Rate coefficients for the radiative association of titanium and oxygen atoms to form the titanium monoxide (TiO) molecule are estimated. The radiative association of Ti(F-3) and O(P-3) atoms is dominated by an approach along the C-3 Delta potential energy curve, accompanied by spontaneous emission into the X-3 Delta ground state of TiO. For temperatures ranging from 300-14 000 K, the total rate coefficients are found to vary from 4.76 x 10(-17) to 9.96 x 10(-17) cm(3) s(-1), respectively.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH, calcium ion release, setting time, and solubility of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) and white Portland cement (WPC) combined with the following radiopacifying agents: bismuth oxide (BO), calcium tungstate (CT), and zirconium oxide (ZO). Methods: Fifty acrylic teeth with root-end filling material were immersed in ultrapure water for measurement of pH and calcium release (atomic absorption spectrophotometry) at 3, 24, 72, and 168 hours. For evaluation of setting time, each material was analyzed according to the American Society for Testing and Materials guidelines 266/08. The solubility test was performed according to American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association specification no. 57/2000. Solubility, setting time, and pH values were compared by using analysis of variance and Tukey test, and the values of calcium release were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis and Miller tests. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: The pH and calcium release were higher at 3 and 24 hours. WPC was the material with the higher values for both properties. WMTA had the greatest solubility among all materials (P < .05). All radiopacifiers increased the setting time of WPC, and WMTA had the shortest setting time among all materials (P < .05). Conclusions: All materials released calcium ions. Except for WPC/CT at 168 hours, all materials promoted an alkaline pH. On the basis of the obtained results, ZO and CT can be considered as potential radiopacifying agents to be used in combination with Portland cement. (J Endod 2012;38:394-397)

Statement of problem. Coatings of zirconite, Y2O3 or ZrO2 on wax patterns before investing in phosphate-bonded investments have been recommended to reduce the reaction layer in titanium castings, but they are not easily obtainable. Spinel-based investments are relatively stable with molten titanium and could be used as coatings to improve the quality of castings made with those investments. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pattern coating with a commercial spinel-based investment before investing in 1 of 3 phosphate-bonded investments on the marginal coping fit and surface roughness of commercially pure titanium castings. Material and methods. Ten square acrylic resin patterns (12 x 12 x 2 mm) per group were invested in the phosphate-bonded investments Rematitan Plus (RP), Rema Exakt (RE), and Castorit Super C (CA) with or without a coating of the spinel-based investment, Rematitan Ultra (RU). After casting, the specimens were cleaned and the surface roughness was measured with a profilometer. Copings for dental implants with conical abutment were invested, eliminated, and cast as previously described. The copings were cleaned and misfit was measured with a profile projector (n=10). For both tests, the difference between the mean value of RU only and each value of the phosphate-bonded investment was calculated, and the data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (alpha=.05). In addition, the investment roughness was measured in bar specimens (30 x 10 x 10 mm), and the data (n=10) were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test (alpha=.05). Results. Two-way ANOVA for casting surface roughness was significant because of the investment, the coating technique, and the interaction between variables. One-way ANOVA was performed to prove the interaction term, and Tukey's post hoc test showed that RP with coating had the lowest mean, while RP had the highest. CA with coating was not different from RP with coating or CA without coating. RE with coating was similar to CA, while RE was different from all groups. For coping marginal fit, the 2-way ANOVA was significant for the investment, the coating technique, and the interaction between variables. The interaction was analyzed by1-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test that showed no significant difference among the coated groups, which had better marginal fit than the groups without coating. Among the groups without coating, CA had significant lower marginal misfit than RP, while RE was not different from CA and RP. For the investment surface roughness, the 1-way ANOVA was significant. CA and RU were smoother than RE and RP (P<.001). Conclusions. The coating technique improved the quality of castings fabricated with phosphate-bonded investments. (J Prosthet Dent 2012;108:51-57)

