Bakgrund: För att uppnå en god barnanpassad vård inom ortopedteknik krävs information om hur barn uppfattar mötet på en ortopedteknisk avdelning. Genom att ta del av barns tankar, åsikter och förslag kan verksamheter i framtiden lättare argumentera för exempelvis hur lokaler bör inredas och hur man bör bemöta barn.   Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur barn upplever mötet på en ortopedteknisk avdelning i avseendet vårdmiljö och möte med ortopedingenjören.   Metod: En kvalitativ metod där deltagarna får rita och berätta kallad “Draw and tell” och åtta intervjuer med barn mellan 6 till 12 år om deras upplevelse efter besöket hos en ortopedingenjör genomfördes. Intervjuerna transkripterades och en innehållsanalys genomfördes.   Resultat: Vissa gemensamma faktorer hittades i intervjuerna så som att det ansågs att det samtalades för mycket utan att engagera barnet samt att aktiviteter som fanns sågs som bra då det kunde bli lite väntan under besöket. Det fanns flera förslag på andra aktiviteter som önskades under väntan och speglade barnens egna intressen så som datorspel och böcker.   Slutsats: Denna studie visar att det som ortopedingenjören är viktigt att engagera barnen vid mötena samt att aktiviteter finns till hands under långa väntetider.   Nyckelord: Barns upplevelser, ortopedteknik, ortopedingenjör, bemötande, miljö

Varje år drabbas 250-300 barn under 15 år av cancer i Sverige. Tidigare ansågs barncancer nästintill obotligt, men dagens framsteg inom medicin har gjort att allt fler barn överlever sin cancer och perspektivet inom hälso- och sjukvård har därmed ändrats radikalt. När barn drabbas av cancer påverkas hela familjen. I denna kaotiska situation är ett bra bemötande av största vikt. För att kunna ge ett bra bemötande och god omvårdnad till barnet och familjen krävs att barnsjuksköterskan har kompetens och kommunikativ förmåga. Även ett bra samarbete mellan barnsjuksköterskan och familjen är av stor vikt. Syftet med studien var att beskriva barns, två till fem år, och deras föräldrars upplevelser av barnsjuksköterskans bemötande inom barnonkologisk omvårdnad, 12 månader efter diagnostillfället. Studien är en kvalitativ studie med deduktiv ansats, där intervjuerna analyserats med innehållsanalys utifrån Swansons omvårdnadsteori. 12 barn i åldern två till fem år ingick i studien, och föräldrarna medverkade som komplement till barnens deltagande. Resultatet visar att barnsjuksköterskans bemötande har stor betydelse för barns och föräldrars upplevelser och välbefinnande i omvårdnaden. Viktigast för ett bra bemötande var delaktighet, tillgänglighet och kontinuitet, information samt att ha ett barnperspektiv. För att skapa bästa förutsättningarna för ett bra bemötande krävs att barnsjuksköterskan gör barnet och familjen delaktiga i vården, ser barnet som en individ och har kompetens och kunskap. Mer forskning behövs kring hur barn och familjer upplever barnsjuksköterskans bemötande och hur det påverkar deras upplevelser av vården, inte bara inom barnonkologisk omvårdnad utan även generellt inom pediatrisk omvårdnad.

Detta examensarbete är en del av utbildningen Kandidatpåbyggnad med inriktning Informatik som är ett påbyggnadsår för Grafisk design och webbutveckling på Jönköping University: School of Engineering. Vid en snabb granskning av hemsidor idag går det enkelt att se att det är dominerande att använda sans serif-typsnitt både till rubriker och i brödtext. I grafiska utbildningar lärs det ut att för bäst läsbarhet bör serifer användas i brödtext. Syftet med examensarbetet var att undersöka vad som påverkar läsbarheten på en digital skärm och varför det inte är vanligare att använda serifer på en webben, med tanke på hur långt tekniken kommit idag med nya högupplösta skärmar som inte borde påverka användningen av serifer. Syftet var även att undersöka om val av typografi idag alltid baseras på typografiska regler. Resultatet visade att ett serif-typsnitt upplevs som mer lättläst än ett sans serif-typsnitt oberoende på om de läses på en digital skärm eller på ett tryckt papper. Resultatet visade även att dominationen av sans serif-typsnitt på webben beror på en vana som hänger kvar sen förr, men att detta troligen kommer att förändras i framtiden. Det finns geografiska begränsningar i arbetet, då examensarbetet endast undersöker södra Sverige. För att öka validiteten kunde representanter från hela Sverige ha deltagit. Det hade kunnat påverka och förändra resultatet. Undersökningen hade kunnat förbättras generellt genom att utveckla den och använda fler typsnitt, för att få ett tydligare svar på frågeställningen den undersökte. Även detta hade kunnat påverka resultatet till något annat.

