Cloud Computing enables provisioning and distribution of highly scalable services in a reliable, on-demand and sustainable manner. However, objectives of managing enterprise distributed applications in cloud environments under Service Level Agreement (SLA) constraints lead to challenges for maintaining optimal resource control. Furthermore, conflicting objectives in management of cloud infrastructure and distributed applications might lead to violations of SLAs and inefficient use of hardware and software resources. This dissertation focusses on how SLAs can be used as an input to the cloud management system, increasing the efficiency of allocating resources, as well as that of infrastructure scaling. First, we present an extended SLA semantic model for modelling complex service-dependencies in distributed applications, and for enabling automated cloud infrastructure management operations. Second, we describe a multi-objective VM allocation algorithm for optimised resource allocation in infrastructure clouds. Third, we describe a method of discovering relations between the performance indicators of services belonging to distributed applications and then using these relations for building scaling rules that a CMS can use for automated management of VMs. Fourth, we introduce two novel VM-scaling algorithms, which optimally scale systems composed of VMs, based on given SLA performance constraints. All presented research works were implemented and tested using enterprise distributed applications.

Water is a vital resource, but also a critical limiting factor for economic and social development in many parts of the world. The recent rapid growth in human population and water use for social and economic development is increasing the pressure on water resources and the environment, as well as leading to growing conflicts among competing water use sectors (agriculture, urban, tourism, industry) and regions (Gleick et al., 2009; World Bank, 2006). In Spain, as in many other arid and semi-arid regions affected by drought and wide climate variability, irrigated agriculture is responsible for most consumptive water use and plays an important role in sustaining rural livelihoods (Varela-Ortega, 2007). Historically, the evolution of irrigation has been based on publicly-funded irrigation development plans that promoted economic growth and improved the socio-economic conditions of rural farmers in agrarian Spain, but increased environmental damage and led to excessive and inefficient exploitation of water resources (Garrido and Llamas, 2010; Varela-Ortega et al., 2010). Currently, water policies in Spain focus on rehabilitating and improving the efficiency of irrigation systems, and are moving from technocratic towards integrated water management strategies driven by the European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Abstract. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824), is considered one of the most harmful pests in fruit crops. Until 2009, when malathion use was banned due to its not inclusion in the Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC, the application of this organophosphate (OP) insecticide in Spain increased gradually due to the large economic losses caused by C. capitata. The increase in the frequency of treatments resulted in the development of resistant field populations. The study of a malathion-resistant population, collected in 2004 in Castelló (Comunidad Valenciana), allowed the identification of two resistance mechanisms: a single point mutation (G328A) in the target acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as a metabolic resistance mechanism, most likely carboxylesterase-mediated. Taking all the preceding into account, we studied the malathion resistance mechanisms in C. capitata. During the development of this PhD Thesis malathion use was banned by the European Union, being replaced by other insecticides, such as spinosad and lambda-cyhalotrin. Within this new working frame, the need to analyse the possible existence of cross-resistance to these insecticides and the susceptibility to spinosad in field populations was raised. This would define the baseline for future studies on resistance mechanisms. Firstly, through discriminant dose bioassays, we analysed malathion and spinosad susceptibility in twelve C. capitata populations from Andalucia, Aragon, Cataluña, C. Valenciana and the Baleares Islands. Our results suggest the presence of malathion-resistant individuals in most of the populations analysed. Regarding spinosad, we noticed a high susceptibility to this biologically derived insecticide in most of the populations, but in the one collected in Xabia (Alicante), which had a susceptibility level two times lower than the rest of populations. Through laboratory selection, we obtained two malathion-resistant strains, W-4Km and W-10Km, with resistance levels 178- and 400-fold, respectively, compared to the control susceptible C strain. Besides, a strain highly-resistant to spinosad (Xabia-W-100s), 500-times more resistant than control C strain, was selected. In order to decide the most appropriate management strategy for the pest, we studied the susceptibility to different insecticides in the malathion-resistant W-4Km strain. We detected a moderated cross-resistance to the OPs fenthion, diazinon, phosmet, trichlorphon and methylchlorpyrifos (7- to 16-fold), and to the carbamate carbaryl, the pyretroid lambda-cyhalotrin and the chemosterilizer lufenuron (4- to 6-fold). On the other hand, cross-resistance to spinosad was low (1.5-fold). It is important