Tradeoff of average service cost and average delay for the state dependent M/M/1 queue

The optimal tradeoff between average service cost rate and average delay, is addressed for a M/M/1 queueing model with queue-length dependent service rates, chosen from a finite set. We provide an asymptotic characterization of the minimum average delay, when the average service cost rate is a small positive quantity V more than the minimum average service cost rate required for stability. We show that depending on the value of the arrival rate, the assumed service cost rate function, and the possible values of the service rates, the minimum average delay either a) increases only to a finite value, b) increases without bound as log(1/V), or c) increases without bound as 1/V, when V down arrow 0. We apply the analysis to a flow-level resource allocation model for a wireless downlink. We also investigate the asymptotic tradeoff for a sequence of policies which are obtained from an approximate fluid model for the M/M/1 queue.

Effect of TiN particulate reinforcement on corrosive behaviour of aluminium 6061 composites in chloride medium

In the present investigation, the corrosive behaviour of Al 6061-TiN particulate composites prepared by liquid metallurgy has been studied in chloride medium using electroanalytical techniques such as Tafel, cyclic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Surface morphology of the sample electrodes was examined using scanning electron micrography and energy dispersive X-ray methods. X-ray diffraction technique was used to confirm inclusion of TiN particulates in the matrix alloy and identify the alloying elements and intermetallic compounds in the Al 6061 composites. Polarization studies indicate an increase in the corrosion resistance in composites compared to the matrix alloy. EIS study reveals that the polarization resistance (R (p)) increases with increase in TiN content in composites, thus confirming improved corrosion resistance in composites. The observed decrease in corrosion rate in the case of composites is due to decoupling between TiN particles and Al 6061 alloy. It is understood that after the initiation of corrosion, interfacial corrosion products may have decoupled the conducting ceramic TiN from Al 6061 matrix alloy thus eliminating the galvanic effect between them.

Sparsely populated residue conformations in protein structures: Revisiting ``experimental'' Ramachandran maps

The Ramachandran map clearly delineates the regions of accessible conformational (phi-) space for amino acid residues in proteins. Experimental distributions of phi, values in high-resolution protein structures, reveal sparsely populated zones within fully allowed regions and distinct clusters in apparently disallowed regions. Conformational space has been divided into 14 distinct bins. Residues adopting these relatively rare conformations are presented and amino acid propensities for these regions are estimated. Inspection of specific examples in a completely arid, fully allowed region in the top left quadrant establishes that side-chain and backbone interactions may provide the energetic compensation necessary for populating this region of phi- space. Asn, Asp, and His residues showed the highest propensities in this region. The two distinct clusters in the bottom right quadrant which are formally disallowed on strict steric considerations correspond to the gamma turn (C7 axial) conformation (Bin 12) and the i + 1 position of Type II turns (Bin 13). Of the 516 non-Gly residues in Bin 13, 384 occupied the i + 1 position of Type II turns. Further examination of these turn segments revealed a high propensity to occur at the N-terminus of helices and as a tight turn in hairpins. Comparación de parámetros reproductivos bajo inseminación artificial y monta natural en cerdas, (Cofradia, G.E.P.)

Este experimento se realizó en la Granja Experimental Porcina (G.E.P), Cofradía, Masaya, con 82 cerdas del cuarto parto, 30 servidas a través de inseminación artificial (I.A) y 52 cerdas por monta natural (M.N); iniciando en mayo de 1,995 hasta mayo de 1,996 con el objetivo de evaluar los parámetros reproductivos y económicos en ambos sistemas de monta. Los dos grupos de cerdas reproductoras estaban compuestos por las razas LANDRACE, YORKSHIRE y DUROC. Las variables evaluadas fueron: Tasa de concepción (T.C) y tasa de parición (T.P), números de crías por partos (N.C.P), peso vivo promedio del lechón en la camada al nacer (P.V.L.C), relación beneficio-costo (B-C). Los resultados finales comprobados al 5% de significancia estadísticas fueron: T.P en I.A con 56.66% menor que en M.N con 76.92%, en N.C.P para I.A con 7.06, menor que en M.N de 8.725, P.V.L.C en I.A de 1.85 kg, similar a 1.74 kg, en MN. Para la relación B-C en I.A fue de 0.53 córdobas y para M.N de 0.56 córdobas.

South and South-East Asian coastal fisheries: their status and directions for improved management: conference synopsis and recommendations

As a step to address the problems of coastal fisheries in Asia, the WorldFish Center joined forces with fisheries agencies from eight developing Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and the Asian Development Bank, to implement a project entitled “Sustainable Management of Coastal Fish Stocks in Asia” (also known as the “TrawlBase” project). The project was implemented between 1998 and 2001. The main achievements of this partnership were: (a) Development of a database called “Fisheries Resource Information System and Tools” (FiRST), which contains trawl research survey data and socioeconomic information for selected fisheries, and facilitates its analysis; (b) Evaluation of the extent of resource decline and over-fishing, both biological and economic, in the region; (c) Identification of the measures needed to manage coastal fisheries in the participating countries, resulting in draft strategies and action plans; and (d) Strengthening of national capacity in coastal fisheries assessment, planning and management.

El presente artículo se centra en cómo muestran los autores cómicos algunos aspectos de la vida pública (el funcionamiento de la asamblea popular y el sistema judicial) y de la vida privada (la alimentación y la gastronomía) de la Atenas de los siglos V y IV a.C.

C., de manera que son posteriores al de Teón (siglo I), al atribuido a Hermógenes (siglo II) y al de Aftonio (siglo IV). En este trabajo se publica la primera traducción al español de esta obra. Esta traducción está precedida de una Introducción y está comentada en notas; finalmente, se añade un léxico de los términos retóricos en ella utilizados.

Current dependence of the energy gap in superconductors : a direct measurement

From the tunneling characteristics of a tin-tin oxide-lead junction, a direct measurement has been made of the energy-gap variation for a superconductor carrying a current in a compensated geometry. Throughout the region investigated – several temperatures near T_c and down to a reduced temperature t = 0.8 –the observed current dependence agrees quite well with predictions based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Gor’kov theory. Near T_c the predicted temperature dependence is also well verified, though deviations are observed at lower temperatures; even for the latter, the data are internally consistent with the temperature dependence of the experimental critical current. At the lowest temperature investigated, t = 0.8, a small “Josephson” tunneling current allowed further a direct measurement of the electron drift velocity at low current densities. From this, a preliminary experimental value of the critical velocity, believed to be the first reported, can be inferred in the basis of Ginzburg-Landau theory. For tin at t = 0.8, we find v_c = 87 m/sec. This value does not appear fully consistent with those predicted by recent theories for superconductors with short electronic mean-free-paths.
