rare earth containing intermetallic phase. Al4Nd phase forms when Nd content is less than or equal to 1.0 wt.%. Al2Nd phase appears simultaneously when Nd content reaches to 3.0 wt.%.

The electrochemical deposition of magnesium was investigated in ethereal Grignard salt solution with tetraethylammonium bistrifluoro-methanesulfonimidate additive, using cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic transients, and scanning electron microscope measurements. The voltammograms showed the presence of reduction and oxidation peaks associated with the deposition and dissolution of magnesium. From the analysis of the experimental current transients, it was shown that the magnesium deposition process was characterized as a three-dimensional nucleation. The deposited product obtained from potentiostatic reduction presented a generally uniform and dense film.

The electrolytic deposition and diffusion of lithium onto bulk magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium alloy cathode in molten salt of 47 wt pct lithium chloride and 53 wt pct potassium chloride at 693 K were investigated. Results show that magnesium-yttrium-lithium ternary alloys are formed on the surface of the cathodes, and a penetration depth of 642 mu m is acquired after 2 hours of electrolysis at the cathodic current density of 0.06 A center dot cm(-2). The diffusion of lithium results in a great amount of precipitates in the lithium containing layer. These precipitates are the compound of Mg41Y5, which arrange along the grain boundaries and hinder the diffusion of lithium, and solid solution of yttrium in magnesium. The grain boundaries and the twins of the magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium substrate also have negative effects on the diffusion of lithium.

In the present work, the edge-to-edge matching model has been introduced to predict the orientation relationships (OR) between the MgZn2 phase which has hexagonal close packed (HCP) structure and the HCP a-Mg matrix. Based on the crystal structures and lattice parameters only, the model has predicted the two most preferred ORs and they are: (1) [1 1 2 3](alpha-Mg) vertical bar vertical bar]1 1 2 3](alpha-Mg), (0 0 0 1)(alpha-Mg) 0.27 degrees from (0 0 0 1)(MgZn2), (1 0 1 1)(alpha-Mg) 26.18 degrees from (1 1 2 2)(MgZn2), (2) [1 0 1 0](alpha-Mg),vertical bar vertical bar[1 1 2 0](MgZn2), (0 0 0 1)(alpha-Mg) vertical bar vertical bar(0 0 0 1)(MgZn2), (1 0 1 1)(alpha-Mg) 3.28 degrees from ( 1 1 2 2)(MgZn2). Four experimental ORs have been reported in the alpha-Mg/MgZn2 system, and the most frequently reported one is ideally the OR (2). The other three experimental ORs are near versions of the OR (2). The habit plane of the OR (2) has been predicted and it agrees well with the experimental results.

The Mg-8Zn-8Al-4RE (RE = mischmetal, mass%) magnesium alloy was prepared by using casting method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast alloy, solid solution alloy and aged alloy samples have been investigated. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometery and scanning electron microscope attached energy spectrometer were used to characterize the microstructure and phase composition for the alloy. Net shaped tau-Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49) phase was obtained at the grain boundary, and needle-like or blocky Al11RE3 phase disperses in grain boundary and alpha-Mg matrix. The tau-Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49) phase disappeared during solution treatment and a new phase of Al(2)CeZn2 formed during subsequent age treatment. The mechanical properties were performed by universal testing machine at room temperature, 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C, separately. The ultimate tensile strength of as-cast alloy is lower compared to an age treatment alloy at 200 degrees C for 12h. The strengths decreased with enhancing test temperature, but elongation has not been effect by age treatment.

Spark discharge was the representative phenomenon of Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method distinguished from other electrochemical oxidation methods. Under the spark discharge treatment, characteristics of the anodic layer were significantly changed. To investigate the influences of the spark discharge, a piece of magnesium alloy AZ91D specimen was partly treated by MAO method in alkaline silicate solution. And the microstructure, element distributions as well as the surface potential distributions of the specimen were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) technique. As a result of intensive spark discharge treatment, porous external layer with dense internal layer were formed on Mg alloy surface. At the same time, the depositions of OH- and SiO32- ions were accelerated, which resulted in the enrichment of element oxygen and silicon at the spark discharge region. Moreover, due to the compact internal layer, the intensive spark discharge region exhibited more positive potentials with respect to other regions, which meant this region could restrain the ejection of electron and provide effective protection to the substrate. In addition, it was found that oxygen played a vital role in determining the intensity and size of sparks, and abundant oxygen resulted in intensive and larger sparks. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
