Synthesis and Characterization of Ruteno-Cuprates by Solid State Reactions

A new class of hybrid ruteno-cuprates - such as Ru-1212 and Ru-1222 - was discovered in 1995 by Bauerfeind and collaborators. These materials present superconducting and magnetic states at low temperatures, an atypical duality in other superconductors. The superconductivity is more easily observed in Ru-1222, while Ru-1212 is a more problematic case, due to the strong effects of the preparation details in its superconducting properties, becoming the material superconductor or not. Ru-1212 presents a critical temperature that can vary between 0 and 46 K, depending on the preparation conditions, and a temperature of magnetic transition of around 132 K. The samples were prepared through solid state reactions, by using a mixture of high purity powders, followed by calcination and sinterization in the nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. This paper shows the preparation process of Ru-1212 samples, followed by their structural and magnetic characterization.

Ileal mucosal mast cell, eosinophil, and goblet cell populations during Hymenolepis diminuta infection of the rat

The population dynamics in the enteric connective tissues of eosinophils, mucosal mast cells (MMC), and in the mucosal epithelium of goblet cells were examined morphometrically in fixed ileal tissue of outbred Sprague Dawley rats during the first 32 days of infection with the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta. MMC and eosinophils were present in the lamina propria and submucosa; however, only eosinophils were also present in the muscularis externa. Eosinophilic infiltrate was first observed in the lamina propria at 15 days postinfection (dpi) and the numbers of eosinophils remained elevated through 32 dpi. Initial mucosal mastocytosis was detected on 6 dpi and MC numbers continued to rise over the study period without reaching a plateau. Goblet cell hyperplasia occurred only at 32 dpi. In contrast to some intestinal nematode infections where these same 3 cell types are associated with the host's expulsion responses, H. diminuta is not lost by a rapid host response in the outbred Sprague Dawley rat strain used in these experiments. We suggest that either the induction of hyperplasia of these host effector cells in ileum tissue during H. diminuta infection is not capable of triggering parasite rejection mechanisms, or the function of the induced hyperplasia is necessary for some as yet unassociated physiological or tissue architecture change in the host's intestine.

As vidas e as mortes de Jararaca: narrações de uma devoção popular no Nordeste Brasileiro

Este artigo parte de um estudo etnográfico da devoção popular ao cangaceiro Jararaca em Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, morto pela polícia local em 1927. Seu objetivo é destacar os ritos que manifestam e suportam tal devoção, sobretudo em seus aspectos verbais: testemunhos, narrações hagiográficas e fatos históricos tidos como reais - principalmente os fatos que cercaram a morte do cangaceiro e suas proezas no cangaço - que dão margem à reelaboração da identidade social do morto, de modo a aproximar sua vida do modelo do Robin Hood, o bom bandido, e sua morte do modelo do martírio cristão. Assim, ele pode tornar-se um santo funerário.

Carboxylic acids of marine evaporitic oils from Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Brazil

A. suite of 10 different marine evaporitic oil samples from Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Brazil was studied for its biomarker content, in particular its acidic constituents. The oils showed different molecular distributions and relative abundances of n-alkanoic, isoprenoid and hopanoic acids. The observed differences were assigned to the incorporation of immature organic matter in the oils and fractionation along the migration pathway. The diagenetic precursor functionality (alcohol/ether or acid) was proposed based on the comparison of the relative abundances of the neutral and acidic biomarkers (hopanoids, isoprenoids, alkyl-steranes, monoaromatic alkyl-steroids). In the acidic fraction, 3 series of steroid-alkanoic acids and monoaromatic steroid-alkanoic acids (steroid-methanoic, ethanoic and propanoic acids and monoaromatic steroid-methanoic, ethanoic and propanoic acids) were detected, while in the neutral fraction only 2 series of each corresponding class could be observed (methyl and ethyl-steranes and monoaromatic methyl and ethyl-steroids). These carbon shifts suggest that decarboxylation is an important process in the formation of the alkyrsteranes and monoaromatic alkyl-steroids, and we infer that carboxylic acids are the diagenetic precursors of these classes of compounds. When alcohol or ether are the diagenetic precursors (isoprenoids and hopanoids), no significant differences in the molecular distributions between neutral and acidic fractions were observed. Infrared finite gluon propagator and the structure of chiral symmetry breaking

We study the chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, using an effective potential for composite operators, with infrared finite gluon propagators that have been found by numerical calculation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations as well as in lattice simulations. The existence of a gluon propagator that is finite at k2 = 0 modifies substantially the transition between the phases with and without chiral symmetry.
