ABSTRACTScarlet Morning Glory is considered to be an infesting weed that affects several crops and causes serious damage. The application of chemical herbicides, which is the primary control method, requires a broad knowledge of the various characteristics of the solution and application technology for a more efficient phytosanitary treatment. Therefore this study aimed to characterize the effect of rainfall incidence on the control of Ipomoea hederifolia, considering droplet size, surface tension, contact angle of droplets formed by herbicides liquid on vegetal and artificial surfaces, associated to adjuvants and the volumetric distribution profile of the spray jet. The addition of the adjuvants to the herbicide spraying liquid improved the application quality, as it influenced the angle formed by the spray by broadening the deposition band of the spray nozzle and thus the possible distance between the nozzles on spray boom and due the changes at droplet size, which contribute to a safety application. The rainfall occurrence affected negatively the weed control with the different spraying liquids and also the dry matter weight, suggesting that the phytosanitary product applied was washed off.

In the present work we describe a method which allows the incorporation of surface tension into the GENSMAC2D code. This is achieved on two scales. First on the scale of a cell, the surface tension effects are incorporated into the free surface boundary conditions through the computation of the capillary pressure. The required curvature is estimated by fitting a least square circle to the free surface using the tracking particles in the cell and in its close neighbors. On a sub-cell scale, short wavelength perturbations are filtered out using a local 4-point stencil which is mass conservative. An efficient implementation is obtained through a dual representation of the cell data, using both a matrix representation, for ease at identifying neighbouring cells, and also a tree data structure, which permits the representation of specific groups of cells with additional information pertaining to that group. The resulting code is shown to be robust, and to produce accurate results when compared with exact solutions of selected fluid dynamic problems involving surface tension.

Human skinned muscle fibers were used to investigate the effects of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the tension/pCa relationship and on the functional properties of the Ca2+-release channel of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). In both fast- and slow-type fibers, identified by their tension response to pSr 5.0, BSA (0.7-15 µM) had no effect on the Ca2+ affinity of the contractile proteins and elicited no tension per se in Ca2+-loaded fibers. In contrast, BSA (>1.0 µM) potentiated the caffeine-induced tension in Ca2+-loaded fibers, this effect being more intense in slow-type fibers. Thus, BSA reduced the threshold caffeine concentration required for eliciting detectable tension, and increased the amplitude, the rate of rise and the area under the curve of caffeine-induced tension. BSA also potentiated the tension elicited in Ca2+-loaded fibers by low-Mgv solutions containing 1.0 mM free ATP. These results suggest that BSA modulates the response of the human skeletal muscle SR Ca2+-release channel to activators such as caffeine and ATP.

Concentration-response curves of isometric tension studies on isolated blood vessels are obtained traditionally. Although parameters such as Imax, EC50 and pA2 may be readily calculated, this method does not provide information on the temporal profile of the responses or the actual nature of the reaction curves. Computerized data acquisition systems can be used to obtain average data that represent a new source of otherwise inaccessible information, since early and late responses may be observed separately in detail

The present study deals with a species of enteropneust, Glossobalanus crozieri, focusing on two aspects of its respiration: a) oxygen consumption and body mass, and b) the influence of environmental oxygen tension on the respiratory rate. Preliminarily, the body water content was shown to be 85% of the whole body weight. The regression coefficient of the oxygen consumption on the wet body mass (0.578) seems to agree with the view that in enteropneusts respiration is mainly cutaneous. The respiratory rate was significantly reduced at O2 tensions from 76 mmHg downwards, suggesting conformity rather than regulation

Acute headaches are responsible for a significant percentage of the case load at primary care units and emergency rooms in Brazil. Dipyrone (metamizol) is easily available in these settings, being the most frequently used drug. We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study to assess the effect of dipyrone in the acute treatment of episodic tension-type headache. Sixty patients were randomized to receive placebo (intravenous injection of 10 ml saline) or 1 g dipyrone in 10 ml saline. We used seven parameters of analgesic evaluation. The patients receiving dipyrone showed a statistically significant improvement (P<0.05) of pain compared to placebo up to 30 min after drug administration. The therapeutic gain was 30% in 30 min and 40% in 60 min. The number of patients needed to be treated for at least one to have benefit was 3.3 in 30 min and 2.2 in 60 min. There were statistically significant reductions in the recurrence (dipyrone = 25%, placebo = 50%) and use of rescue medication (dipyrone = 20%, placebo = 47.6%) for the dipyrone group. Intravenous dipyrone is an effective drug for the relief of pain in tension-type headache and its use is justified in the emergency room setting.