to note that resistance levels to all insecticides were one or two orders of magnitude less than that observed against malathion in W-4Km strain (178-fold), a fact that might be due to, at least, two possible causes: mutation AChE G328A may provide a higher insensitivity to malaoxon (the active form of malathion) than to other insecticides having AChE as target, and/or, secondly, the carboxylesterase-mediated resistance mechanism hydrolyzes malathion more efficiently than all other analysed insecticides. To investigate new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata we analysed the diversity of the cytochrome P450 enzymes, which have been associated to metabolic resistance in insects, and we developed a new method to detect single point mutations in acetylcholinesterase (Ccace2) and aliesterase (Ccae7) genes that could appear. Using degenerate primers we obtained 37 CYP genes, coding P450 enzymes, included in five families. Afterwards, in a phenobarbital-induction study, we observed that the expression of 4 out of the 6 analysed genes could be induced. On the other hand, a system was set up to amplify and to sequence from genomic DNA the exons of genes Ccace2 and Ccae7 where mutations related to insecticide resistance have been found in other species. The results obtained could facilitate the study of new resistance mechanisms in C. capitata mediated by these enzymes. A PCR-RFLP method was designed to detect the presence of the mutation AChE G328A (resistance allele Ccace2R), with no need to perform bioassays and allowing detecting resistance at low frequency. According to the analysis, the resistance allele was found in 25 out of 27 sampled locations in Spain, including the Balearic and the Canary Islands. However, this allele was not detected in other populations collected in 11 countries from 5 continents. The follow-up of the presence of the allele Ccace2R in the malathion-resistant strains during the selection process in the laboratory showed a quick decrease in homozygous individuals, for both the susceptible and the resistant alleles, favouring heterozygous. Thus, after 52 generations of selection, all the individuals analysed from W-10Km strain showed a heterozygous genotype for mutation AChE G328A, contradicting mendelian segregation as expected for a gene with two alleles. Afterwards, we were able to demonstrate that this was caused by the presence of a duplication of the gene coding acetylcholinesterase by: i) crossing heterozygous individuals from W-10Km strain with susceptible homozygous from C strain, originating a F1 population in which 100% of individuals were heterozygous; ii) evaluating the number of copies of gen Ccace2 by quantitative PCR in real time (qPCR), that happened to be twice higher in individuals from W-10Km VII strain when compared with C strain; iii) analysing the level of expression of Ccace2, twice in W- 10Km strain when compared to C strain; iv) studying the acetylcholinesterase activity, that was higher in individuals from W-10Km strain. According to these results, duplication of gen Ccace2 originates the coexistence of the susceptible and the resistant allele in the same chromosome. The two linked copies of the gene Ccace2 provoke the existence of permanent heterozygosis (Ccace2RS). This explains why the 100% of individuals from W-10Km strain showed an heterozygous restriction pattern since, in fact, they were structural homozygotes for the duplication (genotype Ccace2RS/RS). A biological cost has been detected associated to this duplication, consisting in a rise in accumulated adult mortality from the seventh day after emergence. The Ccace2RS duplication described in this study represents a new resistance mechanism to malathion in C. capitata. Finally, by the design of a double PCR-RFLP method, the presence of Ccace2RS duplication was confirmed in most of the Spanish populations. We observed that the proportion of individuals carrying the duplication oscillated between 5 and 35%, the frequency being higher in those C. capitata populations collected in the area of the Mediterranean basin. Therefore, we can conclude that malathion resistance associated to mutation AChE G328A and to Ccace2RS duplication are widely distributed in Spanish populations of C. capitata. Our results advice against the use of malathion (if it came to be newly authorized for use) or other OPs for the control of this pest. Besides, one of the malathion-resistant strains showed cross-resistance against insecticides with diverse action modes that are currently used for pest control, such as lambdacyhalotrin and lufenuron. High susceptibility to spinosad in the Spanish populations, as well as the reduced cross-resistance estimated for this insecticide suggests its adequacy for Medfly control. However, the use of a single insecticide is a risky strategy since it favours the selection of resistance. In fact, a population highly resistant to spinosad was obtained through laboratory selection. Therefore, it is advisable to implement integrated pest management (IPM) and resistance management programs for C. capitata control. Using insecticides with different modes of action and diverse control systems would contribute to the sustainability of the pest control. The resistance allele detection systems developed through this work will allow the early detection of resistance in the field, making possible the selection of the most appropriate method for pest control. Besides, the generated knowledge may also contribute to the development of new detection systems for other resistance mechanisms.

