A hybrid finite difference method and vortex method (HDV), which is based on domain decomposition and proposed by the authors (1992), is improved by using a modified incomplete LU decomposition conjugate gradient method (MILU-CG), and a high order implicit difference algorithm. The flow around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds number R-e = 1000, 200 and the angular to rectilinear speed ratio alpha is an element of (0.5, 3.25) is studied numerically. The long-time full developed features about the variations of the vortex patterns in the wake, and drag, lift forces on the cylinder are given. The calculated streamline contours agreed well with the experimental visualized flow pictures. The existence of critical states and the vortex patterns at the states are given for the first time. The maximum lift to drag force ratio can be obtained nearby the critical states.

A method to determine the admissibility of symbolic sequences and to find the unstable periodic orbits corresponding to allowed symbolic sequences for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed by using the ordering of stable and unstable manifolds. By investigating the unstable periodic orbits up to length 6, a one to one correspondence between the unstable periodic orbits and their corresponding symbolic sequences is shown under the system symmetry decomposition.

Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) using method of snapshots was performed on three different types of oscillatory Marangoni flows in half-zone liquid bridges of low-Pr fluid (Pr = 0.01). For each oscillation type, a series of characteristic modes (eigenfunctions) have been extracted from the velocity and temperature disturbances, and the POD provided spatial structures of the eigenfunctions, their oscillation frequencies, amplitudes, and phase shifts between them. The present analyses revealed the common features of the characteristic modes for different oscillation modes: four major velocity eigenfunctions captured more than 99% of the velocity fluctuation energy form two pairs, one of which is the most energetic. Different from the velocity disturbance, one of the major temperature eigenfunctions makes the dominant contribution to the temperature fluctuation energy. On the other hand, within the most energetic velocity eigenfuction pair, the two eigenfunctions have similar spatial structures and were tightly coupled to oscillate with the same frequency, and it was determined that the spatial structures and phase shifts of the eigenfunctions produced the different oscillatory disturbances. The interaction of other major modes only enriches the secondary spatio-temporal structures of the oscillatory disturbances. Moreover, the present analyses imply that the oscillatory disturbance, which is hydrodynamic in nature, primarily originates from the interior of the liquid bridge. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. In this paper we introduce four scenario Cluster based Lagrangian Decomposition (CLD) procedures for obtaining strong lower bounds to the (optimal) solution value of two-stage stochastic mixed 0-1 problems. At each iteration of the Lagrangian based procedures, the traditional aim consists of obtaining the solution value of the corresponding Lagrangian dual via solving scenario submodels once the nonanticipativity constraints have been dualized. Instead of considering a splitting variable representation over the set of scenarios, we propose to decompose the model into a set of scenario clusters. We compare the computational performance of the four Lagrange multiplier updating procedures, namely the Subgradient Method, the Volume Algorithm, the Progressive Hedging Algorithm and the Dynamic Constrained Cutting Plane scheme for different numbers of scenario clusters and different dimensions of the original problem. Our computational experience shows that the CLD bound and its computational effort depend on the number of scenario clusters to consider. In any case, our results show that the CLD procedures outperform the traditional LD scheme for single scenarios both in the quality of the bounds and computational effort. All the procedures have been implemented in a C++ experimental code. A broad computational experience is reported on a test of randomly generated instances by using the MIP solvers COIN-OR and CPLEX for the auxiliary mixed 0-1 cluster submodels, this last solver within the open source engine COIN-OR. We also give computational evidence of the model tightening effect that the preprocessing techniques, cut generation and appending and parallel computing tools have in stochastic integer optimization. Finally, we have observed that the plain use of both solvers does not provide the optimal solution of the instances included in the testbed with which we have experimented but for two toy instances in affordable elapsed time. On the other hand the proposed procedures provide strong lower bounds (or the same solution value) in a considerably shorter elapsed time for the quasi-optimal solution obtained by other means for the original stochastic problem.

We have applied the Schwinger Multichannel Method(SMC) to the study of electronically inelastic, low energy electron-molecule collisions. The focus of these studies has been the assessment of the importance of multichannel coupling to the dynamics of these excitation processes. It has transpired that the promising quality of results realized in early SMC work on such inelastic scattering processes has been far more difficult to obtain in these more sophisticated studies.
We have attempted to understand the sources of instability of the SMC method which are evident in these multichannel studies. Particular instances of such instability have been considered in detail, which indicate that linear dependence, failure of the separable potential approximation, and difficulties in converging matrix elements involving recorrelation or Q-space terms all conspire to complicate application of the SMC method to these studies. A method involving singular value decomposition(SVD) has been developed to, if not resolve these problems, at least mitigate their deleterious effects on the computation of electronically inelastic cross sections.
In conjunction with this SVD procedure, the SMC method has been applied to the study of the H_2 , H_2O, and N_2 molecules. Rydberg excitations of the first two molecules were found to be most sensitive to multichannel coupling near threshold. The (3σ_g → 1π_g ) and (1π_u → 1π_g) valence excitations of the N_2 molecule were found to be strongly influenced by the choice of channel coupling scheme at all collision energies considered in these studies.

