In this paper, we report on a new method to cleave polymer optical fibre. The most common way to cut a polymer optical fibre is chopping it with a razor blade; however, in this approach both the fibre and the blade must be preheated in order to turn the material ductile, and thus, prevent crazing. In this paper, we make use of the temperature-time equivalence in polymers to replace the use of heating by an increase of the cleaving time and use a sawing motion to reduce fibre end face damage. In this way, the polymer fibre can be cleaved at room temperature in seconds with the resulting end face being of similar quality to those produced by more complex and expensive heated systems.

A closed-form expression for a lower bound on the per soliton capacity of the nonlinear optical fibre channel in the presence of (optical) amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) noise is derived. This bound is based on a non-Gaussian conditional probability density function for the soliton amplitude jitter induced by the ASE noise and is proven to grow logarithmically as the signal-to-noise ratio increases.

Distributed fibre sensors provide unique capabilities for monitoring large infrastructures with high resolution. Practically, all these sensors are based on some kind of backscattering interaction. A pulsed activating signal is launched on one side of the sensing fibre and the backscattered signal is read as a function of the time of flight of the pulse along the fibre. A key limitation in the measurement range of all these sensors is introduced by fibre attenuation. As the pulse travels along the fibre, the losses in the fibre cause a drop of signal contrast and consequently a growth in the measurement uncertainty. In typical single-mode fibres, attenuation imposes a range limit of less than 30km, for resolutions in the order of 1-2 meters. An interesting improvement in this performance can be considered by using distributed amplification along the fibre [1]. Distributed amplification allows having a more homogeneous signal power along the sensing fibre, which also enables reducing the signal power at the input and therefore avoiding nonlinearities. However, in long structures (≥ 50 km), plain distributed amplification does not perfectly compensate the losses and significant power variations along the fibre are to be expected, leading to inevitable limitations in the measurements. From this perspective, it is simple to understand intuitively that the best possible solution for distributed sensors would be offered by a virtually transparent fibre, i.e. a fibre exhibiting effectively zero attenuation in the spectral region of the pulse. In addition, it can be shown that lossless transmission is the working point that allows the minimization of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise build-up. © 2011 IEEE.

In this talk we investigate the usage of spectrally shaped amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in order to emulate highly dispersed wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signals in an optical transmission system. Such a technique offers various simplifications to large scale WDM experiments. Not only does it offer a reduction in transmitter complexity, removing the need for multiple source lasers, it potentially reduces the test and measurement complexity by requiring only the centre channel of a WDM system to be measured in order to estimate WDM worst case performance. The use of ASE as a test and measurement tool is well established in optical communication systems and several measurement techniques will be discussed [1, 2]. One of the most prevalent uses of ASE is in the measurement of receiver sensitivity where ASE is introduced in order to degrade the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and measure the resulting bit error rate (BER) at the receiver. From an analytical point of view noise has been used to emulate system performance, the Gaussian Noise model is used as an estimate of highly dispersed signals and has had consider- able interest [3]. The work to be presented here extends the use of ASE by using it as a metric to emulate highly dispersed WDM signals and in the process reduce WDM transmitter complexity and receiver measurement time in a lab environment. Results thus far have indicated [2] that such a transmitter configuration is consistent with an AWGN model for transmission, with modulation format complexity and nonlinearities playing a key role in estimating the performance of systems utilising the ASE channel emulation technique. We conclude this work by investigating techniques capable of characterising the nonlinear and damage limits of optical fibres and the resultant information capacity limits. REFERENCES McCarthy, M. The stress sensitivity of polymer optical fibre (POF) based Fabry-Perot sensors formed by two uniform Bragg gratings with finite dimensions is investigated. POF has received high interest in recent years due to its different material properties compared to its silica counterpart. Biocompatibility, a higher failure strain and the highly elastic nature of POF are some of the main advantages. The much lower Young’s modulus of polymer materials compared to silica offers enhanced stress sensitivity to POF based sensors which renders them great candidates for acoustic wave receivers and any kind of force detection. The main drawback in POF technology is perhaps the high fibre loss. In a lossless fibre the sensitivity of an interferometer is proportional to its cavity length. However, the presence of the attenuation along the optical path can significantly reduce the finesse of the Fabry-Perot interferometer and it can negatively affect its sensitivity at some point. The reflectivity of the two gratings used to form the interferometer can be also reduced as the fibre loss increases. In this work, a numerical model is developed to study the performance of POF based Fabry-Perot sensors formed by two uniform Bragg gratings with finite dimensions. Various optical and physical properties are considered such as grating physical length, grating effective length which indicates the point where the light is effectively reflected, refractive index modulation of the grating, cavity length of the interferometer, attenuation and operating wavelength. Using this model, we are able to identify the regimes in which the PMMA based sensor offer enhanced stress sensitivity compared to silica based one.

The annealing effects on strain and stress sensitivity of polymer optical fibre Bragg grating sensors after their photo-inscription are investigated. PMMA optical fibre based Bragg grating sensors are first photo-inscribed and then they were placed into hot water for annealing. Strain, stress and force sensitivity measurements are taken before and after annealing. Parameters such as annealing time and annealing temperature are investigated. The change of the fibre diameter due to water absorption and the annealing process is also considered. The results show that annealing the polymer optical fibre tends to increase the strain, stress and force sensitivity of the photo-inscribed sensor.

