The polarization of radiation by scattering on an atom embedded in combined external quadrupole electric and uniform magnetic fields is studied theoretically. Limiting cases of scattering under Zeeman effect, and Hanle effect in weak magnetic fields are discussed. The theory is general enough to handle scattering in intermediate magnetic fields (Hanle-Zeeman effect) and for arbitrary orientation of magnetic field. The quadrupolar electric field produces asymmetric line shifts, and causes interesting level-crossing phenomena either in the absence of an ambient magnetic field, or in its presence. It is shown that the quadrupolar electric field produces an additional depolarization in the Q/I profiles and rotation of the plane of polarization in the U/I profile over and above that arising from magnetic field itself. This characteristic may have a diagnostic potential to detect steady-state and time-varying electric fields that surround radiating atoms in solar atmospheric layers. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A constant switching frequency current error space vector-based hysteresis controller for two-level voltage source inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drives is proposed in this study. The proposed controller is capable of driving the IM in the entire speed range extending to the six-step mode. The proposed controller uses the parabolic boundary, reported earlier, for vector selection in a sector, but uses simple, fast and self-adaptive sector identification logic for sector change detection in the entire modulation range. This new scheme detects the sector change using the change in direction of current error along the axes jA, jB and jC. Most of the previous schemes use an outer boundary for sector change detection. So the current error goes outside the boundary six times during sector change, in one cycle,, introducing additional fifth and seventh harmonic components in phase current. This may cause sixth harmonic torque pulsations in the motor and spread in the harmonic spectrum of phase voltage. The proposed new scheme detects the sector change fast and accurately eliminating the chance of introducing additional fifth and seventh harmonic components in phase current and provides harmonic spectrum of phase voltage, which exactly matches with that of constant switching frequency voltage-controlled space vector pulse width modulation (VC-SVPWM)-based two-level inverter-fed drives.

Using the treatment of Smith et al., charge distribution in and consequently the dipole moments of several aliphatic acids have been evaluated. The electric moments of chloro (2·86 D), bromo (2·90 D), iodo (2·06 D) and trichloro (3·00 D) acetic acids have been measured in dioxan solution at 35°. The experimental values are compared with those calculated theoretically and discussed in terms of the various possible structures.

We present a measurement of the electric charge of the top quark using $\ppbar$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7~fb$^{-1}$ at the CDF II detector. We reconstruct $\ttbar$ events in the lepton+jets final state and use kinematic information to determine which $b$-jet is associated with the leptonically- or hadronically-decaying $t$-quark. Soft lepton taggers are used to determine the $b$-jet flavor. Along with the charge of the $W$ boson decay lepton, this information permits the reconstruction of the top quark's electric charge. Out of 45 reconstructed events with $2.4\pm0.8$ expected background events, 29 are reconstructed as $\ttbar$ with the standard model $+$2/3 charge, whereas 16 are reconstructed as $\ttbar$ with an exotic $-4/3$ charge. This is consistent with the standard model and excludes the exotic scenario at 95\% confidence level. This is the strongest exclusion of the exotic charge scenario and the first to use soft leptons for this purpose.

The Raman spectrum of lithium hydrazinium sulphate has been recorded both in the single crystal form and in aqueous solutions. The crystal exhibits thirty-eight Raman lines having the frequency shifts 52, 70, 104, 146, 174, 220, 260, 302, 350, 454, 470, 610, 630, 715, 977, 1094, 1115, 1132, 1177, 1191, 1260, 1444, 1493, 1577, 1630, 1670, 2205, 2484, 2553, 2655, 2734, 2848, 2894, 2939, 3028, 3132, 3290 and 3330 cm.−1 The aqueous solution gave rise to six Raman lines at 452, 980, 1050–1200, 1260, 1425 and 1570 cm.−1 apart from a maximum at 180 cm.−1 in the ‘wing’ accompanying the Rayleigh line. The observed Raman lines have been assigned as arising from the vibrations of the SO4 ion, N2H5+ ion, Li-O4 group, hydrogen bond and the lattice. The influence of the hydrogen bond on the N-H stretching vibrations has been pointed out. The various features of the observed spectrum strongly support the hypothesis that the NH3 group in the crystal is rotating around the N-N axis at room temperature.

Dielectric measurements have been made on a number of molecular complexes of beryllium, zinc, cadmium and mercuric halides. The polarizations observed have been interpreted in terms of a tetrahedral configuration for the undissociated beryllium, zinc and cadmium halide complexes. In other cases the observed polarization has been shown to be due to the dissociation of the complex in solution.

