During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 105, a thick sequence of lower Eocene to lower Oligocene sediments was recovered from Hole 647A in the southern Labrador Sea. These sediments contain diverse, well-preserved, high-latitude calcareous nannofossil flora. The nannofossil biostratigraphy of the hole indicates the presence of a minor hiatus between Zones NP 16 and NP 17 in the upper middle Eocene and a barren interval separating Zones NP 13 and NP 15. Species abundance is highest within the lower to middle Eocene and starts to decline near the base of the upper Eocene. No major change in the nannoflora was observed across the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, although a slight decrease in species abundance was recorded. The Paleogene calcareous nannofossils of nearby DSDP Site 112 were reexamined and compared with those of Site 647. Several cores were reassigned to different nannofossil zones. The calcareous nannoflora are dominated by high-latitude indicative species and also exhibit a high diversity, which suggests the influence of more temperate water masses in this region during Eocene and Oligocene time. One new subspecies from the middle Eocene, Sphenolithus furcatolithoides labradorensis, is described.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 149, five sites were drilled on the Iberia Abyssal Plain in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Both Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments were recovered. Oligocene to Miocene sediments were cored at deepwater Sites 897, 898, 899, and 900. Except for a few intervals, occurrences of generally abundant and well-preserved calcareous nannofossils suggest that the deposition of the turbidite-type sediments occurred above the calcite compensation depth (CCD). One major unconformity in the middle late Miocene is present. Detailed quantitative analyses of calcareous nannofossils are used to determine the changes occurring among the nannoflora in relation to sea-level variation. A succession of 89 biohorizons from the early Oligocene to the late Miocene are defined by combining the biostratigraphic results of the four sites studied in the Iberia Abyssal Plain. One new genus and eight new species are described: Camuralithus, Camuralithus pelliculatus, Ericsonia detecta, Helicosphaera limasera, Sphenolithus akropodus, Sphenolithus aubryae, Sphenolithus cometa, Reticulofenestra circus, and Syracosphaera lamina. Two new variations and seven new combinations are also introduced.

Clusters of sponge spicules found in Quaternary deep-water sediments at Sites 685 and 688 off Peru represent single individuals of small sponges or fragments of larger sponges. The spicule assemblages constituting these clusters probably represent a few demosponge species of the subclass Tetractinomorpha and order Astrophorida, because triaenes and microscleric euasters, as well as abundant monaxons, are present. As proved by incorporated Neogene diatoms, these spicule clusters are allochthonous. The sponge individuals probably inhabited deeper neritic environments during late Neogene time.

In the framework of the Italian project CO2 Monitor, two culture experiments were carried out in vertical closed photobioreactors with Pleurochrysis cf. pseudoroscoffensis Gayral & Fresnel 1983, a coccolithophore isolated from the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic Sea). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects induced by pH variations due to CO2 emissions on its growth and morphology. Two experiments were carried out with two different CO2 concentrations (1 and 2%). Growth and cell size in light microscopy, morphology and coccolith size in scanning electron microscopy, particulate nitrogen (PN) and particulate inorganic and organic carbon (PIC and POC) content of the coccolithophore were investigated during the light and dark phases. Dissolved inorganic nutrient (nitrate and phosphate) concentrations and pH of the medium and the presence of heterotrophic prokaryotes (HP) were monitored as well.