Solceller baserade på organiska halvledare erbjuder en möjlighet till storskalig och billig solenergiproduktion. Organiska halvledare har den fördelen att de är lösningsprocesserbara vilket gör att solceller och andra elektroniska komponenter baserade på dessa halvledare kan tillverkas vid låga temperaturer och med liten energiförbrukning. Nackdelen med dessa material är deras strukturella och energetiska oordning som leder till lägre effektivitet. För att organiska solceller ska kunna kommersialiseras krävs grundläggande insikter i de olika processer som begränsar effektiviteten. En stor del av forskningen om dessa processer har varit fokuserad kring egenskaperna av solcellens olika komponenter (de aktiva materialen) som sådana, medan gränsytorna mellan olika material har fått mindre uppmärksamhet. Gränsytor mellan olika material har distinkt olika egenskaper jämfört med ett rent material, och gränsytors olika egenskaper kan ha en väldigt stor inverkan på hur solcellerna fungerar. Syftet med denna avhandling är att klargöra några olika gränsyterelaterade effekter i organiska dioder och solceller. De gränsytor som behandlas är gränsytan mellan kontakten och det aktiva lagret (metall-organisk) och gränsytan mellan donor och acceptor (organisk-organisk). Resultaten visar att metall-organiska gränsytor måste designas noggrant för att begränsa förlust av effektivitet. En icke-idealisk kontakt leder till starkt reducerad effektivitet på grund av att elektronerna extraheras ineffektivt. Även till synes idealiska kontakter kan orsaka förluster genom spontan laddningsöverföring från metallen till det organiska lagret som effektivt sett minskar på den spänning som cellen kan alstra. Den organisk-organiska gränsytan påverkar hur mycket ström cellen kan alstra och beroende på gränsytans beskaffenhet kan de negativa rekombinationsprocesserna i materialet kontrolleras. ------------------------------------------------- Orgaanisille puolijohteille perustuvat aurinkokennot mahdollistavat suurimuotoisen ja edullisen aurinkoenergiatuotannon. Orgaanisten puolijohteiden etu on että ne voidaan liuottaa, jolloin aurinkokennot ja muut näille johteille perustuvat elektroniset komponentit voidaan valmistaa alhaisessa lämpötilassa kuluttaen vähän energiaa. Materiaalien huonona puolena on kuitenkin niiden rakenteellinen ja energeettinen epäjärjestys, jonka seurauksena niiden tehokkuus on huonompi. Orgaanisten aurinkokennojen kaupallistaminen edellyttää perustavanlaatuista ymmärystä tehokkuutta rajoittavista prosesseista. Aurinkokennotutkimus on pääosin keskittynyt aurinkokennon eri komponenttien (aktiivisten materiaalien) ominaisuuksiin, kun taas eri materiaalien rajapinnat ovat jääneet vähemmälle huomiolle. Eri materiaalien välisillä rajapinnoilla on huomattavan erilaisia ominaisuuksia verrattuna puhtaisiin materiaaleihin. Rajapintojen ominaisuudet voivat kuitenkin vaikuttaa merkittävästi aurinkokennojen toimintaan. Tämän väitöstutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selventää joitain rajapintoihin liittyviä toimintoja orgaanisissa diodeissa ja aurinkokennoissa. Käsiteltävät rajapinnat ovat rajapinta kontaktin ja aktiivisen kerroksen välillä (metallis-orgaaninen) ja rajapinta donorin ja akseptorin välillä (orgaanis-orgaaninen). Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että metallis-orgaaniset rajapinnat tulee suunnitella huolellisesti, jotta tehokkuuden alenemista voidaan rajoittaa. Mikäli kontakti ei ole ideaalisti suunniteltu, vähenee tehokkuus huomattavasti, mikä johtuu elektronien tehottomasta ekstrahoinnista. Jopa ideaalisilta vaikuttavat kontaktit voivat johtaa tehokkuuden alenemiseen, mikäli varaus siirtyy spontaanisti metallista orgaaniseen kerrokseen, sillä tämä alentaa jännitettä jonka kenno voi tuottaa. Kennon orgaanis-orgaaninen rajapinta vaikuttaa siihen, kuinka paljon virtaa kenno pystyy tuottamaan. Rajapinnan ominaisuuksista riippuen materiaalin rekombinaatio on hallittavissa.

