There are no direct observational methods for determining the total rate at which energy is extracted from the solar wind by the magnetosphere. In the absence of such a direct measurement, alternative means of estimating the energy available to drive the magnetospheric system have been developed using different ionospheric and magnetospheric indices as proxies for energy consumption and dissipation and thus the input. The so-called coupling functions are constructed from the parameters of the interplanetary medium, as either theoretical or empirical estimates of energy transfer, and the effectiveness of these coupling functions has been evaluated in terms of their correlation with the chosen index. A number of coupling functions have been studied in the past with various criteria governing event selection and timescale. The present paper contains an exhaustive survey of the correlation between geomagnetic activity and the near-Earth solar wind and two of the planetary indices at a wide variety of timescales. Various combinations of interplanetary parameters are evaluated with careful allowance for the effects of data gaps in the interplanetary data. We show that the theoretical coupling, P, function first proposed by Vasyliunas et al. is superior at all timescales from 1-day to 1-year.

The evergreen Quercus ilex L. is one of the most common trees in Italian urban environments and is considered effective in the uptake of particulate and gaseous atmospheric pollutants. However, the few available estimates on O3 and NO2 removal by urban Q. ilex originate from model-based studies (which indicate NO2/O3 removal capacity of Q. ilex) and not from direct measurements of air pollutant concentrations. Thus, in the urban area of Siena (central Italy) we began long-term monitoring of O3/NO2 concentrations using passive samplers at a distance of 1, 5, 10 m from a busy road, under the canopies of Q. ilex and in a nearby open-field. Measurements performed in the period June 2011-October 2013 showed always a greater decrease of NO2 concentrations under the Q. ilex canopy than in the open-field transect. Conversely, a decrease of average O3 concentrations under the tree canopy was found only in autumn after the typical Mediterranean post-summer rainfalls. Our results indicate that interactions between O3/NO2 concentrations and trees in Mediterranean urban ecosystems are affected by temporal variations in climatic conditions. We argue therefore that the direct measurement of atmospheric pollutant concentrations should be chosen to describe local changes of aerial pollution.

A recent study on the metabolism of 1-14C-α-linolenic acid in the guinea pig revealed that the fur had the highest specific activity of all tissues examined, 48 h after dosing. The present study investigated the pattern of tissue lipid labeling following an oral dose of 1-14C-linoleic acid after the animals had been dosed for the same time as above. Guinea pigs were fed one of two diets with a constant linoleic acid content (18% total fatty acids) and a different content of α-linolenic acid (0.3 or 17.3%) from weaning for 3 wk and 1-14C-linoleic acid was given orally to each animal for 48 h prior to sacrifice. The most highly labeled tissues (dpm/mg of linoleic acid) were liver, followed by brain, lung and spleen, heart, kidney and adrenal and intestines, in both diet groups. The liver had almost a three-fold higher specific activity than skin and fur which was more extensively labeled than the adipose and carcass. Approximately two-thirds of the label in skin plus fur was found in the fur which, because of a low lipid mass, would indicate that the fur was highly labeled. All tissues derived from animals on the diet with the low α-linolenic acid level were significantly more labeled than the tissues from the animals on the high α-linolenic acid diet, by a factor of 1.5 to 3. The phospholipid fraction was the most highly labeled fraction in the liver, free fatty acids were the most labeled fraction in skin & fur, while triacyglycerols were the most labeled in the carcass and adipose tissue. In these tissues, more than 90% of the radioactivity was found in fatty acids with 2-double bonds in the tissue lipids. These data indicate that the majority of label found in guinea pig tissues 48 h after dosing was still associated with a fatty acid fraction with 2-double bonds, which suggests there was little metabolism of linoleic acid to more highly unsaturated fatty acids in this time frame. In this study, the labeling of guinea pig tissues with linoleic acid, 48 h after dosing, was quite different from the labeling with α-linolenic acid reported previously. The retention of the administered radioactivity from 14C-linoleic acid in the whole body lipids was 1.6 times higher in the group fed the low α-linolenic acid diet (diet contained a total of 1.8 g PUFA/100 g diet)compared with the group fed the high α-linolenic acid diet (diet contained 3.6 g PUFA/100 g diet). The lack of retention of 14C-labeled lipids in the whole body would be consistent with an increased rate of β-oxidation of the labeled fatty acid on the diet rich in PUFA, a result supported by other studies using direct measurement of labeled carbon dioxide.

1. In semi-arid climates, seasonally-flowing streams provide most of the water required for human use, but knowledge of how water extraction affects ecological processes is limited. Predicted alterations in stream flows associated with the impacts of climate change further emphasize the need to understand these processes. Benthic algae are an important base for stream food webs, but we have little knowledge of how algae survive dry periods or respond to altered flow regimes.

