Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements from bis-cationic C16H33N+(CH3)(2)-(CH2)(3)-N+ (CH3)(2)C16H33 2Br(-) dimeric surfactant, referred to as 16-3-16, at different concentrations and temperatures, are reported. It is seen that micelles are disc-like for concentrations C = 2.5 and 10 mM at temperature T = 30 degrees C. At low concentration C = 0.5 mM micelles are rod-like. Similarly, there is a disc to rod-like transition of micelles on increasing the temperature. For C = 2.5 mM, micelles are rod-like at T = 45 and 70 degrees C.

The major cuticular hydrocarbons from the cane beetle species Antitrogus parvulus were deduced to be 4,6,8,10,16,18-hexa- and 4,6,8,10,16- pentamethyldocosanes 2 and 3, respectively. Isomers of 2,4,6,8-tetramethylundecanal 27, 36, and 37, derived from 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, were coupled with the phosphoranes 28 and 29 to furnish alkenes and, by reduction, diastereomers of 2 and 3. Chromatographic and spectroscopic comparisons confirmed 2 as either 6a or 6b and 3 as either 34a or 34b.

The suzukacillin fragments, Boc-Ala-Aib-Aib-Gln-Aib-Leu-Aib-Gly-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-Aib-OMe (14), Boc-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Aib-Gln-Aib-Leu-Aib-Gly-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-Aib-OMe (16G) and the completely apolar 16-residue peptide in which the glutamine residue has been replaced by alanine (16A) have been studied by 270 MHz 1H-HMR, in C2HCl3 and (C2H3)2SO solution. Intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded NH groups have been identified by temperature and solvent dependence of chemical shifts. Peptides 14 and 16A adopt folded 310 helical conformations stabilized by 11 and 13 hydrogen bonds, respectively. In peptide 16G there are 12 intramolecular hydrogen bonds, with the glycine NH being solvent-exposed, in contrast to 14 and 16A.

ON Saturday February 16, 1980 total solar eclipse Occurred for a period of 2-3 min in a belt of 135 km during the eclipse from 14'17 to 17'00 hrs across peninsular India. The city of Bangalore, being just outside this belt, had witnessed 92% eclipse for about 2. 1/2 min at the peak period of 15.44 hr at which time a temperature drop of 2' C and a considerable dimness of the light were experienced. In view of the interest in our laboratory on biochemical adaptation under conditions of environmental stress, we designed an experiment to study the possible changes in enzyme activities during the solar eclipse on February 16, 1980.

A study of the effect of N2 reservoir temperature on the small-signal gain in a downstream-mixing 16 μm CO2-N2 GDL is presented. It is shown that the small-signal gain decreases with the increase of N2 reservoir temperature. The conditions for reversing this trend are discussed and the results are presented in the form of graphs.

Effective and targeted conservation action requires detailed information about species, their distribution, systematics and ecology as well as the distribution of threat processes which affect them. Knowledge of reptilian diversity remains surprisingly disparate, and innovative means of gaining rapid insight into the status of reptiles are needed in order to highlight urgent conservation cases and inform environmental policy with appropriate biodiversity information in a timely manner. We present the first ever global analysis of extinction risk in reptiles, based on a random representative sample of 1500 species (16% of all currently known species). To our knowledge, our results provide the first analysis of the global conservation status and distribution patterns of reptiles and the threats affecting them, highlighting conservation priorities and knowledge gaps which need to be addressed urgently to ensure the continued survival of the world’s reptiles. Nearly one in five reptilian species are threatened with extinction, with another one in five species classed as Data Deficient. The proportion of threatened reptile species is highest in freshwater environments, tropical regions and on oceanic islands, while data deficiency was highest in tropical areas, such as Central Africa and Southeast Asia, and among fossorial reptiles. Our results emphasise the need for research attention to be focussed on tropical areas which are experiencing the most dramatic rates of habitat loss, on fossorial reptiles for which there is a chronic lack of data, and on certain taxa such as snakes for which extinction risk may currently be underestimated due to lack of population information. Conservation actions specifically need to mitigate the effects of human-induced habitat loss and harvesting, which are the predominant threats to reptiles.

A 16-µm CO2-N2 downstream-mixing gasdynamic laser, where a cold CO2 stream is mixed with a vibrationally excited N2 stream at the exit of the nozzle, is studied theoretically. The flow field is analyzed using a two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar and viscous flow model including appropriate finite-rate vibrational kinetic equations. The analysis showed that local small-signal gain up to 21.75 m−1 can be obtained for a N2 reservoir temperature of 2000 K and a velocity ratio of 1:1 between the CO2 and N2 mixing streams. A new analogue of graphene containing boron, carbon and nitrogen (BCN) has been obtained by the reaction of high-surface-area activated charcoal with a mixture of boric acid and urea at 900 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal the composition to be close to BCN. The X-ray diffraction pattern, high-resolution electron microscopy images and Raman spectrum indicate the presence of graphite-type layers with low sheet-to-sheet registry. Atomic force microscopy reveals the sample to consist of two to three layers of BCN, as in a few-layer graphene. BCN exhibits more electrical resistivity than graphene, but weaker magnetic features. BCN exhibits a surface area of 2911 m(2)g(-1), which is the highest value known for a BxCyNz composition. It exhibits high propensity for adsorbing CO2 (approximate to 100 wt %) at 195 K and a hydrogen uptake of 2.6 wt % at 77 K. A first-principles pseudopotential-based DFT study shows the stable structure to consist of BN3 and NB3 motifs. The calculations also suggest the strongest CO2 adsorption to occur with a binding energy of 3.7 kJ mol(-1) compared with 2.0 kJ mol(-1) on graphene.
