Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal tumors of >50 subtypes. However, STSs represent <1% of types of cancer. Despite this low frequency, the disease is aggressive and treatment, when possible, is based on traditional chemotherapies. A number of cases of resistance to adjuvant therapies have been reported. Metastases are commonly identified in STS patients during diagnosis and the development of effective clinical parameters is crucial for correct management of the disease. The use of biological markers in cancer is a useful tool to determine patient prognosis. Ki--67 is a protein marker for proliferation of somatic cells and is widely used in prognostic studies of various types of tumor, including STSs. Cluster of differentiation 100 (CD100) is a member of the semaphorin family. The family was initially described as axon guidance molecules important for angiogenesis, organogenesis, apoptosis and neoplasia. CD100 was previously utilized as a prognostic factor in tumors and also in STSs. In the present study, protein expression of Ki--67 and CD100 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in samples of STS patients of the Barretos Cancer Hospital (Barretos, Brazil) to establish prognostic criteria of the disease. Results demonstrate a correlation between CD100 expression and poor prognosis, consistent with a previous study. Moreover, the expression of Ki-67 was identified to correlate with presence of local or locoregional recurrence. To the best of our knowledge, no large casuistic study has revealed this correlation between Ki--67 and local recurrence in STSs. The use of Ki--67 and CD100 as markers in clinical pathological analysis may be suitable as a prognostic criterion in disease progression.

Electronic properties of disordered binary alloys are studied via the calculation of the average Density of States (DOS) in two and three dimensions. We propose a new approximate scheme that allows for the inclusion of local order effects in finite geometries and extrapolates the behavior of infinite systems following finite-size scaling ideas. We particularly investigate the limit of the Quantum Site Percolation regime described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian. This limit was chosen to probe the role of short range order (SRO) properties under extreme conditions. The method is numerically highly efficient and asymptotically exact in important limits, predicting the correct DOS structure as a function of the SRO parameters. Magnetic field effects can also be included in our model to study the interplay of local order and the shifted quantum interference driven by the field. The average DOS is highly sensitive to changes in the SRO properties and striking effects are observed when a magnetic field is applied near the segregated regime. The new effects observed are twofold: there is a reduction of the band width and the formation of a gap in the middle of the band, both as a consequence of destructive interference of electronic paths and the loss of coherence for particular values of the magnetic field. The above phenomena are periodic in the magnetic flux. For other limits that imply strong localization, the magnetic field produces minor changes in the structure of the average DOS. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Discussions about the new meaning of citizenship, valuing differences and respecting knowledge diversity bring the question of how public policies can be locally rooted to ensure access to diversity. This is evident when we deal with health policies, where the interaction between implementers and beneficiaries is essential to understand the results of the policy. The Family Health Program (FHP) has tried to change the relationship between state and society, bringing health professionals with the daily experienced by the users where there is (re) production of the components that lead to insecurity, poor health and disease. To analyse this kind of policy we must take into account the interaction processes and the practices of the actors involved in the FHP implementation. This article aims to analyze the role of Health Communitarian Agents (HCA) as FHP implementers. Through ethnographic research followed the practices of ACS in different cities, we seek to understand how they deal with their different knowledge, enable and disable referrals and adapt action to enact the program. We want to understand how they use mediations and interactions in their practices and built policies locally rooted, constructing alternative ways to implement these policies.