In this work we investigate the effect of temperature and diameter size on the response time of a poly(methyl methacrylate) based, polymer optical fibre Bragg grating water activity sensor. The unstrained and etched sensor was placed in an environmental chamber to maintain controlled temperature and humidity conditions and subjected to step changes in humidity. The data show a strong correlation between decrease in diameter and shorter response time. A decrease in response time was also observed with an increase in temperature.

Fibre Bragg gratings at 1568nm have been inscribed in single mode TOPAS microstructured polymer optical fibre to characterise thermal and humidity sensitivity of the fibres in the 1550nm spectral region. Results demonstrate a temperature sensitivity of approximately -36 pm/°C and a humidity sensitivity of no more than - 0.59 pm/%RH. The fibre material appears to be very attractive for long term monitoring of high strains because of its insensitivity to humidity.

Motivated by environmental protection concerns, monitoring the flue gas of thermal power plant is now often mandatory due to the need to ensure that emission levels stay within safe limits. Optical based gas sensing systems are increasingly employed for this purpose, with regression techniques used to relate gas optical absorption spectra to the concentrations of specific gas components of interest (NOx, SO2 etc.). Accurately predicting gas concentrations from absorption spectra remains a challenging problem due to the presence of nonlinearities in the relationships and the high-dimensional and correlated nature of the spectral data. This article proposes a generalized fuzzy linguistic model (GFLM) to address this challenge. The GFLM is made up of a series of “If-Then” fuzzy rules. The absorption spectra are input variables in the rule antecedent. The rule consequent is a general nonlinear polynomial function of the absorption spectra. Model parameters are estimated using least squares and gradient descent optimization algorithms. The performance of GFLM is compared with other traditional prediction models, such as partial least squares, support vector machines, multilayer perceptron neural networks and radial basis function networks, for two real flue gas spectral datasets: one from a coal-fired power plant and one from a gas-fired power plant. The experimental results show that the generalized fuzzy linguistic model has good predictive ability, and is competitive with alternative approaches, while having the added advantage of providing an interpretable model.

Opto-acoustic imaging is a growing field of research in recent years, providing functional imaging of physiological biomarkers, such as the oxygenation of haemoglobin. Piezo electric transducers are the industry standard detector for ultrasonics, but their limited bandwidth, susceptibility to electromagnetic interference and their inversely proportional sensitivity to size all affect the detector performance. Sensors based on polymer optical fibres (POF) are immune to electromagnetic interference, have lower acoustic impedance and a reduced Young's Modulus compared to silica fibres. Furthermore, POF enables the possibility of a wideband sensor and a size appropriate to endoscopy. Micro-structured POF (mPOF) used in an interferometric detector has been shown to be an order of magnitude more sensitive than silica fibre at 1 MHz and 3 times more sensitive at 10 MHz. We present the first opto-acoustic measurements obtained using a 4.7mm PMMA mPOF Bragg grating with a fibre diameter of 130 μm and present the lateral directivity pattern of a PMMA mPOF FBG ultrasound sensor over a frequency range of 1-50 MHz. We discuss the impact of the pattern with respect to the targeted application and draw conclusions on how to mitigate the problems encountered.

Ultrafast laser owns extreme small beam size and high pulse intensity which enable spatial localised modification either on the surface or in the bulk of materials. Therefore, ultrafast laser has been widely used to micromachine optical fibres to alter optical structures. In order to do the precise control of the micromachining process to achieve the desired structure and modification, investigations on laser parameters control should be carried out to make better understanding of the effects in the laser micromachining process. These responses are important to laser machining, most of which are usually unknown during the process. In this work, we report the real time monitored results of the reflection of PMMA based optical fibre Bragg gratings (POFBGs) during excimer ultraviolet laser micromachining process. Photochemical and thermal effects have been observed during the process. The UV radiation was absorbed by the PMMA material, which consequently induced the modifications in both spatial structure and material properties of the POFBG. The POFBG showed a significant wavelength blue shift during laser micromachining. Part of it attributed to UV absorption converted thermal energy whilst the other did not disappear after POFBG cooling off, which attributed to UV induced photodegradation in POF.

This thesis presents the fabrication of fibre gratings in novel optical fibres for sensing applications. Long period gratings have been inscribed into photonic crystal fibre using the electric-arc technique. The resulting sensing characteristics were found to depend on the air-hole geometry of the particular fibre. This provides the potential of designing a fibre to have enhanced sensitivity to a particular measure and whilst removing unwanted cross sensitivities. Fibre Bragg gratings have been fabricated in a variety of polymer optical fibres, including microstructured polymer optical fibre, using a continuous wave helium cadmium laser. The thermal response of the gratings have been characterised and found to have enhanced sensitivity compared to fibre Bragg gratings in silica optical fibre. The increased sensitivity has been harnessed to achieve a grating based device in single mode step index polymer optical fibre by fabricating an electrically tunable fibre Bragg grating. This was accomplished by coating the grating region in a thin layer of copper, which upon application of a direct current, causes a temperature induced Bragg wavelength shift.

We describe the use of high birefringence fibre forming a differential path interferometer for heterodyne fibre optic sensing applications. We firstly recover a low frequency strain amplitude of 1µe at 1Hz applied to a fibre Bragg grating sensor demonstrating a noise limited resolution of around 100ne/vHz. Secondly we interrogate a Mach-Zehnder interferometer sensor using the dual wavelength technique to detect a change in the Mach-Zehnder OPD of 200µm.
