Methacrylate-based monolithic columns with electroosmotic flow (EOF) or very weak EOF are prepared by in situ copolymerization in the presence of a porogen in fused-silica capillaries pretreated with a bifunctional reagent. Satisfactory separations of acidic and basic compounds on the column with EOF at either low or high pH are achieved, respectively. With sulfonic groups as dissociation functionalities, sufficient EOF mobility still remains as high as 1.74 x 10(-4) cm(2) s(-1) V-1 at low pH. Under this condition, seven acidic compounds are readily separated within 5.7 min. Moreover, at high pH, the peak shape of basic compounds is satisfactory without addition of any masking amines into running mobile phase since the secondary interaction between the basic compounds and the monolithic stationary phase are minimized at high pH. Reversed-phase mechanism for both acidic and basic compounds is observed under investigated separation conditions. In addition, possibilities of acidic and basic compound separations on a monolithic column with extremely low EOF are discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work several Pt-based anode catalysts supported on carbon XC-72R were prepared with a novel method and characterized by means of XRD, TEM and XPS analysis. It was found that all these catalysts are consisted of uniform nanosized particles with sharp distribution and Pt lattice parameter decreases with the addition of Ru or Pd and increases with the addition of Sn or W. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements and single direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) tests jointly showed that the presence of Sn, Ru and W enhances the activity of Pt towards ethanol electro-oxidation in the following order: Pt1Sn1/C > Pt1Ru1/C > Pt1W1/C > Pt1Pd1/C > Pt/C. Moreover, Pt1Ru1/C further modified by W and Mo showed improved ethanol electro-oxidation activity, but its DEFC performance was found to be inferior to that measured for Pt1Sn1/C. Under this respect, several PtSn/C catalysts with different Pt/Sn atomic ratio were also identically prepared and characterized and their direct ethanol fuel cell performances were evaluated. It was found that the single direct ethanol fuel cell having Pt1Sn1/C or Pt3Sn2/C or Pt2Sn1/C as anode catalyst showed better performances than those with Pt3Sn1/C or Pt4Sn1/C. It was also found that the latter two cells exhibited higher performances than the single cell using Pt1Ru1/C, which is exclusively used in PEMFC as anode catalyst for both methanol electro-oxidation and CO-tolerance. This distinct difference in DEFC performance between the catalysts examined here would be attributed to the so-called bifunctional mechanism and to the electronic interaction between Pt and additives. It is thought that an amount of -OHads, an amount of surface Pt active sites and the conductivity effect of PtSn/C catalysts would determine the activity of PtSn/C with different Pt/Sn ratios. At lower temperature values or at low current density regions where the electro-oxidation of ethanol is considered not so fast and its chemisorption is not the rate-determining step, the Pt3Sn2/C seems to be more suitable for the direct ethanol fuel cell. At 75 degreesC, the single ethanol fuel cell with Pt3Sn2/C as anode catalyst showed a comparable performance to that with Pt2Sn1/C, but at higher temperature of 90 degreesC, the latter presented much better performance. It is thought from a practical point of view that Pt2Sn1/C, supplying sufficient -OHads and having adequate active Pt sites and acceptable ohmic effect, could be the appropriate anode catalyst for DEFC. A comprehensive study on physical and chemical properties of Mo/MCM-22 bifunctional catalysts has been made by using combined analytic and spectroscopic techniques, such as adsorption, elemental analysis, and Xe-129 and P-31 NMR of adsorbed trialkylphosphine oxide probe molecules. Samples prepared by the impregnation method with Mo loadings ranging from 2-10 wt.% have been examined and the results are compared with that obtained from samples prepared by mechanical mixing using MoO3 or Mo2C as agents. Sample calcination treatment is essential in achieving a well-dispersed metal species in Mo/MCM-22. It was found that, upon initial incorporation, the Mo species tend to inactivate both Bronsted and Lewis sites locate predominantly in the supercages rather than the 10-membered ring channels of MCM-22. However, as the Mo loading exceeds 6 wt.%, the excessive Mo species tend to migrate toward extracrystalline surfaces of the catalyst. A consistent decrease in concentrations of acid sites with increasing Mo loading < 6 wt.% was found, especially for those with higher acid strengths. Upon loading of Mo > 6 wt.%, further decreases in both Bronsted and Lewis acidities were observed. These results provide crucial supports for interpreting the peculiar behaviors previously observed during the conversion of methane to benzene over Mo/MCM-22 catalyst under non-oxidative conditions, in which an optimal performance was achieved with a Mo loading of 6 wt.%. The effects of Mo incorporation on porosity and acidity features of the catalyst are discussed. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Peptide mass mapping analysis, utilizing a regenerable enzyme microreactor with metal-ion chelated adsorption of enzyme, combined with matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was developed. Different procedures from the conventional approaches were adopted to immobilize the chelator onto the silica supports, that is, the metal chelating agent of iminodiacetic acid (IDA) was reacted with glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) before its immobilization onto the inner wall of the fused-silica capillary pretreated with NH4HF2. The metal ion of copper and subsequently enzyme was specifically adsorbed onto the surface to form the immobilized enzyme capillary microreactor, which was combined with MALDI-TOF-MS to apply for the mass mapping analysis of nL amounts of protein samples. The results revealed that the peptide mapping could routinely be generated from 0.5 pmol protein sample in 15 min at 50degreesC, even 20 fmol cytochrome c could be well digested and detected.

In this work, we illustrate a simple chelation-based strategy to trigger DNA release from DNA-incorporated multilayer films, which were fabricated through the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of DNA and inorganic zirconium (IV) ion (Zr4+). After being incubated in several kinds of chelator solutions, the DNA multilayer films disassembled and released the incorporated DNA. This was most probably due to the cleavage of coordination/electrostatic interactions between Zr4+ and phosphate groups of DNA. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), UV-vis spectrometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the assembly and the disassembly of the films.