Strontium zirconate oxide was synthesized by co-precipitation and the citrate route and was evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production. The catalyst samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and TG, and catalytic activity was measured based on the ester content of the biodiesel produced that was quantified by GC. The co-precipitate samples were obtained in alkaline pH and had a mixture of the perovskite and pure strontium and zirconium oxide phases. Ester conversion using these samples was approximately 1.6%, indicating no catalytic activity. The citrate route was more efficient in producing perovskite when carried out at pH 7-8; excess SrCO3 was found on the catalyst surface due to CO2 adsorption, thus demonstrating no catalytic activity. The same synthesis carried out at pH 2 resulted in free OH- groups, with a small amount of the carbonate species that produced ester yield values of 98%. Therefore, matrices based on strontium zirconate produced via the citrate route in acidic media are potential heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Recently, a new ternary phase was discovered in the Ti-Si-B system, located near the Ti6Si2B composition. The present study concerns the preparation of titanium alloys that contain such phase mixed with α-titanium and other intermetallic phases. High-purity powders were initially processed in a planetary ball-mill under argon atmosphere with Ti-18Si-6B and Ti-7.5Si-22.5B at. (%) initial compositions. Variation of parameters such as rotary speed, time, and ball diameters were adopted. The as-milled powders were pressureless sintered and hot pressed. Both the as-milled and sintered materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry. Sintered samples have presented equilibrium structures formed mainly by the α-Ti+Ti6Si2B+Ti5Si3+TiB phases. Silicon and boron peaks disappear throughout the milling processes, as observed in the powder diffraction data. Furthermore, an iron contamination of up to 10 at. (%) is measured by X-ray spectroscopy analysis on some regions of the sintered samples. Density, hardness and tribological results for these two compositions are also presented here.

Cancer is one of the most severe and widespread diseases and an ideal treatment has not yet been found. In the last decades, cisplatinum was commonly applied in cancer therapy with very good results. However, serious side effects and resistant tumors necessitated the development of new antineoplastic agents, such as metallocenes dihalides. These are metal-based compounds exhibiting two cyclopentadienyl ligands and a cis-dihalide motif. They resemble the cis-chloro configuration of cisplatinum, which propounds a similar mode of action. Metallocenes comprising one of the transition metals titanium, molybdenum, vanadium, niobium, and zirconium as the metal center have been shown to be effective against several cancer cell lines. Evidence for the accumulation of metallocenes in the nucleus implied that DNA is one of the major targets. Although several studies reported adduct formation of metallocenes with nuclear DNA, as yet substantial information about the general binding pattern and the binding to higher-order structures is lacking. Mass spectrometry can fill this gap as it constitutes a powerful technique to investigate the formation of organometallic adducts. Presented data demonstrate that the two agents titanocene dichloride and molybdenocene dichloride bind to single-stranded DNA and RNA. Distinct fragment ions formed upon collision-induced dissociation help to unravel preferential binding sites within the oligonucleotides. Moreover, adducts with duplexes and quadruplexes shed light on the molecular mechanism of action.

Sedimentary rocks of Barremian through early Maestrichtian age recovered on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 61 had their principal source in the complex of igneous rocks with which they are interlayered in the Nauru Basin. Relict textures and primary sedimentary structures show these Cretaceous sediments to be of hyaloclastic origin, in part reworked and redeposited by slumps and currents. The dominant composition now is smectite, but locally iron, titanium, and manganese oxides, plagioclase, pyroxene, analcime, clinoptilolite, chalcedonic quartz, cristobalite, amphibole, nontronite, celadonite, and pyrite are also present. The mineral assemblages and the geochemistry reflect the original basaltic composition and its subsequent alteration by one or more processes of submarine weathering, authigenesis, hydrothermal circulation, and contact metamorphism. Hyaloclastitic sandstone, siltstone, and breccia within the sheet flows below 729 meters sub-bottom depth have Barremian fossils, thus establishing the age of the lower, or extrusive, complex of post-ridge-crest volcanism. Similar hyaloclastites between 564 and 729 meters are invaded by hypabyssal sills of the upper igneous complex, and fossil ages of Albian or Cenomanian set an older limit to the age of that second post-ridge-crest episode. Cenomanian to early Campanian sedimentary rocks between 490 and 564 meters have a substantial contribution of clays of submarine-weathered-basalt origin, as well as hydrothermal and pelagic components. The interval of reworked hyaloclastitic siltstone, sandstone, and breccias between 450 and 490 meters is of late Campanian and early Maestrichtian age. These sediments probably formed from glassy basalt that fragmented upon eruption nearby, when sills were being emplaced. In addition to pelagic elements, these Upper Cretaceous volcanogenic sediments include redeposited material of shallow-water origin, apparently derived from the Marshall Islands.