Syftet med denna studie är att ta reda på vad som framträder som SO i lärares tal om undervisning som handlar om hållbar utveckling. För att ta reda på detta har kvalitativa intervjuer gjorts med ett antal lärare. Lärarna som deltagit i studien arbetar alla inom F-3 klass samt att de bedriver undervisning i SO. Min första forskningsfråga handlar om vad lärarna förknippar med begreppet hållbar utveckling. Flera av lärarna i denna studie associerar direkt till att vi ska ha en värld som håller länge, medan några av lärarna spontant tänkte på sopsortering och återvinning av olika slag. Det som framträder som SO i undervisning kring hållbar utveckling är bland annat, att lärarna arbetar mycket med miljöfrågor utifrån elevernas vardag. Något som alla respondenter i denna studie har gemensamt är att de arbetar mot den ekologiska delen av hållbar utveckling, alltså värna om jordens natur och miljö. Sista forskningsfrågan i denna studie handlar om svårigheter/utmaningar som framträtt via intervjuerna, kopplat till SO-undervisning. En svårighet/utmaning som framträtt är, att få nyanlända elever att förstå både det praktiska och de teoretiska delarna när det handlar om hållbar utveckling.

This dissertation, based on material from Stenman s vast private archive, examines the role played by Swedish-speaking Finnish art dealer Gösta Stenman (1888-1947) and his art gallery, Stenmans Konstsalong, in the Finnish and Swedish art worlds from 1911 to 1947. This archive is examined here for the first time. The analytical framework used for this empirical study derives from Pierre Bourdieu s sociological theories. An art-sociological approach allows for the inclusion of more mechanisms at work in the art world than are typically embraced in such inquiries. This approach provides a fuller understanding of how Stenman attained his standing and central role in the art world in Finland as well as Sweden; enabling us to appreciate how he came to occupy such a prominent position in current art historical writing. All of these issues constitute new areas of research. Taking his cues from the contemporary art world of Paris, Stenman became the year 1914 a modern art dealer like no other in the Nordic countries. This dissertation represents the first academic investigation into his operations, strategies, and objectives, offering insight into not only the art dealer himself but also the functioning of the art market one of the most vital aspects of the art world. A by-product of this work, is that the modern art market in Finland is portrayed, including essential issues related to its growth and development as well as how it altered the conditions under which art could be produced, exhibited and promoted and what this entailed for the art world at large, artists and patrons alike. This first systematic analysis of the operations of Stenman s Konstsalong offers greater understanding of the art worlds of Sweden and Finland in the early twentieth century. The work also looks at how an agent of the art market could move between the fields of art in Sweden and Finland. The manner in which Stenman promoted individual artists, including his relationships with Tyko Sallinen, Helene Schjerfbeck, Juho Mäkelä, Jalmari Ruokokoski, Siri Derkert, Esther Kjerner, Eva Bagge, and many others, also falls within this purview. Stenman s contract with Sallinen from 1913 stands out as a new phenomenon in Finnish art promotion, whereby an artistic career became established via a far-sighted, strategic promotional program. The case study of Stenman s promotion of Schjerfbeck in Sweden provides evidence of the increasingly advanced nature of Stenman s strategies. The title of the dissertation, The Promoter of Modernism, attempts to convey that Stenman was the consummate modernist, modern in his thoughts, his actions, and his approach to art. The Struggle for Eros: On Love and Gender in the Pahlen Series The present dissertation examines how gender, sexuality and motherhood are constructed in the novel series Fröknarna von Pahlen (The Misses von Pahlen, I VII, 1930 1935) by the Swedish author Agnes von Krusenstjerna. The aim of the study is to analyze how the Pahlen series relates to the discourses on gender and sexuality circulating in the 1930s, and how the series opens a dialogue with the feminist thinking of the time especially with the book Lifslinjer I (Love and Marriage, 1903) by the Swedish author Ellen Key. Fröknarna von Pahlen holds a central position in the research on Agnes von Krusenstjerna partly due to the literary debate that the novel series triggered. The debate was connected to the development taking place in the Swedish society in the beginning of the 1930s, in