A series of vanadium-niobium oxide catalysts in which the vanadia content varies between 0.3 and 18mol%was prepared by coprecipitation. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy ion scattering (LEIS), and by catalytic testing in the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of propane. The results of the surface analysis by XPS and LEIS are compared. It is concluded that the active site on the catalyst surface contains 2.0 ± 0.3 vanadium atoms on average. This can be understood byassuming the existenceof two or three different sites:isolated vanadium atoms, pairs of vanadium atoms, or ensembles of three vanadium atoms. At higher vanadium concentration more vanadium clusters with a higher activity are at the surface.LEIS revealed that as the vanadium concentration in the catalyst increases, vanadium replaces niobium at the surface. At vanadium concentrations above 8 mol%, new phases such as P-(Nb, V)20S which are less active because vanadium is present in isolated sites are formed, while the vanadium surface concentration shows a slight decrease

Vanadium modified barium zirconium titanate ceramics Ba(Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90))O(3):2V (BZT:2V) were prepared from the mixed oxide method. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, addition of vanadium leads to ceramics free of secondary phases. Electrical characteristics reveal a dielectric permittivity at around 15,000 with low dielectric loss with a remnant polarization (P(r))of 8 mu C/cm(2) at 2 kV/cm. From the obtained results, we assume that vanadium substitution in the BZT lattice affects dielectric characteristics due to the electron-relaxation-mode in which carriers (polarons, protons, and so on) are coupled with existing dielectric modes. Vanadium/titanium mixed oxide films were produced using the sol-gel route. The structural investigation revealed that increased TiO2 molar ratio in the mixed oxide disturbs the V2O5 crystalline structure and makes it amorphous. This blocks the TiO2 phase transformation, so TiO2 stabilizes in the anatase phase. In addition the surface of the sample always presents larger amounts of TiO2 than expected, revealing a concentration gradient along the growth direction. For increased TiO2 molar ratios the roughness of the surface is reduced. Ion sensors were fabricated using the extended gate field effect transistor configuration. The obtained sensitivities varied in the range of 58 mV/pH down to 15 mV/pH according to the composition and morphology of the surface of the samples. Low TiO2 amounts presented better sensing properties that might be related to the cracked and inhomogeneous surfaces. Rising the TiO2 quantity in the films produces homogeneous surfaces but diminishes their sensitivities. Thus, the present paper reveals that the compositional and structural aspects change the surface morphology and electrical properties accounting for the final ion sensing properties of the V2O5/TiO2 films. Pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) reacts with the oxide of vanadium(V) and chlorides of chromium(III), iron (III) and Co(II) at room temperature forming the pyridinium salts of hexafluoro vanadate(V), hexafluorochromate(III), hexafluoroferrate(III) and hexafluorocobaltate(II) in near quantitative yields (80%). These pyridinium salts are the precursors for the preparation of the alkali metal hexafluorometallates by metathetic reactions in acetonitrile medium with the corresponding metal chlorides. The prepared salts have been identified by their infrared spectral data and elemental analysis.

Two new vanadium-tungsten oxide hydrates of the formulas, H0.125V0.125W0.875O3.1.5H2O (I) and Ho.33V0.33W0.67O3.1/3H2O (II), have been synthesized by acid-leaching of LiVWO6 with aqueous HNO3/HCl. While phase I obtained by treatment of LiVWO6 with dilute HNO3/HCl possesses an orthorhombic structure (a = 7.77(3), b = 13.87(6), c = 7.44(3) angstrom) related to WO3.2H2O, phase II, prepared by refluxing LiVWO6 with concentrated HNO3, is isostructural with WO3.1/3H2O. Dehydration of II around 330-degrees-C yields a hexagonal phase (III, a = 7.25(4), c = 7.74(3) angstrom) isotypic with hexagonal WO3. Both land III exhibit redox and acid-base intercalation reactivity characteristic of layered and tunnel structures.

Hollow nanotubes of SiO2, Al2O3, V2O5, and MoO3 have been prepared using carbon nanotubes as templates. The procedure involves coating the carbon nanotubes with tetraethylorthosilicate, aluminum isopropoxide, or vanadium pentoxide gel, followed by calcination and heating at higher temperatures in air to oxidize the carbon. SiO2 nanotubes containing transition metal ions have been prepared by this procedure since such materials may be of use in catalysis.