In this paper a recently published finite element method, which combines domain decomposition with a novel technique for solving nonlinear magnetostatic finite element problems is described. It is then shown how the method can be extended to, and optimised for, the solution of time-domain problems. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper, a Decimative Spectral estimation method based on Eigenanalysis and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) is presented and applied to speech signals in order to estimate Formant/Bandwidth values. The underlying model decomposes a signal into complex damped sinusoids. The algorithm is applied not only on speech samples but on a small amount of the autocorrelation coefficients of a speech frame as well, for finer estimation. Correct estimation of Formant/Bandwidth values depend on the model order thus, the requested number of poles. Overall, experimentation results indicate that the proposed methodology successfully estimates formant trajectories and their respective bandwidths.

Natural gas hydrate (NGH) reservoirs have been considered as a substantial future clean energy resource and how to recover gas from these reservoirs feasibly and economically is very important. Microwave heating will be taken as a promising method for gas production from gas hydrates for its advantages of fast heat transfer and flexible application. In this work, we investigate the formation/decomposition behavior of natural gas hydrate with different power of microwave (2450MHZ), preliminarily analyze the impact of microwave on phase equilibrium of gas hydrate, and make calculation based on van der Waals-Platteeuw model. It is found that microwave of a certain amount of power can reduce the induction time and sub-cooling degree of NGH formation, e.g., 20W microwave power can lead to a decrease of about 3A degrees C in sub-cooling degree and the shortening of induction time from 4.5 hours to 1.3 hours. Microwave can make rapid NGH decomposition, and water from NGH decomposition accelerates the decomposition of NGH with the decomposition of NGH. Under the same pressure, microwave can increase NGH phase equilibrium temperature. Different dielectric properties of each composition of NGH may cause a distinct difference in temperature in the process of NGH decomposition. Therefore, NGH decomposition by microwave can be affected by many factors.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was first used as chelating agent and metal nitrates as precursor of ferrite in the fabrication of nanocrystalline Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4 particles by the sol-gel method. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the decomposition of dried gel, the formation of spinel structured NiZnCu ferrite, the sizes of annealed particles, the saturation magnetization and coercivity of annealed particles on annealing temperature is presented.

Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites with different weight percentages of NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix were successfully fabricated by the sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor of silica, and metal nitrates as precursors of NiZnCu ferrite. The thermal decomposition process of the dried gel was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The obtained Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4/SiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The formation of stoichiometric NiZnCu-ferrite dispersed in silica matrix is confirmed when the weight percentage of ferrite is not more than 30%. Samples with higher ferrite content have small amount of alpha-Fe2O3. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state is observed as the ferrite content increases from 20 to 90wt%.

The organic sol method for preparing ultrafine transition metal colloid particles reported for the first time by Bonnemann et al. [H. Bonnemann, W Brijoux, R. Brinkmann, E. Dinjus, T. Jou beta en, B. Korall, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl., 30 (1991) 1312] has been improved in this paper. The improved organic sol method uses SnCl2 as the reductant and methanol as the organic solvent. Thus, this method is very simple and inexpensive. It was found that the average size of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalysts can be controlled by adjusting the evaporating temperature of the solvent. Therefore, the Pt/C catalysts prepared by the same method are suitable for evaluating the size effect of the Pt particles on electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that when the evaporating temperatures of the solvent are 65, 60, 50, 40, and 30 degrees C, the average sizes of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalysts prepared are: 2.2, 3.2, 3.8, 4.3, and 4.8 nm, respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results demonstrated that the small Pt particles are easily oxidized and the decomposition/adsorption of methanol cannot proceed on the surfaces of Pt oxides.

Fe-Ni-O samples, with Fe/Ni ratio ranging from 2 to 1/3, were synthesized. Samples synthesized with and without citric acid in the precursor were compared and it was found that the addition of citric acid is the necessary condition for FeNi3 formation; it was found that FeNi3 alloys were formed in these samples even when calcined in an air atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the samples. Because of the existence of FeNi3 alloys, Fe-Ni-O samples showed strong reactivity to NO and NO + O-2 but were inert to O-2 alone.

A general procedure to determine the absolute configuration of cyclic secondary amines with Mosher's NMR method is demonstrated, with assignment of absolute configuration of isoanabasine as an example. Each Mosher amide can adopt two stable conformations (named rotamers) caused by hindered rotation around amide C-N bond. Via a three-step structural analysis of four rotamers, the absolute configuration of (-)-isoanabasine is deduced to be (R) on the basis of Newman projections, which makes it easy to understand and clarify the application of Mosher's method to cyclic secondary amines. Furthermore, it was observed that there was an unexpected ratio of rotamers of Mosher amide derived from (R)-isoanabasine and (R)-Mosher acid. This phenomenon implied that it is necessary to distinguish the predominant rotamer from the minor one prior to determining the absolute configuration while using this technique.

The synthesis of nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrites Ba(CoxZn1-x)(2)Fe16O27 powders by sol-gel auto-combustion method has been investigated. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results reveal that the dried gel exhibits auto-combustion behavior. After combustion, pure nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrite phase starts to appear at the calcination temperature of 800 degrees C. The crystallinity and the grain size increase at higher temperature. The saturation magnetization and coercivity clearly depend on calcination temperature and Co content X.
