This study investigates the effect of cash cropping on food availability and examines the determinants of the proportion of income allocated for food expenditures in the Nyeri district in Kenya. Using a Tobit model, the results suggest that in general food expenditure allocations suffer due to cash cropping in Kenya as the lump-sum income flows from this may be used for purchases other than food. Food expenditure also suffers when remittances are irregular. On the other hand, earnings from outside employment for married women living with husbands are positively associated with food expenditure allocations. Amounts of non-cash food output as well as ownership of livestock are negatively associated with food expenditure allocations. These findings indicate that lump sum income may not lead to improved welfare of women and children. Thus, there may be social reasons for increasing non-cash food production especially by women, instead of over emphasizing cash cropping as now seems to be so in public policy.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive performance, nutrients digestion and metabolism of three different genetic groups fed with the same diet based on corn silage. 30 heifers in growth were used of three groups of cattle, the following: Nellore (Bos taurus indicus) (n = 10), Holstein (Bos taurus taurus) (n = 10), and Mediterranean buffaloes (Bubalis bubalis) (n = 10). The animals were fed in groups and received the same experimental diet composed of corn silage and concentrate for growing heifers. In the evaluation of animals the performance, consumption and total apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients with the aid of internal markers (chromic oxide) and external (iADF), rumen fermentation, excretion of purine derivatives, nitrogen balance and blood metabolites were measured. No differences were observed in animal performance. There were differences in nutrient intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients in different groups of cattle. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the rumen were higher and lower, respectively, for the group of buffaloes in relation to other experimental groups evaluated. When considering the excretion of total purine derivatives, buffaloes showed the lowest value compared to other genetic groups evaluated; about 61.76% of the total genetic group Nellore and 57.62% of the total genetic group Holstein with an average of 33.67 mmol/day. For the buffaloes, the excretion of xanthine and hypoxanthine observed was of 5.11% of total purine derivatives. There was a better nitrogen balance (g/day) for groups of Holstein heifers and Nellore in relation to the group of buffalo heifers. There were differences in the concentrations of urea and urea nitrogen in serum and liver enzymes where the buffaloes had higher values in relation at the bovines. There is a great metabolic diversity among the experimental groups evaluated and it was more exacerbated among buffaloes and bovines, when submitted to the same diet and same management conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of infrared diode laser phototherapy (LP) on tissues of the submandibular gland (SMG) and parotid gland (PG). Wistar rats were randomly divided into experimental (A and B) and control (C) groups. A diode laser, 808 nm wavelength, in continuous wave mode, was applied to the PG, SMG and sublingual gland in the experimental groups on two consecutive days. The doses were 4 J/cm(2) and 8 J/cm(2), and total energy was 7 J and 14 J, respectively. The power output (500 mW) and power density (277 mW/cm(2)) were the same for both experimental groups. In order to visualize the area irradiated by the infrared laser, we used a red pilot beam (650 nm) with 3 mW maximum power for the experimental groups. For the control group, the red pilot beam was the only device used. The SMG and PG were removed after 1 week of the first irradiation. Total protein concentration, amylase, peroxidase, catalase and lactate dehydrogenase assays were performed, as well as histological analysis. Statistical tests revealed significant increase in the total protein concentration for groups A and B in the parotid glands (P < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, LP altered the total protein concentration in rats` parotid glands.

A/J and 129P3/J mouse strains have different susceptibilities to dental fluorosis, due to their genetic backgrounds. This study tested whether these differences are due to variations in water intake and/or F metabolism. A/J (susceptible to dental fluorosis) and 129P3/J mice (resistant) received drinking water containing 0, 10, or 50 ppm F. Weekly F intake, excretion and retention, and terminal plasma and femur F levels were determined. Dental fluorosis was evaluated clinically and by quantitative fluorescence (QF). Data were tested by two-way ANOVA. Although F intakes by the strains were similar, excretion by A/J mice was significantly higher due to greater urinary F excretion, which resulted in lower plasma and femur F levels. Compared with 129P3/J mice given 50 ppm F, significantly higher QF scores were recorded for A/J mice. In conclusion, these strains differ with respect to several features of F metabolism, and amelogenesis in the 129P3/J strain seems to be unaffected by high F exposure.

