Analytical results of 19 amino acid analyses from Unit 3.1 of sediment core CRP-1 (Table 1)

Amino acid-based geochronological analyses were carried out on fossil mollusc shell and foraminifera from Unit 3.1, Cape Roberts Project core CRP-1. Ratios of D-alloIsoleucine to L-Isoleucine (D/L) were measured from 19 fossil samples using cation exchange High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods. Preliminary interpretation of these results suggest that Unit 3.1 contains carbonate fossils having multiple ages. The interpreted ages have a bimodal distribution between ~220 Ka (Quaternary) and ~2.4 Ma (Pliocene). However, these results lack a comprehensive regional and taxonomic context for amino acid studies in Antarctica and therefore should be regarded as preliminary age estimates of fossil shell ages.

Effect of the synthetic coumarin, ethyl 2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylate, on activity of Crotalus durissus ruruima sPLA2 as well as on edema and platelet aggregation induced by this factor

We show that ethyl 2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylate (EOCC), a synthetic coumarin, irreversibly inhibits phospholipase A(2) (sPLA2) from Crotalus durissus ruruima venom (sPLA2r) with an IC(50) of 3.1 +/- 0.06 nmol. EOCC strongly decreased the V(max) and K(m), and it virtually abolished the enzyme activity of sPLA2r as well as sPLA2s from other sources. The edema induced by 5PLA2r + EOCC was less than that induced by 5PLA2r treated with p-bromophenacyl bromide, which was more efficient at neutralizing the platelet aggregation activity of native 5PLA2r. Native 5PLA2r induced platelet aggregation of 91.54 +/- 9.3%, and sPLA2r +/- EOCC induced a platelet aggregation of 18.56 +/- 6.5%. EOCC treatment also decreased the myotoxic effect of sPLA2r. Mass spectrometry showed that EOCC formed a stable complex with sPLA2r, which increased the mass of native 5PLA2r from 14,299.34 da to 14,736.22 Da. Moreover, the formation of this complex appeared to be involved in the loss of 5PLA2r activity. Our results strongly suggest that EOCC can be used as a pharmacological agent against the 5PLA2 in Crotalus durissus sp. venom as well as other sPLA2s. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gestão da Assistência Farmacêutica: módulo 4: unidade 3: programação, aquisição, armazenamento e distribuição de medicamentos

A eficiência do gerenciamento de estoques de medicamentos é fundamental para suprir as necessidades de medicamentos das instituições de saúde, além de colaborar também para diminuir gastos. Baseado nisso, a proposta de conteúdo visa detalhar as etapas de programação, aquisição, distribuição e armazenamento de medicamentos. Inicialmente, o conteúdo discutirá como desenvolver a atividade de programação nos serviço público, detalhando os diferentes métodos para este fim (consumo histórico, perfil epidemiológico, oferta de serviços, consumo ajustado...). Na sequência, serão abordadas as etapas da aquisição dos medicamentos, de modo a esclarecer os trâmites burocráticos desse processo. E, por fim, serão apresentados os cuidados no armazenamento e na distribuição, para evitar perdas e organizar o estoque de medicamentos, bem como o manejo dos resíduos de saúde. Ao final do desta unidade, espera-se que o especializando compreenda a importância do que foi discutido, para o gerenciamento da assistência farmacêutica.

1-(2-furoyl)-3-(1-naphthyl)thiourea

In the title compound, C(16)H(12)N(2)O(2)S, the carbonylthiourea group forms dihedral angles of 75.4 (1) and 13.1 (2)degrees, respectively, with the naphthalene ring system and furan ring. The molecule adopts a trans-cis configuration with respect to the positions of the furoyl and naphthyl groups relative to the S atom across the thiourea C-N bonds. This geometry is stabilized by an N-H center dot center dot center dot center dot O intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds, forming centrosymmetric dimers which are interlinked through C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

Reverse Microemulsion Synthesis, Structure, and Luminescence of Nanosized REPO(4):Ln(3+) (RE = La, Y, Gd, or Yb, and Ln = Eu, Tm, or Er)

A surfactant-mediated solution route for the obtainment of nanosized rare-earth orthophosphates of different compositions (LaPO(4):Eu(3+), (Y,Gd)PO(4):Eu(3+),LaPO(4):Tm(3+), YPO(4):Tm(3+), and YbPO(4):Er(3+)) is presented, and the implications of the morphology control on the solids properties are discussed. The solids are prepared in water-in-heptane microemulsions, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 1-butanol as the surfactant and cosurfactant; the alteration of the starting microemulsion composition allows the obtainment of similar to 30 nm thick nanorods with variable length. The morphology and the structure of the solids were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy and through powder X-ray diffractometry; dynamic light scattering and thermal analyses were also performed. The obtained materials were also characterized through vibrational (FTIR) and luminescence spectroscopy (emission/excitation, luminescence lifetimes, chromaticity, and quantum efficiency), where the red, blue, and upconversion emissions of the prepared phosphors were evaluated.

La ópera como integración de las artes : LSP 3.1

Embarcarse en la aventura de componer una ópera y llegar a materializarla con los mínimos recursos requiere de mucha imaginación e ilusión, de un trabajo constante y meditado, de un buen equipo de colaboradores, de fe ciega en que todo acabará funcionando y de lo más básico: un buen libreto. La serva padrona de Pergolesi nos demuestra cómo una historia sencilla y de recursos austeros puede llegar a ser tan tremendamente fresca, divertida y entretenida. Este intermezzo representará el punto de partida de una creación en la que la escena teatral y el discurso musical se fundirán de manera indivisible. Al fin y al cabo, la creación de una ópera supone asimilar desde buen principio que en ella convergen diferentes artes de índole muy diversa. Conseguir trabajar dentro de este marco de encuentro multidisciplinar es un privilegio que, sin duda, se debe aprovechar.
