O biodiesel é definido como sendo uma mistura de monoésteres de ácidos graxos derivados de gorduras animal ou óleos vegetais, obtido por meio do processo de transesterificação com alcoóis de cadeia curta. Durante a sua produção é utilizada uma quantidade em excesso de álcool e um catalisador para favorecer a reação de formação dos ésteres; desta forma a corrente de saída do reator contém o catalisador, o álcool que não reagiu e os produtos da transesterificação, biodiesel e glicerina, formando um sistema bifásico; dependendo do grau de solubilidade desses compostos, pode haver quantidades de biodiesel na fase rica em glicerina e quantidades de glicerina na fase rica em biodiesel. Durante o processo de purificação do biodiesel é necessário executar uma lavagem com água, para promover a retirada do catalisador e impurezas do produto de interesse. Devido à quantidade de compostos envolvidos na produção e purificação é essencial conhecer os dados de equilíbrio líquido-líquido para poder predizer as proporções em que os compostos coexistem e, posteriormente, proceder com a purificação sob condições adequadas para obtenção do biodiesel com maior rendimento e auxiliar no projeto do reator e sistemas de separação. Os objetivos desse trabalho foram produzir o biodiesel a partir de uma planta oleaginosa nativa da região, a castanha do Brasil (Bertholletia excelsa H. B. K.) e, determinar dados de equilíbrio líquido-líquido (ELL) para os sistemas ternários: biodiesel de castanha do Brasil + metanol + glicerina e biodiesel de castanha do Brasil + metanol + água nas temperaturas de 30°C e 50°C. O biodiesel produzido foi inicialmente caracterizado segundo as normas da Agência Nacional de Petróleo (ANP) utilizando métodos físico-químicos. Os dados obtidos foram posteriormente correlacionados com os modelos termodinâmicos NRTL e UNIQUAC para o calculo do coeficiente de atividade de cada componente na fase liquida, com estimativa de novos parâmetros de interação energética. Os resultados obtidos com a modelagem foram satisfatórios, e foi observado que o modelo NRTL representou melhor os dados experimentais.

O Brasil possui um enorme potencial de plantas medicinais usadas popularmente e ainda pouco estudadas pela comunidade científica. Dentro da família Polygonaceae, destaca-se a espécie Polygonum punctatum Ell., conhecida popularmente como erva-de-bicho, acataia, cataia, capiçoba, pimenta-do brejo ou pimenta-da-água. Essa espécie é perene e encontrada em lugares úmidos ou inundados, desenvolvendo-se preferencialmente em solo de boa fertilidade, areno-argiloso ou argiloso e com bom teor de matéria orgânica. É originária da Ásia e encontra-se aclimatada no Brasil em todos os Estados, particularmente no Rio Grande do Sul, Sul e Sudeste (LOPES et al., 2003). Há relatos de que na medicina popular faz-se o uso de todas as partes da planta para as mais diversas finalidades, tais como: antidisentérica, antisséptica, detersiva, diurética, antitérmica, anti-reumática, vermífuga e excelente cicatrizante de feridas e úlceras. E que por ser fortemente emenagoga e abortiva, seu uso não é recomendado para gestantes (MORGAN, 1984). Dentre as propriedades terapêuticas relatadas, destaca-se também o uso no tratamento de problemas circulatórios, visto que ela estimula a circulação e diminui a fragilidade capilar, e que por isso, apresenta um efeito hemostático bastante útil no tratamento de hemorróidas (TESKE e TRENTINI, 1995). No entanto, plantas medicinais utilizadas popularmente necessitam de estudos científicos que comprovem sua eficácia, segurança e qualidade. A espécie Polygonum acre H.B.K. (sinonímia de Polygonum punctatum Ell) possui poucos estudos científicos comprovando essa vasta utilização na medicina popular, sendo assim, se faz necessário estudar atentamente seus extratos e óleos essenciais, bem como associar a estes, estudos fitoquímicos e de identificação anatômica e morfológica para que não haja problemas que comprometam a qualidade e a eficácia... This paper explores the idea of using differentiation strategies in the content-area classroom to improve reading skills and comprehension. In particular, this thesis explores methods and strategies that can be used in the classroom to help address the individual needs of English language learners (ELLs). A broad range of experts in curriculum, differentiation, and English language acquisition were consulted in the development of this review, which synthesizes the research on ELLs’ needs, differentiation, and differentiation strategies for ELL readers. The models for best teaching practices are then placed within a ninth grade language arts unit.

