We report the synthesis and characterization of organic-inorganic hybrid materials: Zn-2-Al-LDHs (layered double hydroxides) containing 3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-propanoate and 7-(1H-pyrrol-l-yl)-heptanoate as the interlayer anions. The LDHs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method at constant pH followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were characterized by PXRD, C-13 CP-MAS NMR, TGA, and ESR. The basal spacing found by PXRD technique is coincident with the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. The solid state C-13 NMR showed that the interlayered anions remain identical after intercalation. ESR data suggest that the monomers connect each other in a limited number of guests when a thermal treatment is applied. The inorganic LDH sheets delay the temperature of degradation of the monomers. Wisdom's perturbative method is applied to the 5:2 and 7:3 resonances. Some comparisons with Yoshikawa's model are performed: for values of eccentricity up to about 0.3-0.4, agreement exists and it is better for 5:2 resonance. A clear difference between the cases 5:2 and 7:3 is observed : the former one, like in the case 3:1, can show significant variations of eccentricity, even starting from very small values, close to zero, while the latter seems to undergo such variations, but with initial eccentricity not less than a value near 0.1.

Wisdom's method is applied to 5 : 2 and 7 : 3 resonances. Comparisons with Yoshikawa's nontruncated model are performed: for moderate values of eccentricity, agreement is good, especially for the 5 : 2 resonance. A clear difference between the 5 : 2 and the 7 : 3 resonances is observed: the former (like the 3 : 1 resonance) can suffer significant variations of eccentricity, even starting from very small values close to 0, while the latter seems to undergo such variations but the minimum eccentricity cannot be less than a value near 0.1. In the 7 : 3 resonance, some chaotic motion trapped in a region of very small eccentricity is possible. This is in contrast with the 5 : 2 commensurability, since chaos in this case seems to be always related to significant variations of eccentricity. Recent calculations performed by Šidlichovskÿ using mapping techniques show agreement with the results presented here. © 1992.

Densities of layer 2 basalt recovered during the Deep Sea Drilling Project have been found to decrease steadily with age, a finding ascribed to progressive submarine weathering in the context of sea-floor spreading. The least-squares solution for 52 density measurements gives a rate of decrease in density of (Delta p)/(Delta t) = -0.0046 g per ccm m.y. = -16 percent per 100 m.y., which is in excellent agreement with earlier estimates based on observed chemical depletion rates of dredged oceanic basalt. Weathering of sea-floor basalt, should it penetrate to any considerable depth in layer 2, will decrease layer 2 seismic refraction velocities, act as a source of geothermal heat, and substantially influence the chemistry of sea water and the overlying column of sediment.

A spontaneous mutator strain of Escherichia coli (fpg mutY) was used to clone the OGG1 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which encodes a DNA glycosylase activity that excises 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-OxoG). E. coli (fpg mutY) was transformed by a yeast DNA library, and clones that showed a reduced spontaneous mutagenesis were selected. The antimutator activity was associated with pYSB10, an 11-kbp recombinant plasmid. Cell-free extracts of E. coli (fpg mutY) harboring pYSB10 possess an enzymatic activity that cleaves a 34-mer oligonucleotide containing a single 8-oxoG opposite a cytosine (8-OxoG/C). The yeast DNA fragment of 1.7 kbp that suppresses spontaneous mutagenesis and overproduces the 8-OxoG/C cleavage activity was sequenced and mapped to chromosome XIII. DNA sequencing identified an open reading frame, designated OGG1, which encodes a protein of 376 amino acids with a molecular mass of 43 kDa. The OGG1 gene was inserted in plasmid pUC19, yielding pYSB110. E. coli (fpg) harboring pYSB110 was used to purify the Ogg1 protein of S. cerevisiae to apparent homogeneity. The Ogg1 protein possesses a DNA glycosylase activity that releases 8-OxoG and 2,6-diamino-4-hydroxy-5-N-methylformamidopyrimidine. The Ogg1 protein preferentially incises DNA that contains 8-OxoG opposite cytosine (8-OxoG/C) or thymine (8-OxoG/T). In contrast, Ogg1 protein does not incise the duplex where an adenine is placed opposite 8-OxoG (8-OxoG/A). The mechanism of strand cleavage by Ogg1 protein is probably due to the excision of 8-OxoG followed by a beta-elimination at the resulting apurinic/apyrimidinic site.
