In this work, crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles with variable average crystallite sizes (e.g., 8 nm) and surface areas (e.g., 192 m² g-1) were synthesized in pure anatase phase using H2O2 to reduce the hydrolysis rate of the titanium ions. An isopropanol (IP) solution was employed as the reaction medium. The TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By changing the synthesis parameters it was possible to control nanoparticle size and avoid the coalescence process. A dependence of the Raman wavenumber on the nanocrystal sizes was determined, which is quite useful for a quick check of the size of TiO2 nanocrystals.

The last decade has witnessed an exponential growth of activities in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology worldwide, driven both by the excitement of understanding new science and by the potential hope for applications and economic impacts. The largest activity in this field up to date has been in the synthesis and characterization of new materials consisting of particles with dimensions in the order of a few nanometers, so-called nanocrystalline materials. [1-8] Semiconductor nanomaterials such as III/V or II/VI compound semiconductors exhibit strong quantum confinement behavior in the size range from 1 to 10 nm. Therefore, preparation of high quality semiconductor nanocrystals has been a challenge for synthetic chemists, leading to the recent rapid progress in delivering a wide variety of semiconducting nanomaterials. Semiconductor nanocrystals, also called quantum dots, possess physical properties distinctly different from those of the bulk material. Typically, in the size range from 1 to 10 nm, when the particle size is changed, the band gap between the valence and the conduction band will change, too. In a simple approximation a particle in a box model has been used to describe the phenomenon[9]: at nanoscale dimensions the degenerate energy states of a semiconductor separate into discrete states and the system behaves like one big molecule. The size-dependent transformation of the energy levels of the particles is called “quantum size-effect”. Quantum confinement of both the electron and hole in all three dimensions leads to an increase in the effective bandgap of the material with decreasing crystallite size. Consequently, both the optical absorption and emission of semiconductor nanaocrystals shift to the blue (higher energies) as the size of the particles gets smaller. This color tuning is well documented for CdSe nanocrystals whose absorption and emission covers almost the whole visible spectral range. As particle sizes become smaller the ratio of surface atoms to those in the interior increases, which has a strong impact on particle properties, too. Prominent examples are the low melting point [8] and size/shape dependent pressure resistance [10] of semiconductor nanocrystals. Given the size dependence of particle properties, chemists and material scientists now have the unique opportunity to change the electronic and chemical properties of a material by simply controlling the particle size. In particular, CdSe nanocrystals have been widely investigated. Mainly due to their size-dependent optoelectronic properties [11, 12] and flexible chemical processibility [13], they have played a distinguished role for a number of seminal studies [11, 12, 14, 15]. Potential technical applications have been discussed, too. [8, 16-27] Improvement of the optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanocrystals is still a prominent research topic. One of the most important approaches is fabricating composite type-I core-shell structures which exhibit improved properties, making them attractive from both a fundamental and a practical point of view. Overcoating of nanocrystallites with higher band gap inorganic materials has been shown to increase the photoluminescence quantum yields by eliminating surface nonradiative recombination sites. [28] Particles passivated with inorganic shells are more robust than nanocrystals covered by organic ligands only and have greater tolerance to processing conditions necessary for incorporation into solid state structures or for other applications. Some examples of core-shell nanocrystals reported earlier include CdS on CdSe [29], CdSe on CdS, [30], ZnS on CdS, [31] ZnS on CdSe[28, 32], ZnSe on CdSe [33] and CdS/HgS/CdS [34]. The characterization and