INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the neural mobilization technique on electromyography function, disability degree, and pain in patients with leprosy. METHODS: A sample of 56 individuals with leprosy was randomized into an experimental group, composed of 29 individuals undergoing treatment with neural mobilization, and a control group of 27 individuals who underwent conventional treatment. In both groups, the lesions in the lower limbs were treated. In the treatment with neural mobilization, the procedure used was mobilization of the lumbosacral roots and sciatic nerve biased to the peroneal nerve that innervates the anterior tibial muscle, which was evaluated in the electromyography. RESULTS: Analysis of the electromyography function showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the experimental group in both the right (Δ%=22.1, p=0.013) and the left anterior tibial muscles (Δ%=27.7, p=0.009), compared with the control group pre- and post-test. Analysis of the strength both in the movement of horizontal extension (Δ%right=11.7, p=0.003/Δ%left=27.4, p=0.002) and in the movement of back flexion (Δ%right=31.1; p=0.000/Δ%left=34.7, p=0.000) showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in both the right and the left segments when comparing the experimental group pre- and post-test. The experimental group showed a significant reduction (p=0.000) in pain perception and disability degree when the pre- and post-test were compared and when compared with the control group in the post-test. CONCLUSIONS: Leprosy patients undergoing the technique of neural mobilization had an improvement in electromyography function and muscle strength, reducing disability degree and pain.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the degree of disability, pain levels, muscle strength, and electromyographic function (RMS) in individuals with leprosy. METHODS: We assessed 29 individuals with leprosy showing common peroneal nerve damage and grade 1 or 2 disability who were referred for physiotherapeutic treatment, as well as a control group of 19 healthy participants without leprosy. All subjects underwent analyses of degree of disability, electromyographic tests, voluntary muscle force, and the Visual Analog Pain Scale. RESULTS: McNemar's test found higher levels of grade 2 of disability (Δ = 75.9%; p = 0.0001) among individuals with leprosy. The Mann-Whitney test showed greater pain levels (Δ = 5.0; p = 0.0001) in patients with leprosy who had less extension strength in the right and left extensor hallucis longus muscles (Δ = 1.28, p = 0.0001; Δ = 1.55, p = 0.0001, respectively) and dorsiflexion of the right and left feet (Δ = 1.24, p = 0.0001; Δ = 1.45, p = 0.0001, respectively) than control subjects. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that the RMS score for dorsiflexion of the right (Δ = 181.66 m·s-2, p = 0.001) and left (Δ = 102.57m·s-2, p = 0.002) feet was lower in patients with leprosy than in control subjects, but intragroup comparisons showed no difference. CONCLUSIONS: Leprosy had a negative influence on all of the study variables, indicating the need for immediate physiotherapeutic intervention in individuals with leprosy. This investigation opens perspectives for future studies that analyze leprosy treatment with physical therapeutic intervention.

This case presents real characters, a sequence of events and other public information that has been impacting two corporations studied in this case. TIM Brazil and Oi S.A, two top players in the Brazilian telecom industry mobile and fixed segment respectively. While a merge between the two of them looks perfect and simple in an operational perspective due to its vertical complementarity, bring to them opportunities to win over a bundle offer (multi service package) that will consolidate their market predominance. Macroeconomic and internal corporate contrasts between these companies’ environment might signal that an impulsive could have a high price to pay in the future.

Graphics based systems of Augmented and Alternative Communication are widely used to promote communication in people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This study discusses an integration of Augmented Reality in communication interventions, by relating elements of Augmented and Alternative Communication and Applied Behaviour Analysis strategies. An architecture for an Augmented Reality based interactive system to assist interventions is proposed. STAR provides an Augmented Reality tool to assist interventions performed by therapists and support for parents to join in and participate in the child’s intervention. Finally we report on the usage of the Augmented Reality tool in interventions with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Objetivo: Fornecer uma revisão atualizada em língua portuguesa sobre a síndrome de Angelman, com ênfase nos mecanismos genéticos e moleculares dessa patologia, uma causa de deficiência mental severa que em alguns casos pode apresentar recorrência familiar. Método: Foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica utilizando a base de dados do PubMed, tendo como critérios de busca o termo "Angelman syndrome" isoladamente e combinado com "UBE3A", "clinical", "genetics" e "molecular" no título dos artigos. Dentre esses, foram selecionados artigos de revisão e artigos originais sobre a fisiopatologia da síndrome, com ênfase nos últimos dez anos. Resultados: Utilizando-se "Angelman syndrome" na busca, apareceram cerca de 1.100 artigos, incluindo 240 de revisão. Nos últimos dez anos são mais de 600 artigos, aproximadamente 120 de revisão, 50% dos quais publicados nos últimos cinco anos. Na base de dados SciELO, são apenas nove artigos sobre a síndrome, dos quais três em português e nenhum artigo atual de revisão. Conclusão: Após ter sido uma das principais causas que atraíram atenção ao estudo e ao entendimento dos mecanismos do imprinting genômico, a síndrome de Angelman está agora se revelando como uma patologia das sinapses. Apesar de o entendimento da fisiopatologia molecular da síndrome de Angelman ainda estar longe de ser compreendida, seu estudo está fornecendo uma visão extraordinária sobre os mecanismos que regem a plasticidade sináptica, novamente atraindo a atenção de pesquisadores que trabalham na fronteira do conhecimento.