Lead (Pb2+) poisoning causes hypertension, but little is known regarding its acute effects on cardiac contractility. To evaluate these effects, force was measured in right ventricular strips that were contracting isometrically in 45 male Wistar rats (250-300 g) before and after the addition of increasing concentrations of lead acetate (3, 7, 10, 30, 70, 100, and 300 µM) to the bath. Changes in rate of stimulation (0.1-1.5 Hz), relative potentiation after pauses of 15, 30, and 60 s, effect of Ca2+ concentration (0.62, 1.25, and 2.5 mM), and the effect of isoproterenol (20 ng/mL) were determined before and after the addition of 100 µM Pb2+. Effects on contractile proteins were evaluated after caffeine treatment using tetanic stimulation (10 Hz) and measuring the activity of the myosin ATPase. Pb2+ produced concentration-dependent force reduction, significant at concentrations greater than 30 µM. The force developed in response to increasing rates of stimulation became smaller at 0.5 and 0.8 Hz. Relative potentiation increased after 100 µM Pb2+ treatment. Extracellular Ca2+ increment and isoproterenol administration increased force development but after 100 µM Pb2+ treatment the force was significantly reduced suggesting an effect of the metal on the sarcolemmal Ca2+ influx. Concentration of 100 µM Pb2+ also reduced the peak and plateau force of tetanic contractions and reduced the activity of the myosin ATPase. Results showed that acute Pb2+ administration, although not affecting the sarcoplasmic reticulum activity, produces a concentration-dependent negative inotropic effect and reduces myosin ATPase activity. Results suggest that acute lead administration reduced myocardial contractility by reducing sarcolemmal calcium influx and the myosin ATPase activity. These results also suggest that lead exposure is hazardous and has toxicological consequences affecting cardiac muscle.

In cardiac and skeletal muscle, eugenol (μM range) blocks excitation-contraction coupling. In skeletal muscle, however, larger doses of eugenol (mM range) induce calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The effects of eugenol are therefore dependent on its concentration. In this study, we evaluated the effects of eugenol on the contractility of isolated, quiescent atrial trabeculae from male Wistar rats (250-300 g; n=131) and measured atrial ATP content. Eugenol (1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 mM) increased resting tension in a dose-dependent manner. Ryanodine [100 µM; a specific ryanodine receptor (RyR) blocker] and procaine (30 mM; a nonspecific RyR blocker) did not block the increased resting tension induced by eugenol regardless of whether extracellular calcium was present. The myosin-specific inhibitor 2,3-butanedione monoxime (BDM), however, reversed the increase in resting tension induced by eugenol. In Triton-skinned atrial trabeculae, in which all membranes were solubilized, eugenol did not change resting tension, maximum force produced, or the force vs pCa relationship (pCa=-log [Ca2+]). Given that eugenol reduced ATP concentration, the increase in resting tension observed in this study may have resulted from cooperative activation of cardiac thin filaments by strongly attached cross-bridges (rigor state).

Strategies designed to improve educational systems have created tensions in school personnel as they struggle to respond to competing demands of ongoing change within their daily realities. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how teachers and administrators in one elementary school made sense ofthese tensions and to explore the factors that constrained or shaped their responses. A constructive interpretative case study using a grounded theory approach was used. Qualitative data were collected through document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation. In-depth information about teachers' and administrators' experiences and a contextual understanding oftension was generated from inductive analysis of the data. The study found that tension was a phenomenon situated in the context in which it arose. A contextual understanding of tension revealed the interactions between the institutional, personal, and emotional domains that continually shaped individual and group behavioural responses. This contextual understanding of tension provided the means to reinterpret resistance to change. It also helped to show how teachers and administrators reconstructed identities and made sense in context.. Of particular note was the crucial nature of the conditions under which teachers and adlninistrators shaped meaning and understood change. This study sheds light on the contextual intricacies of tension that may help leaders with the complex design and implementation of educational change..

Ce mémoire cherche à dégager les mécanismes et outils narratifs utilisés par les suspenses afin de configurer la tension narrative au cinéma. Le premier chapitre analyse la fonction de la synecdoque et de la métonymie dans la configuration d’un espace-temps tensif. Ainsi, l’exposition d’un danger enclenche une situation narrative incertaine dans laquelle le spectateur s’identifie au personnage menacé et vit avec lui son angoisse. À partir de définitions générales et de nombreux films tels que Jaws et The Matrix, le deuxième chapitre s’aventure à la recherche de récurrences thématiques et esthétiques dans le but de légitimer un genre ambigu. Le troisième chapitre introduit la démarche créative et la recherche en création. Le scénario Les saisons parfaites, un suspense psychologique, évoque L’enfer de Claude Chabrol et Black Swan de Darren Aronofsky. Donc, ce mémoire se demande comment s’articule la tension narrative et comment définir l’identité générique du suspense? Ce dernier existe-t-il seulement? Si oui, à quoi sert-il de l’étudier?
