Films with Fe–25 at.% Ge composition are deposited by the process of laser ablation on single crystal NaCl and Cu substrates at room temperature. Both the vapor and liquid droplets generated in this process are quenched on the substrate. The microstructures of the embedded droplets show size as well as composition dependence. The hierarchy of phase evolution from amorphous to body-centered cubic (bcc) to DO3 has been observed as a function of size. Some of the medium-sized droplets also show direct formation of ordered DO19 phase from the starting liquid. The evolution of disordered bcc structure in some of the droplets indicates disorder trapping during liquid to solid transformation. The microstructural evolution is analyzed on the basis of heat transfer mechanisms and continuous growth model in the solidifying droplets.

Amorphous thin films of different Al–Fe compositions were produced by plasma/vapor quenching during pulsed laser deposition. The chosen compositions Al72Fe28, Al40Fe60, and Al18Fe82 correspond to Al5Fe2 and B2-ordered AlFe intermetallic compounds and α–Fe solid solution, respectively. The films contained fine clusters that increased with iron content. The sequences of phase evolution observed in the heating stage transmission electron microscopy studies of the pulsed laser ablation deposited films of Al72Fe28, Al40Fe60, and Al18Fe82 compositions showed evidence of composition partitioning during crystallization for films of all three compositions. This composition partitioning, in turn, resulted in the evolution of phases of compositions richer in Fe, as well as richer in Al, compared to the overall film composition in each case. The evidence of Fe-rich phases was the B2 phase in Al72Fe28 film, the L12- and DO3-ordered phases in Al40Fe60 film, and the hexagonal ε–Fe in the case of the Al18Fe82 film. On the other hand, the Al-rich phases were Al13Fe4 for both Al72Fe28 and Al40Fe60 films and DO3 and Al5Fe2 phases in the case of Al18Fe82 film. We believe that this tendency of composition partitioning during crystallization from amorphous phase is a consequence of the tendency of clustering of the Fe atoms in the amorphous phase during nucleation. The body-centered cubic phase has a nucleation advantage over other metastable phases for all three compositions. The amorphization of Al18Fe82 composition and the evolution of L12 and ε–Fe phases in the Al–Fe system were new observations of this work.

Hybrid inorganic-organic framework materials exhibit unique properties that can be advantageously tuned through choice of the inorganic and organic components and by control of the crystal structure. We present a new hydrothermally prepared 3D hybrid framework, [Mn(2-methylsuccinate)](n) (1), comprising alternating 2D manganese oxide sheets and isolated MnO(6) octahedra, pillared via syn, anti-syn carboxylates. Powder magnetic characterization shows that the compound is a homospin Mn(II) ferrimagnet below 2.4 K. The easy-axis is revealed by single-crystal magnetic susceptibility studies and a magnetic structure is proposed. Anisotropic elastic moduli and hardness, observed through nanoindentation on differing crystal facets, were correlated with specific structural features. Such measurements of anisotropy are not commonly undertaken, yet allow for a more comprehensive understanding of structure-property relationships.

Ultrasonic C-Scan is used very often to detect flaws and defects in the composite components resulted during fabrication and damages resulting from service conditions. Evaluation and characterization of defects and damages of composites require experience and good understanding of the material as they are distinctly different in composition and behavior as compared to conventional metallic materials. The failure mechanisms in composite materials are quite complex. They involve the interaction of matrix cracking, fiber matrix interface debonding, fiber pullout, fiber fracture and delamination. Generally all of them occur making the stress and failure analysis very complex. Under low-velocity impact loading delamination is observed to be a major failure mode. In composite materials the ultrasonic waves suffer high acoustic attenuation and scattering effect, thus making data interpretation difficult. However these difficulties can be overcome to a greater extent by proper selection of probe, probe parameter settings like pulse width, pulse amplitude, pulse repetition rate, delay, blanking, gain etc., and data processing which includes image processing done on the image obtained by the C-Scan.

A simple, rapid, and surfactant-free synthesis of crystalline copper nanostructures has been carried out through microwave irradiation of a solution of copper acetylacetonate in benzyl alcohol. The structures are found to be stable against oxidation in ambient air for several months. High-resolution electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals that the copper samples comprise nanospheres measuring about 150 nm in diameter, each made of copper nanocrystals similar to 7 nm in extension. The nanocrystals are densely packed into spherical aggregates, the driving force being minimization of surface area and surface energy, and are thus immune to oxidation in ambient air. Such aggregates can also be adherently supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 when these substrates are immersed in the irradiated solution. The air-stable copper nanostructures exhibit surface enhanced Raman scattering, as evidenced by the detection of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid at 10(-6) M concentrations.

