New monometallic complex salts of the form X-2[M(L)(2)] [M = Ni2+, X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(1); M = Ni2+, X = (CH3)(4)N+ (2); M = Ni2+, X = (C2H5)(4)N+(3); M = Ni2+, X = (C3H7)(4)N+(4); M = Ni2+; X = (C6H13)(4)N+) (5); M = Pd2+,X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(6); M = Pd2+, X= (C2H5)(4)N+(7); M = Pd2+, X= (C3H7)(4)N+(8); M = Pd2+, X = (C6H13)(4)N+ (9); M = Pt2+, X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(10); L = p-tolylsulfonyldithiocarbimate (CH3C6H4SO2N=CS22 )] have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy; 1, 3, 4 and 5 by X-ray crystallography. In 1, 3, 4 and 5, the Ni atom is four coordinate with a square planar environment being bonded to four sulfur atoms from two bidentate ligands. All the salts are weakly conducting (sigma(rt) = 10 (7) to 10 (14) Scm (1)) because of the lack of significant S center dot center dot center dot S intermolecular interactions between complex anions [M(L)(2)](2) in the solid state however, they show behavior of semiconductors in the temperature range 353-453 K. All the Pd(II) and Pt(II) salts exhibited phtotolumeniscent emissions near visible region in solution at room temperature.

The solvothermal synthesis and characterisation of [C6H16N2][GaS2]2 (1), [C6H16N2][Ga2Se3(Se2)] (2), and mixed-metal phases with composition [C6H16N2][Ga2–xInxSe3(Se2)] (0 < x < 2)(3–5), is described. These materials have been characterised by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The materials contain one-dimensional anionic chains. In 1, these chains consist of edge-linked GaS4 tetrahedra, whilst in 2–5, the chains contain perselenide (Se2)2– units and comprise alternating four-membered [M2Se2] and five-membered [M2Se3] rings (where M = Ga, In). Compounds 3–5 represent the first examples of ternary mixed-metal [M2Se3(Se2)]2– chains.

Introduction Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a serious disease which can be associated with various activity limitations and participation restrictions. The aim of this paper was to describe how HIV affects the functioning and health of people within different environmental contexts, particularly with regard to access to medication. Method Four cross-sectional studies, three in South Africa and one in Brazil, had applied the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a classification instrument to participants living with HIV. Each group was at a different stage of the disease. Only two groups had had continuing access to antiretroviral therapy. The existence of these descriptive sets enabled comparison of the disability experienced by people living with HIV at different stages of the disease and with differing access to antiretroviral therapy. Results Common problems experienced in all groups related to weight maintenance, with two-thirds of the sample reporting problems in this area. Mental functions presented the most problems in all groups, with sleep (50%, 92/185), energy and drive (45%, 83/185), and emotional functions (49%, 90/185) being the most affected. In those on long-term therapy, body image affected 93% (39/42) and was a major problem. The other groups reported pain as a problem, and those with limited access to treatment also reported mobility problems. Cardiopulmonary functions were affected in all groups. Conclusion Functional problems occurred in the areas of impairment and activity limitation in people at advanced stages of HIV, and more limitations occurred in the area of participation for those on antiretroviral treatment. The ICF provided a useful framework within which to describe the functioning of those with HIV and the impact of the environment. Given the wide spectrum of problems found, consideration could be given to a number of ICF core sets that are relevant to the different stages of HIV disease. The sexual system of the symbiotic shrimp Thor amboinensis is described, along with observations on sex ratio and host-use pattern of different populations. We used a comprehensive approach to elucidate the previously unknown sexual system of this shrimp. Dissections, scanning electron microscopy, size-frequency distribution analysis, and laboratory observations demonstrated that T amboinensis is a protandric hermaphrodite: shrimp first mature as males and change into females later in life. Thor amboinensis inhabited the large and structurally heterogeneous sea anemone Stichoclactyla helianthus in large groups (up to 11 individuals) more frequently than expected by chance alone. Groups exhibited no particularly complex social structure and showed male-biased sex ratios more frequently than expected by chance alone. The adult sex ratio was male-biased in the four separate populations studied, one of them being thousands of kilometers apart from the others. This study supports predictions central to theories of resource monopolization and sex allocation. Dissections demonstrated that unusually large males were parasitized by an undescribed species of isopod (family Entoniscidae). Infestation rates were similarly low in both sexes (approximate to 11%-12%). The available information suggests that T. amboinensis uses pure search promiscuity as a mating system. This hypothesis needs to be formally tested with mating behavior observations and field measurements on the movement pattern of both sexes of the species. Further detailed studies on the lifestyle and sexual system of all the species within this genus and the development of a molecular phylogeny are necessary to elucidate the evolutionary history of gender expression in the genus Thor.

