A Cu-II complex of protonated 4,4'-bipyridine (Hbyp) and 2-picolinate (pic), [Cu-2(pic)(3)(Hbyp)(H2O)(ClO4)(2)], has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The structure consists of two copper atoms that have different environments, bridged by a carboxylate group. The equatorial plane is formed by the two bidentate picolinate groups in one Cu-II, and one picolinate, one monodentate 4,4'-bipyridyl ligand and a water molecule in the other. Each copper atom is also weakly bonded to a perchlorate anion in an axial position. One of the coordinated perchlorate groups displays anion-pi interaction with the coordinated pyridine ring. The noncoordinated carboxylate oxygen is involved in lone-pair (l.p.)-pi interaction with the protonated pyridine ring. In addition there are pi-pi and H-bonding interactions in the structure. Bader's theory of "atoms in molecules" (AIM) is used to characterise the anion-pi and l.p.-pi interactions observed in the solid state. A high-level ab initio study (RI-MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory) has been performed to analyse the anion-pi binding affinity of the pyridine ring when it is coordinated to a transition metal and also when the other pyridine ring of the 4,4'-bipyridine moiety is protonated. Theoretical investigations support the experimental findings of an intricate network of intermolecular interactions, which is characterised in the studied complex, and also indicate that protonation as well as coordination to the transition metal have important roles in influencing the pi-binding properties of the aromatic ring. Three mu(1.5)-dicyanamide bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having molecular formula [Mn(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (1), [Co(dca)(2) (H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (2) and [Co(dca)(2)(bpds)](n) (3) [dca = dicyanamide; hmt = hexamethylenetetramine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study, low temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurement and thermal behavior. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 reveals that they are isostructural, comprising of 1D coordination polymers [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) [M = Mn(II), Co(II) for 1 and 2. respectively] with uncoordinated hmt molecules located among the chains. The [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) chains and the lattice hint molecules are connected through H-bonds resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. The octahedral N4O2 chromophore surrounding the metal ion forms via two trans located water oxygens and four nitrogens from four nitrile dca. Complex 3 is a 1D chain formed by two mu(1.5)-dca and one bridging bpds. The octahedral N-6 coordination sphere surrounding the cobalt ions comprises four nitrogens from dca and two from bpds. Low temperature magnetic study indicates small antiferromagnetic coupling for all the complexes. Best fit parameters for 1: J = -0.17 cm(-1), g = -2.03 with R = 6.1 x 10(-4), for 2, J = -0.50 cm(-1), and for 3, J = -0.95 cm(-1). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three copper(II) complexes, [CuL1], [CuL2] and [CuL3] where L-1, L-2 and L-3 are the tetradentate di-Schiff-base ligands prepared by the condensation of acetylacetone and appropriate diamines (e.g. 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane and 1,3-diaminopropane, respectively) in 2:1 ratios, have been prepared. These complexes act as host molecules and include a guest sodium ion by coordinating through the oxygen atoms to result in corresponding new trinuclear complexes, [(CuL1)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)][CuL1], [(CuL2)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (2) and [(CuL3)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (3) when crystallized from methanol solution containing sodium perchlorate. All three complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In all the complexes, the sodium cation has a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded to four oxygen atoms from two Schiff-base complexes of Cu(II) in addition to a perchlorate anion and a water molecule. The copper atoms are four coordinate in a square planar environment being bonded to two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the Schiff-base ligand. The variable temperature susceptibilities for complexes 1-3 were measured over the range 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = g(1)beta HS1 + g(2)beta HS2 + J(12)S(1)S(2) + g(3)beta HS3 for complex 1 and H = g(1)beta HS1 + g2 beta HS2 +J(12)S(1)S(2) for complexes 2 and 3 has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: g(1) = g(2) = 2.07(0), J = - 1.09(1) cm(-1) for complex 1, g(1) = g(2) = 2.06(0), J = -0.55(1) cm(-1) for complex 2 and g1 = g2 = 2.07(0).J = -0.80(1) cm(-1) for 3. Stepwise electrochemical reduction of the complex fac-[Mn(Br)(CO)(3)(tmbp)] (tmbp = 4,4',5,5'-tetramethyl-2,2'-biphosphinine) produces the dimer [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](2) and the five-coordinate anion [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](-). All three members of the redox series have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic data provide valuable insight into the localization of the added electrons on the (carbonyl)manganese and tmbp centers. In particular, the formulation of the two-electron-reduced anion as [Mn-0(CO)(3)(tmbp(-))](-) also agrees with the analysis of its IR nu(CO) wavenumbers and with the results of density functional theoretical (DFT) MO calculations on this compound. The strongly delocalized pi-bonding in the anion stabilizes its five-coordinate geometry and results in the appearance of several mixed Mn-to-tmbp charge-transfer/IL(tmbp) transitions in the near-UV-vis spectral region. A thorough voltammetric and UV-vis/IR spectroelectrochemical study of the reduction path provided evidence for a direct formation of [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](-) via a two-electron ECE mechanism involving the [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](.) radical transient. At ambient temperature [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](-) reacts rapidly with nonreduced fac-[Mn(Br)(CO)(3)(tmbp)] to produce [Mn(CO)(3)(tmbp)](2). Comparison with the analogous 2,2'-bipyridine complexes has revealed striking similarity in the bonding properties and reactivity, despite the stronger pi-acceptor character of the tmbp ligand.