The development of products from marine bioresources is gaining importance in the biotechnology sector. The global market for Marine Biotechnology products and processes was, in 2010, estimated at 2.8 billion with a cumulative annual growth rate of 510% (Børresen et al., Marine biotechnology: a new vision and strategy for Europe. Marine Board Position Paper 15. Beernem: Marine Board-ESF, 2010). Marine Biotechnology has the potential to make significant contributions towards the sustainable supply of food and energy, the solution of climate change and environmental degradation issues, and the human health. Besides the creation of jobs and wealth, it will contribute to the development of a greener economy. Thus, huge expectations anticipate the global development of marine biotechnology. The marine environment represents more than 70% of the Earths surface and includes the largest ranges of temperature, light and pressure encountered by life. These diverse marine environments still remain largely unexplored, in comparison with terrestrial habitats. Notwithstanding, efforts are being done by the scientific community to widespread the knowledge on oceans microbial life. For example, the J. Craig Venter Institute, in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Scripps Institution of Oceanography have built a state-of-the-art computational resource along with software tools to catalogue and interpret microbial life in the worlds oceans. The potential application of the marine biotechnology in the bioenergy sector is wide and, certainly, will evolve far beyond the current interest in marine algae. This chapter revises the current knowledge on marine anaerobic bacteria and archaea with a role in bio-hydrogen production, syngas fermentation and bio-electrochemical processes, three examples of bioenergy production routes.

The use of chemicals and chemical derivatives in agriculture and industry has contributed to their accumulation and persistence in the environment. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are among the environmental pollutants of most concern since, when improperly handled and disposed, they can persist in the environment, bioaccumulate through the food web, and may create serious public health and environmental problems. Development of an effective degradation process has become an area of intense research. The physical/chemical methods employed, such as volatilization, evaporation, photooxidation, adsorption, or hydrolysis, are not always effective, are very expensive, and, sometimes, lead to generation/disposal of other contaminants. Biodegradation is one of the major mechanisms by which organic contaminants are transformed, immobilized, or mineralized in the environment. A clear understanding of the major processes that affect the interactions between organic contaminants, microorganisms, and environmental matrix is, thus, important for determining persistence of the compounds, for predicting in situ transformation rates, and for developing site remediation. Information on their risks and impact and occurrence in the different environmental matrices is also important, in order to attenuate their impact and apply the appropriate remediation process. This chapter provides information on the fate of pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their impact, bioavailability, and biodegradation. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.

El crecimiento exponencial del tráfico de datos es uno de los mayores desafíos que enfrentan actualmente los sistemas de comunicaciones, debiendo los mismos ser capaces de soportar velocidades de procesamiento de datos cada vez mas altas. En particular, el consumo de potencia se ha transformado en uno de los parámetros de diseño más críticos, generando la necesidad de investigar el uso de nuevas arquitecturas y algoritmos para el procesamiento digital de la información. Por otro lado, el análisis y evaluación de nuevas técnicas de procesamiento presenta dificultades dadas las altas velocidades a las que deben operar, resultando frecuentemente ineficiente el uso de la simulación basada en software como método. En este contexto, el uso de electrónica programable ofrece una oportunidad a bajo costo donde no solo se evaluan nuevas técnicas de diseño de alta velocidad sino también se valida su implementación en desarrollos tecnológicos. El presente proyecto tiene como objetivo principal el estudio y desarrollo de nuevas arquitecturas y algoritmos en electrónica programable para el procesamiento de datos a alta velocidad. El método a utilizar será la programación en dispositivos FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) que ofrecen una buena relación costo-beneficio y gran flexibilidad para integrarse con otros dispositivos de comunicaciones. Para la etapas de diseño, simulación y programación se utilizaran herramientas CAD (Computer-Aided Design) orientadas a sistemas electrónicos digitales. El proyecto beneficiara a estudiantes de grado y postgrado de carreras afines a la informática y las telecomunicaciones, contribuyendo al desarrollo de proyectos finales y tesis doctorales. Los resultados del proyecto serán publicados en conferencias y/o revistas nacionales e internacionales y divulgados a través de charlas de difusión y/o encuentros. El proyecto se enmarca dentro de un área de gran importancia para la Provincia de Córdoba, como lo es la informática y las telecomunicaciones, y promete generar conocimiento de gran valor agregado que pueda ser transferido a empresas tecnológicas de la Provincia de Córdoba a través de consultorias o desarrollos de productos.

