A marked ocean acidification event and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations following the extreme environmental conditions of the younger Cryogenian glaciation have been inferred from boron isotope measurements. Calcium and magnesium isotope analyses offer additional insights into the processes occurring during this time. Data from Neoproterozoic sections in Namibia indicate that following the end of glaciation the continental weathering flux transitioned from being of mixed carbonate and silicate character to a silicate-dominated one. Combined with the effects of primary dolomite formation in the cap dolostones, this caused the ocean to depart from a state of acidification and return to higher pH after climatic amelioration. Differences in the magnitude of stratigraphic isotopic changes across the continental margin of the southern Congo craton shelf point to local influences modifying and amplifying the global signal, which need to be considered in order to avoid overestimation of the worldwide chemical weathering flux.

El modelo de ayudas directas en la PAC post-2013: análisis de impactos de escenarios potenciales

Desde su introducción en 1992, las ayudas directas se han perfilado como uno de los principales instrumentos de apoyo al sector agrario de la UE. Este trabajo analiza potenciales escenarios de convergencia de las ayudas directas en la PAC post-2013. Se utiliza para ello el modelo CAPRI, que permite representar el funcionamiento de los mercados agroalimentarios a escala global así como incorporar las medidas de política agraria a nivel regional. Los resultados indican que un pago único más nivelado tendría impactos mínimos a nivel global de la UE pero conllevaría efectos redistributivos considerables, tanto entre regiones como entre Estados Miembros.

La Planta única como tipo resistente a la escala

El sistema capitalista ha generado dos de los modelos espaciales de indiferencia funcional más extremos: por un lado, el espacio tecnificado y repetido del edificio de oficinas en altura, encarnado por la ?planta tipo? y, por otro, el espacio diáfano y extenso del gran contendor, que responde a la lógica de lo que llamaremos ?planta única?. En los edificios construidos para la industria automovilística y bélica americana se encuentra el germen de un tipo que servirá de modelo para los nuevos espacios de consumo de bienes y servicios de la ciudad post-industrial. En ella, la identificación del rascacielos con el centro y del contenedor con la periferia sigue vigente, porque la densidad necesaria del primero y la ocupación extensiva del segundo hacen que resulte imposible invertir los términos. Sin embargo, ambos representan el desarrollo estrictamente pragmático de los principios de la ?planta libre? como sistema operativo genérico, dando lugar a construcciones de gran tamaño que ponen a prueba la resistencia a la escala del propio tipo. Tomando como referencia la neutralidad característica de la ?planta única? el texto analiza el comportamiento frente al cambio de tamaño de sus dos configuraciones complementarias: la gran sala hipóstila y la gran sala diáfana.

La crítica a la "Ville Contemporaine" no solo se escribía, también se dibujaba y a veces, incluso, se construía. La primera generación post-CIAM trabajó intensamente en desmentir con palabras y obras al Oud que ya en los años 20 del pasado siglo, tomando la delantera a Le Corbusier y desde su mejor sentido práctico y estético afirmaba: "Las calles para el negocio, los patios interiores para la vida. Los dos estrictamente separados y con un carácter contradictorio".

Post-transcriptional regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor mRNA by the product of the VHL tumor suppressor gene.

The VHL tumor suppressor gene is inactivated in patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease and in most sporadic clear cell renal carcinomas. Although VHL protein function remains unclear, VHL does interact with the elongin BC subunits in vivo and regulates RNA polymerase II elongation activity in vitro by inhibiting formation of the elongin ABC complex. Expression of wild-type VHL in renal carcinoma cells with inactivated endogenous VHL resulted in unaltered in vitro cell growth and decreased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA expression and responsiveness to serum deprivation. VEGF is highly expressed in many tumors, including VHL-associated and sporadic renal carcinomas, and it stimulates neoangiogenesis in growing solid tumors. Despite 5-fold differences in VEGF mRNA levels, VHL overexpression did not affect VEGF transcription initiation or elongation as would have been suggested by VHL-elongin association. These results suggest that VHL regulates VEGF expression at a post-transcriptional level and that VHL inactivation in target cells causes a loss of VEGF suppression, leading to formation of a vascular stroma.