The genome of the most virulent among 22 Brazilian geographical isolates of Spodoptera frugiperda nucleopolyhedrovirus, isolate 19 (SfMNPV-1 9), was completely sequenced and shown to comprise 132 565 bp and 141 open reading frames (ORFs). A total of 11 ORFs with no homology to genes in the GenBank database were found. Of those, four had typical baculovirus; promoter motifs and polyadenylation sites. Computer-simulated restriction enzyme cleavage patterns of SfMNPV-1 9 were compared with published physical maps of other SfMNPV isolates. Differences were observed in terms of the restriction profiles and genome size. Comparison of SfMNPV-1 9 with the sequence of the SfMNPV isolate 3AP2 indicated that they differed due to a 1427 bp deletion, as well as by a series of smaller deletions and point mutations. The majority of genes of SfMNPV-1 9 were conserved in the closely related Spodoptera exigua NPV (SeMNPV) and Agrotis segetum NPV (AgseMNPV-A), but a few regions experienced major changes and rearrangements. Synthenic maps for the genomes of group 11 NPVs revealed that gene collinearity was observed only within certain clusters. Analysis of the dynamics of gene gain and loss along the phylogenetic tree of the NPVs showed that group 11 had only five defining genes and supported the hypothesis that these viruses form ten highly divergent ancient lineages. Crucially, more than 60% of the gene gain events followed a power-law relation to genetic distance among baculoviruses, indicative of temporal organization in the gene accretion process.

We propose an approach to the quantum-mechanical description of relativistic orientable objects. It generalizes Wigner`s ideas concerning the treatment of nonrelativistic orientable objects (in particular, a nonrelativistic rotator) with the help of two reference frames (space-fixed and body-fixed). A technical realization of this generalization (for instance, in 3+1 dimensions) amounts to introducing wave functions that depend on elements of the Poincar, group G. A complete set of transformations that test the symmetries of an orientable object and of the embedding space belongs to the group I =GxG. All such transformations can be studied by considering a generalized regular representation of G in the space of scalar functions on the group, f(x,z), that depend on the Minkowski space points xaG/Spin(3,1) as well as on the orientation variables given by the elements z of a matrix ZaSpin(3,1). In particular, the field f(x,z) is a generating function of the usual spin-tensor multi-component fields. In the theory under consideration, there are four different types of spinors, and an orientable object is characterized by ten quantum numbers. We study the corresponding relativistic wave equations and their symmetry properties.