Using the treatment of Smith et al. charge distributions in and consequently the dipole moments of some aliphatic nitro compounds and oximes have been evaluated. The mesomeric moment derived as a difference between the calculated and the observed values gives a clear picture as to how the positive (+M) and the negative (-M) mesomeric effects operate in such systems.

A voltage source inverter-fed induction motor produces a pulsating torque due to application of nonsinusoidal voltages. Torque pulsation is strongly influenced by the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method employed. Conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) is known to result in less torque ripple than sine-triangle PWM. This paper aims at further reduction in the pulsating torque by employing advanced bus-clamping switching sequences, which apply an active vector twice in a subcycle. This paper proposes a hybrid PWM technique which employs such advanced bus-clamping sequences in conjunction with a conventional switching sequence. The proposed hybrid PWM technique is shown to reduce the torque ripple considerably over CSVPWM along with a marginal reduction in current ripple.

Describes a simple triggered vacuum gap developed for initiating electric arcs in vacuum which uses the property that the voltage required to breakdown a gap in vacuum in the presence of a solid insulating material is considerably less than the voltage required in the absence of such material. In this triggered vacuum gap a solid insulating material is used in the angular space between the main cathode and the concentric trigger electrode forming the auxiliary gap. Different materials like epoxy resin, Teflon (PTFE) and mica have been used. The trigger voltage was found to vary in the range 560-1840 V. The results with epoxy and Teflon were unsatisfactory because the trigger voltages showed wide scatter and the auxiliary gap was soon bridged by metal particles eroded from the electrodes. Though the trigger voltages required with mica were relatively high, consistent triggering could be obtained for a large number of trials before the auxiliary gap was bridged. This was probably due to better thermal stability of mica as compared with either epoxy or Teflon.

With the use of the quartz fiber spring balance, sorptions and desorptions of water on silica gel at 30°C were studied and the permanent and reproducible hysteresis loop was obtained. At different points on the desorption curve forming the loop, the gel was subjected to high tension glow electric discharge. As a result of the electric discharge, the gel at any point on the desorption curve shifts to a corresponding point on the sorption curve. This is due to the release from the cavities of gel of the entrapped water held in a metastable state. The electric discharge has no effect on the gel at different points on portions of the desorption curve which coincide with the sorption curve and also on the sorption curve itself, indicating the absence of entrapped water in the gel in these regions. The results afford direct experimental evidence of the reality of the cavity theory of sorption-desorption hysteresis.

Variation of switching frequency over the entire operating speed range of an induction motor (M drive is the major problem associated with conventional two-level three-phase hysteresis controller as well as the space phasor based PWM hysteresis controller. This paper describes a simple hysteresis current controller for controlling the switching frequency variation in the two-level PWM inverter fed IM drives for various operating speeds. A novel concept of continuously variable hysteresis boundary of current error space phasor with the varying speed of the IM drive is proposed in the present work. The variable parabolic boundary for the current error space phasor is suggested for the first time in this paper for getting the switching frequency pattern with the hysteresis controller, similar to that of the constant switching frequency voltage-controlled space vector PWM (VC-SVPWM) based inverter fed IM drive. A generalized algorithm is also developed to determine parabolic boundary for controlling the switching frequency variation, for any IM load. Only the adjacent inverter voltage vectors forming a triangular sector, in which tip of the machine voltage vector ties, are switched to keep current error space vector within the parabolic boundary. The controller uses a self-adaptive sector identification logic, which provides smooth transition between the sectors and is capable of taldng the inverter up to six-step mode of operation, if demanded by drive system. The proposed scheme is simulated and experimentally verified on a 3.7 kW IM drive.

Switching frequency variation over a fundamental period is a major problem associated with hysteresis controller based VSI fed IM drives. This paper describes a novel concept of generating parabolic trajectories for current error space phasor for controlling the switching frequency variation in the hysteresis controller based two-level inverter fed IM drives. A generalized algorithm is developed to determine unique set of parabolic trajectories for different speeds of operation for any given IM load. Proposed hysteresis controller provides the switching frequency spectrum of inverter output voltage, similar to that of the constant switching frequency VC-SVPWM based IM drive. The scheme is extensively simulated and experimentally verified on a 3.7 kW IM drive for steady state and transient performance.