The morphology of nanocrystalline Co3O4 synthesized through microwave irradiation of a solution of a cobalt complex is found to depend reproducibly on the conditions of synthesis and, in particular, on the composition of the solvent used. Despite the rapidity of the process, oriented aggregation occurs under certain conditions, depending on solvent composition. Annealing the oriented samples leads to microstructures with significant porosity, rendering the material suitable as electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. Electrochemical analysis of the oxide samples was carried out in 0.1M Na2SO4 electrolyte vs. Ag/AgCl electrode. A stable specific capacitance of 221 F/g was measured for a meso-porous sample displaying oriented aggregation. Stability of these oxide materials were checked for longer charge-discharge cycling. This research was aimed at determining optimum Cu content for the alloy design of SUS 30411 austenitic steels having enhanced heat and corrosion resistance. Samples of the steel containing 1, 3, and 5 wt.% Cu were subjected to repeated heating and cooling to a temperature of 760 degrees C and to a maximum of 15 cycles. Hardness measurement and the corrosion behaviour in 1M NaCl solution were evaluated. The hardness increases with an increase in the number of heating cycles for the three compositions. The hardening response to the thermal cycles is however higher for the 1 wt.% Cu composition and decreases with an increase in the Cu wt.%. The SUS 30411 steel containing 3 wt.% Cu exhibited the least susceptibility to corrosion in the 1M NaCl solution irrespective of the number of heating cycles. The SUS 30411 steel containing 1 wt.% Cu was found to exhibit the highest susceptibility to corrosion for all heating cycles compared.

The present paper is aimed to understand the sub-processes triggered by rapid heating during spark plasma sintering as well as to assess the extent to which densification and properties of metallic materials can be enhanced using such superfast consolidation process. Using nanocrystalline Cu-Pb as a model system, the influence of Pb as well as TiB2 addition on the densification mechanisms and properties are discussed. Importantly, a high hardness of 2 GPa is achieved in Cu-based nanocomposites. (C) 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The generation of renewable energy through photocatalysis is an attractive option to utilize the abundantly available solar radiation for a sustainable future. Photocatalysis refers to charge-carrier, i.e. electron and hole, mediated reactions occurring on a semiconductor surface in presence of ultraviolet or visible light radiation. Photocatalysis is a well established advanced oxidation technique for the decontamination of toxic organic pollutants to CO2 and H2O. However, the generation of energy in the form of hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels and electricity via photocatalysis is an upcoming field with great many technical challenges towards practical implementation. This review will describe the fundamental reaction mechanism of (i) photocatalytic water splitting, (ii) photocatalytic H-2 generation in presence of different sacrificial agents, (iii) H-2 and electricity generation in a photofuel cell, (iv) photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and useful chemicals, and (v) photocatalytic water-gas shift reaction. A historic and recent perspective of the above conversion techniques, especially with regard to the development of TiO2-based and non-TiO2 materials is provided. The activity of different materials for the above reactions based on quantifiers like reaction rate, quantum yield and incident-photon-to-current efficiency is compared, and key design considerations of the ``best'' photocatalyst or photoelectrode is outlined. An overall assessment of the research area indicates that the presently achieved quantum efficiencies for the above reactions are rather moderate in the visible region, and the goal is to develop a catalyst that absorbs visible radiation, provides good charge-carrier separation, and exhibits high stability for long periods of usage.

We report non-saturating linear magnetoresistance (MR) in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterointerface in the strongly insulating regime. We achieve this by driving the gate voltage below the pinch-off point of the device and operating it in the non-equilibrium regime with high source-drain bias. Remarkably, the magnitude of MR is as large as 500% per Tesla with respect to resistance at zero magnetic field, thus dwarfing most non-magnetic materials which exhibit this linearity. Its primary advantage over most other materials is that both linearity and the enormous magnitude are retained over a broad temperature range (0.3 K to 10 K), thus making it an attractive candidate for cryogenic sensor applications.