The Jacadigo Group contains one of the largest sedimentary iron and associated manganese deposits of the Neoproterozoic. Despite its great relevance, no detailed sedimentological study concerning the unit has been carried out to date. Here we present detailed sedimentological data and interpretation on depositional systems, system tracts, external controls on basin evolution, basin configuration and regional tectonic setting of the Jacadigo Basin. Six depositional systems were recognized: (I) an alluvial fan system; (II) a siliciclastic lacustrine system; (III) a fan-delta system; (IV) a bedload-dominated river system; (V) an iron formation-dominated lacustrine or marine gulf system; and (VI) a rimmed carbonate platform system. The interpreted depositional systems are related to three tectonic system tracts. The first four depositional systems are mainly made of continental siliciclastics and refer to the rift initiation to early rift climax stage; the lake/gulf system corresponds to the mid to late rift climax stage and the carbonate platform represents the immediate to late post rift stage (Bocaina Formation deposits of the Ediacaran fossil-bearing Corumba Group). The spatial distribution of the depositional systems and associated paleocurrent patterns indicate a WNW-ESE orientation of the master fault zone related to the formation of the Jacadigo Basin. Thus, the iron formations of the Jacadigo Group were deposited in a starved waterbody related to maximum fault displacement and accommodation rates in a restricted continental rift basin. The Fe-Si-Mn source was probably related to hydrothermal plume activity that reached the basin through the fault system during maximum fault displacement phases. Our results also suggest a restricted tectono-sedimentary setting for the type section of the Puga Formation. The Jacadigo Group and the Puga Formation, usually interpreted as glacial deposits, are readdressed here as basin margin gravitational deposits with no necessary relation to glacial processes. Background. Impaired hand function is common in patients with arthritis and it affects performance of daily activities; thus, hand exercises are recommended. There is little information on the extent to which the disease affects activation of the flexor and extensor muscles during these hand-dexterity tasks. The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activation during such tasks in subjects with arthritis and in a healthy reference group. Methods. Muscle activation was measured in m. extensor digitorium communis (EDC) and in m. flexor carpi radialis (FCR) with surface electromyography (EMG) in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA, n = 20), hand osteoarthritis (HOA, n = 16) and in a healthy reference group (n = 20) during the performance of four daily activity tasks and four hand exercises. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) was measured to enable intermuscular comparisons, and muscle activation is presented as %MVIC. Results. The arthritis group used a higher %MVIC than the reference group in both FCR and EDC when cutting with a pair of scissors, pulling up a zipper and—for the EDC—also when writing with a pen and using a key (p < 0.02). The exercise “rolling dough with flat hands” required the lowest %MVIC and may be less effective in improving muscle strength. Conclusions. Women with arthritis tend to use higher levels of muscle activation in daily tasks than healthy women, and wrist extensors and flexors appear to be equally affected. It is important that hand training programs reflect real-life situations and focus also on extensor strength.

Ten polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from the rice- and maize-infecting Basidiomycete fungus Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group AG-1 IA. All loci were polymorphic in two populations from Louisiana in USA and Venezuela. The total number of alleles per locus ranged from four to eight. All 10 loci were also useful for genotyping soybean-infecting R. solani AG-1 isolates from Brazil and USA. One locus, TC06, amplified across two other AG groups representing different species, showing species-specific repeat length polymorphism. This marker suite will be used to determine the global population structure of this important pathogenic fungus.

The perivascular epithelioid cell has been proposed to be the unifying proliferating cell type in a number of lesions such as angiomyolipoma, lymphangiomyomatosis, clear cell sugar tumor and renal capsuloma. With the exception of rare examples of angiomyolipoma, they are non-metastasizing. We report four examples of a new member of this family of perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms that occur in abdominopelvic location and show metastatic properties. The patients, all women, were aged 19 to 41 years (mean, 32), and presented with a tumor mass involving the serosa of the ileum, uterus or pelvic cavity. Morphologically, the tumors were composed of sheets of large polygonal cells with glycogen-rich clear or eosinophilic cytoplasm and moderately pleomorphic nuclei, traversed by a delicate vasculature, mimicking clear cell carcinoma. There were areas of coagulative necrosis and occasional mitotic figures. Intracytoplasmic brown pigment was present in two cases. Spindly cells, smooth muscle and fat were absent. Lymphovascular invasion was present in all, lymph node metastasis was documented in two and metastasis to the ovary was present in one case. Two patients developed widespread metastatic disease after 10 and 28 months from diagnosis. One patient showed the clinical signs of tuberous sclerosis. In spite of the epithelial-like appearance, the tumor cells were negative for epithelial markers but were strongly positive with the melanogenesis-related marker HMB45. Another melanogenesis marker (MART-1) was positive in two cases. Other markers including S-100 protein, vimentin, muscle-specific actin, desmin and chromogranin A were negative. Thus, these tumors are not readily classifiable in the existing schema of known entities, and show over-lapping morpho-phenotypic features of clear cell sugar tumor of the lung and epithelioid angiomyolipoma. We consider them as sarcomas composed of a pure population of uncommitted perivascular epithelioid cell, that lack modulation toward smooth muscle or adipose cells.
