Two new donor-acceptor type liquid crystalline semiconductors based on benzothiazole have been synthesized. Their structural, photophysical and electronic properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the molecules was thoroughly examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical polarizing microscope. The DSC and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show that these materials posses excellent thermal stability and have decomposition temperatures in excess of 300 degrees C. Beyond 160 degrees C both molecules show a smectic A liquid crystalline phase that exists till about 240 degrees C. Field-effect transistors were fabricated by vacuum evaporating the semiconductor layer using standard bottom gate/top contact geometry. The devices exhibit p-channel behaviour with hole mobilities of 10(-2) cm(2)/Vs. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lead germanate-graphene nanosheets (PbGeO3-GNS) composites have been prepared by an efficient one-step, in-situ hydrothermal method and were used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). The PbGeO3 nanowires, around 100–200 nm in diameter, are highly encapsulated in a graphene matrix. The lithiation and de-lithiation reaction mechanisms of the PbGeO3 anode during the charge-discharge processes have been investigated by X-ray diffraction and electrochemical characterization. Compared with pure PbGeO3 anode, dramatic improvements in the electrochemical performance of the composite anodes have been obtained. In the voltage window of 0.01–1.50 V, the composite anode with 20 wt.% GNS delivers a discharge capacity of 607 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 50 cycles. Even at a high current density of 1600 mA g−1, a capacity of 406 mAh g−1 can be achieved. Therefore, the PbGeO3-GNS composite can be considered as a potential anode material for lithium ion batteries.

A new procedure for the preparation of amorphous Ni-Co-B nanoparticles is reported, with a detailed investigation of their morphology by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, as well as their magnetic properties. Many factors, such as chemical composition, anisotropy, size and shape of the particles, were controlled through chemical synthesis, resulting in the control of morphological and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. Controlling pH values with ethylenediamine and using sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant lowered the size of the nanoparticles to below 10 nm. Such a small structure and chemical disorder in nanocrystalline materials lead to magnetic properties that are different from those in their bulk-sized counterparts. The obtained nanoparticles can be used for different purposes, from pharmaceutical applications to implementations in different materials technology. The focus of this research is the synthesis of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles in a new way and studying the reaction of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles with Mg and B precursors and their effect on MgB2 properties. New nanostructures are formed in the reaction of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles with Mg: Mg2Ni, Co2Mg and possibly Mg2Co.

Thermally stable mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with pore size of 50 nm have been synthesized by adopting the polymeric micelle-assembly method. A triblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine-b-ethylene oxide), which serves as a template for the mesopores, was utilized to form polymeric micelles. The effective interaction of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with the polymeric micelles enabled us to fabricate stable mesoporous films. By changing the molar ratio of TEOS and TTIP, several mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with different compositions can be synthesized. The presence of amorphous SiO2 phase effectively retards the growth of anatase TiO2 crystal in the pore walls and retains the original mesoporous structure, even at higher temperature (650 °C). These TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films are of very high quality, without any cracks or voids. The addition of SiO2 phase to mesoporous TiO2 films not only adsorbs more organic dyes, but also significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity compared to mesoporous pure TiO2 film without SiO2 phase.

Owing to widespread applications, synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles is recently attracting considerable attention. Increasing environmental concerns over chemical synthesis routes have resulted in attempts to develop biomimetic approaches. One of them is synthesis using plant parts, which eliminates the elaborate process of maintaining the microbial culture and often found to be kinetically favourable than other bioprocesses. The present study deals with investigating the effect of process variables like reductant concentrations, reaction pH, mixing ratio of the reactants and interaction time on the morphology and size of silver nanoparticles synthesized using aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) leaves. The formation of crystalline silver nanoparticles was confirmed using X-ray diffraction analysis. By means of UV spectroscopy, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques, it was observed that the morphology and size of the nanoparticles were strongly dependent on the process parameters. Within 4 h interaction period, nanoparticles below 20-nm-size with nearly spherical shape were produced. On increasing interaction time (ageing) to 66 days, both aggregation and shape anisotropy (ellipsoidal, polyhedral and capsular) of the particles increased. In alkaline pH range, the stability of cluster distribution increased with a declined tendency for aggregation of the particles. It can be inferred from the study that fine tuning the bioprocess parameters will enhance possibilities of desired nano-product tailor made for particular applications.