the so-called second phase of the Modern Breakthrough. Sweden was at that time characterized by struggle over the definitions of gender, sexuality and parenthood, and this struggle is also visible in the Pahlen series. The literary debate took place in 1934 1935 and it began after an article by the modernist writer Karin Boye was published in Social-Demokraten on 28 January 1934. In her polemic article, Boye saw the Pahlen series as a sign that the family institution is on the verge of a breakdown and with it the whole moral system that has come to existence through it . Boye went on to state that Krusenstjerna only sees and describes and that she explores neither new literary forms nor new values. Boye wrote the article before the last two parts of the novel series were published, so obviously she could not discuss the utopian vision characterizing those parts. This study, however, strives to demonstrate that Krusenstjerna not only sees and describes, but that she like many of her contemporary female colleagues appears to take the request of Friedrich Nietzsche to revaluate all values seriously. Like the works of her contemporaries, Krusenstjerna s Pahlen series is marked by a double vision on the one hand a critique of the prevailing social order, and on the other hand a dream of a new world and a new human being. In this research the vision of the Pahlen series is characterized as queer in order to emphasize that the series not only criticizes the prevailing gender order and its morals, but is also open for new ways of doing gender, parenthood, and family.

Epilysin (MMP-28) is the most recently identified member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of extracellular proteases. Together these enzymes are capable of degrading almost all components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and are thus involved in important biological processes such as development, wound healing and immune functions, but also in pathological processes such as tumor invasion, metastasis and arthritis. MMPs do not act solely by degrading the ECM. They also regulate cell behavior by releasing growth factors and biologically active peptides from the ECM, by modulating cell surface receptors and adhesion molecules and by regulating the activity of many important mediators in inflammatory pathways. The aim of this study was to define the unique role of epilysin within the MMP-family, to elucidate how and when it is expressed and how its catalytic activity is regulated. To gain information on its essential functions and substrates, the specific aim was to characterize how epilysin affects the phenotype of epithelial cells, where it is biologically expressed. During the course of the study we found that the epilysin promoter contains a well conserved GT-box that is essential for the basic expression of this gene. Transcription factors Sp1 and Sp3 bind this sequence and could hence regulate both the basic and cell type and differentiation stage specific expression of epilysin. We cloned mouse epilysin cDNA and found that epilysin is well conserved between human and mouse genomes and that epilysin is glycosylated and activated by furin. Similarly to in human tissues, epilysin is normally expressed in a number of mouse tissues. The expression pattern differs from most other MMPs, which are expressed only in response to injury or inflammation and in pathological processes like cancer. These findings implicate that epilysin could be involved in tissue homeostasis, perhaps fine-tuning the phenotype of epithelial cells according to signals from the ECM. In view of these results, it was unexpected to find that epilysin can induce a stable epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) when overexpressed in epithelial lung carcinoma cells. Transforming growth factor b (TGF-b) was recognized as a crucial mediator of this process, which was characterized by the loss of E-cadherin mediated cell-cell adhesion, elevated expression of gelatinase B and MT1-MMP and increased cell migration and invasion into collagen I gels. We also observed that epilysin is bound to the surface of epithelial cells and that this interaction is lost upon cell transformation and is susceptible to degradation by membrane type-1-MMP (MT1-MMP). The wide expression of epilysin under physiological conditions implicates that its effects on epithelial cell phenotype in vivo are not as dramatic as seen in our in vitro cell system. Nevertheless, current results indicate a possible interaction between epilysin and TGF-b also under physiological circumstances, where epilysin activity may not induce EMT but, instead, trigger less permanent changes in TGF-b signaling and cell motility. Epilysin may thus play an important role in TGF-b regulated events such as wound healing and inflammation, processes where involvement of epilysin has been indicated.