A 172 cm-long sediment core was collected from a small pristine lake situated within a centripetal drainage basin in a tropical karst environment (Ribeira River valley, southeastern Brazil) in order to investigate the paleoenvironmental record provided by the lacustrine geochemistry. Sediments derived from erosion of the surrounding cambisoils contain quartz, kaolinite, mica, chlorite and goethite. Accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) (14)C dating provided the geochronological framework. Three major sedimentary units were identified based on the structure and color of the sediments: Unit III from 170 to 140 cm (1030 +/- 60-730 +/- 60 yr BP), Unit II from 140 to 90 cm (730 +/- 60-360 +/- 60 yr BP) and Unit I from 90 to 0 cm (360 +/- 60-0 yr BP). Results of major and trace element concentrations were analysed through multivariate statistical techniques. Factor analysis provided three factors accounting for 72.4% of the total variance. F1 and F2 have high positive loadings from K, Ba, Cs, Rb, Sr, Sc, Th, light rare earth element (LREE), Fe, Cr, Ti, Zr, Hf and Ta, and high negative loadings from Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Br and loss on ignition (LOI). F3, with positive loadings from V and non-metals As and Sb, accounts for a low percentage (9.7%) of the total variance, being therefore of little interpretative use. The profile distribution of F1 scores reveals negative values in Units I and III, and positive values in Unit II, meaning that K, Ba, Cs, Rb, Sr, Sc, Th, LREE, Fe, Cr, Ti, Zr, Hf and Ta are relatively more concentrated in Unit II, and Mg, Co, Cu, Zn and Br are relatively more abundant in Units I and III. The observed fluctuations in the geochemical composition of the sediments are consistent with slight variations of the erosion intensity in the catchment area as a possible response to variations of climatic conditions during the last millennium. Na indústria farmacêutica (IF) são fundamentais as relações de confiança nas equipes de trabalho em todos os níveis. Há um forte impacto das mudanças, e da consequente incerteza, na confiança entre as equipes e sua motivação. Na produção acadêmica recente, as relações entre confiança e desempenho são exploradas e, particularmente, temos os resultados da primeira pesquisa feita no Brasil para mensurar os níveis de confiança interpessoal, indicadores de confiança e comprometimento dos colaboradores dentro de grandes empresas privadas. As empresas estudadas, e comparadas pelo Prof. Zanini, foram representantes da “nova” e “velha” economia, entre as quais os grandes diferenciadores são a gestão do conhecimento e o nível de incerteza decorrente das frequentes mudanças. Estes são pontos que aproximam as empresas da indústria farmacêutica de pesquisa às da “nova” economia segundo a abordagem proposta na pesquisa do Prof. Zanini. As empresas da indústria farmacêutica estarão implementando mudanças importantes em sua forma de conduzir o negócio, principalmente no que toca à comunicação, promoção e gestão das equipes comerciais nos próximos anos e este parece ser um momento particularmente interessante para uma pesquisa como esta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o nível de similaridade das equipes de propaganda (comerciais) do segmento de produtos biológicos (vacinas) de uma grande empresa multinacional da indústria farmacêutica de pesquisa, com os as equipes de empresas da nova economia. Pretendemos mensurar os níveis de confiança interpessoal, indicadores de confiança e comprometimento dos componentes das equipes comerciais da empresa, com vistas a examinar os efeitos das incertezas institucionais sobre os mesmos. As ferramentas de pesquisa foram: um formulário previamente validado aplicado aos 56 membros da força de vendas de uma área específica da empresa; dados públicos e privados da empresa (que permanecerá identificada como Empresa “J”) e entrevistas em profundidade com os gestores-chave da equipe sob avaliação: gerentes nacionais e distritais da força de vendas. Foi encontrada alguma similaridade entre os índices das empresas da “velha” economia e os da empresa “J”, para a maioria das avaliações. Entretanto, alguma semelhança entre os índices da Empresa “J” e os das empresas da “nova” economia também foi evidenciada, sobretudo na avaliação dos gerentes desta. Isto poderia indicar o impacto de algumas medidas implementadas pela Empresa “J” mais recentemente, que podem ter colaborado na geração de um ambiente de incerteza institucional e instabilidade. A partir da obtenção e comparação destes índices, são propostas considerações sobre as mudanças ocorridas nos contratos relacionais de trabalho dentro da Empresa “J” nos últimos anos e sobre as dinâmicas aparentes nas relações de sua equipe comercial.

