The extraction of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) from a chloride medium by mixtures of primary amine N1923 and organophosphorus acids [di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid, 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH/EHP), isopropyl phosphonic acid 1-hexyl-4-ethyloctyl ester, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid, and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid] has been studied in the present paper. Results show that only the mixtures of N1923 + HEH/EHP and N1923 + Cyanex272 have synergistic effects on zinc(II), but the other mixtures have no evident synergistic effects. All six mixtures have no evident synergistic effects on cadmium(H). A possible explanation of the different extraction abilities is given based on the structure of the extractants. Furthermore, the possibilities of separating zinc(II) and cadmium(II) with these mixtures are investigated according to the extractabilities. It is possible to separate Zn2+ from bulk cadmium with N1923 and HEH/EHP mixtures and separate Cd2+ from bulk zinc with N1923 and Cyanex301 mixtures.

A series of alpha-diimine nickel(II) complexes containing chloro-substituted ligands, [(Ar)N=C(C10H6)C=N(Ar)]NiBr2 (4a, Ar = 2,3-C6H3Cl2; 4b, Ar = 2,4-C6H3Cl2; 4c, Ar = 2,5-C6H3Cl2; 4d, Ar = 2,6-C6H3Cl2; 4e, Ar = 2,4,6-C6H2Cl3) and [(Ar)N=C(C10H6)C=N(Ar)](2)NiBr2 (5a, Ar = 2,3-C6H3Cl2; 5b, Ar = 2,4-C6H3Cl2; 5c, Ar = 2,5-C6H3Cl2), have been synthesized and investigated as precatalysts for ethylene polymerization. In the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes are highly effective catalysts for the oligomerization or polymerization of ethylene under mild conditions. The catalyst activity and the properties of the products were strongly affected by the aryl-substituents of the ligands used. Depending on the catalyst structure, it is possible to obtain the products ranging from linear alpha-olefins to high-molecular weight polyethylenes.

In the title compound, [Zn(C8H4O4)(C17H10N4O)](n), the Zn-II atom is five-coordinated by two N atoms from the phenanthro-line-derived ligand and three O atoms from one bidentate and one monodentate benzene-1,2-dicarboxylate (1,2-BDC) dianions in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. The Zn-II atoms are bridged by the 1,2-BDC ligands to form a single-chain structure. Neighboring chains interact through pi-pi interactions, leading to a two-dimensional network.

New neutral nickel(II) complexes bearing nonsymmetric bidentate pyrrole-imine chelate ligands (4a-d), [2-(ArNCH)C4H3N]Ni(PPh3)Ph [Ar=2,6-diisopropylphenyl (a), 2-methyl-6-isopropylphenyl (b), 2,6-diethylphenyl (c), 2-tert-butylphenyl (d)], have been prepared in good yields from the sodium salts of the corresponding ligands and trans-Ni(PPh3)(2)(Ph)Cl, and the structure of complex 4a has been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These neutral Ni(II) complexes were investigated as catalysts for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display very high activities and produce great mass polymers. Catalyst activity of up to 4.2 x 10(7) g (mol Ni h)(-1) and the viscosity-average molecular weight of polymer of up to 9.2 x 10(5) g mol(-1) were observed. Catalyst activity, polymer yield, and polymer molecular weight can be controlled over a wide range by the variation of reaction parameters such as Al-Ni ratio, norbornene-catalyst ratio, monomer concentration, polymerization reaction temperature and time.

The extraction of zinc(II) from an aqueous chloride medium has been studied using mixtures of sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-100) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272). The results demonstrate that zinc ion is extracted into heptane as ZnA(2).2HA with CA-100, ZnL2.2HL with Cyanex 272, and ZnA(2)L(2)H(2) with synergistic mixture. The equilibrium constants of the these species have been calculated and extraction mechanisms have been proposed. Thermodynamic parameters of the extraction process were determined by the temperature coefficient of extractability. The synergistic system enhances the extraction efficiency of zinc(II) and also improves the selectivity between zinc(II) and cadmium(II).

The extraction of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) from chloride solution by mixtures of primary amine N1923 and Cyanex272 (HA) was studied. The synergistic effect was observed for the extraction of zinc(II) while no synergistic effect for cadmium(II), which makes it possible to separate zine(II) and cadmium(II) with the mixtures. The results showed that zinc(II) was extracted as (RNH3Cl)(3) . ZnCIA instead of ZnA(2) . 2HA which was extracted by Cyanex272 alone. The extraction mechanism was discussed and the formation constants and thermodynamic functions were determined. The separation factors between zinc(II) and cadmium(II) were calculated.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

Extraction and separation of Eu3+ and Zn2+ in sulfuric acid solution was investigated by hollow fiber membrane with cyanex 302 (bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid) in counter-currently circulating operation. Reaction mechanism of membrane extraction and effect of extractant concentration and H+ concentration in aqueous phase on the mass transfer coefficient were discussed. It can be concluded that Zn2+ can be extracted completely from Eu3+ sulfate solution according to the kinetics competing difference. In one extractor process, extraction percentage of Zn2+ was not completely and Eu3+ was not extracted. Extraction percentage of Zn2+ reached 94.92%, but Eu3+ only reached 8.59% after 100 minutes extraction in two series connectors and that of Zn2+ and Eu3+ reached 99.9% and 6.53% respectively after 40 minutes extraction in three series connectors.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. The theoretical model[17] of an ultramicroelectrode modified with a redox species film is used as the diagnostic tool to characterize the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid at carbon fiber ultramicrodisk electrodes coated with an Eastman-AQ-Os(bpy)(3)(2+) film. The electrocatalytic behavior of ascorbic acid at the ultramicroelectrode modified by an Eastman-AQ polymer containing tris(2,2'-bipyridine) osmium(III/II) as mediators is described. In order to determine the five characteristic currents quantitatively, the radius of the ultramicroelectrode and the concentration of ascorbic acid are varied systematically. The kinetic zone diagram has been used to study the electrocatalytic system. This system with 0.5-2.75 mM ascorbic acid belongs to SR + E case, and the concentration profiles of the catalyst in the film are given in detail. Finally, optimizing the design of catalytic system is discussed.

Epoxidation of styrene was catalyzed by some nickel(II) complexes, with NaOCl as the oxygen donor. The catalyst Ni(PA)(2). 2H(2)O has been found to be stable for the epoxidation of styrene. Some additives were introduced in the reaction to improve the "micro-environment" of the catalyst. Radical trap had little influence on styrene epoxidation. It was interesting to find that phase-transfer agent had negative influence on epoxidation in this biphase reaction. A possible mechanism of styrene epoxidation catalyzed by Ni(PA)(2). 2H(2)O has been proposed.