preparation of a new core-shell structure, CdSe nanocrystals overcoated by different shells (CdS, ZnS), is presented in chapter 4. Type-I core-shell structures as mentioned above greatly improve the photoluminescence quantum yield and chemical and photochemical stability of nanocrystals. The emission wavelengths of type-I core/shell nanocrystals typically only shows a small red-shift when compared to the plain core nanocrystals. [30, 31, 35] In contrast to type-I core-shell nanocrystals, only few studies have been conducted on colloidal type-II core/shell structures [36-38] which are characterized by a staggered alignment of conduction and valence bands giving rise to a broad tunability of absorption and emission wavelengths, as was shown for CdTe/CdSe core-shell nanocrystals. [36] The emission of type-II core/shell nanocrystals mainly originates from the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs across the core-shell interface leading to a long photoluminescence lifetime. Type-II core/shell nanocrystals are promising with respect to photoconduction or photovoltaic applications as has been discussed in the literature.[39] Novel type-II core-shell structures with ZnTe cores are reported in chapter 5. The recent progress in the shape control of semiconductor nanocrystals opens new fields of applications. For instance, rod shaped CdSe nanocrystals can enhance the photo-electro conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells, [40, 41] and also allow for polarized emission in light emitting diodes. [42, 43] Shape control of anisotropic nanocrystals can be achieved by the use of surfactants, [44, 45] regular or inverse micelles as regulating agents, [46, 47] electrochemical processes, [48] template-assisted [49, 50] and solution-liquid-solution (SLS) growth mechnism. [51-53] Recently, formation of various CdSe nanocrystal shapes has been reported by the groups of Alivisatos [54] and Peng, [55] respectively. Furthermore, it has been reported by the group of Prasad [56] that noble metal nanoparticles can induce anisotropic growth of CdSe nanocrystals at lower temperatures than typically used in other methods for preparing anisotropic CdSe structures. Although several approaches for anisotropic crystal growth have been reported by now, developing new synthetic methods for the shape control of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals remains an important goal. Accordingly, we have attempted to utilize a crystal phase control approach for the controllable synthesis of colloidal ZnE/CdSe (E = S, Se, Te) heterostructures in a variety of morphologies. The complex heterostructures obtained are presented in chapter 6. The unique optical properties of nanocrystals make them appealing as in vivo and in vitro fluorophores in a variety of biological and chemical investigations, in which traditional fluorescence labels based on organic molecules fall short of providing long-term stability and simultaneous detection of multiple emission colours [References]. The ability to prepare water soluble nanocrystals with high stability and quantum yield has led to promising applications in cellular labeling, [57, 58] deep-tissue imaging, [59, 60] and assay labeling [61, 62]. Furthermore, appropriately solubilized nanocrystals have been used as donors in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) couples. [63-65] Despite recent progress, much work still needs to be done to achieve reproducible and robust surface functionalization and develop flexible (bio-) conjugation techniques. Based on multi-shell CdSe nanocrystals, several new solubilization and ligand exchange protocols have been developed which are presented in chapter 7. The organization of this thesis is as follows: A short overview describing synthesis and properties of CdSe nanocrystals is given in chapter 2. Chapter 3 is the experimental part providing some background information about the optical and analytical methods used in this thesis. The following chapters report the results of this work: synthesis and characterization of type-I multi-shell and type-II core/shell nanocrystals are described in chapter 4 and chapter 5, respectively. In chapter 6, a high–yield synthesis of various CdSe architectures by crystal phase control is reported. Experiments about surface modification of nanocrystals are described in chapter 7. At last, a short summary of the results is given in chapter 8.