NiO has been synthesized by microwave-induced chemical synthesis route using metalorganic complex of nickel in a domestic-type microwave oven (2.45 GHz). A novel metalorganic complex of nickel, viz., a beta-ketoester of nickel, synthesized and characterized as apart of this work, was employed as the precursor material. We varied the experimental parameters, such as the choice of solvent and microwave power, to obtain nanoparticles of NiO. The NiO nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM. The particle size of the NiO was found to vary from 7-40 nm. The magnetic behavior of the nanoparticles of NiO was examined with a vibrating sample magnetometer, revealing that as the particle size diminishes, the magnetic ordering in NiO changes, leading to a small, measurable coercivity.

We describe the synthesis and structure of Barium sulfate nanoparticles by precipitation method in the presence of water soluble inorganic stabilizing agent, sodium hexametaphosphate, (NaPO3)(6). The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement method using powder X-ray diffraction data. Barium sulfate nanoparticles were crystallized in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm (No. 62) having the lattice parameters a = 7.215(1) (angstrom), b = 8.949(1) (angstrom) and c = 5.501 (1) (angstrom) respectively. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the nanoparticles are size range, 30-50 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed distinct absorption due to the SO42- moiety at 1115 and 1084 cm(-1) indicating formation of barium sulfate nanoparticles free from the phosphate group from the stabilizer used in the synthesis. Isoquinoline was prepared through the Beckmann rearrangement of cinnamaldoxime over different H-zeolites, K-10 montmorillonite clay, amorphous SiO2–Al2O3 and γ-alumina under well-optimized conditions of temperature, weight hourly space velocity and catalyst loading. Cinnamaldoxime under ambient reaction conditions over the catalysts underwent migration of the anti-styryl moiety to electron deficient nitrogen (Beckmann rearrangement) followed by an intramolecular cyclization to yield isoquinoline. Cinnamo-nitrile (dehydration product) and cinnamaldehyde were formed as by-products. Isoquinoline formation was high on zeolite catalysts (ca. >86.5%) and mordenite (ca. 92.3%) was the most efficient in the series. Catalysts were susceptible for deactivation and the decrease in the percentage conversion of oxime with time is associated with a corresponding increase in the acid hydrolysis producing salicylaldehyde at later stages of the reaction. However, these catalysts retain activity considerably and can be recycled without loss of activity and change of product distribution.

Nanocrystalline perovskite barium titanate with an average particle size less than similar to 10 nm is produced using sol-gel route involving ligand-assisted templating. BaTiO3 is obtained by the controlled hydrolysis and condensation reaction of barium acetate (Ba(CH3COO)(2)) with titanium tetra chloride (TiCl4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine (DDA) which is used as the template. Our attempts to produce mesoporous BaTiO3 have resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline BaTiO3. The synthesis of nanostructured BaTiO3 is carried out using the ligand-assisted templating approach which proceeds through the sol-gel route. Dodecylamine is used as the template. The sol-gel process in general presents inherent advantages because the nanostructure of the desired materials can be controlled together with their porous structure. Ligand-assisted templating approach involves the formation of covalent bond between the inorganic analogue and the template. Ba(CH3COO)(2) and TiCl4 are used as barium-source and titanium-source respectively. The reaction between Ba(CH3COO)(2) and TiCl4 is found to take place deliberately on the pre-assembled species which acts as the template or occurring with in them which in turn will lead to the generation of the desired nanoscale structure (nanopores or nanoparticles).

The transesterification of methyl salicylate with phenol has been studied in vapour phase over solid acid catalysts such as ZrO2, MoO3 and SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia. The catalytic materials were prepared and characterized for their total surface acidity, BET surface area and powder XRD patterns. The effect of mole-ratio of the reactants, catalyst bed temperature, catalyst weight, flow-rate of reactants, WHSV and time-on-stream on the conversion (%) of phenol and selectivity (%) of salol has been investigated. A good yield (up to 70%) of salol with 90% selectivity was observed when the reactions were carried out at a catalyst bed temperature of 200 degrees C and flow-rate of 10 mL/h in presence of Mo(VI)/ZrO2 as catalyst. The results have been interpreted based on the variation of acidic properties and powder XRD phases of zirconia on incorporation of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions. The effect of poisoning of acid sites of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia on total surface acidity, powder XRD phases and catalytic activity was also studied. Possible reaction mechanisms for the formation of salol and diphenyl ether over acid sites are proposed.