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate intensity, productivity and efficiency in agriculture in Finland and show implications for N and P fertiliser management. Environmental concerns relating to agricultural production have been and still are focused on arguments about policies that affect agriculture. These policies constrain production while demand for agricultural products such as food, fibre and energy continuously increase. Therefore the importance of increasing productivity is a great challenge to agriculture. Over the last decades producers have experienced several large changes in the production environment such as the policy reform when Finland joined the EU 1995. Other and market changes occurred with the further EU enlargement with neighbouring countries in 2005 and with the decoupling of supports over the 2006-2007 period. Decreasing prices a decreased number of farmers and decreased profitability in agricultural production have resulted from these changes and constraints and of technological development. It is known that the accession to the EU 1995 would herald changes in agriculture. Especially of interest was how the sudden changes in prices of commodities on especially those of cereals, decreased by 60%, would influence agricultural production. The knowledge of properties of the production function increased in importance as a consequence of price changes. A research on the economic instruments to regulate productions was carried out and combined with earlier studies in paper V. In paper I the objective was to compare two different technologies, the conventional farming and the organic farming, determine differences in productivity and technical efficiency. In addition input specific or environmental efficiencies were analysed. The heterogeneity of agricultural soils and its implications were analysed in article II. In study III the determinants of technical inefficiency were analysed. The aspects and possible effects of the instability in policies due to a partial decoupling of production factors and products were studied in paper IV. Consequently connection between technical efficiency based on the turnover and the sales return was analysed in this study. Simple economic instruments such as fertiliser taxes have a direct effect on fertiliser consumption and indirectly increase the value of organic fertilisers. However, fertiliser taxes, do not fully address the N and P management problems adequately and are therefore not suitable for nutrient management improvements in general. Productivity of organic farms is lower on average than conventional farms and the difference increases when looking at selling returns only. The organic sector needs more research and development on productivity. Livestock density in organic farming increases productivity, however, there is an upper limit to livestock densities on organic farms and therefore nutrient on organic farms are also limited. Soil factors affects phosphorous and nitrogen efficiency. Soils like sand and silt have lower input specific overall efficiency for nutrients N and P. Special attention is needed for the management on these soils. Clay soils and soils with moderate clay content have higher efficiency. Soil heterogeneity is cause for an unavoidable inefficiency in agriculture.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has gained increased interest in the computer software industry, but assessing its quality remains a challenge. FOSS development is frequently carried out by globally distributed development teams, and all stages of development are publicly visible. Several product and process-level quality factors can be measured using the public data. This thesis presents a theoretical background for software quality and metrics and their application in a FOSS environment. Information available from FOSS projects in three information spaces are presented, and a quality model suitable for use in a FOSS context is constructed. The model includes both process and product quality metrics, and takes into account the tools and working methods commonly used in FOSS projects. A subset of the constructed quality model is applied to three FOSS projects, highlighting both theoretical and practical concerns in implementing automatic metric collection and analysis. The experiment shows that useful quality information can be extracted from the vast amount of data available. In particular, projects vary in their growth rate, complexity, modularity and team structure.

