The alumina nanotubes were prepared by using the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS), as structure-directing template for the first time with Al(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O as precursor via a hydrothermal method. Structure and morphology of the nanotubes were characterized by XRD, TEM, FT-IR, TG and N-2 adsorption-desorption. The obtained nanotubes were found having outer diameters from 6 to 8 nm with length up to 200 nm. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The binding of the electroactive hexaammineruthenium (III) complex ions to anionic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been investigated by means of chronocoulometry and ac voltammetry. From chronocoulometric data recorded in 10-2 M LiClO4 containing different [Ru(NH3)6]3+ concentrations, we have established the adsorption isotherm of [Ru(NH3)6]3+ on a compact monolayer of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-5-sulfonate (MBIS) self-assembled on Au(1 1 1). The data were satisfactorily fitted to the linearized Langmuir adsorption isotherm and a binding constant of 4.0 (±0.4) × 106 M-1 has been determined. The electrostatic binding of [Ru(NH3)6]3+ to a dilute PNA-DNA monolayer formed after hybridization on a PNA-modified gold electrode by self-assembly from a mixed solution of mercaptobutan-1-ol and PNA oligonucleotides has been studied by ac voltammetry. The admittance of the PNA-modified electrode after hybridization with complementary DNA was measured in 0.01 M Tris-HCl buffer containing different [Ru(NH3)6]3+ concentrations. Based on these data, a binding constant of [Ru(NH3)6]3+ to the surface-confined PNA-DNA duplex was derived from the Langmuir isotherm and amounts to 2.9 (±0.3) × 105 M-1. As the interactions between [Ru(NH3)6]3+ and the immobilized PNA-DNA hybrids on the gold surface are essentially electrostatic, the adsorption of the highly charged cationic redox complex at low concentrations to the negatively charged PNA-DNA modified surface is in large competition with other monovalent cations present in the electrolyte at higher concentrations. The influence of competing sodium cations was thus studied by adding different NaCl concentrations in the 0.01 M Tris-HCl electrolyte. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are benign smooth muscle tumors that often contain an excessive extracellular matrix (ECM). In the present study, we investigated the interactions between human uterine leiomyoma (UtLM) cells and uterine leiomyoma-derived fibroblasts (FB), and their importance in cell growth and ECM protein production using a coculture system. RESULTS: We found enhanced cell proliferation, and elevated levels of ECM collagen type I and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 after coculturing. There was also increased secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor-2, and platelet derived growth factor A and B in the media of UtLM cells cocultured with FB. Protein arrays revealed increased phosphorylated receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) of the above growth factor ligands, and immunoblots showed elevated levels of the RTK downstream effector, phospho-mitogen activated protein kinase 44/42 in cocultured UtLM cells. There was also increased secretion of transforming growth factor-beta 1 and 3, and immunoprecipitated transforming growth factor-beta receptor I from cocultured UtLM cells showed elevated phosphoserine expression. The downstream effectors phospho-small mothers against decapentaplegic -2 and -3 protein (SMAD) levels were also increased in cocultured UtLM cells. However, none of the above effects were seen in normal myometrial cells cocultured with FB. The soluble factors released by tumor-derived fibroblasts and/or UtLM cells, and activation of the growth factor receptors and their pathways stimulated the proliferation of UtLM cells and enhanced the production of ECM proteins. CONCLUSIONS: These data support the importance of interactions between fibroid tumor cells and ECM fibroblasts in vivo, and the role of growth factors, and ECM proteins in the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids.

Articular cartilage consists of chondrocytes and two major components, a collagen-rich framework and highly abundant proteoglycans. Most prior studies defining the zonal distribution of cartilage have extracted proteins with guanidine-HCl. However, an unextracted collagen-rich residual is left after extraction. In addition, the high abundance of anionic polysaccharide molecules extracted from cartilage adversely affects the chromatographic separation. In this study, we established a method for removing chondrocytes from cartilage sections with minimal extracellular matrix protein loss. The addition of surfactant to guanidine-HCl extraction buffer improved protein solubility. Ultrafiltration removed interference from polysaccharides and salts. Almost four-times more collagen peptides were extracted by the in situ trypsin digestion method. However, as expected, proteoglycans were more abundant within the guanidine-HCl extraction. These different methods were used to extract cartilage sections from different cartilage layers (superficial, intermediate, and deep), joint types (knee and hip), and disease states (healthy and osteoarthritic), and the extractions were evaluated by quantitative and qualitative proteomic analyses. The results of this study led to the identifications of the potential biomarkers of osteoarthritis (OA), OA progression, and the joint specific biomarkers.

Water retention and transport in soils is dependent upon the surface tension of the aqueous phase. Surfactants present in aqueous solution reduce the surface tension of aqueous phase. In soil–water systems, this can result in water drainage and reductions in field capacity and hydraulic conductivity. In this investigation, the surface tension of surfactant solutions mixed with soil—in a constant fixed ratio—was measured as a function of surfactant concentration. Two anionic surfactants were used: sodium dodecyl sulphate and sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate. Two soils were also used—a clay soil and a sandy soil. The key observation made by this investigation was that the addition of soil to the surfactant solution provided a further component of surface tension reduction. Neither soil sample reduced the surface tension of water when surfactant was absent from the aqueous phase, though both soils released soil organic matter at low surfactant concentrations as shown by measurement of the chemical oxygen demand of the supernatant solutions. Furthermore, both surfactants were shown to be weakly adsorbed by soil as shown by the use of a methylene blue assay. It is therefore proposed that the additional reduction in surface tension arises from synergistic interactions between the surfactants and dissolved soil organic matter.

Background A recombinant form of the alpha 2(IV)NC1 domain of type IV collagen has been shown to have potent anti-angiogenic activity although this peptide has not been studied in the context of proliferative retinopathies. In the current investigation we examined the potential for alpha 2(IV) NC1 to regulate retinal microvascular endothelial cell function using a range of in vitro and in vivo assay systems.

The effect of dye molecular charges on their adsorption from solution was investigated by using different types of activated carbon adsorbents. Two types of model systems were used representing cationic and anionic dyes. Screening investigations using single point tests were used throughout the study. Cationic dyes, of which Methylene Blue is an example, showed a higher adsorption tendency towards activated carbon over anionic dyes represented by an ate-type reactive compound. Of the number of activated carbons tested, only one of the adsorbents showed an exception to this behavior, and a good relation was observed between Methylene Blue capacity and activated carbon performance. The high capacity of cationic dyes in comparison to anionic dyes was also evident in the results obtained by a preliminary kinetic study carried out on the selected systems. Surface net charge of activated carbon and the nature of attractions between the molecules were suggested to be one of the reasons attributed for this behavior.

Extraction of dibenzothiophene from dodecane using ionic liquids as the extracting phase has been investigated for a range of ionic liquids with varying cation classes (imidazolium, pyridinium, and pyrrolidinium) and a range of anion types using liquid-liquid partition studies and QSPR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) analysis. The partition ratio of dibenzothiophene to the ionic liquids showed a clear variation with cation class (dimethylpyridinium > methylpyridinium > pyridinium approximate to imidazolium approximate to pyrrolidinium), with much less significant variation with anion type. Polyaromatic quinolinium-based ionic liquids showed even greater extraction potential, but were compromised by higher melting points. For example, 1-butyl-6-methylquinolinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} amide (mp 47 degrees C) extracted 90% of the available dibenzothiophene from dodecane at 60 degrees C.