In a context of rapid urbanization and global climate change, coping with sustainable development challenges requires the development of sustainable cities. Based on an intensive soil permeability reduction, the current development model deeply modifies the natural water cycle in the urban environment. Reduction of soil infiltration capacity turns most of the rainwater into surface runoff, rapidly leading to heavy peak flows which are highly contaminated due to the flushing of the urban surface. This is the central motivation for this thesis, which aspires to contribute to the attainment of more sustainable cities through an integrated management of rainwater in urban environments. With the main objective of minimizing floods, the conventional approach of drainage systems focused on peak flows, centralizing their management on the sewage system and incorporating flows as fast as possible. But during heavy rains the hydraulic and contamination overcharge of the sewage system leads to an increase in the vulnerability of the population, in regards to floods and lack of public health, as well as to severe impacts in receiving waters. In 1987, the United States’Clean Water Act Declaration, which firstly recognized the problem of runoff contamination, was the starting point of a new approach that promotes a set of techniques known as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)that integrates issues such as quantity of water, quality of water and service to society. SUDS are considered the most suitable set of techniques to manage the risks resulting from urban runoff, as well as to contribute to the environmental enhancement of urban basins and of the aquatic ecosystems. International experience points out that the effective adoption of SUDS as usual systems in urban development must be based on three key elements: The enhancement of the legal frame, the application of economic tools and the active public participation throughout the process. Additionally, one of the strategic actions to advance in the resolution of the problem is the development and application of methodologies based in measurable indicators that support the decision making process. In that line, this thesis defines a set of sustainability indicators focused in integrated management of rainwater. To that end, the present document applies the analytical frame Pressure – State – Response under an approach that goes beyond the sewage system and considers the multiple and complex interrelations within urban systems. Thus, for the three basic elements that interact in the issue (Receiving Water Bodies – Urban Basin – Sewage System) a set of Pressure – State – Response indicators are proposed, and the specific aim, the measurement unit, the desired evolution trend and the regularity of monitoring are defined for each of the indicators. The application of the proposed indicators to the case study of the city of Zaragoza acknowledged their suitability for the definition of lines of action that encompass not only the enhancement of the performance of sewage and drainage systems during rain events, but also the legal, urban, economic, social and environmental framework. Finally, this thesis concludes that the inclusion of urban rainwater management issues in the definition of regional planning policies, the development of mechanisms to attain an effective institutional coordination, the enhancement of the legal framework and the application of economic tools are key elements in order to achieve an integrated rainwater management and the subsequent sustainability of urban development in Spain.