The blood vascular system is a closed circulatory system, responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. In contrast, the lymphatic vascular system is a blind-ended transport system that collects the extravasated tissue fluid from the capillary beds, and transports it back to the blood circulation. Failure in collecting or transporting the lymph, due to defects in the lymphatic vasculature, leads to accumulation of extra fluid in the tissues, and consequently to tissue swelling lymphedema. The two vascular systems function in concert. They are structurally related, but their development is regulated by separate, however overlapping, molecular mechanisms. During embryonic development, blood vessels are formed by vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, processes largely mediated by members of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family and their tyrosine kinase receptors. The lymphatic vessels are formed after the cardiovascular system is already functional. This process, called lymphangiogenesis, is controlled by distinct members of the VEGF family, together with the transcription factors Prox1 and Sox18. After the primary formation of the vessels, the vasculature needs to mature and remodel into a functional network of hierarchically organized vessels: the blood vasculature into arteries, capillaries and veins; and the lymphatic vasculature into lymphatic capillaries, responsible for the uptake of the extravasated fluid from the tissues, and collecting vessels, responsible for the transport of the lymph back to the blood circulation. A major event in the maturation of the lymphatic vasculature is the formation of collecting lymphatic vessels. These vessels are characterized by the presence of intraluminal valves, preventing backflow of the lymph, and a sparse coverage of smooth muscle cells, which help in pumping the lymph forward. In our study, we have characterized the molecular and morphological events leading to formation of collecting lymphatic vessels. We found that this process is regulated cooperatively by the transcription factors Foxc2 and NFATc1. Mice lacking either Foxc2 or active NFATc1 fail to remodel the primary lymphatic plexus into functional lymphatic capillaries and collecting vessels. The resulting vessels lack valves, display abnormal expression of lymphatic molecules, and are hyperplastic. Moreover, the lymphatic capillaries show aberrant sprouting, and are abnormally covered with smooth muscle cells. In humans, mutations in FOXC2 lead to Lymphedema-Distichiasis (LD), a disabling disease characterized by swelling of the limbs due to insufficient lymphatic function. Our results from Foxc2 mutant mice and LD patients indicate that the underlying cause for lymphatic failure in LD is agenesis of collecting lymphatic valves and aberrant recruitment of periendothelial cells and basal lamina components to lymphatic capillaries. Furthermore, we show that liprin β1, a poorly characterized member of the liprin family of cytoplasmic proteins, is highly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells in vivo, and is required for lymphatic vessel integrity. These data highlight the important role of FOXC2, NFATc1 and liprin β1 in the regulation of lymphatic development, specifically in the maturation and formation of the collecting lymphatic vessels. As damage to collecting vessels is a major cause of lymphatic dysfunction in humans, our results also suggest that FOXC2 and NFATc1 are potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses encode only a single protein species that contains RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) motifs. This protein is a central component in the life cycle of a dsRNA virus, carrying out both RNA transcription and replication. The architecture of viral RdRPs resembles that of a 'cupped right hand' with fingers, palm and thumb domains. Those applying de novo initiation have additional structural features, including a flexible C-terminal domain that constitutes the priming platform. Moreover, viral RdRPs must be able to interact with the incoming 3'-terminus of the template and position it so that a productive binary complex is formed. Bacteriophage phi6 of the Cystoviridae family is to date one of the best studied dsRNA viruses. The purified recombinant phi6 RdRP is highly active in vitro and possesses both RNA replication and transcription activities. The extensive biochemical observations and the atomic level crystal structure of the phi6 RdRP provides an excellent platform for in-depth studies of RNA replication in vitro. In this thesis, targeted structure-based mutagenesis, enzymatic assays and molecular mapping of phi6 RdRP and its RNA were used to elucidate the formation of productive RNA-polymerase binary complexes. The positively charged rim of the template tunnel was shown to have a significant role in the engagement of highly structured ssRNA molecules, whereas specific interactions further down in the template tunnel promote ssRNA entry to the catalytic site. This work demonstrated that by aiding the formation of a stable binary complex with optimized RNA templates, the overall polymerization activity of the phi6 RdRP can be greatly enhanced. Furthermore, proteolyzed phi6 RdRPs that possess a nick in the polypeptide chain at the hinge region, which is part of the extended loop, were better suited for catalysis at higher temperatures whilst favouring back-primed initiation. The clipped C-terminus remains associated with the main body of the polymerase and the hinge region, although structurally disordered, is involved in the control of C-terminal domain displacement. The accumulated knowhow on bacteriophage phi6 was utilized in the development of two technologies for the production of dsRNA: (i) an in vitro system that combines the T7 RNA polymerase and the phi6 RdRP to generate dsRNA molecules of practically unlimited length, and (ii) an in vivo RNA replication system based on restricted infection with phi6 polymerase complexes in bacterial cells to produce virtually unlimited amounts of dsRNA. The pools of small interfering RNAs derived from dsRNA produced by these systems were validated and shown to efficiently decrease the expression of both exogenous and endogenous targets.
