Apresenta-se neste trabalho uma análise da qualidade da tensão no Ponto de Acoplamento Comum (PAC) entre uma indústria de alumínio e o sistema interligado nacional, de modo a avaliar o impacto produzido por esta instalação na rede básica no que diz respeito aos fenômenos de flutuação de tensão, desequilíbrio de tensão e distorção harmônica de tensão. Os dados dos distúrbios da qualidade da energia citados anteriormente foram coletados através de uma campanha de medição com duração de 7 dias consecutivos, solicitada pelo Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) em casos de cargas conectadas à rede básica que apresentem características não-lineares, como é o caso das indústrias de alumínio. Adicionalmente, um estudo computacional visando determinar os valores máximos de distorção harmônica de tensão no PAC é apresentado com o intuito de completar as análises via campanha de medição. Os programas computacionais utilizados para a realização do estudo foram o HarmZs do CEPEL e o Matlab 7.0.

Apresenta-se neste trabalho uma análise da qualidade da energia do sistema de distribuição de uma indústria de petróleo, de modo a avaliar o impacto da instalação de conversores de frequência no que diz respeito ao fenômeno de distorção harmônica. Os dados de distorção harmônica de tensão foram coletados através de duas medições com duração de sete dias consecutivos, sendo uma realizada antes e outra depois da instalação dos conversores de frequência. Adicionalmente, um estudo computacional utilizando o PTW (Power Tools for Windows) é apresentado com o intuito de simular condições futuras de instalação de novos conversores de frequência e de avaliar a influência dos bancos de capacitores na amplificação da distorção harmônica no sistema de distribuição.

The reduction of friction and wear in systems presenting metal-to-metal contacts, as in several mechanical components, represents a traditional challenge in tribology. In this context, this work presents a computational study based on the linear Archard's wear law and finite element modeling (FEM), in order to analyze unlubricated sliding wear observed in typical pin on disc tests. Such modeling was developed using finite element software Abaqus® with 3-D deformable geometries and elastic–plastic material behavior for the contact surfaces. Archard's wear model was implemented into a FORTRAN user subroutine (UMESHMOTION) in order to describe sliding wear. Modeling of debris and oxide formation mechanisms was taken into account by the use of a global wear coefficient obtained from experimental measurements. Such implementation considers an incremental computation for surface wear based on the nodal displacements by means of adaptive mesh tools that rearrange local nodal positions. In this way, the worn track was obtained and new surface profile is integrated for mass loss assessments. This work also presents experimental pin on disc tests with AISI 4140 pins on rotating AISI H13 discs with normal loads of 10, 35, 70 and 140 N, which represent, respectively, mild, transition and severe wear regimes, at sliding speed of 0.1 m/s. Numerical and experimental results were compared in terms of wear rate and friction coefficient. Furthermore, in the numerical simulation the stress field distribution and changes in the surface profile across the worn track of the disc were analyzed. The applied numerical formulation has shown to be more appropriate to predict mild wear regime than severe regime, especially due to the shorter running-in period observed in lower loads that characterizes this kind of regime.

Das Basisproblem von Arc-Routing Problemen mit mehreren Fahrzeugen ist das Capacitated Arc-Routing Problem (CARP). Praktische Anwendungen des CARP sind z.B. in den Bereichen Müllabfuhr und Briefzustellung zu finden. Das Ziel ist es, einen kostenminimalen Tourenplan zu berechnen, bei dem alle erforderlichen Kanten bedient werden und gleichzeitig die Fahrzeugkapazität eingehalten wird. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Cut-First Branch-and-Price Second Verfahren entwickelt. In der ersten Phase werden Schnittebenen generiert, die dem Master Problem in der zweiten Phase hinzugefügt werden. Das Subproblem ist ein kürzeste Wege Problem mit Ressourcen und wird gelöst um neue Spalten für das Master Problem zu liefern. Ganzzahlige CARP Lösungen werden durch ein neues hierarchisches Branching-Schema garantiert. Umfassende Rechenstudien zeigen die Effektivität dieses Algorithmus. Kombinierte Standort- und Arc-Routing Probleme ermöglichen eine realistischere Modellierung von Zustellvarianten bei der Briefzustellung. In dieser Arbeit werden jeweils zwei mathematische Modelle für Park and Loop und Park and Loop with Curbline vorgestellt. Die Modelle für das jeweilige Problem unterscheiden sich darin, wie zulässige Transfer Routen modelliert werden. Während der erste Modelltyp Subtour-Eliminationsbedingungen verwendet, werden bei dem zweiten Modelltyp Flussvariablen und Flusserhaltungsbedingungen eingesetzt. Die Rechenstudie zeigt, dass ein MIP-Solver den zweiten Modelltyp oft in kürzerer Rechenzeit lösen kann oder bei Erreichen des Zeitlimits bessere Zielfunktionswerte liefert.