The more and more demanding conditions in the power generation sector requires to apply all the available technologies to optimize processes and reduce costs. An integrated asset management strategy, combining technical analysis and operation and maintenance management can help to improve plant performance, flexibility and reliability. In order to deploy such a model it is necessary to combine plant data and specific equipment condition information, with different systems devoted to analyze performance and equipment condition, and take advantage of the results to support operation and maintenance decisions. This model that has been dealt in certain detail for electricity transmission and distribution networks, is not yet broadly extended in the power generation sector, as proposed in this study for the case of a combined power plant. Its application would turn in direct benefit for the operation and maintenance and for the interaction to the energy market

As sustainability reporting (SR) practices have being increasingly adopted by corporations over the last twenty years, most of the existing literature on SR has stressed the role of external determinants (such as institutional and stakeholder pressures) in explaining this uptake. However, given that recent evidence points to a broader range of motives and uses (both external and internal) of SR, we contend that its role within company-level activities deserves greater academic attention. In order to address this research gap, this paper seeks to provide a more detailed examination of the organizational characteristics acting as drivers and/or barriers of SR integration within corporate sustainability practices at the company-level. More specifically, we suggest that substantive SR implementation can be predicted by assessing the level of fit between the organization and the SR framework being adopted. Building on this hypothesis, our theoretical model defines three forms of fit (technical, cultural and political) and identifies organizational characteristics associated to each of these fits. Finally, implications for academic research, businesses and policy-makers are derived.

Weed control in recreation areas is a complex public land management issue. Colorado State Parks are managed for both recreation and conservation, which often conflict. Noxious weeds affect both recreation and conservation efforts, and Parks often use herbicides to control these weeds. While herbicides are effective, they can be harmful to the environment and human health. Herbicide use at State Parks was reviewed to determine if chemical control is effective, safe, and efficient. The results revealed that many Parks are not using effective herbicides to treat noxious weeds and that some weed management plans lack pertinent information on chemical control. The results and recommendations provided can be used to improve the success of noxious weed control and create healthier Parks.

The polyphagous moth Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) is one of the world's most important agricultural pests. A number of existing approaches and future designs for management of H. armigera rely on the assumption that moths do not exhibit either genetically and/or non-genetically based variation for host plant utilization. We review recent empirical evidence demonstrating that both these forms of variation influence host plant use in this moth. The significance of this variation in H. armigera in relation to current and future pest management strategies is examined. We provide recommendations on future research needs and directions for sustainable management of H. armigera, under a framework that includes consideration of intra.-specific variation for host use relevant in this and other similar pest species. Maximizing the contribution of endemic natural enemies to integrated pest management (IPM) programs requires a detailed knowledge of their interactions with the target pest. This experimental field study evaluated the impact of the endemic natural enemy complex of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) on pest populations in commercial cabbage crops in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Management data were used to score pest management practices at experimental sites on independent Brassica farms practicing a range of pest management strategies, and mechanical methods of natural enemy exclusion were used to assess the impact of natural enemies on introduced cohorts of P. xylostella at each site. Natural enemy impact was greatest at sites adopting IPM and least at sites practicing conventional pest management strategies. At IPM sites, the contribution of natural enemies to P. xylostella mortality permitted the cultivation of marketable crops with no yield loss but with a substantial reduction in insecticide inputs. Three species of larval parasitoids (Diadegma semiclausum Hellen [Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae], Apanteles ippeus Nixon [Hymenoptera: Braconidae], and Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov [Hymenoptera: Eulophidae]) and one species of pupal parasitoid Diadromus collaris Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) attacked immature P. xylostella. The most abundant groups of predatory arthropods caught in pitfall traps were Araneae (Lycosidae) > Coleoptera (Carabidae, Coccinelidae, Staphylinidae) > Neuroptera (Chrysopidae) > Formicidae, whereas on crop foliage Araneae (Clubionidae, Oxyopidae) > Coleoptera (Coccinelidae) > Neuroptera (Chrysopidae) were most common. The abundance and diversity of natural enemies was greatest at sites that adopted IPM, correlating greater P. xylostella mortality at these sites. The efficacy of the natural enemy complex to pest mortality under different pest management regimes and appropriate strategies to optimize this important natural resource are discussed.