Empirical studies on the impact of women’s paid jobs on their empowerment and welfare in the Bangladesh context are rare. The few studies on the issue to date have all been confined to the garment workers only although studies indicate that women’s workforce participation in Bangladesh has increased across-the-board. Besides, none of these studies has made an attempt to control for the non-working women and/or applied any statistical technique to control for the effects of other pertinent determinants of women’s empowerment and welfare such as education, age, religion and place of living. This study overcomes these drawbacks and presents alternative assessments of the link between women’s workforce participation and empowerment on the basis of survey data from the two largest cities in Bangladesh. While the generic assessment indicates that women’s paid jobs have positive implications for women’s participation in decisions on fertility, children’s education and healthcare as well as their possession and control of resources, the econometric assessment negates most of these observations. Women’s education, on the other hand, appears to be more important than their participation in the labour force. The study underlines the fact that by omitting other relevant explanatory variables from the analysis, the previous studies might have overestimated the impact of women’s paid work on their empowerment. Among other things, the paper also highlights the importance of women’s job category, religion and regional differences for women’s empowerment.

Project: Serum samples may not be appropriate to assess lead (Pb) concentrations because they may contain artificially higher Pb concentrations compared with those measured in plasma samples. Here, we compared Pb concentrations in serum versus heparin plasma separated from blood collected with or without vacuum. We have also examined the effects of sample standing time on Pb concentrations measured in serum, heparin plasma, and EDTA plasma. Procedure: We studied plasma and serum samples from twelve healthy subjects. Blood samples were collected via venous drainage phlebotomy with and without vacuum into trace metal free tubes containing no anticoagulants (serum), or lithium heparin, or EDTA (to obtain plasma). Variable sample standing times (0, 5, and 30 min) prior to centrifugation were allowed. Plasma and serum Pb and iron concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Plasma and serum cell-free hemoglobin concentrations were measured. Results: Pb concentrations in serum and in heparin plasma from blood samples collected with or without vacuum were similar and not associated with significant changes in iron or hemoglobin concentrations. The sample standing time (up to 30 min) did not affect Pb concentrations in serum or in heparin plasma, which were approximately 50% lower than those found in EDTA plasma. Conclusions: Serum or heparin plasma separated from blood samples collected via venous phlebotomy with or without vacuum are appropriate medium to assess Pb concentrations, independently of the sample standing time. Police call data for domestic violence incidents in the city of Brisbane were used to further explore the locational disadvantage thesis. It was hypothesised that the supposed additional burdens and stresses on disadvantaged families living in the outer suburbs may be reflected in significantly higher rates of reported domestic violence. Using an index of relative socioeconomic disadvantage and employing Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), this research shows that significantly higher rates of reported domestic violence occur in the inner suburbs relative to the middle or outer suburbs of Brisbane. This finding adds further doubt as to the magnitude of locational disadvantage impacts on outer suburban low income family households.

Much of the individual variation in drug response is due to genetic drug metabolic polymorphisms. Clinically relevant examples include acetylator status; cytochrome P450 2D6, 2C9 and 2C19 polymorphisms; and thiopurine methyltransferase deficiency. It is important to be aware of which drugs are subject to pharmacogenetic variability. In the future, population-based pharmacogenetic testing will allow more individualized drug treatment and will avoid the current empiricism.

To support student learning in a large Metabolism and Nutrition class, we have introduced a web-based package, using a commercially available program, WebCT. The package was developed at a minimal cost and with limited resources. In addition to downloadable (PDF) versions of lecture Powerpoint presentations, tutorial outlines and a practical class exercise, web-based self-directed learning exercises were included to reinforce and extend lecture material in an active learning environment. The web-site also contained a variety of formative and summative assessment tasks that examined both factual recall and higher order thinking Detailed course information, timetables and a bulletin board were also readily accessible. Student usage of the site was generally high, but varied widely between individual students. Students who achieved a high overall score for the course completed on average three times as many formative assessment items and achieved a higher score for all tests than students who did poorly. Student feedback about the site was very positive with the majority of students reporting that the course material and assessment items that were available were useful to their learning. Pectenotoxins - an issue for public health - A review of their comparative toxicology and metabolism

Pectenotoxins (PTXs) are a group of toxins associated with diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) and isolated from DSP toxin-producing dinoflagellate algae. Consumption of shellfish contaminated with PTXs has been associated with incidences of severe diarrhetic illness resulting in hospitalisation. Concern has been raised for public health following the discovery that these toxins are not only hepatotoxic and can cause diarrhetic effects in mammals, but that they are potently cytotoxic to human cancer cell lines and have been found to be tumour promoters in animals. With advances in knowledge and technology, more PTXs are being identified, but little is known of their toxicology and the potential impact these toxins may have on public health in the long term. Without such information, adequate health-risk assessments for the consumption of shellfish contaminated with PTXs cannot be performed. This review gives a brief introduction to diarrhetic shellfish toxins, details the known toxicology and metabolism of PTXs in animals, and discusses known incidences of PTX poisoning in humans.
