A new accelerating cosmology driven only by baryons plus cold dark matter (CDM) is proposed in the framework of general relativity. In this scenario the present accelerating stage of the Universe is powered by the negative pressure describing the gravitationally-induced particle production of cold dark matter particles. This kind of scenario has only one free parameter and the differential equation governing the evolution of the scale factor is exactly the same of the Lambda CDM model. For a spatially flat Universe, as predicted by inflation (Omega(dm) + Omega(baryon) = 1), it is found that the effectively observed matter density parameter is Omega(meff) = 1 - alpha, where alpha is the constant parameter specifying the CDM particle creation rate. The supernovae test based on the Union data (2008) requires alpha similar to 0.71 so that Omega(meff) similar to 0.29 as independently derived from weak gravitational lensing, the large scale structure and other complementary observations.

A new species of Amphisbaena is described from Fazenda Caraibas, municipality of Mucuge, state of Bahia, Brazil, in the northern portion of the Serra do Espinhaco. The new species is a small amphisbaenian without precloacal pores, 210-213 body annuli, 12-13 tail annuli without evident autotomic site, and 14 dorsal and 14-15 ventral segments per annuli at midbody. The striking difference of this form is the presence of small tubercles on the dorsal region of its tail. This feature is unique among its congeners, although Rhineura floridana, a North American amphisbaenian, has tubercles on its tail. We suggest that the presence of tubercles on the tail of Amphisbaena sp. nov. and Rhineura floridana has arisen independently.

Objectives: In the present study, a novel pathway by which palmilate potentiates glucose-induced insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells was investigated. Methods: Groups of freshly isolated islets were incubated in 10 mM glucose with palmitate, LY294002, wortmannin, and fumonism B I for measurement of insulin secretion by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Also, phosphorylation and content of AKT and PKC proteins were evaluated by immunoblotting. Results: Glucose plus palmitate and glucose plus LY294002 or wortmannin (PI3K inhibitors) increased glucose-induced insulin secretion by isolated pancreatic islets. Glucose at 10 mM induced AKT and PKC zeta/lambda phosphorylation. Palmitate (0.1 mM) abolished glucose stimulation of AKT and PKC zeta/lambda phosphorylation possibly through PI3K inhibition because both LY294002 (50 mu M) and wortmannin (100 nM) caused the same effect. The inhibitory effect of palmitate on glucose-induced AKT and PKC zeta/lambda phosphorylation and the stimulatory effect of palmitate on glucose-induced insulin secretion were not observed in the presence of fumonisin B1, all inhibitor of ceramide synthesis. Conclusions: These findings support the proposition that palmilate increases insulin release in the presence of 10 mM glucose by inhibiting PI3K activity through a mechanism that involves ceramide synthesis.

Experiments at RHIC have shown that in 200 GeV Au-Au collisions, the Lambda and (Lambda) over bar hyperons are produced with very small polarizations (Abelev et al., 2007) [1], almost consistent with zero. These results can be understood in terms of a model that we proposed (Barros and Hama, 2008) [2]. In this Letter, we show how this model may be applied in such collisions, and also will discuss the relation of our results with other models, in order to explain the experimental data. To comprehend the recent Brookhaven National Laboratory experiment E788 on (4)(Lambda)He, we have outlined a simple theoretical framework. based on the independent-particle shell model, for the one-nucleon-induced nonmesonic weak decay spectra. Basically, the shapes of all the spectra are tailored by the kinematics of the corresponding phase space, depending very weakly on the dynamics, which is gauged here by the one-meson-exchange potential. In spite of the straightforwardness of the approach a good agreement with data is achieved. This might be an indication that the final-state-interactions and the two-nucleon induced processes are not very important in the decay of this hypernucleus. We have also found that the pi + K exchange potential with soft vertex-form-factor cutoffs (Lambda(pi) approximate to 0.7 GeV, Lambda(K) approximate to 0.9 GeV), is able to account simultaneously for the available experimental data related to Gamma(p) and Gamma(n) for (4)(Lambda)H, (4)(Lambda)H, and (5)(Lambda)H. Systemic amyloid light-chain (LC) amyloidosis is a disease process characterized by the pathological deposition of monoclonal LCs in tissue. All LC subtypes are capable of fibril formation although lambda chains, particularly those belonging to the lambda 6 type, are overrepresented. Here, we report the thermodynamic and in vitro fibrillogenic properties of several mutants of the lambda 6 protein 6aJL2 in which Pro7 and/or His8 was substituted by Ser or Pro. The H8P and H8S mutants were almost as stable as the wildtype protein and were poorly fibrillogenic. In contrast, the P7S mutation decreased the thermodynamic stability of 6aJL2 and greatly enhanced its capacity to form amyloid-like fibrils in vitro. The crystal structure of the P7S mutant showed that the substitution induced both local and long-distance effects, such as the rearrangement of the V(L) (variable region of the light chain)-V(L) interface. This mutant crystallized in two orthorhombic polymorphs, P2(1)2(1)2(1) and C222(1). In the latter, a monomer that was not arranged in the typical Bence-Jones dimer was observed for the first time. Crystal-packing analysis of the C222(1) lattice showed the establishment of intermolecular beta-beta interactions that involved the N-terminus and beta-strand B and that these could be relevant in the mechanism of LC fibril formation. Our results strongly suggest that Pro7 is a key residue in the conformation of the N-terminal sheet switch motif and, through long-distance interactions, is also critically involved in the contacts that stabilized the V(L) interface in lambda 6 LCs. The motility of T cells depends on the dynamic spatial regulation of integrin-mediated adhesion and de-adhesion. Cathepsin X, a cysteine protease, has been shown to regulate T-cell migration by interaction with lymphocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1). LFA-1 adhesion to the ICAM-1 is controlled by the association of actin-binding proteins with the cytoplasmic tail of the beta(2) chain of LFA-1. Cleavage by cathepsin X of the amino acid residues S(769), E(768) and A(767) from the C-terminal of the beta(2) cytoplasmic tail of LFA-1 is shown to promote binding of the actin-binding protein alpha-actinin-1. Furthermore, cathepsin X overexpression reduced LFA-1 clustering and induced an intermediate affinity LFA-1 conformation that is known to associate with a-actinin-1. increased levels of intermediate affinity LFA-1 resulted in augmented cell spreading due to reduced attachment of T cells to the ICAM-1-coated surface. Gradual cleavage of LFA-1 by cathepsin X enables the transition between intermediate and high affinity LFA-1, an event that is crucial for effective T-cell migration.
Deciphering the role of the electrostatic interactions in the alpha-tropomyosin head-to-tail complex