Australian freshwater fish species Melanotaenia duboulayi and Hypseleotris galii were selected for a small plot field evaluation of an integrated pest management strategy using native fish and VectoLex® WG (Bacillus sphaericus) for the control of Culex annulirostris Skuse, the principal freshwater vector of arbovirus Ross River virus in Australia. When tested alone, the level of control afforded by M. duboulayi and H. galii was highly dependent on the prerelease density of mosquito larvae; and even when stocking rates as high as 10 g per pond (>30 kg/ha) were used, larval abundance was too high to attain adequate control from fish alone. In contrast, treatment with VectoLex WG at 500 g/ha resulted in 100% mortality of Cx. annulirostris immatures, but no residual activity was evident. The delayed reduction of Cx. annulirostris immatures in ponds stocked with fish alone, and the recolonization by Cx. annulirostris in ponds after treatment with B. sphaericus, did not occur when both treatments were combined.

With the accelerating industrialization process, even further increasing population and mass deforestation, ‘sustainability’ as a concept has only recently been popularized in Bangladesh. This paper sheds light on the sustainable development process in Bangladesh. It points out the major challenges to this process and identifies the motivating factors for a sustainable society in Bangladesh. The paper concludes with some strategies that are considered essential for the development of a sustainable society in Bangladesh, e.g., strong and effective regulatory framework, emphasis on rural entrepreneurship, development of indigenous technology and an integrated environmental management system.

This paper proposes a more profound discussion of the philosophical underpins of sustainability than currently exists in the MOT literature and considers their influence on the construction of the theories on green operations and technology management. Ultimately, it also debates the link between theory and practice on this subject area. The paper is derived from insights gained in three research projects completed during the past twelve years, primarily involving the first author. From 2000 to 2002, an investigation using scenario analysis, aimed at reducing atmospheric pollution in urban centres by substituting natural gas for petrol and diesel, provided the first set of insights about public policy, environmental impacts, investment analysis, and technological feasibility. The second research project, from 2003 to 2005, using a survey questionnaire, was aimed at improving environmental performance in livestock farming and explored the issues of green supply chain scope, environmental strategy and priorities. Finally, the third project, from 2006 to 2011, investigated environmental decisions in manufacturing organisations through case study research and examined the underlying sustainability drivers and decision-making processes. By integrating the findings and conclusions from these projects, the link between philosophy, theory, and practice of green operations and technology management is debated. The findings from all these studies show that the philosophical debate seems to have little influence on theory building so far. For instance, although ‘sustainable development’ emphasises ‘meeting the needs of current and future generation’, no theory links essentiality and environmental impacts. Likewise, there is a weak link between theory and the practical issues of green operations and technology management. For example, the well-known ‘life-cycle analysis’ has little application in many cases because the life cycle of products these days is dispersed within global production and consumption systems and there are different stakeholders for each life cycle stage. The results from this paper are relevant to public policy making and corporate environmental strategy and decision making. Most of the past and current studies in the subject of green operations and sustainability management deal with only a single sustainability dimension at any one time. Here the value and originality of this paper lies in its integration between philosophy, theory, and practice of green technology and operations management.

