The objectives were to evaluate preweaning performance, body composition, and efficiency of calves representing straightbred Nellore (NL), F(1), and 3-breed-cross systems. Energy requirements, milk production, and efficiency of 39 cow-calf pairs were recorded from straightbred NL calves from NL cows (10), crossbred (Angus-sired) calves from NL cows (ANL: 9), and crossbred calves (CC; Canchim-sired: 5/8 Charolais, 3/8 Zebu) from ANL (10) and Simmental x NL (10) cows. Cows and their respective calves were individually fed from birth to weaning (17 to 190 d postpartum). At 38 d of age, corn silage (7.8% CP, 2.19 Mcal of ME/kg of DM) was available to calves ad libitum. Milk production at 42, 98, 126, and 180 d postpartum was recorded by weighing calves before and after suckling. The ratio between GE and ME of milk was considered 1:0.93. Calves were slaughtered at weaning and the 9th-, 10th-, and 11th-rib section was removed for body composition estimation. The ANL calves were lighter (P < 0.01) at birth than the CC calves; the NL calves were intermediate. At weaning, the CC calves were heavier (P = 0.04) than the NL and ANL calves (230 +/- 5.5 vs. 172 +/- 8.1 and 209 +/- 8.6 kg, respectively). The ANL calves had greater (371 +/- 27 Mcal; P = 0.01) silage intake than the NL (270 +/- 25 Mcal) and CC (279 +/- 17 Mcal) calves. Milk energy intake was greater for the CC calves (970 +/- 38 Mcal of ME; P = 0.005) than the NL (670 +/- 57 Mcal of ME) and ANL (743 +/- 61 Mcal of ME) calves. The ANL calves compensated for the reduced milk production of the NL cows, which supplied less of their energy requirement for growth by increased silage intake. Calves from crossbred cows received a greater proportion of their total energy intake from milk. Crossbred calves had greater (P < 0.03) retained energy (retained energy = weaning body energy - birth body energy) than the NL calves (388 +/- 23 for ANL, and 438 +/- 15 for CC vs. 312 +/- 22 Mcal for NL calves). Percentages of water (P = 0.74) and chemical fat (P = 0.51) were similar among groups (63.7 +/- 0.6 and 14.3 +/- 0.7% for ANL calves, 63.1 +/- 0.4 and 14.7 +/- 0.5% for CC calves, and 63.3 +/- 0.6 and 13.7 +/- 0.7% of empty BW for water and chemical fat, respectively, for NL calves). Energetic efficiency (kcal of retained energy/Mcal of ME intake) was similar (P = 0.52) among groups (358 +/- 22 for ANL calves, 355 +/- 14 for CC calves, and 327 +/- 22 for NL calves). The greater BW gains and the differences in empty body composition at weaning were not enough to compensate for the greater ME intake of crossbreds. In this study, the crossbreeding systems evaluated increased preweaning calf performance but did not affect gross or energetic calf efficiency.

Four substrata were offered to groups of adult Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (one male and two females) simultaneously: pure sand, a mixture of sand and shells, stones and no substratum. The results showed that males chose to dig nests in a lighter and more homogeneous substratum.

Watson is a fully developed suburb of some 30 years in Canberra (the capital city of Australia), A plunge dip using arsenical pesticides for tick control was operated there between 1946 and 1960, Chemical investigations revealed that many soil samples obtained from the study area contained levels of arsenic exceeding the current health-based investigation levels of 100 mg kg(-1) set by the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia, For the speciation study, nine composite samples of surface and sub-surface soils and a composite sample of rocks were selected. ICP-MS analysis showed that arsenic levels in these samples ranged from 32 to 1597 mg kg(-1), Chemical speciation of arsenic showed that the arsenite (trivalent) components were 0.32-56% in the soil and 44.8% in the rock composite samples. Using a rat model, the absolute bioavailability of these contaminated soils relative to As3+ or As5+ ranged from 1.02 to 9.87% and 0.26 to 2.98%, respectively, An attempt was made to develop a suitable leachate test as an index of bioavailability. However, the results indicated that there was no significant correlation between the bioavailability and leachates using neutral pH water or 1 M HCl. Our results indicate that speciation is highly significant for the interpretation of bioavailability and risk assessment data; the bioavailable fractions of arsenic in soils from Watson are small and therefore the health impact upon the environment and humans due to this element is limited.