Thi report summarizes the results of the first year of the Reading First Initiative in Nebraska. Results show that teachers and schools have made a real effort to change. Student performance in the earlier grades has shown great promise for the following years, however, growth in fluency and comprehension in grades 2 and 3 were not as impressive and require additional attention. Overall, students make at least a year’s progress in most schools and most demographic groups. Schools can make much better use of the data they were collecting and need further direction in this area The assessment results were triangulated by observations in the classrooms, interviews, and teacher responses to professional development- teachers know how to teach PA and the alphabetic principle but were still struggling with: finding time and effective strategies for fluency training teaching comprehension strategies teaching self monitoring. Growing gaps for SPED, Ethnic minorities, and ELL students suggest an emphasis on the secondary and tertiary levels of intervention in the schools.

Transplanted individuals in operational tolerance (OT) maintain long-term stable graft function after completely stopping immunosuppression. Understanding the mechanisms involved in OT can provide valuable information about pathways to human transplantation tolerance. Here we report that operationally tolerant individuals display quantitative and functional preservation of the B-c ell compartment in renal transplantation. OT exhibited normal numbers of circulating total B cells, naive, memory and regulatory B cells (Bregs) as well as preserved B-cell receptor repertoire, similar to healthy individuals. In addition, OT also displayed conserved capacity to activate the cluster of differentiation 40 (CD40)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway in Bregs, in contrast, with chronic rejection. This work presents the effects of an anatoxin-a(s)-containing extract on a cockroach semi-isolated heart preparation and the results supporting the extract s biological activity on acetylcholinesterase (purified from ell). The presence of the toxin in cyanobacterial strains Anabaena spiroides (ITEP-024, ITEP-025 and ITEP-026) isolated from the Tapacurá reservoir in Pernambuco, Brazil, was confirmed by means of liquid chromatography coupled to an ion-trap mass spectrometer. The anticholinesterase activity was assessed biochemically by the Ellman test and was confirmed by measuring the cockroach s heart rate. The concentration of the extract containing the tested anatoxin-a(s) (antx-a(s)) (10, 16 and 100 μg.μL-1) inhibited the eel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by more than 90%. The cockroach cardiac frequency increased by a maximum of about 20% within 29 min after the addition of 2.5x10³ μg of extract containing antxa (s).g-1 bw (n=9, p<0.05). Our results strongly indicate that antx-a(s) is capable of exerting biological effects on cockroach, indicating that more research might be conducted to determine its role in the environment, especially on insects.

In this thesis I concentrate on the angular correlations in top quark decays and their next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD corrections. I also discuss the leading--order (LO) angular correlations in unpolarized and polarized hyperon decays. In the first part of the thesis I calculate the angular correlation between the top quark spin and the momentum of decay products in the rest frame decay of a polarized top quark into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark in Two-Higgs-Doublet-Models: $t(uparrow)rightarrow b+H^{+}$. The decay rate in this process is split into an angular independent part (unpolarized) and an angular dependent part (polar correlation). I provide closed form formulae for the ${mathcal O}(alpha_{s})$ radiative corrections to the unpolarized and the polar correlation functions for $m_{b}neq 0$ and $m_{b}=0$. The results for the unpolarized rate agree with the existing results in the literature. The results for the polarized correlations are new. I found that, for certain values of $tanbeta$, the ${mathcal O}(alpha_s)$ radiative corrections to the unpolarized, polarized rates, and the asymmetry parameter can become quite large. In the second part I concentrate on the semileptonic rest frame decay of a polarized top quark into a bottom quark and a lepton pair: $t(uparrow) to X_b + ell^+ + nu_ell$. I analyze the angular correlations between the top quark spin and the momenta of the decay products in two different helicity coordinate systems: system 1a with the $z$--axis along the charged lepton momentum, and system 3a with the $z$--axis along the neutrino momentum. The decay rate then splits into an angular independent part (unpolarized), a polar angle dependent part (polar correlation) and an azimuthal angle dependent part (azimuthal correlation). I present closed form expressions for the ${mathcal O}(alpha_{s})$ radiative corrections to the unpolarized part and the polar and azimuthal correlations in system 1a and 3a for $m_{b}neq 0$ and $m_{b}=0$. For the unpolarized part and the polar correlation I agree with existing results. My results for the azimuthal correlations are new. In system 1a I found that the azimuthal correlation vanishes in the leading order as a consequence of the $(V-A)$ nature of the Standard Model current. The ${mathcal O}(alpha_{s})$ radiative corrections to the azimuthal correlation in system 1a are very small (around 0.24% relative to the unpolarized LO rate). In system 3a the azimuthal correlation does not vanish at LO. The ${mathcal O}(alpha_{s})$ radiative corrections decreases the LO azimuthal asymmetry by around 1%. In the last part I turn to the angular distribution in semileptonic hyperon decays. Using the helicity method I derive complete formulas for the leading order joint angular decay distributions occurring in semileptonic hyperon decays including lepton mass and polarization effects. Compared to the traditional covariant calculation the helicity method allows one to organize the calculation of the angular decay distributions in a very compact and efficient way. This is demonstrated by the specific example of the polarized hyperon decay $Xi^0(uparrow) to Sigma^+ + l^- + bar{nu}_l$ ,($l^-=e^-, mu^-$) followed by the nonleptonic decay $Sigma^+ to p + pi^0$, which is described by a five--fold angular decay distribution.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor imaging is superior to somatostatin receptor subtype 2 (sst(2)) imaging in localizing benign insulinomas. Here, the role of GLP-1 and sst(2) receptor imaging in the management of malignant insulinoma patients was investigated.