The work presented in this doctoral thesis is a facile procedure, thermal decomposition, forrnthe synthesis of different types of monodisperse heterodimer M@iron oxide (M= Cu, Co, Nirnand Pt) and single ferrites, MFe2O4 (M= Cu and Co), nanoparticles. In the following chapter, rnwe study the synthesis of these monodiperse nanoparticles with the similar iron precursorrn(iron pentacarbonyl) and different transition metal precursors such as metalrnacetate/acetylacetonate/formate precursors in the presence of various surfactants and solvents.rnAccording to their decomposition temperatures and reducing condition, a specific and suitablernroute was designed for the formation of Metal@Metal oxide or MFe2O4 nanoparticlesrn(Metal/M=transition metal).rnOne of the key purposes in the formation of nanocrystals is the development of syntheticrnpathways for designing and controlling the composition, shape and size of predictedrnnanostructures. The ability to arrange different nanosized domains of metallic and magneticrnmaterials into a single heterodimer nanostructure offers an interesting direction to engineerrnthem with multiple functionalities or enhanced properties of one domain. The presence andrnrole of surfactants and solvents in these reactions result in a variety of nanocrystal shapes. Therncrystalline phase, the growth rate and the orientation of growth parameters along certainrndirections of these structures can be chemically modulated by using suitable surfactants. In allrnnovel reported heterodimer nanostructures in this thesis, initially metals were preformed andrnthen by the injection of iron precursor in appropriate temperature, iron oxide nanoparticlesrnwere started to nucleate on the top or over the surfaces of metal nanoparticles. Ternary phasesrnof spherical CuxFe3-xO4 and CoFe2O4 ferrites nanoparticles were designed to synthesis just byrnlittle difference in diffusion step with the formation of mentioned phase separated heterodimerrnnanoparticles. In order to use these magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical and catalysisrnapplications, they should be transferred into the water phase solution, therefore they werernfunctionalized by a multifunctional polymeric ligand. These functionalized nanoparticles werernstable against aggregation and precipitation in aqueous media for a long time. Magneticrnresonance imaging and catalytic reactivities are two promising applications which have beenrnutilized for these magnetic nanoparticles in this thesis.rnThis synthetic method explained in the following chapters can be extended to the synthesis ofrnother heterostructured nanomaterials such as Ni@MnO or M@M@iron oxide (M=transitionrnmetal) or to use these multidomain particles as building blocks for higher order structures.

The thesis is focused on the development of a method for the synthesis of silicon nanocrystals with different sizes, narrow size distribution, good optical properties and stability in air. The resulting silicon nanocrystals have been covalently functionalized with different chromophores with the aim to exploit the new electronic and chemical properties that emerge from the interaction between silicon nanocrystal surface and ligands. The purpose is to use these chromophores as light harvesting antennae, increasing the optical absorption of silicon nanocrystals. Functionalized silicon nanocrystals have been characterized with different analytical techniques leading to a good knowledge of optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots.

The use of biopolymers obtained from renewable resources is currently growing and they have found unique applications as matrices and/or nanofillers in ‘green’ nanocomposites. Grafting of polymer chains to the surface of cellulose nanofillers was also studied to promote the dispersion of cellulose nanocrystals in hydrophobic polymer matrices. The aim of this study was to modify the surface of cellulose nanocrystals by grafting from L-lactide by ring-opening polymerization in order to improve the compatibility of nanocrystals and hydrophobic polymer matrices. The effectiveness of the grafting was evidenced by the long-term stability of a suspension of poly(lactic acid)-grafted cellulose nanocrystals in chloroform, by the presence of the carbonyl peak in modified samples determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and by the modification in C1s contributions observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. No modification in nanocrystal shape was observed in birefringence studies and transmission electron microscopy.

A novel method to prepare mesoporous zirconia was developed. The synthesis was carried out in the presence of PEO surfactants via solid-state reaction. The materials exhibit strong diffraction peak at low 2-theta angle and their nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are typical of IV type with H3 hysteresis loops. The pore structure examined by TEM can be described as wormhole domains. The tetragonal zirconia nanocrystals are uniform in size (around 1.5nm) and their pores center at around 4.6nm. The zirconia nanocrystal growth is mainly via an aggregation mechanism. This study also reveals that the PEO surfactants can interact with the Zr-O-Zr framework to reinforce the thermal stability of zirconia. The ratio of NaOH to ZrOCl2, crystallization and calcination temperature play an important role in the synthesis of mesoporous zirconia.