The tropical marine sponge Dysidea herbacea (Keller) contains the filamentous unicellular cyanobacterium Oscillatoria spongeliae (Schulze) Hauck as an endosymbiont, plus numerous bacteria, both intracellular and extracellular. Archaeocytes and choanocytes are the major sponge cell types present. Density gradient centrifugation of glutaraldehyde-fixed cells with Percoll as the support medium has been used to separate the cyanobacterial symbiont from the sponge cells on the basis of their differing densities. The protocol also has the advantage of separating broken from intact cells of O. spongeliae. The lighter cell preparations contain archaeocytes and choanocytes together with damaged cyanobacterial cells, whereas heavier cell preparations contain intact cyanobacterial cells, with less than 1% contamination by sponge cells. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis has revealed that the terpene spirodysin is concentrated in preparations containing archaeocytes and choanocytes, whereas nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of the symbiont cell preparations has shown that they usually contain the chlorinated diketopiperazines, dihydrodysamide C and didechlorodihydrodysamide C, which are the characteristic metabolites of the sponge/symbiont association. However, one symbiont preparation, partitioned by a second Percoll gradient, has been found to be devoid of chlorinated diketopiperazines. The capability to synthesize secondary metabolites may depend on the physiological state of the symbiont; alternatively, there may be two closely related cyanobacterial strains within the sponge tissue.

Previous studies have demonstrated that 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone (NIH) and several other aroylhydrazone chelators possess anti-neoplastic activity due to their ability to bind intracellular iron. In this study we have examined the structure and properties of NIH and its Fe-III complex in order to obtain further insight into its anti-tumour activity. Two tridentate NIH ligands deprotonate upon coordination to Fe-III in a meridional fashion to form a distorted octahedral, high-spin complex. Solution electrochemistry of [Fe(NIH-H)(2)](+) shows that the trivalent oxidation state is dominant over a wide potential range and that the Fe-II analogue is not a stable form of this complex. The fact that [Fe(NIH-H)(2)](+) cannot-cycle between the Fe-II and Fe-III states suggests that the production of toxic free- radical species, e.g. OH. or O2(.-),is not part of this ligand's cytotoxic action. This suggestion is supported by cell culture experiments demonstrating that the addition of Fe-III to NIH prevents its anti-proliferative effect. The chemistry of this chelator and its Fe-III complex are discussed in the context of understanding its anti-tumour activity.

Layered Double Hydroxides are a class of materials that can be described as positively charged layers of divalent and trivalent cations in the centre of edge-sharing octahedra. Cholesterol derivatives such as cholic acid are substances that play an important role in the digestion of fat components by the organism. This work presents a study on the intercalation of cholate anions in calcined MgAl-CO(3)-HDL. Isotherm experiments were performed at three different temperatures to evaluate the capacity of anion removal by sorption in the calcined LDH. The plateau was reached in all conditions. Increasing temperature results in decreasing cholate sorption. Characteristic peaks of LDH regenerated with OH(-) anions were observed at lower cholate concentrations. A peak in 2 theta equals to 7.5 degrees and peaks between 15 degrees and 20 degrees are observed. Those peaks are the same as the ones observed in the pure sodium cholate PXRD. At higher cholate concentrations the sorbed solids present PXRD related to an additional layered phase, which is related to intercalation of cholate anions with basal spacing equal to 34.3 angstrom. Thus, the cholate anions are also intercalated with a bilayer molecular arrangement at equilibrium concentrations at the isotherms plateau. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Layered Double Hydroxides are a class of materials that can be described as positively charged planar layers consisting of divalent and trivalent cations in the center of edge-sharing octahedra. The positive charge in the LDH layers must be compensated by anion intercalation. These materials have applications that include adsorption and/or sorption of anionic species. Cholic acid is one of the main acids produced by the liver. It promotes transport of lipids through aqueous systems. This work reports on the adsorption of Cholic acid anions in MgAl-CO3-LDH taking ionic strength, pH, and temperature effects into account. The adsorbent was characterized by different techniques. Cholate anion adsorption was performed at two different temperatures (298 and 323 K), two different ionic strength conditions (0.0 and 0.1 M of NaCl), and two different pH values (7.0 and 10.0). The results show that the sorption of Cholate anions in calcined LDH can remove a considerable amount of these anions from the medium. Cholate anion adsorption in the LDH with no calcining also occurs, but at a lower amount.