Intravenous (IV) Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) induces transient psychotic symptoms in healthy subjects and in schizophrenic patients, but the psychotomimetic mechanism is unknown. One possibility is that THC stimulates dopamine (DA) release in the striatum. In this study we tested whether IV THC led to an increase in striatal DA release compared to placebo. We also investigated whether DA release and positive psychotic symptoms were related. Eleven healthy male volunteers completed two 123I-iodobenzamide ([123I]IBZM) single photon emission tomography (SPET) sessions and received IV THC (2.5 mg) or placebo in a randomized counterbalanced order, under double-blind conditions. Analysable data were obtained from nine participants. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to rate psychotomimetic effects. Striatal binding index values were calculated using the occipital cortex as a reference region. Both the PANSS positive and general symptoms increased significantly at 30 min following IV THC. There were no significant differences in binding index in the caudate or putamen under THC compared to placebo conditions. Positive psychotic symptoms and DA release were unrelated. THC did not lead to a significant increase in DA release even though the dose was sufficient for participants to have psychotic symptoms. These findings do not support a central role for striatal DA in THC-elicited psychosis.

We prospectively investigated the potential of positron emission tomography (PET) using the somatostatin receptor (SSTR) analogue ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and 2-deoxy-2[¹⁸F]fluoro-D-glucose (¹⁸F-FDG) in diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD). Twenty-six patients (mean age 68.9 ± 11.0 years) with DPLD were recruited for ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and ¹⁸F-FDG combined PET/high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) studies. Ten patients had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 12 patients had nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP), and 4 patients had other forms of DPLD. Using PET, the pulmonary tracer uptake (maximum standardized uptake value [SUV(max)]) was calculated. The distribution of PET tracer was compared to the distribution of lung parenchymal changes on HRCT. All patients demonstrated increased pulmonary PET signal with ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and ¹⁸F-FDG. The distribution of parenchymal uptake was similar, with both tracers corresponding to the distribution of HRCT changes. The mean SUV(max) was 2.2 ± 0.7 for ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and 2.8 ± 1.0 (t-test, p  =  .018) for ¹⁸F-FDG. The mean ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE SUV(max) in IPF patients was 2.5 ± 0.9, whereas it was 2.0 ± 0.7 (p  =  .235) in NSIP patients. The correlation between ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE SUV(max) and gas transfer (transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide [TLCO]) was r  =  -.34 (p  =  .127) and r  =  -.49 (p  =  .028) between ¹⁸F-FDG SUV(max) and TLCO. We provide noninvasive in vivo evidence in humans showing that SSTRs may be detected in the lungs of patients with DPLD in a similar distribution to sites of increased uptake of ¹⁸F-FDG on PET.

A systematic analysis of New Physics impacts on the rare decays KL→π0ell+ell- is performed. Thanks to their different sensitivities to flavor-changing local effective interactions, these two modes could provide valuable information on the nature of the possible New Physics at play. In particular, a combined measurement of both modes could disentangle scalar/pseudoscalar from vector or axial-vector contributions. For the latter, model-independent bounds are derived. Finally, the KL→π0μ+μ- forward-backward CP-asymmetry is considered, and shown to give interesting complementary information.

Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are ell known to be highly susceptible for nosocomial (i.e. hospital-acquired) infections due to their poor health and many invasive therapeutic treatments. The effects of acquiring such infections in ICU on mortality are however ill understood. Our goal is to quantify these effects using data from the National Surveillance Study of Nosocomial Infections in Intensive Care Units (Belgium). This is a challenging problem because of the presence of time-dependent confounders (such as exposure to mechanical ventilation)which lie on the causal path from infection to mortality. Standard statistical analyses may be severely misleading in such settings and have shown contradicting results. While inverse probability weighting for marginal structural models can be used to accommodate time-dependent confounders, inference for the effect of ?ICU acquired infections on mortality under such models is further complicated (a) by the fact that marginal structural models infer the effect of acquiring infection on a given, fixed day ?in ICU?, which is not well defined when ICU discharge comes prior to that day; (b) by informative censoring of the survival time due to hospital discharge; and (c) by the instability of the inverse weighting estimation procedure. We accommodate these problems by developing inference under a new class of marginal structural models which describe the hazard of death for patients if, possibly contrary to fact, they stayed in the ICU for at least a given number of days s and acquired infection or not on that day. Using these models we estimate that, if patients stayed in the ICU for at least s days, the effect of acquiring infection on day s would be to multiply the subsequent hazard of death by 2.74 (95 per cent conservative CI 1.48; 5.09).