The Schiff base ligand, HL (2-[1-(3-methylamino-propylimino)-ethyl]-phenol), the 1:1 condensation product of 2-hydroxy acetophenone and N-methyl-1,3-diaminopropane, has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography as the perchlorate salt [H2L]ClO4 (1). The structure consists of discrete [H2L](+) cations and perchlorate anions. Two dinuclear Ni-II complexes, [Ni2L2(NO2)(2)] (2), [Ni2L2(NO3)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using this ligand and characterized by single crystal X-ray analyses. Complexes 2 and 3 are centrosymmetric dimers in which the Ni-II ions are in distorted fac- and mer-octahedral environments, respectively, bridged by two mu(2)-phenolate ions of deprotonated ligand, L. The plane of the phenyl rings and the Ni2O2 basal plane are nearly coplanar in 2 but almost perpendicular in 3. We have studied and explained this different behavior using high level DFT calculations (RI-BP86/def2-TZVP level of theory). The conformation observed in 3, which is energetically less favorable, is stabilized via intermolecular non-covalent interactions. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light, characteristic fluorescence of compound 1 was observed; by comparison fluorescence intensity decreases in case of compound 3 and completely quenched in compound 2.

Two series of zinc(II) complexes of two Schiff bases (H2L1 and H2L2) formulated as [Zn(HL1/HL2)]ClO4 (1a and 1b) and [Zn(L1/L2)] (2a and 2b), where H2L1 = 1,8-bis(salicylideneamino)-3,6-dithiaoctane and H2L2 = 1,9-bis(salicylideneamino)-3,7-dithianonane, have been prepared and isolated in pure form by changing the chemical environment. Elemental, spectral, and other physicochemical results characterize the complexes. A single crystal X-ray diffraction study confirms the structure of [Zn(HL1)]ClO4 (1a). In 1a, zinc(II) has a distorted octahedral environment with a ZnO2N2S2 chromophore.

A new tetranuclear complex, [Cu4L4](ClO4)4·2H2O (1), has been synthesized from the self-assembly of copper(II) perchlorate and the tridentate Schiff base ligand (2E,3E)-3-(2-aminopropylimino) butan-2-one oxime (HL). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complex 1 consists of a Cu4(NO)4 core where the four copper(II) centers having square pyramidal environment are arranged in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. They are linked together by a rare bridging mode (μ3-η1,η2,η1) of oximato ligands. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility data indicates moderate antiferromagnetic (J1 = −48 cm−1, J2 = −40 cm−1 and J3 = −52 cm−1) exchange interaction through σ-superexchange pathways (in-plane bridging) of the oxime group. Theoretical calculations based on DFT technique have been used to obtain the energy states of different spin configurations and estimate the coupling constants and to understand the exact magnetic exchange pathways.

This work presents a model study for the formation of a dimeric dioxomolybdenum(VI) complex [MoO2L]2, generated by simultaneous satisfaction of acceptor and donor character existing in the corresponding monomeric Mo(VI) complex MoO2L. This mononuclear complex is specially designed to contain a coordinatively unsaturated Mo(VI) acceptor centre and a free donor group, (e.g. –NH2 group) strategically placed in the ligand skeleton [H2L = 2-hydroxyacetophenonehydrazone of 2-aminobenzoylhydrazine]. Apart from the dimer [MoO2L]2, complexes of the type MoO2L·B (where B = CH3OH, γ-picoline and imidazole) are also reported. All the complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic (UV–Vis, IR, 1H NMR) techniques and cyclic voltammetry. Single crystal X-ray structures of [MoO2L]2 (1), MoO2L·CH3OH (2), and MoO2L.(γ-pic) (3) have been determined and discussed. DFT calculation on these complexes corroborates experimental data and provides clue for the facile formation of this type of dimer not reported previously. The process of dimer formation may also be viewed as an interaction between two molecules of a specially designed complex acting as a monodentate ligand. This work is expected to open up a new field of design and synthesis of dimeric complexes through the process of symbiotic donor–acceptor (acid–base) interaction between two molecules of a specially designed monomer.