Several vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum oxide bronzes have been prepared using microwave irradiation. Metal oxides and alkali metal iodides were used as starting materials, Intermittent grinding and inert atmosphere were found to be necessary for the synthesis of most of the bronzes, The reaction temperatures are remarkably lower than those employed for conventional synthetic techniques and the microwave assisted reactions proceed at extremely fast rates. The microwave synthesized bronzes consist of particles having long, rectangular rod-like morphology. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

We describe the controlled fabrication of ultrathin multilayer films consisting of tri-vanadium- substituted heteropolytungstate anions (denoted as P2W15V3) and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) (denoted as QPVP-Os) on the 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface based on layer-by-layer assembly. Cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis absorption spectrometry have been used to easily monitor the thickness and uniformity of thus-formed multilayer films. The V-centered redox reaction of P2W15V3 in the multilayer films can effectively catalyze the reduction of BrO3- and NO2-. The resulting P2W15V3/QPVP-Os multilayer film modified electrode behaves as a much promising electrochemical sensor because of the low overpotential for the catalytic reduction of BrO3- and NO2-, and the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid.

A systematic study was made of the synthesis of V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O nanostructures, whose morphologies, crystal structure, and amount of water molecules between the layered structures were regulated by strictly controlling the hydrothermal treatment variables. The synthesis involved a direct hydrothermal reaction between V(2)O(5) and H(2)O(2), without the addition of organic surfactant or inorganic ions. The experimental results indicate that high purity nanostructures can be obtained using this simple and clean synthetic route. Oil the basis of a study of hydrothermal treatment variables such as reaction temperature and time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed that it was possible to obtain nanoribbons of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase and nanowires or nanorods of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) shows also that the water content in the Structure call be controlled at appropriate hydrothermal conditions. Concerning the oxidation state of the vanadium atoms of as-obtained samples, a mixed-valence state composed of V(4+) and V(5+) was observed ill the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase, while the valence of the vanadium atoms was preferentially 5+ in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) results also indicated that the local structure of vanadium possessed a higher degree of symmetry in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations point out that the participation of water can effectively lower the barrier height for the isomerization process between hydrated oxide cation, MO(H2O)(+), and dihydroxide cation, M(OH)(2)(+), (M = V, Nb and Ta). The catalytic effect is achieved by a water-assisted mechanism in which water acts as proton donor and acceptor, via a transition structure corresponding to a six-membered ring. In the case of vanadium atom, the presence of two water molecules has been taken into account and the tautomerization becomes nearly barrierless, decreasing both the stability of the transition structures relative to intermediates and the depths of wells associated with the intermediates. Strain and vacancy cluster behavior of vanadium and tungsten-doped Ba[Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90)]O(3) ceramics
Resumo:
Strain and vacancy clusters behavior of polycrystalline vanadium (V) and tungsten (W)-doped Ba[Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90)]O(3), (BZT:2%V) and (BZT:2%W) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method was evaluated. Substitution of V and W reduces the distortion of octahedral clusters, decreasing the Raman modes. Electron paramagnetic resonance data indicate that the addition of dopants leads to defects and symmetry changes in the BZT lattice. Remnant polarization and coercive field are affected by V and W substitution due the electron-relaxation mode. The unipolar strain E curves as a function of electric field reach its maximum value for BZT:2%V and BZT:2%W ceramics. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Dielectric spectroscopy was used in this study to examine polycrystalline vanadium and tungstendoped BaZr 0.1Ti 0.90O 3 (BZT10:2V and BZT10:2W) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method. According to X-ray diffraction analyses, addition of vanadium and tungsten lead to ceramics free of secondary phases. SEM analyses reveal that both dopants result in slower oxygen ion motion and consequently lower grain growth rate. Temperature dependence dielectric study showed normal ferroelectric to paraelectric transition well above the room temperature for the BZT10 and BZT10:2V ceramics. However, BZT10:2W ceramic showed a relaxor-like behavior near phase transition characterized by the empirical parameter γ. Piezoelectric force microscopy images reveals that the piezoelectric coefficient is strongly influenced by type of donor dopant suggesting promising applications for dynamic random access memories and data-storage media.
