El idioma calmuc es una lengua hablada por los calmucos en Rusia, China y Mongolia. Pertenece a las lenguas mongólicas. El sistema de escritura mongol es mixto y procede del kalika. El sentido de la escritura es de arriba hacia abajo comenzando por la izquierda. Los kalmucos adaptaron el alfabeto mongol a su lengua en 1648, bajo el lama Zaya Pandita ("Promotora Española de Lingüística (Proel)").