Land cover change in the Neotropics represents one of the major drivers of global environmental change. Several models have been proposed to explore future trajectories of land use and cover change, particularly in the Amazon. Despite the remarkable development of these tools, model results are still surrounded by uncertainties. None of the model projections available in the literature plausibly captured the overall trajectory of land use and cover change that has been observed in the Amazon over the last decade. In this context, this study aims to review and analyze the general structure of the land use models that have most recently been used to explore land use change in the Amazon, seeking to investigate methodological factors that could explain the divergence between the observed and projected rates, paying special attention to the land demand calculations. Based on this review, the primary limitations inherent to this type of model and the extent to which these limitations can affect the consistency of the projections will also be analyzed. Finally, we discuss potential drivers that could have influenced the recent dynamic of the land use system in the Amazon and produced the unforeseen land cover change trajectory observed in this period. In a complementary way, the primary challenges of the new generation of land use models for the Amazon are synthesized. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This meta-analysis of land-cover transformations of the past 10-15 years in tropical forest-agriculture frontiers world-wide shows that swidden agriculture decreases in landscapes with access to local, national and international markets that encourage cattle production and cash cropping, including biofuels. Conservation policies and practices also accelerate changes in swidden by restricting forest clearing and encouraging commercial agriculture. However, swidden remains important in many frontier areas where farmers have unequal or insecure access to investment and market opportunities, or where multi-functionality of land uses has been preserved as a strategy to adapt to current ecological, economic and political circumstances. In some areas swidden remains important simply because intensification is not a viable choice, for example when population densities and/or food market demands are low. The transformation of swidden landscapes into more intensive land uses has generally increased household incomes, but has also led to negative effects on the social and human capital of local communities to varying degrees. From an environmental perspective, the transition from swidden to other land uses often contributes to permanent deforestation, loss of biodiversity, increased weed pressure, declines in soil fertility, and accelerated soil erosion. Our prognosis is that, despite the global trend towards land use intensification, in many areas swidden will remain part of rural landscapes as the safety component of diversified systems, particularly in response to risks and uncertainties associated with more intensive land use systems. Like other mountain areas in the world, the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Ongoing climate change processes are projected to have a high impact on the HKH region, and accelerated warming has been reported in the Himalayas. These climate change impacts will be superimposed on a variety of other environmental and social stresses, adding to the complexity of the issues. The sustainable use of natural resources is crucial to the long-term stability of the fragile mountain ecosystems in the HKH and to sustain the socio-ecological resilience that forms the basis of sustainable livelihoods in the region. In order to be prepared for these challenges, it is important to take stock of previous research. The ‘People and Resource Dynamics Project’ (PARDYP), implemented by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), provides a variety of participatory options for sustainable land management in the HKH region. The PARDYD project was a research for development project that operated in five middle mountain watersheds across the HKH – two in Nepal and one each in China, India, and Pakistan. The project ran from 1996 to 2006 and focused on addressing the marginalisation of mountain farmers, the use and availability of water, issues relating to land and forest degradation and declining soil fertility, the speed of regeneration of degraded land, and the ability of the natural environment to support the growing needs of the region’s increasing population. A key learning from the project was that the opinion of land users is crucial to the acceptance (and, therefore, successful application) of new technologies and approaches. A major challenge at the end of every project is to promote knowledge sharing and encourage the cross-fertilization of ideas (e.g., in the case of PARDYP, with other middle mountain inhabitants and practitioners in the region) and to share lessons learned with a wider audience. This paper will highlight how the PARDYP findings, including ways of addressing soil fertility and water scarcity, have been mainstreamed in the HKH region through capacity building (international, regional, and national training courses), networking, and the provision of backstopping services. In addition, in view of the challenges in watershed management in the HKH connected to environmental change, the lessons learned from the PARDYP are now being used by ICMOD to define and package climate change proof technology options to address climate change adaptation.