The knowledge of electronic and local structures is a fundamental step towards understanding the properties of ferroelectric ceramics. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of Pb1-xLaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 ferroelectric samples was measured in order to know how the local order and electronic structure are related to their ferroelectric property, which was tailored by the substitution of lead by lanthanum atoms. The analysis of XANES spectra collected at Ti K- and L-edges XANES showed that the substitution of Pb by La leads to a decrement of local distortion around Ti atoms on the TiO6 octahedron. The analysis of O K-edge XANES spectra showed that the hybridization between O 2p and Pb 6sp states is related to the displacement of Ti atoms in the TiO6 octahedra. Based on these results, it is possible to determine that the degree of ferroelectricity in these samples and the manifestation of relaxor behavior are directly related to the weakening of O 2p and Pb 6sp hybridization. We derive asymptotic expansions for the nonnull distribution functions of the likelihood ratio, Wald, score and gradient test statistics in the class of dispersion models, under a sequence of Pitman alternatives. The asymptotic distributions of these statistics are obtained for testing a subset of regression parameters and for testing the precision parameter. Based on these nonnull asymptotic expansions, the power of all four tests, which are equivalent to first order, are compared. Furthermore, in order to compare the finite-sample performance of these tests in this class of models, Monte Carlo simulations are presented. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Anwendung der Rasterkraftmikroskopie auf die Untersuchung mesostrukturierter Materialien. Mesostrukturierte Materialien setzen sich aus einzelnen mesoskopen Bausteinen zusammen. Diese Untereinheiten bestimmen im Wesentlichen ihr charakteristisches Verhalten auf äußere mechanische oder elektrische Reize, weshalb diesen Materialien eine besondere Rolle in der Natur sowie im täglichen Leben zukommt. Ein genaues Verständnis der Selbstorganisation dieser Materialien und der Wechselwirkung der einzelnen Bausteine untereinander ist daher von essentieller Bedeutung zur Entwicklung neuer Synthesestrategien sowie zur Optimierung ihrer Materialeigenschaften. Die Charakterisierung dieser mesostrukturierten Materialien erfolgt üblicherweise mittels makroskopischer Analysemethoden wie der dielektrischen Breitbandspektroskopie, Thermogravimetrie sowie in Biegungsexperimenten. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, wie sich diese Analysemethoden mit der Rasterkraftmikroskopie verbinden lassen, um mesostrukturierte Materialien zu untersuchen. Die Rasterkraftmikroskopie bietet die Möglichkeit, die Oberfläche eines Materials abzubilden und zusätzlich dazu seine quantitativen Eigenschaften, wie die mechanische Biegefestigkeit oder die dielektrische Relaxation, zu bestimmen. Die Übertragung makroskopischer Analyseverfahren auf den Nano- bzw. Mikrometermaßstab mittels der Rasterkraftmikroskopie erlaubt die Charakterisierung von räumlich sehr begrenzten Proben bzw. von Proben, die nur in einer sehr kleinen Menge (&lt;10 mg) vorliegen. Darüberhinaus umfasst das Auflösungsvermögen eines Rasterkraftmikroskops, welche durch die Größe seines Federbalkens (50 µm) sowie seines Spitzenradius (5 nm) definiert ist, genau den Längenskalenbereich, der einzelne Atome mit der makroskopischen Welt verbindet, nämlich die Mesoskala. In dieser Arbeit werden Polymerfilme, kolloidale Nanofasern sowie Biomineralien ausführlicher untersucht.rnIm ersten Projekt werden mittels Rasterkraftmikroskopie dielektrische Spektren von mischbaren Polymerfilmen aufgenommen und mit ihrer lokalen Oberflächenstruktur korreliert. Im zweiten Projekt wird die Rasterkraftmikroskopie eingesetzt, um Biegeexperimente an kolloidalen Nanofasern durchzuführen und so ihre Brucheigenschaften genauer zu untersuchen. Im letzten Projekt findet diese Methode Anwendung bei der Charakterisierung der Biegeeigenschaften von Biomineralien. Des Weiteren erfolgt eine Analyse der organischen Zusammensetzung dieser Biomineralien. Alle diese Projekte demonstrieren die vielseitige Einsetzbarkeit der Rasterkraftmikroskopie zur Charakterisierung mesostrukturierter Materialien. Die Korrelation ihrer mechanischen und dielektrischen Eigenschaften mit ihrer topographischen Beschaffenheit erlaubt ein tieferes Verständnis der mesoskopischen Materialien und ihres Verhaltens auf die Einwirkung äußerer Stimuli.rn

To determine the local control and complication rates for children with papillary and/or macular retinoblastoma progressing after chemotherapy and undergoing stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) with a micromultileaf collimator.
