The reader as audience : the appeal of the writers' festival to the contemporary audience

The contemporary popularity of the writers' festival might appear something of a contradiction, given that such festivals are based around an art form that has been chiefly a solitary experience for the reader for several centuries. Taking the 2009 Eye of the Storm Writers' Festival in Alice Springs as its case study, this article examines the motivations of the audience for participating in community-based writers' festivals. Interviews with audience members suggest that the writers' festival serves a much larger cultural and social role for the audience participant than simply increasing their enjoyment of literature.

Mobile phone-based audience response system and student engagement in large-group teaching

Engaging students in large classes is a challenge at the best of times. Teachers are increasingly seeking the help of new technology to keep the attention of their technologically savvy students. VotApedia, a free cell phone-based audience response system, is one such technology. This research aims to assess economics students' perceptions of use of VotApedia in helping to achieve deeper learning; to map importance of use of audience response technology for students in promoting engagement and to assess the promotion of a positive and active environment in lectures by use of VotApedia in an Australian University. Using the framework of activity theory, it argues that technologies such as VotApedia use positive feedback loops to facilitate improved student engagement and learning.

Traditional media and the new media audience

There are many challenges ahead for producers, consumers and regulators of Australian media. Perhaps the biggest challenge is to understand that, along with new media, we now have a new media audience - an increasingly different social formation, often eluding efforts to contain its actions within profitable corporate pathways.

Visualising a state-wide patient data collection : a case study to expand the audience for healthcare data

This paper describes the application of existing and novel adaptations of visualisation techniques to routinely collected health data. The aim of this case study is to examine the capacity for visualisation approaches to quickly and e ectively inform clinical, policy, and scal decision making to improve healthcare provision. We demonstrate the use of interactive graphics, fluctuation plots, mosaic plots, time plots, heatmaps, and disease maps to visualise patient admission, transfer, in-hospital mortality, morbidity coding, execution of diagnosis and treatment guidelines, and the temporal and spatial variations of diseases. The relative e ectiveness of these techniques and associated challenges are discussed.
