Building flexible constraint length Viterbi decoders requires us to be able to realize de Bruijn networks of various sizes on the physically provided interconnection network. This paper considers the case when the physical network is itself a de Bruijn network and presents a scalable technique for realizing any n-node de Bruijn network on an N-node de Bruijn network, where n < N. The technique ensures that the length of the longest path realized on the network is minimized and that each physical connection is utilized to send only one data item, both of which are desirable in order to reduce the hardware complexity of the network and to obtain the best possible performance.

In this article, the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory has been incorporated into classical/local Bernoulli-Euler rod model to capture unique properties of the nanorods under the umbrella of continuum mechanics theory. The spectral finite element (SFE) formulation of nanorods is performed. SFE formulation is carried out and the exact shape functions (frequency dependent) and dynamic stiffness matrix are obtained as function of nonlocal scale parameter. It has been found that the small scale affects the exact shape functions and the elements of the dynamic stiffness matrix. The results presented in this paper can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the wave dispersion properties of carbon nanotubes.

We propose and demonstrate a technique for electrical detection of polarized spins in semiconductors in zero applied magnetic fields. Spin polarization is generated by optical injection using circularly polarized light which is modulated rapidly using an electro-optic cell. The modulated spin polarization generates a weak time-varying magnetic field which is detected by a sensitive radio-frequency coil. Using a calibrated pickup coil and amplification electronics, clear signals were obtained for bulk GaAs and Ge samples from which an optical spin orientation efficiency of 4.8% could be determined for Ge at 1342 nm excitation wavelength. In the presence of a small external magnetic field, the signal decayed according to the Hanle effect, from which a spin lifetime of 4.6 +/- 1.0 ns for electrons in bulk Ge at 127 K was extracted.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. The spectral index-luminosity relationship for steep-spectrum cores in galaxies and quasars has been investigated, and it is found that the sample of galaxies supports earlier suggestions of a strong correlation, while there is weak evidence for a similar relationship for the quasars. It is shown that a strong spectral index-luminosity correlation can be used to set an upper limit to the velocities of the radio-emitting material which is expelled from the nucleus in the form of collimated beams or jets having relativistic bulk velocities. The data on cores in galaxies indicate that the Lorentz factors of the radiating material are less than about 2.

We present the radio-optical imaging of ATLBS, a sensitive radio survey (Subrahmanyan et al. 2010). The primary aim of the ATLBS survey is to image low-power radio sources which form the bulk of the radio source population to moderately high red-shifts (z similar to 1.0). The accompanying multiband optical and near infra-red observations provide information about the hosts and environments of the radio sources. We give here details of the imaging of the radio data and optical data for the ATLBS survey.

Results from elasto-plastic numerical simulations of jointed rocks using both the equivalent continuum and discrete continuum approaches are presented, and are compared with experimental measurements. Initially triaxial compression tests on different types of rocks with wide variation in the uniaxial compressive strength are simulated using both the approaches and the results are compared. The applicability and relative merits and limitations of both the approaches for the simulation of jointed rocks are discussed. It is observed that both the approaches are reasonably good in predicting the real response. However, the equivalent continuum approach has predicted somewhat higher stiffness values at low strains. Considering the modelling effort involved in case of discrete continuum approach, for problems with complex geometry, it is suggested that a proper equivalent continuum model can be used, without compromising much on the accuracy of the results. Then the numerical analysis of a tunnel in Japan is taken up using the continuum approach. The deformations predicted are compared well against the field measurements and the predictions from discontinuum analysis. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
