Site 1146 (19°27.40'N, 116°16.37'E) was drilled in ~2092 m water depth in a rift basin on the continental slope of the South China Sea. A total of 607 m of sediment was cored in Hole 1146A, and a composite section from three holes extends down to 640 meters composite depth (mcd). Three stratigraphic sedimentary units were recognized at this site: late Pliocene to Pleistocene nannofossil clay (Unit I), middle Miocene to late Pliocene foraminifer and nannofossil clay mixed sediment (Unit II), and early to middle Miocene nannofossil clay (Unit III). This study reports the mineralogy from the late Miocene through early Pleistocene, 150-440 mcd.

Investigations at a Late Weichselian freshwater basin in northwestern Jutland, Denmark, yielded a fairly rich assemblage of vertebrate remains, mostly bones and teeth of small mammals. The remains are primarily allochthonous and the bones have been subjected to different taphonomic pathways and agents. AMS 14C-dates on terrestrial organic remains provided ages of Middle to Late Allerød time. Identifications revealed the first fossil record in Scandinavia of Rana arvalis, Sorex minutus, Ochotona cf. pusilla, Microtus gregalis, Microtus oeconomus, and Sicista cf. betulinu. Spermophilus cf. major and Desmana moschata, previously found only once and twice respectively, were retrieved, and Sorex araneus and Arvicola terrestris were recovered for the first time beyond the Atlantic chronozone. Ecologically, the Nørre Lyngby small mammal fauna can be characterized by its very high and almost equal proportions of boreal forest and steppe elements followed by a relatively high proportion of tundra elements. The fossil species share a modern area of sympatry north of the Caspian Sea from the river Volga in the west to the southern and western slopes of the Urals. If, however, the large Allerød mammals are added, the fauna is without modern analogues. The Nørre Lyngby fauna can be seen as a last expansion of the North European glacial fauna. Provided that an absolute chronology and a differentiated sea-level curve for the area can be established, the Nørre Lyngby fauna could become important for studies in mammalian dispersal and migration rates.

Four seismic surveys and a stratigraphic record from southernmost Patagonia (Argentina) based on 51 AMS-14C dates obtained in the framework of ICDP expedition 5022 "Potrok Aike Maar Lake Sediment Archive Drilling Project" (PASADO) provide a database to compare the 106 m composite profile from the lake centre with piston cores from the littoral and outcrops in the catchment area. Based on event correlation using distinct volcanic ash layers with unique geochemical composition and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates on feldspars, sediment records are firmly linked. This approach allows to match the sediment record with water levels during the past ca. 49 ka providing evidence for lake level variations. Reconstructed lake levels were 20 m higher than today during the last Glacial until the early Holocene. With the migration of the Southern Hemispheric Westerlies over this site the lake level dropped ca. 55 m for a period of two millennia. Thereupon the water balance was more positive again causing a stepwise rise of the lake level until the maximum was reached during the Little Ice Age with a subsequent lowering since the 20th century. We suggest that the mid- to late-Holocene lake level variation is caused by intensity changes of the Southern Hemispheric Westerlies.

Three bottom sediment cores were collected from the top, slope, and foot of a small topographic high located near the West European continental rise within the Porcupine abyssal plain at the battleship Bismark wreck site. Using high-efficient gas chromatography technique we determined content and examined molecular composition of n-alkane fraction of hydrocarbons and phenol compounds of lignin. n-Alkane and phenol concentrations in bottom sediments of all three cores were low both in values per unit mass of sediments and in organic matter composition that is typical for pelagic deposits of the World Ocean. They vary from 0.07 to 2.01 µg/g of dry sediment and from 0.0001 to 0.01% of TOC; phenol ranges are from 1.43 to 11.1 µg/g and from 0.03 to 0.6%. Non-uniform supply of terrigenous matter to the bottom under conditions of changes in sedimentation environment in different geological epochs is the principal reason for significant variations in n-alkane and lignin concentrations with depth in the cores. Lignin and its derivatives make the main contribution to formation of organic matter composition of the region in study. With respect to n-alkane and lignin concentrations organic matter of deposits of the West European Basin is composed of remains of higher plants and of autochtonous organic matter of marine flora; they have mixed terrigenous-autochtonous (terrigenous-planktonogenic) origin.