Skeletal alpha-tropomyosin (Tm) is a dimeric coiled-coil protein that forms linear assemblies under low ionic strength conditions in vitro through head-to-tail interactions. A previously published NMR structure of the Tin head-to-tail complex revealed that it is formed by the insertion of the N-terminal coiled-coil of one molecule into a cleft formed by the separation of the helices at the C-terminus of a second molecule. To evaluate the contribution of charged residues to complex stability, we employed single and double-mutant Tm fragments in which specific charged residues were changed to alanine in head-to-tail binding assays, and the effects of the mutations were analyzed by thermodynamic double-mutant cycles and protein-protein docking. The results show that residues K5, K7, and D280 are essential to the stability of the complex. Though D2, K6, D275, and H276 are exposed to the solvent and do not participate in intermolecular contacts in the NMR structure, they may contribute to head-to-tail complex stability by modulating the stability of the helices at the Tm termini.

Among lampyrids, intraspecific sexual communication is facilitated by spectral correspondence between visual sensitivity and bioluminescence emission from the single lantern in the tail. Could a similar strategy be utilized by the elaterids (click beetles), which have one ventral abdominal and two dorsal prothoracic lanterns? Spectral sensitivity [S(lambda)] and bioluminescence were investigated in four Brazilian click beetle species Fulgeochlizus bruchii, Pyrearinus termitilluminans, Pyrophorus punctatissimus and P. divergens, representing three genera. In addition, in situ microspectrophotometric absorption spectra were obtained for visual and screening pigments in P. punctatissimus and P. divergens species. In all species, the electroretinographic S(lambda) functions showed broad peaks in the green with a shoulder in the near-ultraviolet, suggesting the presence of short- and long-wavelength receptors in the compound eyes. The long-wavelength receptor in Pyrophorus species is mediated by a P540 rhodopsin in conjunction with a species-specific screening pigment. A correspondence was found between green to yellow bioluminescence emissions and its broad S(lambda) maximum in each of the four species. It is hypothesized that in elaterids, bioluminescence of the abdominal lantern is an optical signal for intraspecifc sexual communication, while the signals from the prothoracic lanterns serve to warn predators and may also provide illumination in flight.