Piston core M77/2-024-5 was retrieved during the M77/2 cruise of Research Vessel Meteor in December 2008. Total organic carbon concentrations were determined using a Carlo Erba Element Analyzer (NA1500). Prior to analysis carbon bound to carbonate minerals was removed by leaching the sediment with 1 M HCl. Bulk nitrogen isotope ratios were determined using a Carlo Erba Element Analyzer (NA1500) coupled to a DeltaPlusXL isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Major and trace metals were analyzed after microwave-assisted (CEM MARS-5) acid digestion (HCl, HNO3 and HF) by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (aluminum, titanium and iron) (Teledyne Leeman Prodigy) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (molybdenum and uranium) (THERMO X-Series 2).

Recent and Late Quaternary shelf phosphorites have low Fe, Ti and Al contents. These elements enter the phosphorites with terrigenous impurities and organic detritus. Ti, Al, and some Fe are removed when the phosphorites are lithified, whereas remaining iron settles in the phosphorites as sulfides. Ti/Fe, Al/Fe and Ti/Al ratios are used as examples of difference between behavior of Fe and that of Ti and Al.

Titanium and iron concentration data from the anoxic Cariaco Basin, off the Venezuelan coast, can be used to infer variations in the hydrological cycle over northern South America during the past 14,000 years with subdecadal resolution. Following a dry Younger Dryas, a period of increased precipitation and riverine discharge occurred during the Holocene 'thermal maximum'. Since ~5400 years ago, a trend toward drier conditions is evident from the data, with high-amplitude fluctuations and precipitation minima during the time interval 3800 to 2800 years ago and during the 'Little Ice Age'. These regional changes in precipitation are best explained by shifts in the mean latitude of the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), potentially driven by Pacific-based climate variability. The Cariaco Basin record exhibits strong correlations with climate records from distant regions, including the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere, providing evidence for global teleconnections among regional climates.

We present excess Ba (Baxs) data (i.e., total Ba corrected for lithogenic Ba) for surface sediments from a north-south transect between the Polar Front Zone and the northern Weddell Gyre in the Atlantic sector and between the Polar Front Zone and the Antarctic continent in the Indian sector. Focus is on two different processes that affect excess Ba accumulation in the sediments: sediment redistribution and excess Ba dissolution. The effect of these processes needs to be corrected for in order to convert accumulation rate into vertical rain rate, the flux component that can be linked to export production. In the Southern Ocean a major process affecting Ba accumulation rate is sediment focusing, which is corrected for using excess 230Th. This correction, however, may not always be straightforward because of boundary scavenging effects. A further major process affecting excess Ba accumulation is barite dissolution during exposure at the sediment-water column interface. Export production estimates derived from excess 230Th and barite dissolution corrected Baxs accumulation rates (i.e., excess Ba vertical rain rates) are of the same magnitude but generally larger than export production estimates based on water column proxies (234Th-deficit in the upper water column; particulate excess Ba enrichment in the mesopelagic water column). We believe export production values based on excess Ba vertical rain rate might be overestimated due to inaccurate assessment of the Baxs preservation rate. Barite dissolution has, in general, been taken into account by relating it to exposure time before burial depending on the rate of sediment accumulation. However, the observed decrease of excess Ba content with increasing water column depth (or increasing hydrostatic pressure) illustrates the dependence of barite preservation on degree of saturation in the deep water column in accordance with available thermodynamic data. Therefore correction for barite dissolution would not be appropriate by considering only exposure time of the barite to some uniformly undersaturated deep water but requires also that regional differences in degree of undersatuation be taken into account.