Multiple emission peaks have been observed from surface passivated PbS nanocrystals displaying strong quantum confinement. The emission spectra are shown to be strongly dependent on the excited-state parity. We also find that intraband energy relaxation from initial states excited far above the band-edge is nearly three orders of magnitude slower than that found in other nanocrystal quantum dots, providing evidence of inefficient energy relaxation via phonon emission. The initial-state parity dependence of the photoluminescent emission properties suggests that energy relaxation from the higher excited states occurs via a radiative cascade, analogous to energy relaxation in atomic systems. Such radiative cascade emission is possible from ideal zero-dimensional semiconductors, where electronic transitions can be decoupled from phonon modes.

We describe a single step method to synthesise lead sulphide (PbS) nanocrystals directly in the conjugated polymer poly (2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV). This method allows size control of the nanocrystal via co-solvent ratios. We find good agreement between nanocrystal sizes determined by transmission electron microscopy and sizes theoretically determined from the absorption edge of the nanocrystals. Finally we show that this synthesis technique is not restricted to MEH-PPV and demonstrate that nanocrystals can be grown in Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT). (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A new design of an optical resonator for generation of single-photon pulses is proposed. The resonator is made of a cylindrical or spherical piece of a polymer squeezed between two flat dielectric mirrors. The mode characteristics of this resonator are calculated numerically. The numerical analysis is backed by a physical explanation. The decay time and the mode volume of the fundamental mode are sufficient for achieving more than 96% probability of generating a single-photon in a single-mode. The corresponding requirement for the reflectivity of the mirrors (similar to 99.9%) and the losses in the polymer ( 100 dB/m) are quite modest. The resonator is suitable for single-photon generation based on optical pumping of a single quantum system such as an organic molecule, a diamond nanocrystal, or a semiconductor quantum dot if they are imbedded in the polymer. The present study gives a contribution to the knowledge on the Na-feldspar and plagioclases, extending the database of the Raman spectra of plagioclases with different chemical compositions and structural orders. This information may be used for the future planetary explorations by “rovers”, for the investigation of ceramics nanocrystal materials and for the mineralogical phase identification in sediments. Na-feldspar and plagioclase solid solution have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy in order to determine the relationships between the vibrational changes and the plagioclase crystal chemistry and structure. We focused on the Raman micro-spectroscopy technique, being a non-destructive method, suited for contactless analysis with high spatial resolution. Chemical and structural analyses have been performed on natural samples to test the usefulness of Raman spectroscopy as a tool in the study of the pressure-induced structural deformations, the disordering processes due to change in the Al-Si distribution in the tetrahedral sites and, finally, in the determination of the anorthitic content (Anx) in plagioclase minerals. All the predicted 39 Ag Raman active modes have been identified and assigned to specific patterns of atomic vibrational motion. A detailed comparison between experimental and computed Raman spectra has been performed and previous assignments have been revised, solving some discrepancies reported in recent literature. The ab initio calculation at the hybrid HF/DFT level with the WC1LYP Hamiltonian has proven to give excellent agreement between calculated and experimentally measured Raman wavenumbers and intensities in triclinic minerals. A short digression on the 36 infrared active modes of Na-feldspar has been done too. The identification of all 39 computed Raman modes in the experimentally measured spectra of the fully ordered Na-feldspar, known as low albite, along with the detailed description of each vibrational mode, has been essential to extend the comparative analysis to the high pressure and high temperature structural forms of albite, which reflect the physical–chemical conditions of the hosting rocks. The understanding of feldspar structure response to pressure and temperature is crucial in order to