Reaction of LaX3(THF)(n) (X = Cl, 1) with two equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)) gave good yields of the bis-Tp complexes [La(Tp(Me2))(2)X] (X = Cl (1); I (3)). However, the formation of 1 and 3 is always accompanied by significant amounts of La(Tp(Me2))(2)(kappa(2)-pz(Me2)) ([pz(Me2)](-) = 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolato) (2). The pyrazolato complex 2, which presumably arises from decomposition of the [Tp(Me2)](-) moiety during salt metathesis, was independently prepared in good yield from 1 and in situ generated [pz(Me2)](-). The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Subsequent reactions of halogeno-Tp(Me2) complexes 1 and 3 with various alkali metal salts MR (M = Li, R = CH2SiMe3, Ph, N(SiMe3)(2); M = K, R = OAr) gave M(Tp(Me2)) as the major product. Alternatively, the mono-Tp bis(aryloxide) derivatives [Ln(Tp(Me2))(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(2)] (Ln = La (4); Nd (5)) were obtained in high yields by salt metathesis of [Ln(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(3)] with one equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)). The Schiff base thiophenyl-2-methylidene-2-aminophenol (ImineOH) is obtained from a stoichiometric mixture of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminophenol in ethanol under reflux at 90 C. Its crystal structure is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. ImineOH packs in an orthorhombic unit cell in the Pbca space group with the unit cell parameters a = 16.942(4) Å, b = 13.4395(11) Å, and c = 17.5857(12) Å, V = 4004.1(10) Å3, Z = 16. Strong hydrogen bonds are present in the ImineOH structure. Apart from the X-ray study, ImineOH was characterized by elemental analysis (CHN-S) and FT-IR (4000 cm-1 to 400 cm-1), UV-Vis and 13C, 1H, and 15N NMR spectroscopic measurements. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Six new lanthanide complexes of stoichiometric formula (C)(2)[Ln(Pic)(5)]-where (C) is a imidazolium cation coming from the ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium picrate (BMIm-Pic), 1-butyl-3-ethylimidazolium picrate (BEIm-Pic), and 1,3-dibutylimidazolium picrate (BBIm-Pic), and Ln is Eu(III) or Gd(III) ions-have been prepared and characterized. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first cases of Ln(III) pentakis(picrate) complexes. The crystal structures of (BEIm)(2)[Eu(Pic)(5)] and (BBIm)(2)[Eu(Pic)(5)] compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The [Eu(Pic)(5)](2-) polyhedra have nine oxygen atoms coordinated to the Eu(III) ion, four oxygen atoms from bidentate picrate, and one oxygen atom from monodentate picrate. The structures of the Eu complexes were also calculated using the sparkle model for lanthanide complexes, allowing an analysis of intramolecular energy transfer processes in the coordination compounds. The photoluminescence properties of the Eu(III) complexes were then studied experimentally and theoretically, leading to a rationalization of their emission quantum yields.

Three samples of the skarn mineral rustumite Ca10(Si2O7)2(SiO4)(OH)2Cl2, space group C2/c, a ≈7.6, b ≈ 18.5, c ≈ 15.5 Å, β ≈ 104°, with variable OH, Cl, F content were investigated by electron microprobe, single-crystal X-ray structure refinements, and Raman spectroscopy. “Rust1LCl” is a low chlorine rustumite Ca10(Si2O7)2(SiO4)(OH1.88F0.12)(Cl1.28,OH0.72) from skarns associated with the Rize batholith near Ikizedere, Turkey. “Rust2F” is a F-bearing rustumite Ca10(Si2O7)2(SiO4)(OH1.13F0.87) (Cl1 96OH0.04) from xenoliths in ignimbrites of the Upper Chegem Caldera, Northern Caucasus, Russia. “Rust3LClF” represents a low-Cl, F-bearing rustumite Ca10(Si2O7)2(SiO4)0.87(H4O4)0.13(OH1.01F0.99) (Cl1.00 OH1.00) from altered merwinite skarns of the Birkhin massif, Baikal Lake area, Eastern Siberia, Russia. Rustumite from Birkhin massif is characterized by a significant hydrogarnet-like or fluorine substitution at the apices of the orthosilicate group, leading to specific atomic displacements. The crystal structures including hydrogen positions have been refined from single-crystal X-ray data to R1 = 0.0205 (Rust1_LCl), R1 = 0.0295 (Rust2_F), and R1 = 0.0243 (Rust3_LCl_F), respectively. Depletion in Cl and replacement by OH is associated with smaller unit-cell dimensions. The substitution of OH by F leads to shorter hydrogen bonds O-H⋯F instead of O-H⋯OH. Raman spectra for all samples have been measured and confirm slight strengthening of the hydrogen bonds with uptake of F.This study discusses the complex crystal chemistry of the skarn mineral rustumite and may provide a wider understanding of the chemical reactions related to contact metamorphism of limestones.