La investigación en medios porosos pretende profundizar el estudio en sistemas de partículas tales como suelos y rocas, haciendo énfasis en los procesos físicos que gobiernan el comportamiento de la fase sólida y los fluidos intersticiales (agua, hidrocarburos, electrolitos, etc.). Las investigaciones planteadas para este proyecto se encuentran relacionadas con el comportamiento mecánico de los sistemas de partículas, la interacción fluido-partícula y su relevancia en los problemas de flujo de contaminantes, problemas de flujo no miscible, y remediación de suelos contaminados. En cada uno de los aspectos mencionados se busca tanto interpretar comportamientos emergentes a través de estudios realizados a diferentes escalas, como desarrollar soluciones creativas e innovadoras para los problemas en estudio. Se evaluará la interacción fluido-partícula en la remediación de suelos contaminados con hidrocarburos para determinar las propiedades del suelo que gobiernan el fenómeno de desplazamiento no miscible. Se realizarán procedimientos experimentales para la remediación de As y otros metales o metaloides en suelo y aguas subterráneas. Se analizará el comportamiento de suelos en los procesos de transporte de lixiviado, a través de barreras de bajas permeabilidad (liners) como así también en barreras reactivas permeables, incluyendo variables como la actividad bacteriana, mecanismos de adsorción y reacciones químicas. Esta investigación tiene un fuerte componente de experimentación en laboratorio. Las herramientas utilizadas consisten fundamentalmente en el desarrollo y diseño de experimentos, donde se monitorea la influencia de las variables que controlan el comportamiento macroscópico del sistema. También se plantean trabajos basados en análisis numéricos, modelos de comportamiento, modelos físicos micro-mecánicos, y análisis de imágenes de alta resolución. Los estudios realizados son relevantes para el campo de la ingeniería geotécnica, geotecnia ambiental, industria del petróleo, hidrogeología e ingeniería geológica.

FUNDAMENTO: A escassez de dados sobre a obesidade infantil e o risco cardiovascular no Brasil. OBJETIVO: Determinar a prevalência de hipertensão, dislipidemia, obesidade e suas correlações em uma amostra de escolares de Itapetininga-SP. MÉTODOS: Corte transversal com coleta sistematizada de dados antropométricos (peso, altura, cintura, índice de massa corporal e níveis pressóricos) e dosagens de glicose, colesterol (total e frações), ácido úrico e apolipoproteina A e B, em uma amostra aleatória, representativa de escolares da rede pública de Itapetininga-SP. Análise dos dados utilizando parâmetros populacionais das curvas do NCHS(2000), categorias de pressão arterial do NHBPEP(2004) e categorias dos níveis séricos de colesterol propostos pela AHA para crianças e adolescentes(2003). RESULTADOS: Um total de 494 crianças e adolescentes participaram do estudo. Dos participantes, 11,7% apresentaram HAS, 51% apresentaram aumento do colesterol total, 40,5% apresentaram aumento do LDL-colesterol, 8,5% apresentaram aumento dos triglicérides e 6,1% tiveram valores baixos de HDL-colesterol. As médias (±desvio padrão) do CT, HDL-colesterol, LDL-colesterol e triglicérides foram respectivamente 172,1(27,9), 48,1(10,0), 105,7(23,1) e 90,9(43,8). A obesidade e o sobrepeso foram detectados em 12,8% e 9,7% da amostra, sendo que a obesidade determinou uma maior chance de se detectar a dislipidemia e a hipertensão quando comparada com os demais grupos. CONCLUSÃO: Este estudo fornece subsídios para a hipótese de uma distinta prevalência de excesso de peso entre escolares da rede pública das regiões nordeste e sudeste, maior nesta última. Adicionalmente, demonstra uma associação da obesidade com a dislipidemia e a hipertensão naquele grupo. Diante da incipiência de dados no Brasil sobre a questão estudada, o nosso trabalho fornece dados importantes para futuras comparações.

During six consecutive months, sampling were made at three points located on Governador Island and three on Paquetá Island in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Material was collected from dock pilings and rocks in the intertidal zone. In these samples, five species belonging to three families, Corynidae, Kirchenpaueriidae and Campanulariidae, were identified. The campanulariid species Obelia dichotoma Linnaeus, 1758, dominated at nearly all points sampled. The small number of species obtained in this survey is attributed to the intense pollution in the bay, which borders the second-largest industrial complex and the second-largest demographic center of Brazil.

Fifteen albino (Sprague Dawley) rats with subcutaneous transplanted fibromas was used in the present study. The tumour was formed by typical fibroblasts in a dense collagen matrix and was provenient from a fibroma that appeared spontaneously in an albino rat of the same strain. Ultrastructurally collagen disclosed normal periodicity and the fibroblasts showed irregular notched nuclei with irregular distribution of chromatin, that suggests transitional aspects to fibrosarcoma. The 15 animals, from different passage groups, were divided into: 8 animals submitted to treatment with the drug acexamic acid (CY-168F) - N acetyl-amino-6-hexanoic acid (plastenan) and 7 untreated control animals. Three of the treated animals showed a malignant transformation to fibrosarcoma. transitional histological features from typical fibroma to highly indifferentiated fibrosarcoma could be detected in come animal subjected to repeated biopsies. Ultrastructural study disclosed nuclear alterations and hyperactive ergastoplasm and collagen containing inclusions into the cytoplasm of fibroblasts. In the group of 7 untreated naimals, no malignant transformation could be detected histologically. Two aspects deserve attention: the malignant potential of a typical fibroma and the apparent effect of an antifibrosing drug in inducing malignization of this tumour.
