This article begins with the premise that cultural studies has neglected questions about religion and faith. Through an analysis of a discussion in an online Buddhist forum whereby the participants debate the issue of faith vis-a-vis knowledge, the paper explicates how Buddhism negotiates dominant cultural formations and evolves against various contexts of social struggles. The analysis also reveals how the participants articulate a vernacular theory of faith to rethink the relationships between reason, religion, faith, knowledge, and ethics. The article demonstrates how an engagement with a religious discourse elucidates themes that are of interest to cultural studies’ critical project, and argues that cultural studies has an ethical responsibility to engage with religion and address matters of faith.

Abstract:The disproportionate focus on classroom teachers and their instruction—teacher effectiveness—in order to confront and address under-achievement and disadvantage appears as a contemporary education policy theme in Australia. Phrases such as ‘high performing schooling systems’, ‘the best teachers’, ‘high performing countries’, ‘quality teaching’, ‘under-performing schools’, ‘the right change’, ‘operationally feasible’, ‘targeting of reforms’, ‘degrees of under-performance’, ‘educational drivers’, ‘teacher quality and improved teaching’ and ‘external standards and governance’ are constantly mentioned and given continual attention and prominence by policy-makers. The paper questions and critiques a policy-making direction that uses teacher effectiveness research to force and steer reform in education. The distinctive and narrow concern with teacher effectiveness works to the specific exclusion of breadth and scope concerning debate about broader education related issues and questions, for example, matters of student achievement, exclusion and disadvantage. This article uses a qualitative research approach informed by critical theory to examine three influential private sector reports on education and schooling: The McKinsey Report ( 2007 )—How the world’s best-performing school systems come out on top, The Nous Group ( 2011 )—Schooling Challenges and Opportunities and The Grattan Institute ( 2012 )—Catching up: Learning from the best school systems in East Asia. The article subjects the reports to close critical scrutiny and examination and finds that classroom teachers are positioned so that their specific and explicit instruction becomes the differentiating ‘variable’ in matters of student achievement and success.

Microcompression tests were performed on monolithic Cu and Fe thin films and a Cu/Fe multilayer that had each individual layer of 200 nm thick, to understand the mechanical behaviour of multiple nanolayers. The micron-sized pillars were prepared by focused-ion beam (FIB) technique and compressed with a flat punch in a nanoindenter. The flow curves of the monolithic Cu and Fe thin films and Cu/Fe multilayer were extracted from the microcompression tests. The monolithic Cu thin film bulges in the top region of the pillar, while the Fe thin film cracks due to its columnar grain structure. For the Cu/Fe multilayer, the ductile Cu layers accommodate the majority of plastic deformation upon compression, while cracking in the Fe layers leads to the failure of the multilayer. Finite element models of microcompression tests were also developed to provide insights into the deformation behaviours of the multilayer and monolithic thin films. © 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This study has been prepared with the aim of bringing together the main research lines that seek to identify and convey the value of participating in initiatives like the ISE. This document is structured on three major fronts. On the first front, we conducted a survey to collect the main data on SRI trends in the two largest market niches: Europe and the United States, besides results from an MIT research study conducted among executives on the value of sustainability in the current market. Next, we carried out a non-exhaustive survey on academic studies that seek to identify the intangible and tangible gains achieved by companies through their participation in the ISE or related initiatives. Finally, we present the results of a survey done with major Brazilian pension funds aimed at investigating the knowledge of the ISE and how it could be used in their analysis and decision-making process.

This study describes the synthesis, IR, (1)H, and (13)C{(1)H} NMR spectroscopic as well the thermal characterization of the new palladium(II) pyrazolyl complexes [PdCl(2)(HmPz)(2)] 1, [PdBr(2)(HmPz)(2)] 2, [PdI(2)(HmPz)(2)] 3, [Pd(SCN)(2)(HmPz)(2)] 4 {HmPz = 4-methylpyrazole}. The residues of the thermal decomposition were identified as Pd(0) by X-ray powder diffraction. From the initial decomposition temperatures, the thermal stability of the complexes can be ordered in the sequence: 1 > 2 > 4 a parts per thousand 3. The cytotoxic activities of the complexes and the ligand were investigated against two murine cancer cell lines: mammary adenocarcinoma (LM3) and lung adenocarcinoma (LP07) and compared to cisplatin under the same experimental conditions.

The pyrazole ligand 3,5-dimethyl-4-iodopyrazole (HdmIPz) has been used to obtain a series of palladium(II) complexes (1-4) of the type [PdX(2)(HdmIPz)(2)] {X = Cl(-) (1); Br(-) (2); I(-) (3); SCN(-) (4)}. All compounds have been isolated, purified, and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, (1)H and (13)C{(1)H}-NMR experiments, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermogravimetry (TG). The TG/DTA curves showed that the compounds released ligands in the temperature range 137-605 A degrees C, yielding metallic palladium as final residue. The complexes and the ligand together with cisplatin have been tested in vitro by MTT assay for their cytotoxicity against two murine cancer cell lines: mammary adenocarcinoma (LM3) and lung adenocarcinoma (LP07).

There are many reports of cryptosporidial infection in ostriches, but none with molecular characterization of the isolates. A study was undertaken for the characterization of a Brazilian Cryptosporidium sp. ostrich isolate by using molecular phylogenetic analysis of fragments of the 18S ribosonial DNA. heat-shock Protein (lisp) 70 coding gene, and actin coding gene. Biological studies were accomplished by the experimental inoculation of chickens via oral or intratracheal routes with fresh ostrich Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts. Molecular analysis of nuceotide sequences of the 3 genes by using neighbor-joining and parsimony methods grouped the ostrich isolate as a sister taxon of Crypiosporidium badeyi and showed that the os(rich isolate is genetically distinct from all other known Cryptosporidium species or genotypes. None of the inoculated chickens developed infection as determined by mucosal smears. histology, and fecal screening for oocysts. Although biological and molecular Studies indicate that the ostrich Cryptosporidium is a new species, further Studies regarding morphological. biological, and molecular characteristics of other ostrich isolates are required to confirm the species status of the ostrich Cryprosporidium.

This work describes the synthesis, characterization, and the thermal behavior investigation of four palladium(II) complexes with general formulae [PdX(2)(mba)(2)], in which mba = N-methylbenzylamine and X = OAc(-) (1), Cl(-) (2), Br(-) (3) or I(-) (4). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared vibrational spectroscopy, and (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance. The stoichiometry of the complexes was established by means of elemental analysis and thermogravimetry (TG). TG/DTA curves showed that the thermodecomposition of the four complexes occurred in 3-4 steps, leading to metallic palladium as final residue. The palladium content found in all curves was in agreement with the mass percentages calculated for the complexes. The following thermal stability sequence was found: 3 > 2 > 4 > 1. The geometry optimization of 1, 2, 3, and 4, calculated using the DFT/B3LYP method, yielded a slightly distorted square planar environment around the Pd(II) ion made by two anionic groups and two nitrogen atoms from the mba ligand (N1 and N2), in a trans-relationship.
