We propose an ISA extension that decouples the data access and register write operations in a load instruction. We describe system and hardware support for decoupled loads. Furthermore, we show how compilers can generate better static instruction schedules by hoisting a decoupled load’s data access above may-alias stores and branches. We find that decoupled loads improve performance with geometric mean speedups of 8.4%.

Since the implementation of the Programa Conectar Igualdad (PCI) (Connecting Equality Program) in 2010 in Argentina, numerous Social Science specialists started to research how massive ICT introduction in schools would radically affect teaching and learning processes, knowledge building and youth behaviour. Nevertheless, there is still not much empirical evidence showing the ways in which these technologies are appropriated. This situation discloses the need of placing research questions locally situated with regard to those potential changes. What existing access methods does PCI encounter? And how does its implementation participate in the design of personal and family heterogeneous trajectories of ICTs appropriation? How do the students themselves perceive the infl uence of PCI on their own technologic abilities and competence? How do knowledge and aptitudes associated to new digital media articulate with the knowledge manners promoted by the school format and institutionalism? How does the massive introduction of netbooks affect the interaction among different school actors (students-teachers)? What happens in other sociability and socialization spaces, such as the house and cybercafé?

El objetivo del documento es identificar dos posibles canales que expliquen por qué el programa OLPC en el Perú no generó efectos significativos en el rendimiento de los niños. Para ello se estimará el efecto de la introducción de tecnología (en este caso, laptops) sobre dos potenciales canales: el método de enseñanza del profesor y el tiempo destinado a actividades dentro del hogar. En primer lugar se espera que la entrega de laptops haya reducido la probabilidad que el alumno reciba un método centrado en el alumno donde se promueven las actividades cooperativas. A pesar de que este tipo de método genera un impacto positivo en el rendimiento del alumno. En segundo lugar, se espera que la entrega de laptops haya reducido el tiempo destinado a quehaceres domésticos, cuando estos inciden negativamente el rendimiento de los alumnos. A través de una estimación de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios en dos etapas y bajo una regresión simple se encuentra que la entrega exógena de laptops reduce la probabilidad del profesor de implementar un método centrado en el alumno con actividades cooperativas entre 10 y 8 puntos porcentuales para los cursos de lenguaje y matemáticas respectivamente. Para lenguaje; ello incide en el rendimiento, ya que este método genera un efecto positivo y significativo en el rendimiento de 0.025 desviaciones estándar. Mientras que, para matemáticas, el método no tiene efecto alguno en el rendimiento académico.

Mit den Reformen der Lehrerbildung war seit Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts die Umsetzung eines stärkeren Berufsfeldbezugs im Lehramtsstudium verbunden. Niederschlag fand dies u.a. in einer Ausweitung von Schulpraktika in den Studiengängen in Deutschland. Erste Erfahrungen in der praktischen schulpädagogischen Arbeit sollten dabei möglich werden und an der Hochschule erworbenes wissenschaftliches Wissen und Können einen ersten reflexiven Anwendungsbezug erhalten. [...] In explorativer Absicht wird vor diesem Hintergrund im Folgenden eine Protokollsequenz untersucht, in der eine Lehrerin, eine Praktikantin und Schüler in einer Unterrichtsstunde interagieren. Bestimmend für die Auswahl war die Tatsache, dass hier die Praktikantin an der Disziplinierung der Schüler beteiligt wird - was nach langjähriger Erfahrung des Autors nicht selten vorkommt. Os sistemas biológicos são surpreendentemente flexíveis pra processar informação proveniente do mundo real. Alguns organismos biológicos possuem uma unidade central de processamento denominada de cérebro. O cérebro humano consiste de 10(11) neurônios e realiza processamento inteligente de forma exata e subjetiva. A Inteligência Artificial (IA) tenta trazer para o mundo da computação digital a heurística dos sistemas biológicos de várias maneiras, mas, ainda resta muito para que isso seja concretizado. No entanto, algumas técnicas como Redes neurais artificiais e lógica fuzzy tem mostrado efetivas para resolver problemas complexos usando a heurística dos sistemas biológicos. Recentemente o numero de aplicação dos métodos da IA em sistemas zootécnicos tem aumentado significativamente. O objetivo deste artigo é explicar os princípios básicos da resolução de problemas usando heurística e demonstrar como a IA pode ser aplicada para construir um sistema especialista para resolver problemas na área de zootecnia.

Measured and calculated differential cross sections for elastic (rotationally unresolved) electron scattering from two primary alcohols, methanol (CH(3)OH) and ethanol (C(2)H(5)OH), are reported. The measurements are obtained using the relative flow method with helium as the standard gas and a thin aperture as the collimating target gas source. The relative flow method is applied without the restriction imposed by the relative flow pressure conditions on helium and the unknown gas. The experimental data were taken at incident electron energies of 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV and for scattering angles of 5 degrees-130 degrees. There are no previous reports of experimental electron scattering differential cross sections for CH(3)OH and C(2)H(5)OH in the literature. The calculated differential cross sections are obtained using two different implementations of the Schwinger multichannel method, one that takes all electrons into account and is adapted for parallel computers, and another that uses pseudopotentials and considers only the valence electrons. Comparison between theory and experiment shows that theory is able to describe low-energy electron scattering from these polyatomic targets quite well.

This paper presents a framework to build medical training applications by using virtual reality and a tool that helps the class instantiation of this framework. The main purpose is to make easier the building of virtual reality applications in the medical training area, considering systems to simulate biopsy exams and make available deformation, collision detection, and stereoscopy functionalities. The instantiation of the classes allows quick implementation of the tools for such a purpose, thus reducing errors and offering low cost due to the use of open source tools. Using the instantiation tool, the process of building applications is fast and easy. Therefore, computer programmers can obtain an initial application and adapt it to their needs. This tool allows the user to include, delete, and edit parameters in the functionalities chosen as well as storing these parameters for future use. In order to verify the efficiency of the framework, some case studies are presented.

The goal of this paper is to study and propose a new technique for noise reduction used during the reconstruction of speech signals, particularly for biomedical applications. The proposed method is based on Kalman filtering in the time domain combined with spectral subtraction. Comparison with discrete Kalman filter in the frequency domain shows better performance of the proposed technique. The performance is evaluated by using the segmental signal-to-noise ratio and the Itakura-Saito`s distance. Results have shown that Kalman`s filter in time combined with spectral subtraction is more robust and efficient, improving the Itakura-Saito`s distance by up to four times. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The purpose of this paper is to propose a multiobjective optimization approach for solving the manufacturing cell formation problem, explicitly considering the performance of this said manufacturing system. Cells are formed so as to simultaneously minimize three conflicting objectives, namely, the level of the work-in-process, the intercell moves and the total machinery investment. A genetic algorithm performs a search in the design space, in order to approximate to the Pareto optimal set. The values of the objectives for each candidate solution in a population are assigned by running a discrete-event simulation, in which the model is automatically generated according to the number of machines and their distribution among cells implied by a particular solution. The potential of this approach is evaluated via its application to an illustrative example, and a case from the relevant literature. The obtained results are analyzed and reviewed. Therefore, it is concluded that this approach is capable of generating a set of alternative manufacturing cell configurations considering the optimization of multiple performance measures, greatly improving the decision making process involved in planning and designing cellular systems.