2. We sampled 19 streams within the Grampians National Park, south-eastern Australia and included four components: a survey of different drought refuges (e.g. permanent pools, dry biofilm on stones and dry leaf packs) and associated algal taxa; a survey of algal regrowth on stones after flows recommenced to determine which refuges contributed to regrowth; reciprocal transplant experiments to determine the relative importance of algal drift and regrowth from dry biofilm in recolonization; direct measurement of algal drift to determine taxonomic composition in relation to benthic assemblage composition.

3. Algae showed little specificity for drought refuges but did depend on them; no species were found that were not present in at least one of the perennial pool, dry biofilm or leaf pack refuges. Perennial pools were most closely correlated with the composition of algal assemblages once flows resumed, but the loss or gain of perennial pools that might arise from stream regulation is unlikely to affect the composition of algal regrowth. However, regulated streams were associated with strong increases in algal density in dry biofilm, including increased densities of Cyanobacteria.

4. A model for algal recolonization in seasonally-flowing streams identified three pathways for algal recolonization (drift-dependent, dry biofilm-dependent and contributions from both), depending on whether streams are diatom-dominated or dominated by filamentous algae. The model predicted the effects of changes to stream flow regimes on benthic algal recolonization and provides a basis for hypotheses testable in streams elsewhere.

The health and wellbeing of children in lower-income countries is the focus of much international effort, yet there has been very little direct measurement of this. Objective. The current objective was to study the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a general population of secondary school children in Fiji, a low middle-income country in the Pacific. Methods. Self-reported HRQoL was measured by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 in 8947 school children (aged 12–18 years) from 18 secondary schools on Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji. HRQoL in Fiji was compared to that of school-aged children in 13 high- and upper middle-income countries. Results. The school children in Fiji had lower HRQoL than the children in the 13 comparison countries, with consistently lower physical, emotional, social, and school functioning and wellbeing. HRQoL was particularly low amongst girls and Indigenous Fijians. Conclusions. These findings raise concerns about the general functioning and wellbeing of school children in Fiji. The consistently low HRQoL across all core domains suggests pervasive underlying determinants. Investigation of the potential determinants in Fiji and validation of the current results in Fiji and other lower-income countries are important avenues for future research.

First results are presented for a uniaxial tensile stage designed to operate on a scanning micro X-ray diffraction synchrotron beamline. The new tensile stage allows experiments at typical loading cycles used in standard engineering stress–strain tests. Several key features have been implemented to support in situ loading experiments at the intragranular length scale. The physical size and weight of the load cell were minimized to maintain the correct working distance for the X-ray focusing optics and to avoid overloading the high-resolution raster scan translation stages. A high-magnification optical microscope and image correlation code were implemented to enable automated online tracking capabilities during macroscopic elongation of the sample. Preliminary in situ tensile loading experiments conducted on beamline 12.3.2 at the Advanced Light Source using a polycrystalline commercial-purity Ti test piece showed that the elastic–plastic response of individual grains could be measured with submicrometre spatial resolution. The experiments highlight the unique instrumentation capabilities of the tensile stage for direct measurement of deviatoric strain and observation of dislocation patterning on an intragranular length scale as a function of applied load.

Joint and muscular loads are the major internal loads in the human body. Knowing or being able to estimate those loads is of importance in multiple instances, such as in designing implants, predicting surgical outcomes, in estimating occupational loading, and in designing interventions. Unfortunately, the direct measurement of the body's internal forces is difficult, rather invasive, and requires surgical operations. Therefore, the need is growing for computational tools for muscular, bone and joint loading estimation. This article will present a review of the computational methods that can be utilized for musculoskeletal and joint system loading estimation. © 2014 CIMNE, Barcelona, Spain.

This work has as main objective to find mathematical models based on linear parametric estimation techniques applied to the problem of calculating the grow of gas in oil wells. In particular we focus on achieving grow models applied to the case of wells that produce by plunger-lift technique on oil rigs, in which case, there are high peaks in the grow values that hinder their direct measurement by instruments. For this, we have developed estimators based on recursive least squares and make an analysis of statistical measures such as autocorrelation, cross-correlation, variogram and the cumulative periodogram, which are calculated recursively as data are obtained in real time from the plant in operation; the values obtained for these measures tell us how accurate the used model is and how it can be changed to better fit the measured values. The models have been tested in a pilot plant which emulates the process gas production in oil wells

