Social Support, Social and Temporal Comparisons Protect Well-Being and Health between 45 and 70 Years Old in Four Urban Communities

This study examined the impact of social support and of temporal and social comparisons on well-being and selfreported health in four capital cities: Paris, Berlin, Moscow and Beijing. Based on the lifespan control theory, an integrative model investigating the influence of these coping strategies, especially on the psychological regulation of health losses, was tested on 1141 respondents aged 45 to 70 years by using structural equation modelling with multigroup comparisons. Results indicated a good fit of the model to participants' responses. In all contexts, physical weaknesses favoured the use of social and temporal comparison strategies rather than social support. Moreover, across the cities, coping strategies were oriented more toward protecting self-evaluation of health than toward enhancement of well-being. Social comparison decreased the impact of physical weaknesses on health evaluation and on well-being in the four cities, but to a lesser extent in China. Results are discussed regarding the normative cross-cultural aspects that intervene during ageing in the four urban contexts.

The Catalan reception of the 1966 manifestos by Robert Venturi and Aldo Rossi marks the scenario of a breakup: while North America debates about the architectural shape as a linguistic structure, Italy dips its roots in the Modern Movement tradition as an origin for a new temporal and ideological architectural dimension. The first contacts between Rossi and Spain verify this search and allow the Italian to construct common itineraries with some architects from Barcelona. From these exchanges the 2C group will be born, taking part on typical vanguardist mechanisms: they will publish the magazine, 2C. The construction of the city (1972-1985), they will attend the XV Triennale di Milano in 1973 with the Torres Clavé Plan (1971) and the Aldo Rossi + 21 Spanish architects exhibition (1975) while he will organize the three issues of the Seminarios Internacionales de Arquitectura Contemporánea (S.I.AC.) which took place in Santiago, Sevilla and Barcelona between 1976 and 1980. In front of the unfolding of the firsts, the American contacts of Federico Correa, Oriol Bohigas, Lluís Domènech and the PER studio or the teaching work of Rafael Moneo from Barcelona since 1971, allow to draw replica itineraries with the foundation of the magazine Arquitecturas Bis (1974-1985), the organization of the meetings between international publications such as Lotus and Oppositions in Cadaqués (1975) and New York (1977), while stablishing exchanges with members of the Five Architects. Replicas that in 1976 conduct the initial ideological affirmations between Rossi and the 2C group towards irreconcilable distancing. Periodically, during petroleum shortages, vegetable oils and their derivatives have been proposed as alternatives to petroleum diesel fuel. Different approaches have been proposed, including the use of pure vegetable oils (or blends) or their derivatives. Indeed, the use of fatty-acid methyl or ethyl esters (usually known as "biodiesel") produced by alcoholysis of triacylglycerides or esterification of fatty acids was initially proposed in Belgium 70 years ago, when the first world patent was deposited. Recently, foreign dependence on diesel fuel and the petroleum crisis have increased the discussion in Brazil on starting to use alternatives to diesel fuel, being biodiesel the alternative of choice for a large petroleum diesel substitution program.

Cardiac disease in systemic lupus erythematosus: prospective study of 70 patients.

A prospective two dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic study of 70 consecutive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 40 controls was carried out. Forty patients (57%) were found to have echocardiographic disturbance. Valvular abnormalities were detected in 31 patients (44%) and in only two controls (5%). Mitral valve abnormalities were the most common findings (23/70 (33%)) with mild or moderate regurgitation the most frequent lesion (16% and 9% respectively). Three patients (4%) had a morphological echocardiographic pattern suggestive of non-infective verrucous vegetations affecting the mitral valve. No patient had haemodynamically significant clinical valve disease. Pericardial effusion was identified in 19 patients (27%), of whom 14 had mild and clinically silent disease. Myocardial abnormalities were found in 14 patients (20%), but clinical features of myocardial dysfunction were present in only one. Patients with antiphospholipid antibodies were found to have an increased prevalence of endocardial lesions, mainly valvular regurgitation. It is concluded that the inclusion of echocardiography in a study protocol of patients with SLE can identify an important subset of patients with cardiac abnormalities, many of which are clinically silent. In addition, the association of antiphospholipid antibodies with endocardial lesions suggests that these antibodies may have a prominent role in the pathogenetic mechanisms of heart valve disease in SLE.