Background Despite the WHO recommendation that the 2010-2011 trivalent seasonal flu vaccine must contain A/California/7/2009/H1N1-like virus there is no consistent data regarding its immunogenicity and safety in a large autoimmune rheumatic disease (ARD) population. Methods 1668 ARD patients (systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), systemic sclerosis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), Behcet`s disease (BD), mixed connective tissue disease, primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS), dermatomyositis (DM), primary Sjogren`s syndrome, Takayasu`s arteritis, polymyositis and Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener`s) (GPA)) and 234 healthy controls were vaccinated with a non-adjuvanted influenza A/California/7/2009(H1N1) virus-like strain flu. Subjects were evaluated before vaccination and 21 days post-vaccination. The percentage of seroprotection, seroconversion and the factor increase in geometric mean titre (GMT) were calculated. Results After immunisation, seroprotection rates (68.5% vs 82.9% p < 0.0001), seroconversion rates (63.4% vs 76.9%, p < 0.001) and the factor increase in GMT (8.9 vs 13.2 p < 0.0001) were significantly lower in ARD than controls. Analysis of specific diseases revealed that seroprotection significantly reduced in SLE (p < 0.0001), RA (p < 0.0001), PsA (p=0.0006), AS (p=0.04), BD (p=0.04) and DM (p=0.04) patients than controls. The seroconversion rates in SLE (p < 0.0001), RA (p < 0.0001) and PsA (p=0.0006) patients and the increase in GMTs in SLE (p < 0.0001), RA (p < 0.0001) and PsA (p < 0.0001) patients were also reduced compared with controls. Moderate and severe side effects were not reported. Conclusions The novel recognition of a diverse vaccine immunogenicity profile in distinct ARDs supports the notion that a booster dose may be recommended for diseases with suboptimal immune responses. This large study also settles the issue of vaccine safety. (ClinicalTrials.gov #NCT01151644)

Fifty-four Large White gilts were used to determine the effect of body composition at selection (145 d of age) on the onset of puberty and subsequent reproductive development until 202 d of age. Gilts were assigned to one of three groups based on their backfat depth at selection: 10 to 12 mm (L), 13 to 15 mm (M), and 16 to 18 mm (F). All of the F gilts, 92% of the M gilts, and 67% of the L gilts reached puberty by slaughter at 202 d of age. Data from a subgroup (first 67% to reach puberty in each group; L = Lp, M = Mp, and F = Fp) was also used. The M (Mp) and F (Fp) gilts reached puberty at 172 d (166 d) and 170 d (166 d) of age, respectively, but the L (Lp) gilts at 184.5 d were 12 d (18 d) older than M(P < .05), Mp(P < .001), and F(P < .01), Fp (P < .001) gilts. The Lp (97.68 kg) and Mp (98.33 kg) gilts were lighter (P < .01) than Fp (108.72 kg) gilts at puberty. There were no differences (P < .05) among the L, M, and F gilts in terms of backfat depth or weight at puberty. The L (Lp) gilts had a mean of 1.16 (1.75) estrous cycles, which was lower (P < .01) than for M (Mp) and (P < .01) F (Fp) gilts, with 1.96 (2.29) and 2.25 (2.33) cycles, respectively. L (Lp) gilts had fewer (P < .05) follicles, 13.14 (12.63), than either M (Mp), 19.08 (18.71), or F (Fp), 18.25 (17.42) gilts. The number of corpora lutea was not influenced (P > .05) by grouping at selection, but Fp gilts had fewer (P < .05) corpora lutea than Mp or Fp gilts. Live weight at slaughter was not influenced (P > .10) by grouping at selection or subgrouping at puberty. The L gilts with a mean of 18.05 mm of backfat at slaughter were leaner (P < .05) than the F (21.66 mm) but not (P > .10) the M gilts (19.41 mm). Subgrouping had no effect. Fat deposition and protein deposition were higher (P < .05) in those animals that attained puberty. We conclude that the rate of fat and protein deposition seems to be one of the determinants of puberty attainment.