From an analysis of the decay B-s(0)-> J/psi phi, we obtain the width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates Delta Gamma equivalent to(Gamma(L)-Gamma(H))=0.17 +/- 0.09(stat)+/- 0.02(syst) ps(-1) and the CP-violating phase phi(s)=-0.79 +/- 0.56(stat)(-0.01)(+0.14)(syst). Under the hypothesis of no CP violation (phi(s)equivalent to 0), we obtain 1/Gamma=tau/(B-s(0))=1.52 +/- 0.08(stat)(-0.03)(+0.01)(syst) ps and Delta Gamma=0.12(-0.10)(+0.08)(stat)+/- 0.02(syst) ps(-1). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.1 fb(-1) accumulated with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This is the first direct measurement of the CP-violating mixing phase in the B-s(0) system.

This paper proposes a simple methodology for mercury quantification in natural water by stripping chronopotentiometry at constant current, using gold (film) electrodes constructed from recordable CDs in stationary cell. The proposed method allows the direct measurement of labile mercury in natural waters. To quantify total mercury, a robust and low cost UV irradiation system was developed for the degradation of organic constituents of water. The proposed system presents such advantages as excellent sensitivity, low cost, versatility, and smaller dimensions (portability for on-field applications) when compared with other techniques (ICP, GFAAS, fluorimetry) traditionally utilized for mercury quantification. A large linear region of responses was observed, situated over the range 0.02 - 200 μ g L-1. Various experimental parameters were optimized and the system allowed quantifications in natural samples, with detection limit of 8 ng L-1 and excellent reproducibility (RSD of 1.4% for 48 repetitive measurements using a 10 μ g L-1 mercury solution). Different metal ions were evaluated, including copper, as possible interferences on stripping mercury signals. Applications of the new method were demonstrated for the analysis of certified and groundwater samples spiked with a known amount of mercury and for the quantification of methylmercury in synthetic oceanic water, originally utilized for fishes contamination experiment.

A comparative study of nine assay methods for dextransucrase and related enzymes has been made. A relatively widespread method for the reaction of dextransucrase with sucrose is the measurement of the reducing value of D-fructose by alkaline 3,5-dinitrosalicylate (DNS) and thereby the amount of D-glucose incorporated into dextran. Another method is the reaction with C-14-sucrose with the addition of an aliquot to Whatman 3MM paper squares that are washed three times with methanol to remove C-14-D-fructose and unreacted C-14-sucrose, followed by counting of C-14-dextran on the paper by liquid scintillation counting (LSC). It is shown that both methods give erroneous results. The DNS reducing value method gives extremely high values due to over-oxidation of both D-fructose and dextran, and the C-14-paper square method gives significantly low values due to the removal of some of the C-14-dextran from the paper by methanol washes. In the present study, we have examined nine methods and find two that give values that are identical and are an accurate measurement of the dextransucrase reaction. They are (1) a C-14-sucrose/dextransucrase digest in which dextran is precipitated three times with three volumes of ethanol, dissolved in water, and added to paper and counted in a toluene cocktail by LSC: and (2) precipitation of dextran three times with three volumes of ethanol from a sucrose/dextransucrase digest, dried, and weighed. Four reducing value methods were examined to measure the amount of D-fructose. Three of the four (two DNS methods, one with both dextran and D-fructose and the other with only D-fructose, and the ferricyanide/arsenomolybdate method with is-fructose) gave extremely high values due to over-oxidation of D-fructose, D-glucose, leucrose, and dextran. The authors studied the utility of the physical test of laryngeal movement in swallowing disorders of the oropharyngeal region. Measurement and palpation of the larynx during deglutition were performed in the neck of 14 dysphagic patients and in two normal control groups. The normal groups were used to establish the pattern of the movement and the normal values of laryngeal elevation. Control elevation ranged from 1.80 to 2.50 cm. In eight patients laryngeal motion was defective and presented values ranging from zero to 1.50 cm. Palpation during laryngeal movement also revealed unexpected anomalous displacement such as lateral shifting and lowering of the larynx. In six patients with defective laryngeal motion, pharyngeal and upper esophageal sphincter function were also impaired. Direct measurement and palpation of laryngeal mobility during deglutition is a noninvasive method that can be used to evaluate dysphagia and the risk for aspiration. Also, it allows physical assessment of the evolution of the disorder.

The long-standing discrepancy between the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and the analysis of pion photoproduction multipoles is greatly diminished by use of s-wave multipoles that are in accord with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and describe the experimental data in the threshold region. The remaining difference may be due to contributions of channels with more pions and/or heavier mesons whose contributions to the sum rule remain to be investigated by a direct measurement of the photoabsorption cross sections.
