Transmisión bipolar: la difusión de la arquitectura moderna latinoamericana en España (1949-1968)

En las décadas de 1950 y 1960, pese a las aparentes dificultades de comunicación con el exterior, la arquitectura española miró hacia fuera constantemente. La potencia de la arquitectura moderna latinoamericana, junto a las diferencias instrumentales y geográficas, la hacían difícilmente importable a un contexto materialmente escaso y excesivamente tradicional. Sin embargo, dicha producción interesó y se difundió notablemente durante ambas décadas. Este artículo pretende varias cosas a la vez. Por una parte, proporcionar una panorámica global sobre difusión de la arquitectura latinoamericana fuera de su continente. Para ello nos serviremos básicamente del que probablemente fue el medio más potente con el que contaron: las revistas especializadas de arquitectura. Pero también pretende ser una llamada de atención hacia las publicaciones periódicas españolas, mucho menos conocidas que otras europeas pero, sin embargo, repletas de buena arquitectura.

Electrodynamic tethers for exploration of Jupiter and its icy moons

Use of electrodynamic bare tethers in exploring the Jovian system by tapping its rotational energy for power and propulsion is studied. The position of perijove and apojove in elliptical orbits, relative to the synchronous orbit at 2.24 times Jupiter’s radius, is exploited to conveniently make the induced Lorentz force to be drag or thrust, while generating power, and navigating the system. Capture and evolution to a low elliptical orbit near Jupiter, and capture into low circular orbits at moons Io and Europa are discussed.

SEMEANDO A CIDADANIA: um estudo sobre a formação e a atuação de educadoras sociais em prol do letramento

Esta dissertação de Mestrado tem como objetivo desvelar a prática pedagógica de educadoras leigas atuantes na educação não-formal e a práxis educacional que elas desempenham em prol da alfabetização letrada. Ao abordarmos os três temas que regem este estudo educação não-formal, formação de educadoras leigas e alfabetização letrada versamos sobre os resultados obtidos em espaços de educação não-formais, estabelecendo um contraponto: até quando o não-formal pode ser considerado um espaço de educação aquém da escola? Foi realizada uma pesquisa empírica no Projeto Sementinha da cidade de Santo André/ SP, através da observação da práxis educativa de sete educadoras, de entrevistas, coma exsecretária de Educação que implantou o Projeto na cidade; com os Coordenadores Gerais do Projeto Sementinha; com quatro das sete educadoras e ainda, um levantamento bibliográfico sobre o surgimento do Projeto na cidade de Curvelo; MG. Até o momento, as análises realizadas apontaram para o desenvolvimento de práticas de letramento em diferentes momentos da atuação das educadoras e na formação cidadã e moral das crianças assistidas pelo Projeto na comunidade observada para a efetivação deste trabalho de pesquisa.(AU)

Outsourcing de sistemas de información: situación actual, evolución y tendencias

El objetivo de este trabajo es describir detalladamente cómo es el outsourcing de sistemas de información a través de los resultados de una encuesta realizada a las mayores empresas españolas. Se trata de un estudio longitudinal que aborda 12 años, ya que se contrastan los resultados actuales con los de 2 encuestas realizadas anteriormente en el mismo ámbito y por los mismos autores. Las conclusiones apuntan a un continuismo en la configuración del outsourcing y a un mayor grado de madurez en las características de los contratos.

Omics for Investigating Chitosan as an Antifungal and Gene Modulator

Chitosan is a biopolymer with a wide range of applications. The use of chitosan in clinical medicine to control infections by fungal pathogens such as Candida spp. is one of its most promising applications in view of the reduced number of antifungals available. Chitosan increases intracellular oxidative stress, then permeabilizes the plasma membrane of sensitive filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa and yeast. Transcriptomics reveals plasma membrane homeostasis and oxidative metabolism genes as key players in the response of fungi to chitosan. A lipase and a monosaccharide transporter, both inner plasma membrane proteins, and a glutathione transferase are main chitosan targets in N. crassa. Biocontrol fungi such as Pochonia chlamydosporia have a low content of polyunsaturated free fatty acids in their plasma membranes and are resistant to chitosan. Genome sequencing of P. chlamydosporia reveals a wide gene machinery to degrade and assimilate chitosan. Chitosan increases P. chlamydosporia sporulation and enhances parasitism of plant parasitic nematodes by the fungus. Omics studies allow understanding the mode of action of chitosan and help its development as an antifungal and gene modulator.

Injury and frequency of use of playground equipment in public schools and parks in Brisbane, Australia

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of use of play equipment in public schools and parks in Brisbane, Australia, and to estimate an annual rate of injury per use of equipment, overall and for particular types of equipment. Methods: Injury data on all children injured from playground equipment and seeking medical attention at the emergency department of either of the two children's hospitals in the City of Brisbane were obtained for the years 1996 and 1997. Children were observed at play on five different pieces of play equipment in a random sample of 16 parks and 16 schools in the City of Brisbane. Children injured in the 16 parks and schools were counted, and rates of injury and use were calculated. Results: The ranked order for equipment use in the 16 schools was climbing equipment (3762 uses), horizontal ladders (2309 uses), and slides (856 uses). Each horizontal ladder was used 2.6 times more often than each piece of climbing equipment. Each horizontal ladder was used 7.8 times more than each piece of climbing equipment in the sample of public parks. Slides were used 4.6 times more than climbing equipment in parks and 1.2 times more in public schools. The annual injury rate for the 16 schools and 16 parks under observation was 0.59/100000 and 0.26/100000 uses of equipment, respectively. Conclusions: This study shows that annual number of injuries per standardized number of uses could be used to determine the relative risk of particular pieces of playground equipment. The low overall rate of injuries/100000 uses of equipment in this study suggests that the benefit of further reduction of injury in this community may be marginal and outweigh the economic costs in addition to reducing challenging play opportunities.

Spillover: the empirical utilisation of the concept. An empirical review of the social scientific corpus between 2004-2014

In recent decades, spillover has become a highly influential concept which has led to the initiation of new theoretical and methodological approaches that are designed to understand how people attempt to reconcile their work and private lives. The very notion of spillover presupposes that these spheres are connected, since the people who move between them bring certain ‘less visible’ content with them such as cognitive or affective mental constructs, skills, behaviors, etc. This paper attempts to create fresh insight into the different areas, themes and methodologies related to how spillover has been addressed over the last ten years. Four main categories are discussed based on the 76 academic articles that were selected: (1) general spillover research, (2) job flexibility and spillover, (3) individual coping strategies, and (4) the spillover effect on the different genders. The final section of the paper provides a tentative synthesis of the main conclusions and findings from the examined papers.