constrain crustal behaviour. The compressional behaviour of the Na-feldspar has been investigated for the first time by Raman spectroscopy. The absence of phase transitions and the occurrence of two secondary compression mechanisms acting at different pressures have been confirmed. Moreover, Raman data suggest that the internal structural changes are confined to a small pressure interval, localized around 6 GPa, not spread out from 4 to 8 GPa as suggested by previous X-rays studies on elasticity. The dominant compression mechanisms act via tetrahedral tilting, while the T-O bond lengths remain nearly constant at moderate compressional regimes. At the spectroscopic level, this leads to the strong pressure dependencies of T-O-T bending modes, as found for the four modes at 478, 508, 578 and 815 cm-1. The Al-Si distribution in the tetrahedral sites affects also the Raman spectrum of Na-feldspar. In particular, peak broadening is more sensitive than peak position to changes in the degree of order. Raman spectroscopy is found to be a good probe for local ordering, in particular being sensitive to the first annealing steps, when the macroscopic order parameter is still high. Even though Raman data are scattered and there are outliers in the estimated values of the degree of order, the average peak linewidths of the Na-feldspar characteristic doublet band, labelled here as υa and υb, as a function of the order parameter Qod show interesting trends: both peak linewidths linearly increase until saturation. From Qod values lower than 0.6, peak broadening is no more affected by the Al-Si distribution. Moreover, the disordering process is found to be heterogeneous. SC-XRD and Raman data have suggested an inter-crystalline inhomogeneity of the samples, i.e., the presence of regions with different defect density on the micrometric scale. Finally, the influence of Ca-Na substitution in the plagioclase Raman spectra has been investigated. Raman spectra have been collected on a series of well characterized natural, low structural plagioclases. The variations of the Raman modes as a function of the chemical composition and the structural order have been determined. The number of the observed Raman bands at each composition gives information about the unit-cell symmetry: moving away from the C1 structures, the number of the Raman bands enhances, as the number of formula units in the unit cell increases. The modification from an “albite-like” Raman spectrum to a more “anorthite-like” spectrum occurs from sample An78 onwards, which coincides with the appearance of c reflections in the diffraction patterns of the samples. The evolution of the Raman bands υa and υb displays two changes in slope at ~An45 and ~An75: the first one occurs between e2 and e1 plagioclases, the latter separates e1 and I1 plagioclases with only b reflections in their diffraction patterns from I1 and P1 samples having b and c reflections too. The first variation represents exactly the e2→e1 phase transitions, whereas the second one corresponds in good approximation to the C1→I1 transition, which has been determined at ~An70 by previous works. The I1→P1 phase transition in the anorthite-rich side of the solid solution is not highlighted in the collected Raman spectra. Variations in peak broadening provide insights into the behaviour of the order parameter on a local scale, suggesting an increase in the structural disorder within the solid solution, as the structures have to incorporate more Al atoms to balance the change from monovalent to divalent cations. All the information acquired on these natural plagioclases has been used to produce a protocol able to give a preliminary estimation of the chemical composition of an unknown plagioclase from its Raman spectrum. Two calibration curves, one for albite-rich plagioclases and the other one for the anorthite-rich plagioclases, have been proposed by relating the peak linewidth of the most intense Raman band υa and the An content. It has been pointed out that the dependence of the composition from the linewidth can be obtained only for low structural plagioclases with a degree of order not far away from the references. The proposed tool has been tested on three mineralogical samples, two of meteoric origin and one of volcanic origin. Chemical compositions by Raman spectroscopy compare well, within an error of about 10%, with those obtained by elemental techniques. Further analyses on plagioclases with unknown composition will be necessary to validate the suggested method and introduce it as routine tool for the determination of the chemical composition from Raman data in planetary missions.

