Comparative studies on macrozoobenthos were done in 2 shallow mesotrophic lakes in the middle basins of the Yangtze River, China: Lake Biandantang where macrophytes were abundant, and Lake Houhu where macrophytes were scarce Samples were taken monthly at 4 stations in each lake from April 1997 to March 1999, and a total of 67 and 31 tara of macrozoobenthos were recorded in Lake Biandantang and Lake Houhu, respectively. Both annual mean density and biomass of macrozoobenthos were higher in Lake Biandantang than in Lake Houhu: 780 vs 532 indivials/m(2) and 37.1 vs 25.9 g wet mass/m(2), respectively. Abundance of functional feeding groups followed the order: scraper > collector > predator > shredder in Lake Biandantang, and collector > predator > scraper > shredder in Lake Houhu. Only 1 density peak occurred from winter to early spring in Lake Houhu; however, in Lake Biandantang, there were 2 peaks, the winter peak and spring peak. K-dominance curves and Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, and Margelef indices indicated that macrozoobenthos were more diverse in Lake Biandantang than in Lake Houhu Our study suggests that, in shallow lakes, submerged macrophytes are essential for the maintenance of biodiversity of macrozoobenthos mainly because the macrophytes increase habit heterogeneity and availability of suitable food, and may also decrease predation by fish on the macrozoobenthos.

Ecological studies on benthic nematodes were conducted in two small, shallow lakes in the middle Yangtze basin, China; Lake Houhu, where the main source of primary production is phytoplankton and Lake Biandantang where it is predominantly macrophytic in origin. Monthly sampling was carried out from April 1996 to March 1997. A total of 36 species of nematodes was found in Lake Houhu and 51 species in Lake Biandantang. The dominant trophic groups of nematodes were algophages in Lake Houhu and bacteriophages associated with omniphages and phytophages in Lake Biandantang. Community analyses based on K-dominance curves, Shannon-Wiener and Simpson diversity indices, demonstrate that the benthic nematodes are more diverse in Lake Biandantang than in Lake Houhu. The results suggest that the abundance of submerged vegetation is essential for maintenance of habitat heterogeneity and biodiversity of nematodes in shallow lakes.

The contributions of the planktonic unicellular algae [phytoplankton), the benthic unicellular algae [microphytobenthos) and the benthic multicellular algae (macrophytobenthos) to the primary production of the world ocean are evaluated, together with the respective limitations regarding data, concepts and methods. The use of “free-water” methods (e.g. in situ oxygen or CO2 budgets) is recommended in complement to the more specific measurements on enclosed organisms. For phytoplankton, a previous estimate of 30 . lo9 t C y-’ is retained as a minimal estimate. Earlier estimates of the world benthic production have been based on indirect calculations; revised estimates are suggested here which still lack precision but rely on the actual measurements available at present. Primary production of the micro- and macrobenthic algae amount to 50 and 375 g C m-? y-’ respectively as averages for the whole photic layer they can colonize, and total 2.9 . 10‘ t C y-’ for the world ocean. Thus, benthic algae contribute some 10% of the total marine primary production. On the continental shelf alone, the contributions of benthic and planktonib algae are commensurate and nearly equivalent.

Spatial and temporal distribution of vegetation net primary production (NPP) in China was studied using three light-use efficiency models (CASA, GLOPEM and GEOLUE) and two mechanistic ecological process models (CEVSA, GEOPRO). Based on spatial and temporal analysis (e.g. monthly, seasonally and annually) of simulated results from ecological process mechanism models of CASA, GLOPEM and CEVSA, the following conclusions could be made: (1) during the last 20 years, NPP change in China followed closely the seasonal change of climate affected by monsoon with an overall trend of increasing; (2) simulated average seasonal NPP was: 0.571 +/- 0.2 GtC in spring, 1.573 +/- 0.4 GtC in summer, 0.6 +/- 0.2 GtC in autumn, and 0.12 +/- 0.1 GtC in winter. Average annual NPP in China was 2.864 +/- 1 GtC. All the five models were able to simulate seasonal and spatial features of biomass for different ecological types in China. This paper provides a baseline for China's total biomass production. It also offers a means of estimating the NPP change due to afforestation, reforestation, conservation and other human activities and could aid people in using for-mentioned carbon sinks to fulfill China's commitment of reducing greenhouse gases.

