Objectives This qualitative study aims at understanding the consequences of body deconstruction through mastectomy on corporality and identity in women with breast cancer. Design Nineteen women were contacted through the hospital. All had to undergo mastectomy. Some were offered immediate breast reconstruction, others, because of cancer treatments, had no planned reconstruction. A qualitative reflexive methodological background was chosen. Method Women were invited to participate in three semi-structured interviews, one shortly before or after mastectomy, and the other interviews later in their illness courses, after surgery. All interviews were transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was performed. The analysis of the first interview of each woman is presented in this article. Results Mastectomy provokes a painful experience of body deconstruction. Even when immediate reconstruction is proposed, contrasted feelings and dissonance are expressed when comparing the former healthy body to the present challenged body entity. Body transformations are accompanied with experiences of mutilation, strangeness, and modify the physical, emotional social, symbolic and relational dimensions of the woman's gendered identity. Although the opportunity of breast reconstruction is seen as a possible recovery of a lost physical symmetry and body integrity, grieving the past body and integrating a new corporality leads to a painful identity crisis. Conclusion With mastectomy, the roots of the woman's identity are challenged, leading to a re-evaluation of her existential values. The consequences of mastectomy transform the woman's corporality and embodiment, and question her identity. Psychological support is discussed in the perspective of our results.

Jean Rouch (1917-2004) és una referència ineludible en la història del cinema etnogràfic. Especialista en els rituals de possessió a l'Àfrica de l'Oest i clarament influenciat pel cinema de Flaherty i de Vertov, Rouch va desenvolupar un mètode i una teoria cinematogràfica que s'oposaven frontalment als principis del positivisme científic així com a les teories objectivistes del cinema etnogràfic. Més concretament, Rouch va posar en pràctica durant el seu treball de camp una "antropologia compartida", basada en una concepció no jerarquitzada de les relacions entre l'antropòleg i la comunitat estudiada, i va situar la idea de ¿reflexivitat¿ com a eix principal del coneixement científic i del cinema etnogràfic. Crític amb la clàssica distinció entre art i ciència, el director francès sempre va reivindicar la creativitat, l'experimentació i la llibertat d'estil com a punts essencials de la recerca etnogràfica.

L'article analitza la celebració de l'Id-al-ad·ha o "festa del sacrifici", ritual protagonitzat per la comunitat de musulmans el desè dia del mes de dhu-al-hijja. Es parteix d'exemples etnogràfics procedents del context de la diàspora musulmana al Tarragonès i de la societat emiral mauritana. El fenomen s'analitza des dels rols que els actors exerceixen en el ritual. L'argumentació vol subratllar la idea que tot ritual s'inscriu en un context social específic del qual n'és producte alhora que modulador, per mitjà del que Roy Rappaport anomena "missatges autoreferencials". Això no exclou l'existència d'un conjunt de denominadors comuns o "missatges canònics" entre les diverses pràctiques rituals referides.