This thesis describes the design and synthesis of a variety of functionalised phosphine oxides and sulfides, based on the structure of trioctylphosphine oxide, synthesised for the purpose of surface modification of quantum dots. The ability of the ligands to modify the surface chemistry via displacement of the original hexadecylamine capping layer of quantum dots was evaluated. Finally the surface modified quantum dots were investigated for enhancement in their inherent properties and improved compatibility with the various applications for which they were initially designed. Upon the commencement of research involving quantum dots it became apparent that more information on their behaviour and interaction with the environment was required. The limits of the inherent stability of hexadecylamine capped quantum dots were investigated by exposure to a number of different environments. The effect upon the stability of the quantum dots was monitored by changes in the photoluminescence ability of their cores. Subtle differences between different batches of quantum dots were observed and the necessity to account for these in future applications noted. Lastly the displacement of the original hexadecylamine coating with the "designer" functionalised ligands was evaluated to produce a set of conditions that would result in the best possible surface modification. A general procedure was elucidated however it was discovered that each displacement still required slight adjustment by consideration of the other factors such as the difference in ligand structure and the individuality of the various batches of quantum dots. This thesis also describes a procedure for the addition of a protective layer to the surface of quantum dots by cross-linking the functionalised ligands bound to the surface via an acyclic diene metathesis polymerisation. A detailed description of the problems encountered in the analysis of these materials combined with the use of novel techniques such as diffusion ordered spectroscopy is provided as a means to overcome the limitations encountered. Finally a demonstration of the superior stability, upon exposure to a range of aggressive environments of these protected materials compared with those before cross-linking provided physical proof of the cross-linking process and the advantages of the cross-linking modification. Finally this thesis includes the presentation of initial work into the production of luminescent nanocrystal encoded resin beads for the specific use in solid phase combinatorial chemistry. Demonstration of the successful covalent incorporation of quantum dots into the polymeric matrices of non-functionalised and functionalised resin beads is described. Finally by preliminary work to address and overcome the possible limitations that may be encountered in the production and general employment of these materials in combinatorial techniques is given.

The aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of alcohols represents an environmentally benign and atom efficient chemical valorisation route to commercially important allylic aldehydes, such as crotonaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde, which find application in pesticides, fragrances and food additives. Palladium nanoparticles are highly active and selective heterogeneous catalysts for such oxidative dehydrogenations, permitting the use of air (or dioxygen) as a green oxidant in place of stoichiometric chromate permanganate saltsor H2O2. Here we discuss how time-resolved, in-situ X-ray spectroscopies (XAS and XPS) reveal dynamic restructuring of dispersed Pd nanoparticles and Pd single-crystals in response to changing reaction environments, and thereby identify surface PdO as the active species responsible for palladium catalysed crotyl alcohol selox (Figure 1); on-stream reduction to palladium metal under oxygen-poor regimes thus appears the primary cause of catalyst deactivation. This insight has guided the subsequent application of surfactant-templating and inorganic nanocrystal methodologies to optimize the density of desired active PdO sites for the selective oxidation of natural products such as sesquiterpenoids.

Background Cell-cell interactions are a basic principle for the organization of tissues and organs allowing them to perform integrated functions and to organize themselves spatially and temporally. Peptidic molecules secreted by neurons and epithelial cells play fundamental roles in cell-cell interactions, acting as local neuromodulators, neurohormones, as well as endocrine and paracrine messengers. Allatotropin (AT) is a neuropeptide originally described as a regulator of Juvenile Hormone synthesis, which plays multiple neural, endocrine and myoactive roles in insects and other organisms. Methods A combination of immunohistochemistry using AT-antibodies and AT-Qdot nanocrystal conjugates was used to identify immunoreactive nerve cells containing the peptide and epithelial-muscular cells targeted by AT in Hydra plagiodesmica. Physiological assays using AT and AT- antibodies revealed that while AT stimulated the extrusion of the hypostome in a dose-response fashion in starved hydroids, the activity of hypostome in hydroids challenged with food was blocked by treatments with different doses of AT-antibodies. Conclusions AT antibodies immunolabeled nerve cells in the stalk, pedal disc, tentacles and hypostome. AT-Qdot conjugates recognized epithelial-muscular cell in the same tissues, suggesting the existence of anatomical and functional relationships between these two cell populations. Physiological assays indicated that the AT-like peptide is facilitating food ingestion. Significance Immunochemical, physiological and bioinformatics evidence advocates that AT is an ancestral neuropeptide involved in myoregulatory activities associated with meal ingestion and digestion.