This report presents mineralogic and geochemical data from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 182 Site 1128 in the Great Australian Bight. Clay mineralogy is dominated by mixed-layer illite-smectite, followed by minor amounts of kaolinite and illite, with intervals of pure smectite. Carbonate mineralogy is exclusively low-Mg calcite, except for one interval of dolomite in lower Oligocene sediments. Carbonate increases significantly in upper Eocene sediments, decreases through the lower Oligocene, then increases again in the Neogene. Quartz is present as a minor component that covaries inversely with carbonate. High-resolution sampling associated with Chron 13 normal (early Oligocene) reveals high-frequency (~23 k.y.) fluctuations in clay mineralogy and carbonate abundance and a positive oxygen and carbon isotope excursion (in bulk carbonates) related to Antarctic glaciation.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188 to Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, several of the shipboard scientists formed the High-Resolution Integrated Stratigraphy Committee (HiRISC). The committee was established in order to furnish an integrated data set from the Pliocene portion of Site 1165 as a contribution to the ongoing debate about Pliocene climate and climate evolution in Antarctica. The proxies determined in our various laboratories were the following: magnetostratigraphy and magnetic properties, grain-size distributions (granulometry), near-ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectrophotometry, calcium carbonate content, characteristics of foraminifer, diatom, and radiolarian content, clay mineral composition, and stable isotopes. In addition to the HiRISC samples, other data sets contained in this report are subsets of much larger data sets. We included these subsets in order to provide the reader with a convenient integrated data set of Pliocene-Pleistocene strata from the East Antarctic continental margin. The data are presented in the form of 14 graphs (in addition to the site map). Text and figure captions guide the reader to the original data sets. Some preliminary interpretations are given at the end of the manuscript.

Palaeoclimatic and paleoenvironmental high latitude records in the Southern Hemisphere are scarce compared to the northern counterpart. However, understanding global evolution of environmental systems during sudden climate changes is inseparable from an equivalent knowledge of both Hemispheres. In this context, a high-resolution study of lacustrine sediments from Laguna Potrok Aike, Santa Cruz province, Patagonia, Argentina, was conducted for the Lateglacial period using concurrent X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning electron microscope analyses. Peaks of Ca/Si and Mn, and occurrences of the green alga Phacotus lenticularis have been interpreted as variations in ventilation of the water column from 13.6 to 11.1 ka cal. BP. During this interval, mild climate conditions during the Younger Dryas are characterized by relatively weak westerlies favouring the formation of a stratified water body as indicated by preserved manganese and Ca/Si peaks and high Total Organic Carbon (TOC) values. In this environment, water in the epilimnion can reach sufficiently high temperature to allow P. lenticularis to grow. Colder conditions are marked by peaks in Ca without P. lenticularis and occur during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). In this Lateglacial interval, micropumices were also detected in large amount. Image analysis of thin sections allowed the counting and size measurement of detrital particles and micropumices separately. Micropumices significantly influence the iron and titanium content, hence preventing to use them as proxies of detrital input in this interval.

A geochemical analysis is conducted on hemipelagic sediments at ODP Leg 162, Site 907, North Atlantic. On the basis of major and minor element concentrations, the sequence is divided into five units. Geochemical data reveal that the sediments originated from two specific source areas, i.e., continental icerafted debris (IRD) and Icelandic basalt. In the upper part (lithological units I and II, 0 to 63.1 meters below sea floor (mbsf)), sediments were derived from continental IRD, whereas in the lower part, sediments (lithological units III, IV, and V, below 63.1 mbsf) comprise mixture of continental IRD and minor supply from the Icelandic basalt. The ratio of TiO2/Al2O3 to SiO2 content and the Th to Ti/Al molar ratio clearly provide a key to discriminate provenances. The change in source area is most likely related to the oceanographic and climatic evolution in the North Atlantic since the middle Miocene. Biogenic fossil-barren intervals (Units II and V) are considered as a consequence of dissolution caused by oceanic circulation. The timing of IRD initiation confers with that of geochemical analysis. Total organic carbon to total nitrogen (C/N) ratio shows a striking variation in the entire core. The C/N ratios exceed 10 below approximately 196 mbsf (lithological unit V) with a gradual downward increase. This suggests that terrigenous organic matters have been supplied from the neighboring continents. The total organic carbon to total sulfur (C/S) ratio also shows such possibility as well as diagenetic changes in Units IV and V. The carbonate-barren intervals presented in Units II and V, and intermittently in Units III and IV are interpreted as a consequence of dissolution effect related with climatic variation and deep-water circulation. Additional low surface productivity was considerable.