Rare earth exchanged H–Y zeolites were prepared by simple ion exchange methods at 353 K and have been characterized using different physicochemical techniques. A strong peak around 58 ppm in the 27Al{1H} MAS NMR spectra of these zeolites suggests a tetrahedral coordination for the framework aluminium. Small peak at or near 0 ppm is due to hexa-coordinated extra-framework aluminium and a shoulder peak near 30 ppm is a penta-coordinated aluminium species; [Al(OH)4]−. The vapor-phase benzene alkylation with 1-decene and 1-dodecene was investigated with these catalytic systems. Under the reaction conditions of 448 K, benzene/olefin molar ratio of 20 and time on stream 3 h, the most efficient catalyst was CeH–Y which showed more than 70% of olefin conversion with 48.5% 2-phenyldecane and 46.8%, 2-phenyldodecane selectivities with 1-decene and 1-dodecene respectively.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of an organic azide and an acetylenic unit, often referred to as the ``click reaction'', has become an important ligation tool both in the context of materials chemistry and biology. Thus, development of simple approaches to directly generate polymers that bear either an azide or an alkyne unit has gained considerable importance. We describe here a straightforward approach to directly prepare linear and hyperbranched polyesters that carry terminal propargyl groups. To achieve the former, we designed an AB-type monomer that carries a hydroxyl group and a propargyl ester, which upon self-condensation under standard transesterification conditions yielded a polyester that carries a single propargyl group at one of its chain-ends. Similarly, an AB(2) type monomer that carries one hydroxyl group and two propargyl ester groups, when polymerized under the same conditions yielded a hyperbranched polymer with numerous clickable'' propargyl groups at its molecular periphery. These propargyl groups can be readily clicked with different organic azides, such as benzyl azide, omega-azido heptaethyleneglycol monomethylether or 9-azidomethyl anthracene. When an anthracene chromophore is clicked, the molecular weight of the linear polyester could be readily estimated using both UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Furthermore, the reactive propargyl end group could also provide an opportunity to prepare block copolymers in the case of linear polyesters and to generate nanodimensional scaffolds to anchor variety of functional units, in the case of the hyperbranched polymer. Polymeric peroxides have received renewed attention in the recent past, in view of some significant explorations of their physical and chemical properties. The potential of polymeric peroxides as a class, as specialized fuel, and the need to synthesize such new materials have been reported in the literature. So far, this class of polymers is constituted only by a dozen or so polyperoxides. From the point of view of their use in propellant applications, the importance lies in making materials which are easy to handle etc., unlike the earlier reported poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP), a sticky semi-solid mass. However, judging from the better combustion characteristics, exploring aromatic monomers was thought worthwhile. In this preliminary communication, the synthesis of a new polymeric peroxide made from 1,4-divinylbenzene is reported. The polymer obtained was in powder form and had an exothermic heat of degradation approximately equal to that of PSP. 4 ref.--AA

A novel, cost effective,environment-friendly and energetically beneficial alternative method for the synthesis of giant dielectric pseudo-perovskite material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) is presented. The method involved auto-combustion of an aqueous precursor solution in oxygen atmosphere with the help of external fuels and is capable of producing high amount of CCTO at ultra-low temperature, in the combustion residue itself. The amount of phase generated was observed to be highly dependent on the combustion process i.e. on the nature and amount of external-fuels added for combustion. Two successful fuel combinations capable of producing reasonably higher amount of the desired compound were investigated. On a structural characterization grain size was observed to decrease drastically to nano-dimension compared to submicron-size that was obtained in a traditional sol-gel combustion and subsequent cacination method. Therefore, the method reported can produce nano-crystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramic matrix at an ultra-low temperature and is expected to be applicable for other multifunctional perovskite oxide materials.