A computational study of line-focus generation was done using a self-written ray-tracing code and compared to experimental data. Two line-focusing geometries were compared, i.e., either exploiting the sagittal astigmatism of a tilted spherical mirror or using the spherical aberration of an off-axis- illuminated spherical mirror. Line focusing by means of astigmatism or spherical aberration showed identical results as expected for the equivalence of the two frames of reference. The variation of the incidence angle on the target affects the line-focus length, which affects the amplification length such that as long as the irradiance is above the amplification threshold, it is advantageous to have a longer line focus. The amplification threshold is physically dependent on operating parameters and plasma-column conditions and in the present study addresses four possible cases.

The abundance of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a natural protein produced by the fetal yolk sac during pregnancy, correlates with lower incidence of estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer. The pharmacophore region of AFP has been narrowed down to a four amino acid (AA) region in the third domain of the 591 AA peptide. Our computational study focuses on a 4-mer segment consisting of the amino acids threonine-proline-valine-asparagine (TPVN). We have run replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations and used 120 configurational snapshots from the total trajectory as starting configurations for quantum chemical calculations. We optimized structures using semiempirical (PM3, PM6, PM6-D2, PM6-H2, PM6-DH+, PM6-DH2) and density functional methods (TPSS, PBE0, M06-2X). By comparing the accuracy of these methods against RI-MP2 benchmarks, we devised a protocol for calculating the lowest energy conformers of these peptides accurately and efficiently. This protocol screens out high-energy conformers using lower levels of theory and outlines a general method for predicting small peptide structures.

Bidirectional promoters regulate adjacent genes organized in a divergent fashion (head to head orientation). Several Reports pertaining to bidirectional promoters on a genomic scale exists in mammals. This work provides the essential background on theoretical and experimental work to carry out a genomic scale analysis of bidirectional promoters in plants. A computational study was performed to identify putative bidirectional promoters and the over-represented cis-regulatory motifs from three sequenced plant genomes: rice (Oryza sativa), Arabidopsis thaliana, and Populus trichocarpa using the Plant Cis-acting Regulatory DNA Elements (PLACE) and PLANT CARE databases. Over-represented motifs along with their possible function were described with the help of a few conserved representative putative bidirectional promoters from the three model plants. By doing so a foundation was laid for the experimental evaluation of bidirectional promoters in plants. A novel Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transient expression assay (AmTEA) was developed for young plants of different cereal species and the model dicot Arabidopsis thaliana. AmTEA was evaluated using five promoters (six constructs) and two reporter genes, gus and egfp. Efficacy and stability of AmTEA was compared with stable transgenics using the Arabidopsis DEAD-box RNA helicase family gene promoter. AmTEA was primarily developed to overcome the many problems associated with the development of transgenics and expression studies in plants. Finally a possible mechanism for the bidirectional activity of bidirectional promoters was highlighted. Deletion analysis using promoter-reporter gene constructs identified three rice promoters to be bidirectional. Regulatory elements located in the 5’- untranslated regions (UTR) of one of the genes of the divergent gene pair were found to be responsible for their bidirectional ctivity