BACKGROUND: Human speech is greatly influenced by the speakers' affective state, such as sadness, happiness, grief, guilt, fear, anger, aggression, faintheartedness, shame, sexual arousal, love, amongst others. Attentive listeners discover a lot about the affective state of their dialog partners with no great effort, and without having to talk about it explicitly during a conversation or on the phone. On the other hand, speech dysfunctions, such as slow, delayed or monotonous speech, are prominent features of affective disorders. METHODS: This project was comprised of four studies with healthy volunteers from Bristol (English: n = 117), Lausanne (French: n = 128), Zurich (German: n = 208), and Valencia (Spanish: n = 124). All samples were stratified according to gender, age, and education. The specific study design with different types of spoken text along with repeated assessments at 14-day intervals allowed us to estimate the 'natural' variation of speech parameters over time, and to analyze the sensitivity of speech parameters with respect to form and content of spoken text. Additionally, our project included a longitudinal self-assessment study with university students from Zurich (n = 18) and unemployed adults from Valencia (n = 18) in order to test the feasibility of the speech analysis method in home environments. RESULTS: The normative data showed that speaking behavior and voice sound characteristics can be quantified in a reproducible and language-independent way. The high resolution of the method was verified by a computerized assignment of speech parameter patterns to languages at a success rate of 90%, while the correct assignment to texts was 70%. In the longitudinal self-assessment study we calculated individual 'baselines' for each test person along with deviations thereof. The significance of such deviations was assessed through the normative reference data. CONCLUSIONS: Our data provided gender-, age-, and language-specific thresholds that allow one to reliably distinguish between 'natural fluctuations' and 'significant changes'. The longitudinal self-assessment study with repeated assessments at 1-day intervals over 14 days demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of the speech analysis method in home environments, thus clearing the way to a broader range of applications in psychiatry. © 2014 S. Background Most research has focused on mothers¿ experiences of perinatal loss itself or on the subsequent pregnancy, whereas little attention has been paid to both parents¿ experiences of having a child following late perinatal loss and the experience of parenting this child. The current study therefore explored mothers¿ and fathers' experiences of becoming a parent to a child born after a recent stillbirth, covering the period of the second pregnancy and up to two years after the birth of the next baby.MethodIn depth interviews were conducted with 7 couples (14 participants). Couples were eligible if they previously had a stillbirth (after 24 weeks of gestation) and subsequently had another child (their first live baby) who was now under the age of 2 years. Couples who had more than one child after experiencing a stillbirth and those who were not fluent in English were excluded. Qualitative analysis of the interview data was conducted using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.ResultsFive superordinate themes emerged from the data: Living with uncertainty; Coping with uncertainty; Relationship with the next child; The continuing grief process; Identity as a parent. Overall, fathers' experiences were similar to those of mothers', including high levels of anxiety and guilt during the subsequent pregnancy and after the child was born. Coping strategies to address these were identified. Differences between mothers and fathers regarding the grief process during the subsequent pregnancy and after their second child was born were identified. Despite difficulties with bonding during pregnancy and at the time when the baby was born, parents' perceptions of their relationship with their subsequent child were positive.ConclusionsFindings highlight the importance of tailoring support systems not only according to mothers' but also to fathers' needs. Parents¿, and particularly fathers', reported lack of opportunities for grieving as well as the high level of anxiety of both parents about their baby's wellbeing during pregnancy and after birth implies a need for structured support. Difficulties experienced in bonding with the subsequent child during pregnancy and once the child is born need to be normalised.

Aquest treball està enfocat a l'anàlisi sobre la forma de vida i l'organització de dues germandats 'rocieras' ubicades en un mateix municipi, la localitat barcelonesa de Sant Adrià de Besòs. Aquesta tipologia associativa desenvolupa l'activitat dins la fe a la Verge del Rocío, reproduint la identitat cultural andalusa a través de festes i rituals cerimoniosos traslladats a Catalunya. La història del 'Rocío' i la seva progressiva inserció, de la mà dels immigrants andalusos a Catalunya, és l'inici del que serà un apropament a l'associacionisme 'rociero' en la comunitat catalana a través de les dues germandats adrianenques.

El llibre gira entorn de l’origen del drama com a espectacle. Fa una recerca de les arrels del gènere dramàtic tant a Egipte com a Grècia per observar-ne el context d’origen. Es constata que la música, el teatre i la dansa es vinculaven directament amb els primers drames sacres. Les experiències escèniques egípcies són comparades amb les incipients experiències teatrals gregues, que desembocarien en el naixement de la tragèdia. En aquest bressol, les figures d’Osiris i Dionís fonamenten el relat mític de les primeres representacions teatrals, on es produeix una connexió entre les pràctiques rituals, l'ús del mite com a expressió d'una conducta i la codificació dels seus continguts en un llenguatge escènic. També s’aborden les circumstàncies que van portar les experiències teatrals d'aquestes dues civilitzacions per camins diferents i van permetre assentar les bases del teatre occidental.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of palliative patients took part in existential behavioral therapy (EBT), a group intervention comprising mindfulness exercises to reduce psychological distress and improve quality of life. OBJECTIVES: This study examined what the participants perceived as helpful to cope with their loss during the first year of bereavement, particularly with regard to the EBT intervention. DESIGN: Sixteen problem-centered, semi-structured interviews were evaluated with content analysis. RESULTS: Two main categories were found: social support and self-regulation. Social support includes sense of belonging as well as emotional, cognitive, and practical help experienced from others. Mindfulness and acceptance, a clear focus on the positive, and orientation toward the future were helpful strategies of self-regulation; these were also part of the EBT intervention. Mindfulness was understood as permitting emotions and acceptance of one's inner processes, even if they were not pleasant, and was found to be helpful to stop ruminative thinking. CONCLUSIONS: The categories considered as being helpful parallel core elements of EBT and recent grief theories. The intervention was found to be supportive and met the needs of the participants. The interviewees appreciated the continuity of EBT support from palliative care into bereavement.