An electrochemical lead ion sensor has been developed by modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE) using polypyrrole functionalized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA-PPy) containing carboxyl group. The electrochemical response of Pb2+ ion on the IDA-PPy modified CPE has been evaluated and the controling parameters have been optimized using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The IDA-PPy modified CPE shows a linear correlation for Pb2+ concentrations in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-9) M and the lower detection limit of Pb2+ has been found to be 9.6 x 10(-9) M concentration. Other tested metal ions, namely Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+, do not exhibit any voltammetric stripping response below 1 x 10(-7) M concentration. However, the Pb2+ response is affected in the presence of molar equivalents or higher concentrations of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ ions in binary systems with Pb2+, consequent to their ability to bind with iminodiacetic acid, while Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ do not interfere at all. A good correlation has been observed between the lead concentrations as analyzed by DPASV using IDA-PPy modified CPE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for a lead containing industrial effluent sample. Towards fundamental studies and potential applications, achieving precise control over the generation of defects in pure ZnO nanocrystals has been always intriguing. Herein, we explored the rote of spectator ions (Co2+ and Ni2+) in influencing the functional properties of ZnO nanocrystals. The crystalline quality, phase purity, and composition of as-prepared samples were thoroughly established by powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (TEM and STEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Despite the presence of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in the reaction mixture, STEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XPS analysis, and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that the ZnO nanocrystals formed are dopant-free. Even so, their luminescence and magnetic properties were substantially different from those of pure ZnO nanocrystals synthesized using a similar methodology. We attribute the origin of these properties to the defects associated with ZnO nanocrystals generated under different but optimized conditions.

Retaining the morphology of gallium oxide nanostructures during structural transformations or after doping with lanthanide ions is not facile. Here we report on the sonochemical synthesis of nearly monodisperse similar to 550 nm long nano-spindles of undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH. The transformation of as-prepared undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH powders into the corresponding undoped and La-doped Ga2O3 phases (alpha and beta) was achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under optimized conditions. The formation of gallium oxide nano-spindles is explained by invoking the phenomenon of oriented attachment, as amply supported by electron microscopy. Interestingly, the morphology of the gallium oxide nano-spindles remained conserved even after doping them with more than 1.4 at% of La3+ ions. Such robust structural stability could be attributed to the oriented attachment-type growth observed in the nano-spindles. The as-prepared samples and the corresponding annealed ones were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, and STEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, photoluminescence from the single-crystalline undoped and La-doped beta-Ga2O3 was explored.

Synthesis of size selective monodispersed nanoparticles particularly intermetallic with well-defined compositions represents a challenge. This paper presents a way for the synthesis of intermetallic AuCu nanoparticles as a model system. We show that reduction of Au and Cu precursors is sensitive to the ratio of total molar concentrations of surfactant to metal precursors. A careful design of experiments to understand the kinetics of the reduction process reveals initial formation of seed nanoparticles of pure Au. Reduction of Cu occurs on the surface of the seed followed by diffusion to yield AuCu. This understanding allows us to develop a two step synthesis where the precise size controlled seed of Au nanoparticles produced in the first step is used in the second step reaction mixture as an Au precursor to allow deposition and interdiffusion of Cu that yields size selected AuCu intermetallics of sub 10 nm sizes.

In this study, thin films of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) have been grown by the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique on stainless steel substrate at two preferred temperatures (450 degrees C and 500 degrees C), using cobalt acetylacetonate dihydrate as precursor. Spherical as well as columnar microstructures of Co3O4 have been observed under controlled growth conditions. Further investigations reveal these films are phase-pure, well crystallized and carbon-free. High-resolution TEM analysis confirms that each columnar structure is a continuous stack of minute crystals. Comparative study between these Co3O4 films grown at 450 degrees C and 500 degrees C has been carried out for their application as negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries. Our method of electrode fabrication leads to a coating of active material directly on current collector without any use of external additives. A high specific capacity of 1168 micro Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) has been measured reproducibly for the film deposited at 500 degrees C with columnar morphology. Further, high rate capability is observed when cycled at different current densities. The Co3O4 electrode with columnar structure has a specific capacity 38% higher than the electrode with spherical microstructure (grown at 450 degrees C). Impedance measurements on the Co3O4 electrode grown at 500 degrees C also carried out to study the kinetics of the electrode process. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
