The study evaluated the energy balance of the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) production system in the region of Marilia-SP. There were analyzed the "inputs" of energy originated from biological, fossil, and industrial sources, and the "output" of energy in the form of fruits produced per unit area, as well as five energy indicators. The phytotechnical indices considered were: planting in February (seedling in tubes), production cycle: 18 months, and yield: 20 t/ha. The input energy totaled 173,707.86 MJ/ha. The most representative items corresponded to industrial indirect energy (38%) and to biological (34%). Chemical fertilizers and pesticides accounted for 65% and 31% of indirect energy industry, respectively. The activity generated 391,800.00 MJ per cycle/ha, and the culture productivity, 0.12 MJ/kg. The efficiency of the culture was 2.26. The net cultural energy totaled 218,092.15 MJ/ha. The energy balance was positive (126,050.23 MJ/ha). Energy efficiency was favorable, with a value of 3.64. The direct power consumption of fossil origin is significant in the system evaluated, but it still allows the production of the yellow passion fruit in an environmentally sustainable way.

ABSTRACT Most plants suffer diseases caused by fungi. Orchidaceae is one of the threatened groups with many endangered species. Included into the most important problems in plant health is Botrytis cinerea, a cosmopolitan pathogen which causes major diseases in many plants of agronomic interest such as fruits, vegetables, planthouses accessions and ornamental plants (Jarvis, 1977; Elad et al, 2007). The genus Botrytis is one of the most widely and disseminated fungi. The genus contains 22 species (Hennebert 1973; Yohalem et al, 2003) and a hybrid (B. allii) (Yohalem & Alabama, 2003) linked to the sexual stages of a large number of specific hosts (Beever & Weds, 2000); infects over 200 different plant species (Williamson et al., 2007). Due to the importance of this pathogen, a study of morphological and molecular characterization of the fungus was carried out. Fungi samples were isolated from orchid plants grown in greenhouse conditions, vegetables and fruits with signs of necrosis, blight and rottening. To establish the best conditions for pathogenicity, behavioral characteristics of the fungus were studied through the analysis of morphological characteristics (presence of sclerotia, conidia size, sexual structures in vitro) and mycelial growth at different temperatures. To complete the characterization of the fungi, a molecular study was performed via the analysis of ribosomal ITS1-ITS4 region. Two different species were identified: Botrytis cinerea and Botrytis fabiopsis (known by specificity to Vicia faba). B. fabiopsis was isolated from a plant of the genus Pelargonium. A phylogenetic analysis was carried out to compare these two species leading to the conclusion that B. fabiopsis is closely related to B. cinerea and B. elliptica, but distantly related to B. fabae. The populations of Botrytis isolates were also analyzed. Three pairs of microsatellite primers with high percentages of polymorphism were selected. A similarity analysis showed three groups of populations of B. cinerea, including Botrytis fabiopsis. The genetic differentiation was not significant among the populations of isolates from orchids and vegetables; genetic differences were very low, suggesting that the specificity of Botrytis species is not given by the hosts.

Inclusions of sp-hybridised, trans-polyacetylene [trans-(CH)x] and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) chains are revealed using resonant Raman scattering (RRS) investigation of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films in the near IR – UV range. The RRS spectra of trans-(CH)x core Ag modes and the PPV CC-H phenylene mode are found to transform and disperse as the laser excitation energy ћωL is increased from near IR through visible to UV, whereas sp-bonded inclusions only become evident in UV. This is attributed to ћωL probing of trans-(CH)x chain inhomogeneity and the distribution of chains with varying conjugation length; for PPV to the resonant probing of phelynene ring disorder; and for sp segments, to ћωL probing of a local band gap of end-terminated polyynes. The IR spectra analysis confirmed the presence of sp, trans-(CH)x and PPV inclusions. The obtained RRS results for a-C:H denote differentiation between the core Ag trans-(CH)x modes and the PPV phenylene mode. Furthermore, it was found that at various laser excitation energies the changes in Raman spectra features for trans-(CH)x segments included in an amorphous carbon matrix are the same as in bulk trans-polyacetylene. The latter finding can be used to facilitate identification of trans-(CH)x in the spectra of complex carbonaceous materials.

Abstract Neopolycystus sp. is the only primary egg parasitoid associated with the pest beetle Paropsis atomaria in subtropical eucalypt plantations, but its impact on its host populations is unknown. The simplified ecosystem represented by the plantation habitat, lack of interspecific competition for host and parasitoid, and the multivoltinism of the host population makes this an ideal system for quantifying the direct and indirect effects of egg parasitism, and hence, effects on host population dynamics. Within-, between- and overall-egg-batch parasitism rates were determined at three field sites over two field seasons, and up to seven host generations. The effect of exposure time (egg batch age), host density proximity to native forest and water sources on egg parasitism rates was also tested. Neopolycystus sp. exerts a significant influence on P. atomaria populations in Eucalyptus cloeziana. plantations in south-eastern Queensland, causing the direct (13%) and indirect (15%) mortality of almost one-third of all eggs in the field. Across seasons and generations, 45% of egg batches were parasitised, with a within-batch parasitism rate of around 30%. Between-batch parasitism increased up to 5–6 days after oviposition in the field, although within-batch parasitism rates generally did not. However, there were few apparent patterns to egg parasitism, with rates often varying significantly between sites and seasons.
