Hip height, body condition, subcutaneous fat, eye muscle area, percentage Bos taurus, fetal age and diet digestibility data were collected at 17 372 assessments on 2181 Brahman and tropical composite (average 28% Brahman) female cattle aged between 0.5 and 7.5 years of age at five sites across Queensland. The study validated the subtraction of previously published estimates of gravid uterine weight to correct liveweight to the non-pregnant status. Hip height and liveweight were linearly related (Brahman: P<0.001, R-2 = 58%; tropical composite P<0.001, R-2 = 67%). Liveweight varied by 12-14% per body condition score (5-point scale) as cows differed from moderate condition (P<0.01). Parallel effects were also found due to subcutaneous rump fat depth and eye muscle area, which were highly correlated with each other and body condition score (r = 0.7-0.8). Liveweight differed from average by 1.65-1.66% per mm of rump fat depth and 0.71-0.76% per cm(2) of eye muscle area (P<0.01). Estimated dry matter digestibility of pasture consumed had no consistent effect in predicting liveweight and was therefore excluded from final models. A method developed to estimate full liveweight of post-weaning age female beef cattle from the other measures taken predicted liveweight to within 10 and 23% of that recorded for 65 and 95% of cases, respectively. For a 95% chance of predicted group average liveweight (body condition score used) being within 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1% of actual group average liveweight required 23, 36, 62, 137 and 521 females, respectively, if precision and accuracy of measurements matches that used in the research. Non-pregnant Bos taurus female cattle were calculated to be 10-40% heavier than Brahmans at the same hip height and body condition, indicating a substantial conformational difference. The liveweight prediction method was applied to a validation population of 83 unrelated groups of cattle weighed in extensive commercial situations on 119 days over 18 months (20 917 assessments). Liveweight prediction in the validation population exceeded average recorded liveweight for weigh groups by an average of 19 kg (similar to 6%) demonstrating the difficulty of achieving accurate and precise animal measurements under extensive commercial grazing conditions.

The 1H and 13C chemical shifts, characteristic vibrational frequencies and force constants for some substituted azolidines are correlated with the results of the CNDO/2 calculations. The influence of the exo and endo heteroatoms on the electronic structure of the heterocyclic ring are discussed.

Schoeffler has derived continuously equivalent networks in the nodal-admittance domain. The letter derives a corresponding result in state space that combines the usefulness of Schoeffler's result and the power of the state-variable approach.

A new set of equations describing completely the optical phenomena in a model involving continuous rotation of secondary axes and secondary principal-stress differences are obtained. These are solved by Peano-Baker method using experimentally determined characteristic parameters for several wavelengths of light. Experimental verifications are obtained for a rectangular bar subjected to combined torsion and tension. Paper was presented at Third SESA International Congress on Experimental Mechanics held in Los Angeles, CA on May 13–18, 1973.

A universal relation between the cohesive energy and the particle size has been predicted based on the liquid-drop model. The universal relation is well supported by other theoretical models and the available experimental data. The universal relations for intermediate size range as well as for particles with very few atoms are discussed. A comparison of onset temperature of evaporation also establishes a universal relation.

In quantum theory, symmetry has to be defined necessarily in terms of the family of unit rays, the state space. The theorem of Wigner asserts that a symmetry so defined at the level of rays can always be lifted into a linear unitary or an antilinear antiunitary operator acting on the underlying Hilbert space. We present two proofs of this theorem which are both elementary and economical. Central to our proofs is the recognition that a given Wigner symmetry can, by post-multiplication by a unitary symmetry, be taken into either the identity or complex conjugation. Our analysis often focuses on the behaviour of certain two-dimensional subspaces of the Hilbert space under the action of a given Wigner symmetry, but the relevance of this behaviour to the larger picture of the whole Hilbert space is made transparent at every stage.

In the absence of specific treatable mutations, platinum-based chemotherapy remains the gold standard of treatment for lung cancer patients. However, 5-year survival rates remain poor due to the development of resistance and eventual relapse. Resistance to conventional cytotoxic therapies presents a significant clinical challenge in the treatment of this disease. The cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis suggests that tumors are arranged in a hierarchical structure, with the presence of a small subset of stem-like cells that are responsible for tumor initiation and growth. This CSC population has a number of key properties such as the ability to asymmetrically divide, differentiate and self-renew, in addition to having increased intrinsic resistance to therapy. While cytotoxic chemotherapy kills the bulk of tumor cells, CSCs are spared and have the ability to recapitulate the heterogenic tumor mass. The identification of lung CSCs and their role in tumor biology and treatment resistance may lead to innovative targeted therapies that may ultimately improve clinical outcomes in lung cancer patients. This review will focus on lung CSC markers, their role in resistance and their relevance as targets for future therapies.

Peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase cleaves the ester bond between tRNA and the attached peptide in peptidyl-tRNA in order to avoid the toxicity resulting from its accumulation and to free the tRNA available for further rounds in protein synthesis. The structure of the enzyme from Mycobacteritan tuberculosis has been determined in three crystal forms. This structure and the structure of the enzyme frorn Escherichia coli in its crystal differ substantially on account of the binding of the C terminus of the E. coli enzyme to the peptide-binding site of a neighboring molecule in the crystal. A detailed examination of this difference led to an elucidation of the plasticity of the binding site of the enzyme. The peptide-binding site of the enzyme is a cleft between the body, of the molecule and a polypepticle Y stretch involving a loop and a helix. This stretch is in the open conformation when the enzyme is in the free state as in the crystals of M. tuberculosis peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase. Furthermore, there is no physical continuity between the tRNA and the peptide-binding sites. The molecule in the E. coli crystal mimics the peptide-bound enzyme molecule. The peptide stretch referred to earlier now closes on the bound peptide. Concurrently, a channel connecting the tRNA and the peptide-binding site opens primarily through the concerted movement of two residues. Thus, the crystal structure of M. tuberculosis peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase when compared with the crystal structure of the E. coli enzyme, leads to a model of structural changes associated with enzyme action on the basis of the plasticity of the molecule. The dipole moments of di-p-tolyl selenide (1.74 D), di-p-tolyl selenide (1.00 D), di-m-tolyl selenide (1.66 D), di-p-anisyl selenide (2.35 D) and di-p-tolyl selenium dichloride (3.69 D) have been determined in benzene at 35°. The results are analysed in terms of mesomeric effects and internal rotation in these systems. The dipole moments of a few aliphatic selenides have been theoretically evaluated.
