Primeira parte das cartas familiares de D. Francisco Manuel escritas a varias pessoas sobre assuntos diversos /recolhidas, e publicadas em Cinco Centurias por Antonio Luis de Azevedo, professor de Humanidades e por elle offerecidas a Illustriss. Doutiss. e Sempre Insigne Academia dos Generosos (sic.)

Francisco Manuel de Melo nasceu em Lisboa, em 23 de novembro de 1608, e morreu na sua quinta em Alcântara, em 13 de outubro de 1966. Estudou no colégio jesuíta, especializando-se em Filosofia e Teologia. Aos dezessete anos, decidiu seguir carreira militar. Condenado por instigar homicídio, esteve preso por onze anos, e, em 1655, foi degredado para o Brasil, para onde partiu na armada de Francisco de Brito Freire. Retornou a Portugal em 1658. De lá foi para a Itália, onde permaneceu por alguns anos e começou, em 1664, a fazer uma edição completa de suas obras, às quais, por motivo ignorado, não deu continuidade. Transferiu-se para Lisboa, onde, logo depois, veio a falecer. Historiador, poeta, orador e crítico-moralista, Francisco Manuel foi um dos escritores mais eruditos e polidos.

O presente trabalho se propõe a analisar o discurso profético de Padre Antônio Vieira, por meio das obras Esperanças de Portugal. Quinto Império do Mundo e Livro Anteprimeiro da História do Futuro. A construção singular de tais textos será evidenciada a partir da articulação de três importantes conexões: conexão teológico-política; conexão mística e conexão histórica. Assim, a partir da abordagem de elementos biográficos e de uma reconstrução sócio-histórica, demonstraremos a lógica peculiar dessa escrita marcada pelo risco, pela fé e pelo delírio

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

Semblanzas Ictiológicas Iberoamericanas: Antonio José Machado-Allison

A través de esta nueva serie tratamos de conocer diferentes aspectos personales de los integrantes de la comunidad ictiológica iberoamericana. Esta iniciativa, comparte el espíritu y objetivo de las semblanzas nacionales buscando informalmente, otro punto de unión en la “comunidad de ictiólogos iberoamericanos”. Quizás esté equivocado en mi apreciación, pero creo que vale la pena este intento, ya que, con la colaboración generosa e insoslayable de los integrantes de este “universo”, señalaremos un registro en el tiempo de la Ictiología Neotropical.

Maturity, spawning and fecundity of Saurida tumbil (Bloch, 1795) from Mumbai waters

The absolute fecundity of Saurida tumbil ranged between 24160 to 172000 eggs with weight range of 230-670 g. Linear relationship between fecundity and weight was more valid than that of length and ovary weight. The fish breed once a year during November to March. The length at which 50% of the females mature was calculated as 296 mm. The female dominated the commercial catch and overall male to female ratio of population was 1:1.62 throughout the year.

Food and feeding habits of Saurida Tumbil (Block, 1795) off Mumbai waters

The present investigation suggests that Saurida tumbil (Bloch, 1795) is carnivorous and predacious feeding mainly on fishes followed by crustaceans and molluscs. Cannibalism has been observed in the species. Young ones of this species were observed to feed on small fish and Acetes spp., while adults feed on a variety of food. However, fish seems to be the preferred food item. Monthly gastro-somatic index in males indicates poor feeding in the month of february and maximum during august and september. In females, monthly gastro-somatic index indicate poor feeding in december and maximum during january and march. Sex wise study of feeding intensity did not reveal significant difference in males and females.
