If an understanding that to be educated relies on the integration of all of our higher faculties (mind, heart and spirit ) once existed, it was eclipsed long ago by a focus on the rational mind as the locus of reliable behavior. This reduced scope of teaching and learning within the academy has deprived both faculty and students of more substantive and meaningful experiences. How might we re-orient the academy to these deeper purposes—to the heart of higher education? Our guests for a conversation on questions of meaning and purpose are Diana Chapman Walsh, former President of Wellesley College, and Arthur Zajonc, professor of physics at Amherst College. In their work and their writing, they both inspire and ignite conversations around the issue of integrative education.

Arachidonic acid (5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid; C20:4) (arachidonate, AA) is a vital polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid (PUFA) without its presence the mammalian brain, muscles, and possibly other organs cannot develop or function [1] and [2]. AA fulfils numerous known and possibly yet unknown functions as integral part of mammalian phospholipid membranes and as free AA which also acts as a precursor of a variety of biologically active lipid mediators generally referred to as eicosanoids (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes). A more recent class of eicosanoids is composed of the endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) and arachidonoyl ethanolamide (anandamide, AEA), which act on cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors but also modulate ion channels and nuclear receptors [3] and [4]. In recent years, the role of endocannabinoids as prominent anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory eicosanoids has been shown by numerous studies [5].

A series of numerical simulations of the flow over a forest stand have been conducted using two different turbulence closure models along with various levels of canopy morphology data. Simulations have been validated against Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry measurements from a wind tunnel study using one hundred architectural model trees, the porosities of which have been assessed using a photographic technique. It has been found that an accurate assessment of the porosity of the canopy, and specifically the variability with height, improves simulation quality regardless of the turbulence closure model used or the level of canopy geometry included. The observed flow field and recovery of the wake is in line with characteristic canopy flows published in the literature and it was found that the shear stress transport turbulence model was best able to capture this detail numerically.