© 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.Tree growth resources and the efficiency of resource-use for biomass production determine the productivity of forest ecosystems. In nutrient-limited forests, nitrogen (N)-fertilization increases foliage [N], which may increase photosynthetic rates, leaf area index (L), and thus light interception (IC). The product of such changes is a higher gross primary production and higher net primary production (NPP). However, fertilization may also alter carbohydrate partitioning from below- to aboveground, increasing aboveground NPP (ANPP). We analyzed effects of long-term N-fertilization on NPP, and that of long-term carbon storing organs (NPPS) in a Pinus sylvestris forest on sandy soil, a wide-ranging forest type in the boreal region. We based our analyses on a combination of destructive harvesting, consecutive mensuration, and optical measurements of canopy openness. After eight-year fertilization with a total of 70gNm-2, ANPP was 27±7% higher in the fertilized (F) relative to the reference (R) stand, but although L increased relative to its pre-fertilization values, IC was not greater than in R. On the seventh year after the treatment initiation, the increase of ANPP was matched by the decrease of belowground NPP (78 vs. 92gCm-2yr-1; ~17% of NPP) and, given the similarity of IC, suggests that the main effect of N-fertilization was changed carbon partitioning rather than increased canopy photosynthesis. Annual NPPS increased linearly with growing season temperature (T) in both treatments, with an upward shift of 70.2gCm-2yr-1 by fertilization, which also caused greater amount of unexplained variation (r2=0.53 in R, 0.21 in F). Residuals of the NPPS-T relationship of F were related to growing season precipitation (P, r2=0.48), indicating that T constrains productivity at this site regardless of fertility, while P is important in determining productivity where N-limitation is alleviated. We estimated that, in a growing season average T (11.5±1.0°C; 33-year-mean), NPPS response to N-fertilization will be nullified with P 31mm less than the mean (325±85mm), and would double with P 109mm greater than the mean. These results suggest that inter-annual variation in climate, particularly in P, may help explaining the reported large variability in growth responses to fertilization of pine stands on sandy soils. Furthermore, forest management of long-rotation systems, such as those of boreal and northern temperate forests, must consider the efficiency of fertilization in terms of wood production in the context of changes in climate predicted for the region.

The primary production in the Bristol Channel, U.K., was studied from 1973 to 1977: in this estuary, the euphotic zone extends from less than 0.5 m to greater than 10m and there is a large riverine input of inorganic nutrients. The standing stock of phytoplankton chlorophyll a was measured in 1973 and 1974 and was similar throughout the Bristol Channel but the rate of primary production was much greater where the water was less turbid. The estimated primary production was 6.8g C m−2 for the most turbid region and 164.9g C m−2 for the Outer Bristol Channel. A larger proportion of the annual primary production occurred in the spring in the Outer Channel than in the most turbid regions. Phaeocystis developed into blooms in some, but not all, years and exhibited a different light saturation curve to other phytoplankton populations. Serial incubations of short duration gave higher fixation rates than day-long incubations and it is argued that photoinhibition is probably insignificant in a mixed water column. Excretion rates of dissolved organic carbon by phytoplankton were always low.

A simulated in situ incubation box has been compared with in situ exposure for 14C production measurements in an estuarine environment. Measurements were made over the course of 14 months, mainly in the Tamar estuary; production rates ranged from less than 1 mg C m−2h−1 to 350 mg C m−2h−1 and there was no significant difference between results from the two methods. In the estuarine waters investigated, the simulated in situ incubator with neutral density filters, used with a Secchi disc to determine sampling depths, gives a satisfactory estimate of in situ primary production.