The novel nanoparticles, [Ru(bPY)(3)](2)SiW12O40 center dot 2H(2)O(2) were firstly synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and TEM. The nanoparticles were used to fabricate a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) by dispersing nanoparticles and graphite powder in silicone grease. Thus-prepared CPE shows bifunctional electrocatalytic activities towards the reduction of nitrite and the oxidation of oxalate, and exhibits sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL).

By using the bifunctional ligand, 8-hydroxyquinoline-functionalized organosilane (Q-Si), the new mesoporous material Q-MCM-41 covalently bonded with 8-hydroxyquinoline was synthesized. Through the ligand exchange reaction, the new near-infrared (NIR) luminescent mesoporous LnQ(3)-MCM-41 (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) materials were prepared by linking the lanthanide quinolinate complexes to the ordered mesoporous Q-MCM-41 material. The LnQ(3)-MCM-41 materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and N-2 adsorption/desorption, and they all show the characteristic mesoporous structure of MCM-41 with highly uniform pore size distributions.

A near-infrared luminescent macroporous material (PL-Macromaterial) and a near-infrared luminescent/magnetic bifunctional macroporous material (MML-Macromaterial) were synthesized by using polystyrene microspheres (PS) and Fe3O4 @polystyrene core-shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PS), respectively, as templates. Both the PL-Macromaterial and the M/PL-Macromaterial show the characteristic emission of the Er 3, ion. Moreover, the M/PL-Macromaterial possesses superparamagnetic properties at room temperature.

A novel bifunctional task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL), i.e. [trialkylmethylammonium][sec-nonylphenoxy acetate] ([A336] [CA-100]) was impregnated on intermediate polarized XAD-7 resin, and the prepared solvent impreganated resin (SIR) was studied for rare earth (RE) separation. Adsorption ability of the SIR was indicated to be obviously higher than that prepared by [A336][NO3] because of the functional anion of [A336][CA-100]. Adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm, separation and desorption of the SIR were also studied.

A new strategy for preparing ammonium-type ionic liquid (IL) by acid/base neutralization reaction was proposed. The method contributed to preparing hydroxide-based ammonium IL and resulting task specific ionic liquid (TSIL) with high purity using a low-costly and environment-friendly synthetic. route. Halide contamination in the prepared ILs could be markedly decreased than those prepared by well-established anion metathesis method. Moreover, some novel TSILs composed of cations and anions with big steric hindrances could be prepared by this method. Physicochemical properties of the bifunctional TSILs, i.e., density, water content, decomposition temperature, and munal solubility, were also studied in this article.

Hyperbranched polymers with numerous pendent norbornene functionalities have been synthesized via the radical polymerization of a novel asymmetrical divinyl monomer hearing a higher reactivity methacrylate group and it lower reactivity norbornene group. Mediated by a rapid reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) equilibrium, the concentration of polymeric chain radicals is decreased, and thus the gelation did not occur until higher monomer conversions (ca. 90%). An increase in reaction temperature call also significantly promote the formation of the hyperbranched structure owing to the decreased stability of the intermediate radicals derived from the norbornene group, which was confirmed by a model copolymerization system of two single vinyl monomers with similar structures to the vinyl groups in the asymmetrical divinyl monomer. Furthermore, Tri-SEC and conventional Sin-SEC as well as H-1 NMR.

The nonstoichimetric Ba0.92Y2.15F8.29 submicrospheres that piled up by nanoparticles have been prepared via a solution-based method in a hydrothermal environment. The size distribution of the submicrospheres could be tuned by varying the amount of BaCl2. The fluoride source NaBF4 plays an important role in the formation of the submicrospheres. The chelator ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid regulates the growth of the primary nanoparticles as well as the aggregated submicrospheres. The photoluminescence properties of different concentrations of Eu3+-doped Ba0.92Y2.15F8.29 were investigated and the results revealed that the 8% concentration of Eu3+ ions is the optimum doping concentration and the Y3+ ions occupy the site of inversion symmetry.

The bifunctional comonomer 4-(3-butenyl) styrene was used to synthesize crosslinked polystyrene microspheres (c-PS) with pendant butenyl groups on their surface via suspension copolymerization. Polyethylene chains were grafted onto the surface of c-PS microspheres (PS-g-PE) via ethylene copolymerizing with the pendant butenyl group on the surface of the c-PS microspheres under the catalysis of metallocene catalyst. The composition and morphology of the PS-g-PE microspheres were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. It is possible to control the content of PE grafted onto the surface of c-PS microspheres by varying the polymerization time or the initial quantity of pendant butenyl group on the surface of c-PS microspheres. Investigation on the morphology and crystallization behavior of grafted PE chains showed that different surface patterns could be formed under various crystallization conditions. Moreover, the crystallization temperature of PE chains grafted on the surface of c-PS microspheres was 6 degrees C higher than that of pure PE. The c-PS microspheres decorated by PE chains had a better compatibility with PE matrix.

The synthesis of a novel ABC ternary segregated H-shaped copolymer is described, of which a central poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chain is terminated on both sides by polystyrene (PS) and poly(tert-butylacrylate) (PtBA) chains. The synthetic procedure involves functionalization of PEG by 2-bromosuccinic anhydride followed by esterification of 1,6-hexanediol, which gives its ends the bifunctional nature that allows sequential growth of two PS, then two PtBA arms via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The resulting segregated H-shaped copolymers were characterization by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). All these copolymers were affirmed to have well-defined structures and narrow molecular weight distributions.