Somatostatin receptor PET tracers such as [68Ga-DOTA,1-Nal3]-octreotide (68Ga-DOTANOC) and [68Ga-DOTA,Tyr3]-octreotate (68Ga-DOTATATE) have shown promising results in patients with neuroendocrine tumors, with a higher lesion detection rate than is achieved with 18F-fluorodihydroxyphenyl-l-alanine PET, somatostatin receptor SPECT, CT, or MR imaging. 68Ga-DOTANOC has high affinity for somatostatin receptor subtypes 2, 3, and 5 (sst2,3,5). It has a wider receptor binding profile than 68Ga-DOTATATE, which is sst2-selective. The wider receptor binding profile might be advantageous for imaging because neuroendocrine tumors express different subtypes of somatostatin receptors. The goal of this study was to prospectively compare 68Ga-DOTANOC and 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT in the same patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) and to evaluate the clinical impact of 68Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT. Methods: Eighteen patients with biopsy-proven GEP-NETs were evaluated with 68Ga-DOTANOC and 68Ga-DOTATATE using a randomized crossover design. Labeling of DOTANOC and DOTATATE with 68Ga was standardized using a fully automated synthesis device. PET/CT findings were compared with 3-phase CT scans and in some patients with MR imaging, 18F-FDG PET/CT, and histology. Uptake in organs and tumor lesions was quantified and compared by calculation of maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) using volume computer-assisted reading. Results: Histology revealed low-grade GEP-NETs (G1) in 4 patients, intermediate grade (G2) in 7, and high grade (G3) in 7. 68Ga-DOTANOC and 68Ga-DOTATATE were false-negative in only 1 of 18 patients. In total, 248 lesions were confirmed by cross-sectional and PET imaging. The lesion-based sensitivity of 68Ga-DOTANOC PET was 93.5%, compared with 85.5% for 68Ga-DOTATATE PET (P = 0.005). The better performance of 68Ga-DOTANOC PET is attributed mainly to the significantly higher detection rate of liver metastases rather than tumor differentiation grade. Multivariate analysis revealed significantly higher SUVmax in G1 tumors than in G3 tumors (P = 0.009). This finding was less pronounced with 68Ga-DOTANOC (P > 0.001). Altogether, 68Ga-DOTANOC changed treatment in 3 of 18 patients (17%). Conclusion: The sst2,3,5-specific radiotracer 68Ga-DOTANOC detected significantly more lesions than the sst2-specific radiotracer 68Ga-DOTATATE in our patients with GEP-NETs. The clinical relevance of this finding has to be proven in larger studies.

BACKGROUND Small benign insulinomas are hard to localise, leading to difficulties in planning of surgical interventions. We aimed to prospectively assess the insulinoma detection rate of single-photon emission CT in combination with CT (SPECT/CT) with a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor avid radiotracer, and compare detection rates with conventional CT/MRI techniques. METHODS In our prospective imaging study, we enrolled adults aged 25-81 years at centres in Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. Eligible patients had proven clinical and biochemical endogenous hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia and no evidence for metastatic disease on conventional imaging. CT/MRI imaging was done at referring centres according to standard protocols. At three tertiary nuclear medicine centres, we used whole body planar images and SPECT/CT of the abdomen up to 168 h after injection of (111)In-[Lys40(Ahx-DTPA-(111)In)NH2]-exendin-4 ((111)In-DTPA-exendin-4) to identify insulinomas. Consenting patients underwent surgery and imaging findings were confirmed histologically. FINDINGS Between Oct 1, 2008, and Dec 31, 2011, we recruited 30 patients. All patients underwent (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 imaging, 25 patients underwent surgery (with histological analysis), and 27 patients were assessed with CT/MRI. (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 SPECT/CT correctly detected 19 insulinomas and four additional positive lesions (two islet-cell hyperplasia and two uncharacterised lesions) resulting in a positive predictive value of 83% (95% CI 62-94). One true negative (islet-cell hyperplasia) and one false negative (malignant insulinoma) result was identified in separate patients by (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 SPECT/CT. Seven patients (23%) were referred to surgery on the basis of (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 imaging alone. For 23 assessable patients, (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 SPECT/CT had a higher sensitivity (95% [95% CI 74-100]) than did CT/MRI (47% [27-68]; p=0·011). INTERPRETATION (111)In-DTPA-exendin-4 SPECT/CT could provide a good second-line imaging strategy for patients with negative results on initial imaging with CT/MRI.