In the present work, nanocomposites of polyaniline (PANI) and layered alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2).H2O (alpha-ZrP) were prepared using two different approaches: (i) the in situ aniline polymerization in the presence of the layered inorganic material and (ii) the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly using an aqueous solution of the polycation emeraldine salt (ES-PANI) and a dispersion of exfoliated negative slabs of alpha-ZrP. These materials were characterized spectroscopically using mainly resonance Raman scattering at four exciting radiations and electronic absorption in the UV-VIS-NIR region. Structural and textural characterizations were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The polymer obtained by the in situ aniline polymerization is located primarily in the external surface of the inorganic material although aniline monomers were intercalated between alpha-ZrP interlayer regions before oxidative polymerization. Through resonance Raman spectroscopy, it was observed that the formed polymer has semiquinone units (ES-PANI) and also azo bonds (-N = N-), showing that this method results in a polymer with a different structure from the usual ""head-to-tail"" ES-PANI. The LBL assembly of pre-formed ES-PANI and exfoliated alpha-ZrP particles produces homogeneous films with reproducible deposition from layer to layer, up to 20 bilayers. Resonance Raman (lambda(0) = 632.8 nm) spectrum of PANI/ZrP LBL film shows an enhancement in the intensity of the polaronic band at 1333 cm(-1) (nu C-N center dot+) and the decrease of the band intensity at 1485 cm(-1) compared to bulk ES-PANI. Its UV-VIS-NIR spectrum presents an absorption tail in the NIR region assigned to delocalized free charge carrier. These spectroscopic features are characteristic of highly conductive secondary doped PANI suggesting that polymeric chains in PANI/ZrP LBL film have a more extended conformation than in bulk ES-PANI.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi mostrar modelagens alternativas à tradicional maneira de se apurar o risco de mercado para ativos financeiros brasileiros. Procurou-se cobrir o máximo possível de fatores de risco existentes no Brasil; para tanto utilizamos as principais proxies para instrumentos de Renda Fixa. Em momentos de volatilidade, o gerenciamento de risco de mercado é bastante criticado por trabalhar dentro de modelagens fundamentadas na distribuição normal. Aqui reside a maior contribuição do VaR e também a maior crítica a ele. Adicionado a isso, temos um mercado caracterizado pela extrema iliquidez no mercado secundário até mesmo em certos tipos de títulos públicos federais. O primeiro passo foi fazer um levantamento da produção acadêmica sobre o tema, seja no Brasil ou no mundo. Para a nossa surpresa, pouco, no nosso país, tem se falado em distribuições estáveis aplicadas ao mercado financeiro, seja em gerenciamento de risco, precificação de opções ou administração de carteiras. Após essa etapa, passamos a seleção das variáveis a serem utilizadas buscando cobrir uma grande parte dos ativos financeiros brasileiros. Assim, deveríamos identificar a presença ou não da condição de normalidade para, aí sim, realizarmos as modelagens das medidas de risco, VaR e ES, para os ativos escolhidos, As condições teóricas e práticas estavam criadas: demanda de mercado (crítica ao método gausiano bastante difundido), ampla cobertura de ativos (apesar do eventual questionamento da liquidez), experiência acadêmica e conhecimento internacional (por meio de detalhado e criterioso estudo da produção sobre o tema nos principais meios). Analisou-se, desta forma, quatro principais abordagens para o cálculo de medidas de risco sendo elas coerentes (ES) ou não (VaR). É importante mencionar que se trata de um trabalho que poderá servir de insumo inicial para trabalhos mais grandiosos, por exemplo, aqueles que incorporarem vários ativos dentro de uma carteira de riscos lineares ou, até mesmo, para ativos que apresentem risco não-direcionais.

O crescimento experimentado pela indústria do software nas últimas décadas, trouxe consigo o aumento das exigências do mercado. É exigido das organizações de software, que os sistemas sejam construídos de acordo com prazo e custos determinados, obedecendo-se certos padrões de qualidade. Para atender tais exigências e assim obter o diferencial competitivo, tornou-se necessário investir no processo de desenvolvimento de software, dada a relação cada vez mais evidente entre a qualidade do produto de software e a eficiência e eficácia do processo de desenvolvimento adotado. Uma estratégia na busca pela maturidade em termos de processos é a definição e adoção de um processo único a ser seguido em todos os projetos de uma organização, denominado processo padrão. Levando-se em consideração a singularidade de cada novo projeto de software, é natural presumir que o processo padrão tenha de ser adaptado para as necessidades específicas de cada situação, de forma a ser aceito, ter seu uso maximizado e garantir a qualidade do software a ser produzido. Este trabalho apresenta, assim, o APSEE-Tail, um modelo para apoiar o engenheiro de processos na tarefa de adaptar o processo padrão de uma organização de software para as particularidades de cada um de seus projetos, possibilitando maior efetividade e eficiência no uso do mesmo. Sua abordagem de adaptação é livre, orientada à atividades e baseada no raciocínio, através da combinação das técnicas de interpretação de regras e CBR (Case Based Reasoning), sobre o conhecimento necessário. Tal conhecimento, neste trabalho, é agrupado em três categorias: diretrizes de adaptação do processo padrão, tipos de característica usados para definir os projetos de software e informações sobre adaptações realizadas anteriormente. Os diferentes componentes envolvidos na definição do APSEE-Tail foram especificados algebricamente, o que constituiu uma base semântica de alto nível de abstração e possibilitou a construção de um protótipo, implementado no ADS (Ambiente de Desenvolvimento de Software) Prosoft-Java e fracamente acoplado ao APSEE, um ambiente de engenharia de software centrado no processo também prototipado no Prosoft-Java, tornando-se assim parte do meta-processo adotado pelo mesmo. O texto apresenta ainda alguma fundamentação teórica sobre a área de Adaptação de Processos de Software, considerações sobre as abordagens pesquisadas, enfatizando as que mais influenciaram o APSEE-Tail, e um exemplo de aplicação do protótipo construído. Por fim, são apresentadas as contribuições e limitações da proposta, na visão do autor, bem como os trabalhos futuros vislumbrados.