The type of surface used for running can influence the load that the locomotor apparatus will absorb and the load distribution could be related to the incidence of chronic injuries. As there is no consensus on how the locomotor apparatus adapts to loads originating from running Surfaces with different compliance, the objective of this study was to investigate how loads are distributed over the plantar surface while running on natural grass and on a rigid surface-asphalt. Forty-four adult runners with 4 3 years of running experience were evaluated while running at 12 km/h for 40 m wearing standardised running shoes and Pedar insoles (Novel). Peak pressure, contact time and contact area were measured in six regions: lateral, central and medial rearfoot, midfoot, lateral and media] forefoot. The Surfaces and regions were compared by three ANOVAS (2 x 6). Asphalt and natural grass were statistically different in all variables. Higher peak pressures were observed on asphalt at the central (p < 0.001) [grass: 303.8(66.7) kPa; asphalt: 342.3(76.3) kPa] and lateral rearfoot (p < 0.001) [grass: 312.7(75.8) kPa: asphalt: 350.9(98.3) kPa] and lateral forefoot (p < 0.001) [grass: 221.5(42.9) kPa asphalt: 245.3(55.5) kPa]. For natural grass, contact time and contact area were significantly greater at the central rearfoot (p < 0.001). These results suggest that natural grass may be a Surface that provokes lighter loads on the rearfoot and forefoot in recreational runners. (C) 2008 Sports Medicine Australia. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by the intramacrophage protozoa Leishmania spp. and may be fatal if left untreated. Although pentavalent antimonials are toxic and their mechanism of action is unclear, they remain the first-line drugs for treatment of leishmaniasis. An effective therapy could be achieved by delivering antileishmanial drugs to the site of infection. Compared with free drugs, antileishmanial agent-containing liposomes are more effective, less toxic and have fewer adverse side effects. The aim of this study was to develop novel meglumine antimoniate (MA)-containing liposome formulations and to analyse their antileishmanial activity and uptake by macrophages. Determination of the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) values showed that MA-containing liposomes were >= 10-fold more effective than the free drug, with a 5-fold increase in selectivity index, higher activity and reduced macrophage toxicity. The concentration required to kill 100% of intracellular amastigotes was >= 40-fold lower when MA was encapsulated in liposomes containing phosphatidylserine compared with the free drug. Fluorescence microscopy analysis revealed increased uptake of fluorescent liposomes in infected macrophages after short incubation times compared with non-infected macrophages. In conclusion, these data suggest that MA encapsulated in liposome formulations is more effective against Leishmania-infected macrophages than the non-liposomal drug. Development of liposome formulations is a valuable approach to the treatment of infectious diseases involving the mononuclear phagocyte system. The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro light activation of the nano-filled resin composite Vita shade A1 and A3 with a halogen lamp (QTH) and argon ion laser by Knoop microhardness profile. Materials and methods: Specimens of nanofilled composite resin (Z350-3 M-ESPE) Vita shade A1 and A3 were prepared with a single increment inserted in 2.0-mm-thick and 3-mm diameter disc-shaped Teflon mold. The light activation was performed with QTH for 20 s (with an intensity of approximately 1,000 mW/cm(2) and 700 mW/cm(2)) and argon ion laser for 10 s (with a power of 150 mW and 200 mW). Knoop microhardness test was performed after 24 h and 6 months. The specimens were divided into the 16 experimental groups (n = 10), according to the factors under study: photoactivation form, resin shade, and storage time. Knoop microhardness data was analyzed by a factorial ANOVA and TukeyA ` s tests at the 0.05 level of significance. Results: Argon ion laser was not able to photo-activate the darker shade of the nanofilled resin composite evaluated but when used with 200 mW it can be as effective as QTH to photo-activate the lighter shade with only 50% of the time exposure. After 6 months storage, an increase in the means of Knoop microhardness values were observed. Conclusions: Light-activation significantly influenced the Knoop microhardness values for the darker nanofilled resin composite.

This study describes the developmental changes in pulmonary surfactant (PS) lipids throughout incubation in the sea turtle, Chelonia mydas. Total phospholipid (PL), disaturated phospholipid (DSP) and cholesterol (Chol) harvested from lung washings increased with advancing incubation, where secretion was maximal at pipping, coincident with the onset of pulmonary ventilation. The DSP/PL ratio increased, whereas the Chol/PL and the Chol/DSP ratio declined throughout development. The phospholipids, therefore, are independently regulated from Chol and their development matches that of mammals. To explore whether hypoxia could elicit an effect on the development of the PS system, embryos were exposed to a chronic dose of 17% O-2 for the final similar to 40% of incubation. Hypoxia did not affect incubation time, absolute, nor relative abundance of the surfactant lipids, demonstrating that the development of the system is robust and that embryonic development continues unabated under mild hypoxia. Hypoxia-incubated hatchlings had lighter wet lung weights than those from normoxia, inferring that mild hypoxia facilitates lung clearance in this species. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Male kids (110) from six goat genotypes, i.e. Boer x Angora (BA), Boer x Feral (1317), Boer x Saanen (BS), Feral x Feral (FF), Saanen x Angora (SA) and Saanen x Feral (SF) and two slaughter weight groups, i.e. Capretto and Chevon (liveweight at slaughter 14-22 and 30-35 kg, respectively) were compared for growth, carcass and meat quality characteristics. Due to their better growth rate, kids from BS and SF genotypes reached the required liveweight for slaughter earlier than kids from other Genotypes used in the study. Chevon kids had a significantly (P < 0.05) lower average daily gain (119 g per day) compared to Capretto kids (171 g per day). SA, SF and FF kids deposited more internal fat in comparison to kids from other genotypes. The dressing percentage of kids ranged from 51 to 54%, with significant differences between genotypes. BS and SF kids had longer carcasses. while BF kids had larger eye muscle area compared to other genotypes. Goat carcasses had a thin subcutaneous fat cover (1.6-2.2 mm). Genotype had a significant (P < 0.05) influence on cooking loss, pigment concentration and muscle colour parameters (CIE L*, a* and b* values). As denoted by the higher V and fibre optic probe values and lower subjective muscle score, the longissimus muscle colour was lighter for BS kids than other genotypes. Cooked meat from the BF kids had lower shear force values and better sensory scores compared to other genotypes. A significant (P < 0.05) decrease in muscle tenderness was observed from Capretto to Chevon carcasses, whereas cooked meat from these two slaughter weight groups was equally accepted (P > 0.05) by the panellists.