The maintenance of species richness is often a priority in the management of nature reserves, where consumptive use of resources is generally prohibited. The purpose of this research was to improve management by understanding the vegetation dynamics in the lowlands of Nepal. The objectives were to determine vegetation associations in relation to environments and human-induced disturbances that affect vegetation dynamics on floodplains, where upstream barrages had altered flooding patterns, and consumptive use of plant resources was influencing natural processes. Floodplain vegetation in relation to physical environments and disturbances were studied along transects, perpendicular to the course of the Mahakali River in the western Terai, Nepal. Forest structural changes were studied for three years in ten plots. A randomized split-block experiment with nine burning and grazing treatments was performed in seasonally flooded grasslands. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess people's socio-economic status, natural resource use patterns and conservation attitudes. ^ Elevation, soil organic matter, nitrogen, percentage of sand and grazing intensity were significant in delineating herbaceous vegetation assemblages, whereas elevation and livestock grazing were significant in defining forest type boundaries. On the floodplain islands, highly grazed Dalbergia sissoo-Acacia catechu forests were devoid of understory woody vegetation, but the lightly grazed D. sissoo-mixed forests had a well-developed second canopy layer, comprising woody species other than D. sissoo and A. catechu. In grasslands, species richness and biomass production were highest at intermediate disturbance level represented by the lightly grazed and ungrazed early-burned treatments. Ethnicity, education and resource use patterns were important in influencing conservation attitudes. A succession towards the mixed forests would occur in D. sissoo-dominated floodplain forests, where dams and barrages reduce flooding and associated fluvial processes, and if livestock grazing is stopped, as occasionally suggested by nature conservationists. In seasonally flooded grasslands, early burning with moderate grazing would enhance the species diversity and productivity. There is a need to implement a participatory integrated wetland management plan, to include community development, education and off farm income generation, to assure participatory conservation and management of wetlands in Nepal. ^

This work involves the organization and content perspectives on Enterprise Content Management (ECM) framework. The case study at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte was based on ECM model to analyse the information management provided by the three main administrative systems: The Integrated Management of Academic Activities (SIGAA), Integrated System of Inheritance, and Contracts Administration (SIPAC) and the Integrated System for Administration and Human Resources (SIGRH). A case study protocol was designed to provide greater reliability to research process. Four propositions were examined in order to reach the specific objectives of identification and evaluation of ECM components from UFRN perspective. The preliminary phase provided the guidelines for the data collection. In total, 75 individuals were interviewed. Interviews with four managers directly involved on systems design were recorded (average duration of 90 minutes). The 70 remaining individuals were approached in random way in UFRN s units, including teachers, administrative-technical employees and students. The results showed the presence of many ECM elements in the management of UFRN administrative information. The technological component with higher presence was "management of web content / collaboration". But initiatives of other components (e.g. email and document management) were found and are in continuous improvement. The assessment made use of eQual 4.0 to examine the effectiveness of applications under three factors: usability, quality of information and offered service. In general, the quality offered by the systems was very good and walk side by side with the obtained benefits of ECM strategy adoption in the context of the whole institution

Mobile network coverage is traditionally provided by outdoor macro base stations, which have a long range and serve several of customers. Due to modern passive houses and tightening construction legislation, mobile network service is deteriorated in many indoor locations. Typically, solutions for indoor coverage problem are expensive and demand actions from the mobile operator. Due to these, superior solutions are constantly researched. The solution presented in this thesis is based on Small Cell technology. Small Cells are low power access nodes designed to provide voice and data services.. This thesis concentrates on a specific Small Cell solution, which is called a Pico Cell. The problem regarding Pico Cells and Small Cells in general is that they are a new technological solution for the mobile operator, and the possible problem sources and incidents are not properly mapped. The purpose of this thesis is to figure out the possible problems in the Pico Cell deployment and how they could be solved within the operator’s incident management process. The research in the thesis is carried out with a literature research and a case study. The possible problems are investigated through lab testing. Pico Cell automated deployment process was tested in the lab environment and its proper functionality is confirmed. The related network elements were also tested and examined, and the emerged problems are resolvable. Operators existing incident management process can be used for Pico Cell troubleshooting with minor updates. Certain pre-requirements have to be met before Pico Cell deployment can be considered. The main contribution of this thesis is the Pico Cell integrated incident management process. The presented solution works in theory and solves the problems found during the lab testing. The limitations in the customer service level were solved by adding the necessary tools and by designing a working question pattern. Process structures for automated network discovery and pico specific radio parameter planning were also added for the mobile network management layer..
